I was willing to listen to yet another Venus Mars knock off. Not hard when you are working with stereo typical male female stuff which this guy definitely is. His descriptions do fit certain men, of a certain age, and some women for sure, but not all, no way. Then I went on to part two to find him mimicking women in a condescending and demeaning way which affirmed what I suspected. He’s uninformed and outdated.
Okay, I can see how one might see this that way…. I only watched the one I re-blogged, & didn’t go further, so I’ll take your word on that…. and when it comes to men/women relationships, nobody knows all the right answers. Hell, half the time, I can’t figure out the right questions… and one must remember, this guy was speaking at some sort of Catholic marriage seminar, and if anyone can use help, it is married Catholics… even if it’s outdated, it’s more up to date than any priest can give them…. and it WAS funny…. I’ve known a LOT of folks just like that…. even stereotypes have value, as educational tools….
I love laughing. My husband and I make fun of our differences and the misunderstandings that arise as a result almost daily. That said, I also think that humor can become a very clever way of disguising a really bad message. One that plays into and builds on the problem instead of a real solution. This video is a great example of that. In my opinion of course. The catch is that when everyone is laughing, and you get this feeling in your gut, your heart, that what you are listening to isn’t correct, or right, or even funny, you don’t trust it because everyone else is laughing. Then that leads to running to the doc for some happy pills so you will lighten up and laugh the way everyone else is. But, that is for another conversation. Layers. It’s complicated.
BTW, my own take on the subject is covered in my personal philosophy, which I have codified as Peruaosophy, the Wisdom Of Pearls… axiom #5 says,
