Good morning…. Thanks to the machinations of the machine, which we laughingly call modern society, I’m up, even though it’s not actually anywhere near morning. Technically, I suppose, I have to call it that, as we are an hour and a half into the new day. Somehow, I find it insulting to actually think of this hour as the hour to arise from bed, theoretically, and literally full of piss & vinegar, ready and eager to face the day…. Being force to get up due to twitching, and/or hurting, doesn’t quite fit the picture I had in mind when I thought of retirement….

SIGH…. Okay, enough obscure whining. I’m up, though I don’t really want to be; I’m dealing. I’m as awake as possible at this hour, I’m typing, I’m getting pissed off….. Slow down, there, big fella…. We’ve got lots of time; no need to get worked up right out of the gate…. Breathe, sip, breathe….

I’ll say this…. By the time I get to Ireland, and back, I’m gonna be as tough as an old boot…. maybe tougher. Enough on that….

In fact, since I have been recorded as having vowed I shan’t rant in the intro, (lovely phrase, what?…. It’s almost alliteration….”shan’t rant….”  Hah!….), I’ll use this opportunity to tell Luigi we can head right over to the oyster beds, without the usual side-trip for the purposes of distraction…. Ooh, I shouldn’t have said that, should I?….

Oh, well, so much for artistic license….

Shall we Pearl?….

Ffolkes who grew up during the same years as I did will remember this lady’s music very well; she was one of the most popular artists of her time. I will add my own opinion, to wit: her fame was well-deserved. I give you one of the legends of Rock and Roll, from the earliest days…. Miss Brenda Lee, the four-foot, ten-inch package of dynamite….

We the People...

Okay, so here’s the deal…. The last section is a rantish old-school pearl, and today’s poem is as fresh as it gets, meaning I’m experiencing a degree of temporary weakness due to blood loss. Therefore, to prevent the occurrence of untoward results, I won’t even attempt to create a fresh rant…. Instead, here is a pretty decent little politirant/indictment of our BRC, complete with an old-school pearl as an integral part of the piece…. Enjoy, such as you may, or wish….

From 8/14/2013:

Today’s format got somewhat disrupted, due to the first section’s departure from normal activity…. Well, as normal as it ever gets around here…. Any who, in this space, fashion would dictate I rant, and, I actually have the proper subject for same in hand. Actually, it’s a subject that isn’t going to go away, and will continue to remain in the forefront of the news for some time to come, as the solution is one the BRC is unwilling to permit.

I’m speaking of the current flap over the surveillance of the phone records and other data being compiled by the NSA and other clandestine spying agencies….. I would have said “intelligence agencies”, but, I’m not in the habit of using oxymorons, as a rule….

I COULD rant, as I have a lot of thoughts and feelings on the issue, but, yesterday, I read one of the most complete, perfectly written and researched articles on the subject that I’ve seen thus far. It is written by Jennifer Hoelzer, who was formerly the chief of staff for Oregon Congressman R. Wyden, the most outspoken critic in Congress of the spying by the administration. In responding to the President’s formation of an independent committee to examine the surveillance guidelines, in order to address “public concerns”, she outlines her part, and the parts played by all the participants, in a clear, effective manner, calling all the responsible parties to task for creating the issue in the first place.

It’s a great piece, and a must-read for anyone who wishes to have a thorough understanding of all the important major points, including an accurate timeline of the significant events….. I offer these two articles, one reporting on the President’s announcement, and the piece by Ms. Hoelzer herself. Please read them, and you’ll see what I am saying is truth….

As compensation, to me, for not ranting about this today, I offer these pearls, to speak to the issue in my own unique manner….

“Nationalism is an infantile sickness.  It is the measles of the human race.” — Albert Einstein

“A state which seeks to subordinate the citizen wholly to itself and merges the person into an impersonal mass, commits a collective murder.” — C. C. Martindale, _The Catholic Bedside Book_, 1953

“A Sept 13 1987 Boston Globe story indicated polls show almost half of Americans think the phrase ‘From each according to his ability, to each according to his need’ comes from the US Constitution.” — Chomsky’s Necessary Illusions

“Say what will convince, not what you believe.” — Bureaucrat’s Law #2

DIPLOMACY, n.  The patriotic art of lying for one’s country. — Ambrose Bierce, “The Devil’s Dictionary”

“Experience keeps a dear school, but fools will learn in no other, and scarcely in that; for it is true, we may give advice, but we cannot give conduct. Remember this: They that will not be counseled cannot be helped. If you do not hear reason she will rap you over the knuckles.” — Benjamin Franklin(1706-1790)– Maxims prefixed to Poor Richard’s Almanac, 1757

“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one.” — Rom 3:10

Yes, the last one was used recently in another pearl, but, I do that sometimes, when it is a perfect fit…. If all this doesn’t convince you of how serious the situation here on Earth is becoming, well, all I can say is, either you didn’t read it all, or you have more resistance to the truth than is good for you…. Any comments are welcome, even encouraged, and will be answered ASAP, back pain permitting….

This poem is the result of the last three of four days of no sleep…. Gee, do ya think it could be any darker?…. Go figure…. Try to enjoy it anyway, okay?…. Thanks; it bled a lot….

Mad Dogs at Bay

Wicked, angry red scenes of imminent demise
haunt my dreams each night.
Fearful visions of destructive surprise
leave me sweating in terror, as well they might.

Small, mean, ugly, with beady little eyes,
pundits gather like maggots, bloated and vile,
grunting, snuffling, mumbling outlandish lies,
enslaving the ignorant with patience and guile.

Society’s denizens exist as volunteer slaves.
Living and dying by script, completely blind.
Never allowing any resentment, no making waves.
Never knowing joy, nor any peace of mind.

Free men will not be controlled, ’tis said;
No coercion, no illusion can cloud their sight.
No threats, no pain, no fear they dread;
their only duty to keep to the right.

Dreams are mere reflections of our inner fears,
whispering, close against doors shut fast.
Mocking our mostly  irrelevant tears,
clearly marking the future as our sordid past.

Dont keep calm

No, the logo is correct; today’s final old-school pearl is a seven star series of comments about a subject of current interest to all of us, to wit: the ever-widening wealth gap in the world at large…. Here is what I found that seemed to make some sort of sense about it all…. It’s a bit abstruse in spots, but, it gives one a feeling for the reality of the issue…. Well, I think so, and that’s what counts around here, right?….

“Banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies.”

“The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their right names.” — Chinese Proverb

“It did not matter, after all. He was only one man. One man’s fate is not important. If it is not, what is? He could not endure those remembered words.” — Ursula K. Le Guin, spoken by Gaverel Rocannon, Rocannon’s World

“If you wish a life of trouble, fill your house with treasures.” — Chinese Proverb

“A monied aristocracy in our country … has already set the government at defiance.” — Thomas Jefferson

Oh. My. Golly. (Sorry…. My lawyer told me to stop using the word ‘God’….) It’s done. I’m, well, not flabbergasted, because. hey, who would be at 3:33 am on a Wednesday in July? No matter who one might, or, might not be, it’s too frigging early for flabber, or gasting, anyway, I don’t care what anybody says. Moreover, I think it’s probably illegal in this state. What state? The state of Confusion, naturally…. I’m afraid it must be time to go roast that chicken. See y’all tomorrow, ffolkes, provided I can find a small piece of my sanity somewhere; I had it right here when I went to bed….

À bientôt, mon cherí….

Did that demon just ovulate?….

Ffolkes,

For over two years now, every day, I’ve arisen early to write this blog, missing only a handful of days, due to either physical issues, or technical glitches of some kind. The routine I’ve developed in that time works for me, in that I’ve so far been able to keep up the creative process, such as it is, to a level that filled up my Pearls to the brim every day, and sometimes, overfilling it until it spilled out all over the carpet, or your shoes….. Messy, but, effective…. I’m not going to be presumptuously silly, and claim to have written the world’s greatest novel, or even the world’s greatest blog, but, it has fulfilled the purpose for which I intended it, which was to maintain a certain degree of sanity in the face of changes in my life that were overwhelming me, coming as they did as a surprise, which, in itself, is no surprise….

Now, two and a half years later, I find myself in the morning, ready to write, but with the purpose for which I write becoming diluted. Much of that which I fought to overcome, has been overcome; I’m no longer in danger of living the rest of my life in pain and poverty, as it looked like for a while I would. I’m no longer completely alone, having found a partner who is good for my head, and for my heart, and for whom I can be a rock in their universe, when needed. My physical condition, while slowly deteriorating, is under control, and merely serves to challenge me to find new ways to perform old tricks, something us old dogs are good at, despite anecdotal and cultural wisdom to the contrary…..

What this means is that my motivation to write is blunted. I am not building up angst as rapidly, nor am I as concerned over the shenanigans of our beloved leaders, as I’m almost to the point where their idiocy no longer affects me directly. As long as they don’t mess with my retirement structure, they’re safe from my overt hostility, so I’ve reached the point of “don’t fuck with me and I won’t fuck with you…” with them, and we’re both content with that, for the time being. Without the angst, ranting is difficult; there are plenty and more subjects to rant about, as is evident every day in the news, but, the outrage isn’t as strong as it has been in the past, and bringing myself to the level of anger and outrage necessary to do the job correctly is getting harder as time goes on….

I can still use old-school pearls, but, I’m sure that most folks find them a bit obscure, as they do make one think more than most folks are accustomed to doing. Of course, the thinking required is easily done, if one learns how to disengage belief, and follow thoughts without the drag of that chain on our imagination, but, that is a technique not commonly held, so the effectiveness of old-school pearls is reduced thereby. The poetry, of course, never gets old, to me, and I don’t care what others think about that; it stays, no matter what…..

I’m not sure where I’m going with this lament, or discussion, or clusterfuck, whichever it may be. It’s actually all just another exercise in writing without cause or purpose, meandering through the fields of English to put together words in such a way that the Pearls can begin, with dignity, or with fanfare, or with nothing at all but your kind attention. In other words, another intro section filled with NOTHING, other than some self-styled prose, some dubious assertions, and a shit-load of nonsense, otherwise known as just plain crap. The discussion itself is one that really HAS no ending point; it’s a pretty moot point, anyway, because I will write, come what may….

But, it got us this far, which makes it legal, if not compelling literature; I’m not sure if that is even possible, at this point. I’m not going to worry about it now, though, as it is getting late (it’s already after 0700), and I do have other stuff to do today. Instead, I’ll do what I do every morning, and just drop this where it is, mucking up the landscape, but, getting us down the road….

Shall we Pearl?…..

On Monday, 8/12/13, Elon Musk, the young genius behind Tesla Motors and the SpaceX commercial space flight company, revealed his response to the need for high speed transportation from city to city, such as SF to LA. He developed his idea when he saw the proposed cost of the current high speed rail system under production by the state of California, of over 60 billion dollars. He felt he could come up with a design for much less cost, that would serve the same purpose, and at much higher speeds…. Once again, he has presented the world with an idea that is cheap, practical, and would work like a charm, using standard technologies we already possess…. A full description of his idea can be found at the provided link, which is his complete proposal……

http://www.spacex.com/sites/spacex/files/hyperloop_alpha-20130812.pdf

Of course, the critics are already pooh-poohing the idea, but, not very loudly, as this young man made his first million at the age of 12, and everything he has turned his attention to has thrived, despite all disbelief. He has made the first practical, and fun, electric car, and made it affordable to the average person. He has developed the technology, and the business model, to successfully offer space flight to the public, though it is still very expensive. Now, he has turned his genius to a problem that society desperately needs to be solved, and has once again come up with something that is completely workable….

So, this is not a rant, nor is it an old-school pearl… if anything, it is just a news article, passing on some rather excellent news for society, even though I know his idea will be put through the wringer of the nay-sayers, who will try to deride it as new and unworthy…. But, I don’t think there will be much of it, and it won’t last, as this is quite simply, an idea whose time has come, and will eventually be adopted as reality by society at large….

Read the article, think about it, and, a few years from now, we’ll meet in LA for lunch, and be home before the game starts a 4:05 PM….

I’m late, and lazy today, so Emily wins…. Given the above article, it seems appropriate somehow….

A thought went up my mind to-day

A thought went up my mind to-day
That I have had before,
But did not finish,–some way back,
I could not fix the year,

Nor where it went, nor why it came
The second time to me,
Nor definitely what it was,
Have I the art to say.

But somewhere in my soul, I know
I’ve met the thing before;
It just reminded me–‘t was all–
And came my way no more.

That’s one cantankerous clown….

Ffolkes,

As I sit down today to begin, the expected blankness that fills my mind is broken only by the few pathetic words and letters piled in the corner, laying there in a jumbled pile, dusty, and unwanted. I swept them all up, put them in a bag, and am now utilizing the poor, sad, little things to write this, hoping that by doing so, inspiration will strike, without drawing blood, I trust. The auspices for a good day are enhanced thereby, though certainly not guaranteed to bring anything worthwhile…. While we’re sitting here, waiting to see what will happen, would anyone else like some coffee? No? I make it strong, so it’s pretty good, I think; it will certainly wake you up, even if you’re mostly dead….

When I was a breakfast cook, many years ago, I would always make a pot of coffee for myself, before any of the waitrons came in, and before any patrons were served. I made it to suit myself, and, normally, the waitrons would either finish it themselves, or toss it out before opening, as it was (literally) twice as strong as their normal brew, and not acceptable for serving to the customers of the resort…. One morning, they forgot to toss it, and it got served to about 6 or 8 senior citizens who came in right before their tour bus left to go home to Fresno…. Two days later, the driver of their bus, on a return trip, asked the waitrons what had happened, because, on the trip to Fresno, these 8 seniors were the life of the party, laughing, singing, and traipsing back and forth to the toilet for most of the three hour bus ride….. It was the most life he’d seen in one of those groups in his twenty years of driving for them…..

Okay, well, I suppose an anecdote from the past is an acceptable way to open up this kind of blog, especially on a Sunday….. Not that Sundays are much different than any other day in my life, but, the rest of the world pays a lot of attention to that kind of thing, so I must at least acknowledge it. Not doing so probably wouldn’t cause a lot of problems, like losing money or anything, but, it has been known to cause angst, in others, when I forget to pay homage to the (delusional) connotations of this day of the week, in a congregational sense…. A lot of Americans ignore the imperative to be in church today, or to, at least, confine one’s activities to church-approved events or tasks, like gardening, or working around the house….. A whole bunch of them engage in sporting activities, generally while seated in a chair with their beer of choice, observing others play the sport on the babble-box…..

Me, I’m retired, don’t suffer from delusions, and I don’t have a TV, so none of that affects me, other than to remember that everyone else is paying their homage to their programmed tapes, the set of instructions instilled in them from the time they were small, and defenseless…. It makes me sad for them, but, at this stage of history there is very little I can do, other than encourage them to try new things, to think new thoughts, and throw off the dark, stifling, delusional beliefs that have held them in thrall for their entire existence…. and that’s mostly as effective as pissing into the wind & expecting to keep your pants dry….

Hmph…. sorry, didn’t mean to go all graphic, but, you get the idea…. Any who, look! We’ve gotten five paragraphs in to this error of judgment, which is legally an intro, so, I’m going to take advantage of that little loophole in the law, and get on with the rest of today’s nonsense, or sense, depending on what I find to chew on, and spit back out…. Maybe I’ll go look for a headline to discuss…. yeah, that’s the ticket… Okay, that’s enough of this….

Shall we Pearl?….
_____________________________

You know, normally, when looking through the headlines in the morning, I suppose, like everyone, I tend to skip over stuff that doesn’t seem to catch my attention. Today, I examined those teasing first lines for stuff to demonstrate a point, to wit: society is plain crazy, and the end is near…. Well, maybe not today, but, it’s getting closer all the time…. Any who, when I did so today, I found that things are, perhaps, both worse, and a little better, than I had thought…. In lieu of a pearl, here, then, are some of today’s actual headlines for news from around the US, the Bay Area, and the world at large….. I don’t think I need to point out just how crazy it all is, but, this stuff is pretty crazy…. for a purportedly normal Sunday…..

BART strike bad for all sides.

1 dead,11 hurt in rammings.

210 arrested at Chevron refinery protest.

Man shoots duo that abducted him, his wife.

KGO-TV news team robbed in Oakland.

SF protesters condemn Russia’s anti-gay laws.

OpenTable gobbles up Urbanspoon’s RezBook.

Twitter tries to curb abuse of female users.

Column title: Who is the Knucklehead of the week.

All of these were pulled fresh from the news on 8/4/2013, and were all found on the SFGATE web site, an outlet connected to the SF Chronicle. Do I need to point out the implications of each? Or, should I point out the points that connect all of them, and, together, point out the path we have taken toward the future? No, I didn’t think so…. It’s pretty obviously crazy, all of it….

Since I didn’t rant, I’m too lazy to go find a poem, and I don’t have one ready to write, y’all will just have to deal with one of mine from the archives…. I did try to pick one that fits in with today’s themes, sort of…. Enjoy!

Geezer to Congress, with Love

Politicos don’t care much ’bout seniors and their ilk,
except for their money, I thinks;
Though they talk as if they’d cozen them in silk,
what they actually do, it stinks.

“The banks are failing, we can’t allow that!”,
steal from the aged, that’s their plan.
“Their life’s ending, that’s plainly where they’re at,”
lie shamelessly, because they can.

Maybe just once, if we all act together,
it couldn’t miss.
Right on their shoes, no matter the weather,
we take careful aim, and piss.

Why the hell not?
It’s worth a shot!

There I was, cruising through Smart Bee, looking for one type of pearl, so, of course, SB has to start throwing all sorts of useful stuff at me, without coming close to what I was looking for…. Naturally, I went with the flow, because otherwise it just gets worse. I stuck the random quotes in other, future pearl sections, to be used at a later date, and collected the ones that came up that seemed to hang together. Once more, serendipity has stepped in, and delivered a strong seven-star pearl, aimed directly at a common subject of ours here at ECR, to wit: government, and those sociopaths who engage in it….

“Success and failure are equally disastrous.” — Tennessee Williams

“You can always get the truth from an American statesman after he has turned  seventy, or given up all hope of the presidency.” — Wendell Phillips

“Appearances often are deceiving.” — Aesop (620-560 B.C.)

“The intelligence of any discussion diminishes with the square of the number of participants.” — Adam Walinsky

“The love of liberty is the love of others; the love of power is the love of ourselves.” — William Hazlitt

What Congress means by ethics is best explained by the tailor’s story: “Suppose I sell a suit to a young man for $200.  He tells me that his family is footing the bill and that if I give him a receipt for $400 to give to his parents, he will pay me $100 on the side. The question of ethics is: Do I keep the extra $100 myself, or do I tell my partner and split it with him?” — Smart Bee

Alright, you don’t have to shout; I’m right here….. I know, the last line is a bit egotistical, isn’t it? I can’t say I’ve ever had a problem with mine, but, if you say so, well, I’ll accept that. I won’t do anything about it, but, I accept it….. That being said, let’s see how all this came out….. All things considered, not bad at all…. If nothing else, it is NOT normal, so, it will do…. and, since I can’t think of any further damage I can do without getting fully dressed, I’ll bid thee adieu….  Y’all take care out there, and May the Metaphorse be with you….
