profuse life

Life, breaking free….

I always find it interesting to note how our society/culture observes the various events of community, i.e. holidays, festivals, & celebration of important dates. The passing of the old year, & celebration of the New Year (why is one capitalized & the other not?…. I don’t know, but, that’s how I’ve always seen it done….) is one of those holidays, one whose origins are lost in ancient times, subject only to speculation as to why the event came to be an important day. Much of what I’ve noticed is how the various religions prevalent in each part of the world determines what is important, as well as what version of time, and calendar, is used to mark those days to be celebrated. Since I subscribe to none of them, it’s all a fascinating example for me of how little humans really understand themselves, and their own motivation for much of what they find themselves doing….

Fascinating to me, yet also frustrating, for it is our human lack of understanding which leads us into most of the trouble we encounter in society; we believe we know what is real, but, lacking mindfulness of the moment in which we exist tends to cause many of the issues that arise to torment each other, and create problems for all of society…. In modern slang terms, we think we’re all that, but, we ain’t. We’re mostly a large number of silly monkeys, pretending to be cultivated, but, still reacting to the real world as if we still lived in caves, or in trees….

Now, some folks, & even some ffolkes, may call me negative, or curmudgeonly for such an analysis, but, I just calls ’em as I sees ’em. Since most of the society in which I find myself believes in greeting the New Year with positivity, I will forgo any further curmudgeonry in favor of merely getting posted with the little bit of entertaining fluff I’ve cobbled together for your edification/elucidation. I shall also approach that with a higher degree of efficiency than thus far exhibited, by the simplest method, to wit:

Shall we Pearl?

For today’s musical interlude, I’ve chosen a set of six concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach, for several reasons, which are, most simply put, not particularly relevant. Suffice to say these are some of my favorites, since first hearing them years ago. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do…. Abondanza!….

Measures of Intent

Hell is never far away; it slips in, then out,
like a ninja, bent on stealth and death.
Living metamorphoses, in the space of a breath,
sordid entropy fills us, within, and without.

Tide turns again; back and forth it tumbles,
like those little wind up toys, yet never stays.
All our efforts, all our silly little ways,
disappear like seaweed, as sanity crumbles.

The duality of reality in which we are firmly caught,
seems to inhabit every part of our natural selves.
Nothing is ever still, nor can it be placed on shelves;
we are dark, and light; balance must be taught.

Life is lived only one moment at a time,
past and future have no power to alter this at all.
We can choose to fly, or choose to fall;
finding truth, and beauty, can never be a crime.

Dunphy’s Tavern…

One day, perhaps, I’ll find & resume the routine which allows me to produce these posts on a consistent basis; my deliberate absence, and the resultant lack of practice, along with the lifestyle alterations I’ve made, don’t seem to lend themselves particularly well to the single-minded focus I once displayed in that respect. All I can say about that is, oh, well; too bad, so sad. For the current time & place, that will have to suffice, for I feel no guilt, nor any particular shame. All I feel is a vague, unfocused feeling, much like thinking we’ve forgotten something important.

But, like any human of my age, I have numerous techniques to put all that sort of crap aside, & just go on as if it didn’t matter. Which, if you note, it doesn’t, at all. Not only doesn’t it matter, it’s probably only me who either cares, or even thinks about stuff like that. I mean, what’s the point? Well, I’ll tell ya…. When your mind is as empty of ideas on how to get going, or keep going, you (or, rather I….) will put damn near anything down, just to get a little further down the page….

SIGH…. However, even such shameless blather as I’ve employed thus far can only take us so far, & never quite far enough. In fact, it;s so pitifully bad, I’m giving up. If you listen closely, you can hear me muttering to myself as I do the only thing I have left to do….

Focused meditation….

Hajime…. Since retiring from work, I have discovered the part of living in contact with much of the world I miss the least, & that is, quite simply, drama. The emotional turmoil in which much of the world seems to spend the majority of its time seems to me a complete waste of what little time we have here in this plane of existence, and I cannot understand why most people keep on walking on a path strewn with pain, and suffering caused by emotions, which are, after all, transient, by their nature. Because we are invested so heavily in EGO, we seem to find our own inner world, with its chaotic feelings, to be the way of the world, and our disappointment is intense when it proves not to be so.

All that, by the way, is the result of drama intruding upon my life, caused, as is generally the case, by others who are merely peripherally connected to me, by their connection to those I love. Without going into detail, I have to say, it’s more intense than I enjoy, and has no purpose beyond the fear felt by a narcissist, who then, according to their neurotic nature, pass their own fear and anger to everyone around them. These others are those to whom I am connected, so, some of the emotional chaos ends up at my door. Thankfully, I don’t have to engage in it, nor do I; it’s just hard to see those I love having no choice but to deal with it in all its intense, ‘in the moment’ importance, thus making their own journey through life more uncomfortable….

All has receded enough for me to finish this post, though not with the light-hearted humor with which I intended to start off. So, I’ll forgo trying to inject anything of that nature, as it would, no doubt, fall flatter on its face than a flounder, which is pretty flat. Instead, I’ll just mention how well I’ve coped with it, all in all, and get on with the process of posting. I didn’t manage to leak out the new poem yet; it’s blocked, somehow, by the presence of drama, at least until it’s all assimilated and processed into metaphor. But, I’ve included some most excellent music, a damn good older poem, and, a set of old-school pearls with which I am quite pleased. Good shit, as they say….

So, let’s go see what there is to see, eh? It can’t be any less thrilling than this has been, right? Right. We’re off now, so, hang on….

So it says on the news.
Guess there’s nothing to do again

The blues are gettin’ old, though.
So I say, & I should know.
I been singin’ the bloody songs, y’know?
For what seems a long row to hoe.

S’pose it could get better someday.
I’ve heard that tune before.
Always seemed out of tune anyway;
I ain’t waitin’ any more.

Bang those drums & kick the cans.
May as well raise some hell.
Clang together some old pots & pans;
It hides the little voices so well.

Never worry, don’t you fear at all.

Sonoma Valley, post-harvest in the west valley…

Hajime…. and good morning. Today is one of the few days to which I pay any particular attention, as it is the anniversary of my advent upon this planet. Yep, I’m 67 years old today, & happy to be so. Sadly, one  of the disadvantages of achieving such a relatively advanced age has assumed prominence in my attention, with a physical issue that is annoying, as it precludes getting any writing done. Suffice it to say, I cannot sit for very long right now, without HAVING to change position to either upright, or supine. In short, sitting is NOT my friend right now, & I have yet to find a comfortable or efficient way to use my computer while standing, or lying down…. SIGH….

I said I’d post today, though, so, post I will. The only difference is, this short bit is all the time I have; I can’t continue, so, I’m going to post as quickly as possible, & go about dealing with the physical issue as best I may. You may ask, how will I do that? Trust me on this; you don’t want to know. In fact, just hang on, because we’re goin’ in hot again….

Hajime…. Without going into superfluous detail, I’ll say this: Balderdash! Having thus made the obligatory attempt to regain self-control, I’ll go on to say, there almost wasn’t/isn’t a fresh Pearl for today. The various elements are, if not in place, ready to be; I’ll go ahead and post today, & let it fly with the hope nobody notices the lack of coherence. Perhaps coherence isn’t the exact word for the sentiment I wish to convey, but, it will have to do, as it does supply the correct ambiance to describe the morning’s progression of nasty surprises followed by outbursts of frustrated angst. I’d blame it on Murphy, but, that would be self-indulgent, as Murphy is, in the final analysis, only an expression of our own tendency to try to find something other than karma to blame for how we feel….

And, I will add…. THAT is just about all the philosophy I’ve got today. It saved me from a full day of blowing off the world, so, I’ll take it, but, I won’t try to go any further with it, lest I fall back into the pit yawning in front of me. I only managed to keep from falling in by the grace of a moment’s reflection, so, I’m going to finish posting this, then get back to the reflection part; it’s the only bright note so far today, & I’d better hang on to it. Odd to act so mature, but, what the hell…. I AM 22 for the third time; some might say a bit of maturity wouldn’t be out of place. Go figure, eh? Ah, well, such is life in the big city….

Before the irony registers, let’s get on with it, shall we? I’m just faking this anyway, so, there is little point in continuing to waste electrons on nonsense like this. Rather than even think about any of what this all means, I’m using executive privilege to take us away, to what I hope will be a better place, if only because I’m not blathering at you…. “It is not necessary to light a candle to the sun.”

~~ Algernon Sidney — Discourses on Government, Chap. ii, Sect. xxiii ~~

Though I managed to finish this Pearl yesterday, between my walking & playing in the BBR, and listening to music, I find myself somewhat lacking in ideas this morning to introduce it. Originally, I’d intended to write a short, pithy discourse using the above quote as a springboard. That fell by the wayside when I gazed at it this morning, & found I had nothing I wish to relate, either on the idea of government, or lighting candles, even metaphoric ones. So, with that elegant opportunity wasted, I move now to a more efficient, if less elegant technique, so I can get it posted in a relatively timely fashion.

Even this is sounding rather stilted, formal, & not at all what I had in mind when I began. Rather than try to make it into something it is not, I’ll just use my experience at blog manipulation to move us down the page, to where the material is distracting enough to make us all forget we ever had anything else in mind. To do that is a fairly simple task, for we can utilize old #4, which has earned its place as our default escape tool over time. It’s actually pretty cool, as long as you hang on to something….

I only recently discovered this artist’s music, though, apparently, I’ve been listening to it for years, on the air waves. Perhaps it is me, but, I often hear music while I’m out and about, or riding in someone’s car, music I enjoy listening to, but have no clue as to the artist’s name. After a number of years of hearing a certain voice, I’ll ask, or discover the artist’s name; I then have a chance to explore their work to see if they’re someone I’ll listen to more, or even procure it for my personal use via purchase or download. This man’s work has been on that edge of my awareness for a long time now, & I am very pleased to have discovered him, and, with him, an entire genre of modern music of which I’d been unfamiliar. I hope you enjoy him as much as I find I do….Abondanza!….

Blue chameleon

It’s hot today, with chances of pain & rain.
So it says on the news.
Guess there’s nothing to do again
unless it’s sing the blues.

The blues are gettin’ old, though.
So I say, & I should know.
I been singin’ the bloody songs, y’know?
For what seems a long row to hoe.

S’pose it could get better someday.
I’ve heard that tune before.
Always seemed out of tune anyway;
I ain’t waitin’ any more.

Bang those drums & kick the cans.
May as well raise some hell.
Clang together some old pots & pans;
It hides the little voices so well.

Never worry, don’t you fear at all.
We’ve got certificates of note.
Bureaucratic protections, officially small.
Non carborundum illegitimi, he wrote.

Time, and circumstance, wrote me today.
It came in the daily mail from home.
It said I shouldn’t write unless I say
you’ll be charged for the distance you roam.

Sleeping Gaia…. Can you see her?….

Hajime…. Words flow, at times, like a melodic brook falling softly down a forest glen; still other times, they fade away, disappearing into the grey fogs swirling always at the edges of the mind. No matter which side of the universal coin they present, seemingly at the whim of fate, the need to use them, as the means of stilling the cacophony which builds up, in reaction to perception of our confusing, complex, beautiful world, remains an undeniable impulse. Better yet is to find the place inside where the words merge and meld into music, often as if meant for no other purpose; such moments are true epiphany, for me, for any truly human being….

I have to write; it’s no longer an option to keep from doing so, if only when I can physically tolerate the numerous repetitive actions, while seated, required to perform the very act,  all of which puts stress on our bodies, so accustomed to activity. In the recent past, I’ve come to understand my time of introspection needs to turn toward action, in the sense I must now, as Joe Campbell would put it, ‘follow my bliss’…. So, I intend to try to meld my need to write with my love of music, & start practicing on my guitar, & trying to fit some of my poetry into the music I find in me…. I can’t say any of it will ever reach the stage of showing it to the world, but, the attempt itself will be a learning experience, so, we’ll see what I learn.

For the moment, which comes two days after composing the above paragraphs, we’ll jump right in to the effort I’ve made over the last few days of recovery, since last posting a fresh mess. It wouldn’t help to detail this particular morning’s events, as I am neither happy about them, nor content with my own state of being; I’ve been up since 0230, thanks to some negative behavior seeking by the resident fur-bearing extortionist, after a long day with 3 naps yesterday, trying to recover a bit of energy. Suffice it to say, the rest of the day has to go better, for it couldn’t have been much worse so far….

In fact, only concentrating on finishing this episode of my personal quest to find, or create, some rationality in an insane world has kept me from felinicide, or taxicide (fyi, the killing of cats & cabbies who never show up….), so, I’m going to get it posted, hopefully before I get arrested. I’ll even give up trying to explain anything, & get on with it, post haste…. That, of course, looks like this….

Today’s musical selection is a find of most excellent flavor. The video you’ll see below is called the ‘best version’ of the song played by the iconic band from the 60’s & 70’s… I have to agree with the title’s assumption, having seen or heard it many times, both live & on the radio of the day. Incredible performances by the entire band mark this as a truly iconic representation of the spirit that burgeoned during that era; the energy is incredible. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have, & use the links in the player to listen to some of their more recent work, as they are still playing & living their music….

Life as we know it….

As we grow and learn to be, in this sad, yet joyous parade,
we only have our Self with which to face life;
small, we are, and weak,
but, smart.

Reality, in studied contrast, is an invisible, ubiquitous shade
dispassionate ambivalence brings us mostly strife.
It’s never enough to seek.
Take part.

The universe won’t make a compromise, but will make a trade.
Give away your fear for knowledge, and a reasoned life.
It often requires a tweak;
live Art.

Love is an essential part of our own particular charade
without it, life can be filled with strife.
Souls perch high on a peak;
sweet, tart.

Pain  always balances with joy, the price has to be paid;
for us humans, each must be equal in life.
To know one, the other must speak.
Never apart.

We are all actors, playing parts we’ve chosen to have portrayed;
the director’s absence produces endless strife.
Trying to make sense brings only pique.
Go. Start.

Hajime…. Today’s Pearl is getting posted rather late, according to my self-imposed deadline. Due partially to the half-hour of cat hammock time for which I was enlisted, just as I sat to compose the intro, as well as to the ongoing evolution of my personal diurnal habits (I awoke later than is commonly the case), I can offer no excuses, only explanations. Such is the life of a self-denigrating curmudgeon, when engaging in the purging of privately held insanity; I just figure, hey, it could be worse. In fact, it could be a LOT worse…. Trust me on this; it has done so in the past, and, shall do so again, I’m sure…

But, we’ll avoid falling into the self-indulgent, yet, somehow charming, habits in which we generally engage, by simply ignoring any possible implications to be found, & getting on with what may yet turn into something worthwhile. Not that we’ll hold out any hope for such; I can figure odds as well as the next guy, & those odds are NOT in our favor should we choose to fall into the trap of denial. Instead, I’ll nod my head sagely, mutter what sounds like some sort of incantation, & further distract you with a loud noise from off-stage…. Don’t let it throw ya; it’s only a recording, not a real explosion….

Can you tell I’m struggling here? No? Well, I am. Moreover, I’m tired of it, and have decided to quit trying to turn this into anything worthwhile, & just get on with the rest of today’s show, such as it is. All the elements are in place. so, I guess it’s time to go see they get into the proper alignment. Perhaps I can save this in the closing section; hard to tell, but, I think my chances may improve further down the page. Worth a shot, eh? Let’s see if this button will work….

Sharing the Wealth

Lucky are we who live with some adversity,
Such strife to bear leaves us strong and free.
Time is no better spent at a fine university
Teaching us the kind of person we wish to be.

We humans are such contrary creatures
Life lived in ease is our fondest intent.
New perceptions are our strongest features
Learning to cope with troubles we cannot prevent.

Lessons we learn at Trouble’s bent knee
Stay on top in the bag of tools we carry.
Knowledge so earned can keep us free
On our long, strange trip to Charon’s ferry.

Pain is the least favorite of our teachers
Yet such powerful lessons stay forever and a day.
No matter how life presents its features
Strength of will equals what life sends our way.

T’is well to consider such time-tested tools,
To carry them with us as we travel through Life.
Events are less likely to show us as fools,
as we deal with Reality, where peril is rife.

Hajime…. As the old man sat, pondering how to begin, his resident familiar appeared, claiming his lap for a hammock. After ten minutes of mutually satisfying contentment, complete with purrs & hedonistic delight, she jumped down with a chirp of thanks, to nom some food. Deciding to forgo the planned fictional opening, the words of opening began to flow….

Truly, a fictional beginning might have been more attractive, in at least an artistic sense; thank goodness our purposes here have little or nothing in common with attractiveness. Otherwise, we might have spent the past few moments trying to find our way out of one my particularly obscure fantasies, with no clear reason why we were there in the first place. Fortunately for us all, I managed to avoid any such entrapment, by the simple expedient of heading off into edited reality. I suppose it isn’t the most efficacious literary outcome we might hope to experience this time of day, but, it is two paragraphs of fairly coherent conversation, for all that is worth….

Yes, I’m stuck again. Half way through an introductory section, with, still, no clear idea of how we got to where we are, nor any better idea of how to get out of it. In the interests of fair play, as well as common sense, I’ll just use one of our unexpectedly effective techniques to close it off, & not worry overmuch about how it looks, or pretends to look. Instead, we’ll just do this….

Shall we Pearl?

Fighting into the light, words push hard to exist
each step closer to real brings another unique twist.
Shedding meaning for meaning, until bright, alone, and right
sculpting useless shapes, yet undefined, in pale morning’s light.

Never knowing the face is part of the lasting charm
bringing elegant focus, before sounding the alarm.
Advantageous time sends out messages, fears finding voice,
mulling options for flexibility, virtually without choice.

Fortunate man, who embraces the power of change;

Weaving words of wonder, made strong by love and duty,
into a tapestry of life, and everlasting beauty.

Hajime…. Once again, I find myself with the elements of today’s Pearl ready, but for the opening, and closing sections. As is generally the case, inspiration deserts me just when needed, so, here I sit, vainly typing away, hoping some sort of opportunity to find a direction will present itself. Often, I can find such chances before ending the opening paragraph, but, it’s looking pretty grim right now for the home team. Ah, well, so be it. It will just have to be one of ‘those’ days; I’m not in the mood to fight with that particular demon this morning, so, we’re going to utilize our recently acquired ruthlessness to save the bacon, which I can no longer chew, but, use for soups….

Soup. Now, there’s an opportunity, one which, sadly, presents itself too late for our purpose. In fact, I am preparing to exercise executive authority; otherwise, we’re stuck with broth instead of soup. Tuesday’s Child, from an Oblique Angle

When I really stop to think, it isn’t too much to expect
a warm bed, a bite of food, a loving smile to reflect.
We all need such comfort and supportive attention,
so basic to our soul, there is no real need to mention.

Life often offers us opportunities disguised very well,
illusions are rampant, what is real can be hard to tell.
To honor old ties may seem like the only thing one can do,
but evidence is real, despite one’s wish it were untrue.

Those who love us truly, without thought of any gain,
hate for us to experience life’s portions of pain.
They also know we each must follow our own chosen way,
for the lessons we learn, we all have our own price to pay.

Still, wishing and hoping can’t do any true harm
and wishing good things to friends feels welcome, and warm.
The pageant of society will pass on to the next day
what new sights and sounds it will bring me, I thankfully can’t say.
