“It is not necessary to light a candle to the sun.”

~~ Algernon Sidney — Discourses on Government, Chap. ii, Sect. xxiii ~~

Though I managed to finish this Pearl yesterday, between my walking & playing in the BBR, and listening to music, I find myself somewhat lacking in ideas this morning to introduce it. Originally, I’d intended to write a short, pithy discourse using the above quote as a springboard. That fell by the wayside when I gazed at it this morning, & found I had nothing I wish to relate, either on the idea of government, or lighting candles, even metaphoric ones. So, with that elegant opportunity wasted, I move now to a more efficient, if less elegant technique, so I can get it posted in a relatively timely fashion.

Even this is sounding rather stilted, formal, & not at all what I had in mind when I began. Rather than try to make it into something it is not, I’ll just use my experience at blog manipulation to move us down the page, to where the material is distracting enough to make us all forget we ever had anything else in mind. To do that is a fairly simple task, for we can utilize old #4, which has earned its place as our default escape tool over time. It’s actually pretty cool, as long as you hang on to something….

I only recently discovered this artist’s music, though, apparently, I’ve been listening to it for years, on the air waves. Perhaps it is me, but, I often hear music while I’m out and about, or riding in someone’s car, music I enjoy listening to, but have no clue as to the artist’s name. After a number of years of hearing a certain voice, I’ll ask, or discover the artist’s name; I then have a chance to explore their work to see if they’re someone I’ll listen to more, or even procure it for my personal use via purchase or download. This man’s work has been on that edge of my awareness for a long time now, & I am very pleased to have discovered him, and, with him, an entire genre of modern music of which I’d been unfamiliar. I hope you enjoy him as much as I find I do….Abondanza!….

Blue chameleon

It’s hot today, with chances of pain & rain.
So it says on the news.
Guess there’s nothing to do again
unless it’s sing the blues.

The blues are gettin’ old, though.
So I say, & I should know.
I been singin’ the bloody songs, y’know?
For what seems a long row to hoe.

S’pose it could get better someday.
I’ve heard that tune before.
Always seemed out of tune anyway;
I ain’t waitin’ any more.

Bang those drums & kick the cans.
May as well raise some hell.
Clang together some old pots & pans;
It hides the little voices so well.

Never worry, don’t you fear at all.
We’ve got certificates of note.
Bureaucratic protections, officially small.

Time, and circumstance, wrote me today.
It came in the daily mail from home.
It said I shouldn’t write unless I say
you’ll be charged for the distance you roam.

Solitary splendor….

Hajime….

“I love mankind; it’s people I can’t stand.”

~~ Charles Schulz, aka Charlie Brown ~~

It’s unusual around here (if anything I say or do can be said to be anything but….) to begin the introduction with a second pearl. Today, (or, yesterday, if you prefer, as I’m writing this then… Time Lord business, pay no mind….), besides going completely overboard with the parenthetical remarks, I’ll be coming as close to ranting as I have in some time… I suppose I should find another descriptive word to indicate the sort of discussion in which I plan to engage, sotto voce, as it were; ’tisn’t really a rant. Perhaps a word I already utilize each day will give the proper ‘look & feel’ character; that word is ‘Exploring’, as used in the official blog title, at the top of the page.

Yes, that will do quite well, I should say; I’m going exploring, in my mind and heart, for the words to express what I find there, and how Life at Large, which we can also call consensual reality, has affected me in the recent past, which, as I type, I realize means, also, the distant past. What we know is always aware of what we have been through before, if only for its lingering effects on our attitudes & habits. Modern pop psychology would call those our ‘tapes’, that which we received before we were even self-aware, picked up in our relatively long immediately-post-natal learning period. Part of why I explore is to identify these ‘tapes’, to examine them for current relevance, or, mark them for deletion.

So, ready or not, here we go. We’ll begin with some thoughts on a subject I find to be part of the core of what I wish to explore, from a man I respect highly, dead or not. George was a thinker; more, he was a man who loved humanity, which allowed him to see all their foibles & idiosyncracies with a ruthlessly honest eye, and the genius to make them listen & laugh with him at their own bozoid natures….

georges manifesto

Without ever using the word, George identifies the single most critical element, to my mind; that word is ‘fear’. He alludes to how it is exploited as cruelty, and, it is, for it spreads the fear it fans to others, sans any purpose but self-interest. Humans, though one plays hell getting them to admit it, are not all that different than our ancient cousins, who lived huddled in temporary safe havens, such as caves, or convenient groves of trees, afraid of everything in their environment they did not understand, other to know its danger…. To believe what religion claims to be true brings comfort to those who cannot learn to face, & control their fears, promising to them what they already possess.

Learning to control fear is, then, a human’s most critical lesson to learn; without such control over our own emotional state, we are susceptible to manipulation by those who serve only themselves. People learn to ‘believe’ instead of learning to ‘learn’, thus developing the habit of NOT thinking, but, making decisions based on beliefs, which were motivated by their fear…. As can be observed throughout history, this results in a pretty miserable time for most humans, a life much harder than it needs to be.

Some days ago, when I began this exploration, I had a specific purpose in mind; that has since eroded into a number of possible arenas to explore, ultimately leading me to the conclusion I’ve again bitten off too big a bite to chew. To continue would be counter-productive at this point, with the most likely result nobody would finish reading, simply because it has become too complex to be a cogent lesson. As an attempt to regain control of our destination, I will abandon any hope of completing my treatise, & end it with some pearls which can give some direction to your thoughts, leaving it there with some reluctance, and some relief….

I’ll probably take up this gauntlet again, when I am able to focus again on the path to where I wish to go…. For now, here are three thoughts to provide some food for your own processing appetite….. Then, we’ll go finish the rest of today’s mess, so we may all get on with our day…. I think that’s the way to go, so, off we go….

The evidence of the emotions, save in cases where it has strong objective support, is really no evidence at all, for every recognizable emotion has its opposite, and if one points one way then another points the other way. Thus the familiar argument that there is an instinctive desire for immortality, and that this desire proves it to be a fact, becomes puerile when it is recalled that there is also a powerful and widespread fear of annihilation, and that this fear, on the same principle proves that there is nothing beyond the grave. Such childish proofs are typically theological, and they remain theological even when they are adduced by men who like to flatter themselves by believing that they are scientific gents…” — H. L. Mencken

“I know that most men, including those at ease with problems of the greatest complexity, can seldom accept even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such as would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have delighted in explaining to colleges, which they have proudly taught to others, and which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabric of their lives.” — Tolstoy

“The spirit is fascinated by the future, wants to know the meaning of everything, and would like to stretch, if not break altogether, the laws of nature through technology or prayer. It is full of ideals and ambition, and is a necessary, rewarding, and inspiring aspect of human life. The soul is… embedded in the details of ordinary, everyday experience. In the spirit we try to transcend our humanity; in the soul, we try to enter our humanity fully and realize it completely.” — Thomas Moore

Whew! Made it. Okay, ffolkes, that’s enough blather from me for one day, I should think. Let’s see what else we can find to mess with….

Shall we Pearl?

the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.”

Intelligent Crimes

The value of wit is often said to cause harm,
for those who think, such is its greatest charm.
The new and the bold cannot be fulfilled
if innovation and change is left unwilled.

Society behaves at its base as a mob
conformity and submission its primary job.
Any sign of rebellion against the mob’s rule
is met with resentment, naming such rebel the fool.

Intellect and talent are looked at askance,
expressing artistry stands nary a chance.
To stand out from the rest of mankind
is fraught with danger, for body and mind.

Often I stand to watch in solemn dismay
as beauty and joy are left by the way,
ignored and reviled by the unwashed masses
who prefer darkness, and acting like asses.

With shouts of derision the normals make known
their fear of intelligence, greater than their own.
They hope to stop all semblance of progress;
for thoughts and ideas, they couldn’t care less.

The world struggles on in spite of all opposition,
managing to maintain its advanced position.
Pulling the foolish along in spite of reluctance,
helping each to learn the survival dance.

Hard though it may be to keep up with the future
genius manages its plans to develop and nurture.
In the final analysis, those who live by reason
enjoy life the most, season to season.

Hajime…. I kinda like this getting done ahead stuff; sure makes this part easier, not having to do it under the pressure of deadline. It takes a bit of creative scheduling, to get it done in between bouts of cat training & being trained by a cat, but, it seems to be working okay. As long as I can keep from talking to bureaucrats too often on the phone, it may even prove to be a workable routine altogether…. Bonus for me, and for Leelu, as she likes status quo, to a certain extent….

Today’s Pearl is a good one, even with an archived rant in the middle section…. The music makes all of it more palatable, believe me…. Just let it play while you read, and it will go down nice and smooth. Trust me. Have I ever failed you? No, of course not. After all, I do get to proof this before it goes out; I find that to be very useful for sticking to the truth, as it gives me time to find & have available any evidence for my assertions. Always handy to have the truth on one’s side, isn’t it?

Not that I’m not human; I’d lie to you for good reason. But, my concept of good, and that of most, differ widely, and, I also provide the opportunity to challenge. As a habit, I will also usually tell you when something is suspect, usually accompanied by a disclaimer, such as “fair warning”…. Then, of course, there’s the nonsense which trips so elegantly from my mind onto the screen for your perverse entertainment, but, we won’t worry about applying any standards to that…. Willie Wonka wouldn’t approve….

Okay, we’ve touched enough bases to have completely stalled the game, so, let’s be off to the oyster beds…. I think we’ll use this old-fashioned method to get us down the page, which looks like this…..

My musical preferences, as well as my political and cultural perceptions, were influenced greatly by this woman, as is most likely true of many people my age. Her voice, always regarded as one of the purest vocal instruments ever heard, can move from range to range, and melody to melody, with the ease of a slow-moving river, taking the listener’s emotions along for the ride, just from the power of what is heard…. Often, the words don’t matter, though, to be sure, she sang songs that made a big difference in the culture of the time, songs which continue to influence music today…. A legend for good reason, she is, simply, one of the very best singers ever to have raised voice….

We the People...

A new piece is in the works, sort of, but, nowhere near being ready. Hence, the following politirant from the archives, simply because I can, and it bears repeating…. Enjoy, ffolkes, this is one of my better pieces, if only for the tone…. Plus, it kinda goes with the music selection for the day….

From 3/2/2013:

“He who imitates evil always goes beyond the limits of the example, whereas he who imitates what is good, always falls short.” — Confucius

Perfect! If ever a quote could be applied to fit one group of people, this one would; it fits the folks who occupy elected office in this country like the proverbial glove. Ooh! Ooh! Here’s another one…

“Ignorance: When you don’t know something and somebody finds it out.” — Jethro Burns

Okay, that’s a good start…. Now, we all know that politicians lie to us…. It’s what we’ve taught them to do, by our calm acceptance of all the other lies they’ve told, from the very beginning. We expect them to lie… then, when we catch them at it, there is this huge public outcry, as if it had never happened before. Sometimes, the behavior of the American public toward the political beast reminds me of a shark…. to wit: no memory of the past to slow down their willingness to rush into dangerous situations….. For millions of years, sharks and dolphins have lived together in the oceans. For just about all that time, whenever a shark attacks a dolphin, it gets killed, unless the dolphin is injured in some way, or, it is a baby inadvertently left alone. Always, if things are even, the shark dies, because the dolphins are smarter, and faster swimmers.

After millions of years, you would think the sharks might learn to let them alone, but, they don’t, which is evidence of their lack of ability to learn. The American voting public has the same problem…. they never learn to expect to be lied to, and always seem surprised to learn that their elected officials are, shall we say, less than perfectly honest? It, quite frankly, drives me nuts…. What is it about people that does that to them? Why are they so unwilling to use the mind that sits between their ears, rather than just carrying it around from toilet to toilet, which is all most folks seem to do with it? (Almost forgot it was a question….) I wish I knew….

“There is one way to find out if a man is honest–ask him. If he says yes, you know he is crooked.” — Groucho Marx

I’m starting to feel a bit of anger, actually, and I have a hard time not letting it out on the voting public, the idiots. But, it really isn’t all their fault, as the people who run for office are the ones who are actively imitating evil, and, obviously, exceeding the limits of their example. And the voting public can’t help never being able to quite reach the good for which they reach. This is why I get angry about it…. The folks who run for office tell the public they are going to work for the people when they are elected; we all know they are lying, but we elect them anyway. Now, how stupid is that? Pretty stupid, in my book…..

On the one hand, the stupidity displayed by the politicians is deliberate, in its adherence to principles of theft and prevarication; on the other hand, the stupidity displayed by the voting public is, perhaps, not deliberate, but at minimum, misguided, and, ultimately, just as evil, in placing its trust in evil people. In the dispassionate view held by the universe, stupid is as stupid does, and the sentence of death is the same for both types of stupidity, deliberate and unconscious. It doesn’t care about why, it only looks at results….

What can be done about this? Not a damn thing…. Not only do I find that most people are unconsciously stupid, but they are stubborn about it, even when it is clear how being stupid is hurting them. Rather than use their minds to find a new way of dealing with these issues, they retreat into platitudes and dogma, and run right back out to vote for another idiot who promises them manna from heaven, or, more accurately, from Washington D.C. If confronted with their idiocy, they become even more stubborn, as they are unwilling to accept they might be wrong, and refuse to either examine any evidence of being wrong, or, will deny its existence altogether.

The politicians, who choose to live in stupidity, by lying and cheating and stealing from their own people, don’t even WANT to choose otherwise. Why should they? They’ve got it easy, with a ready supply of host bodies on which to practice their symbiotic parasitism, a body that not only accepts all their lies, but encourages them to even further depredations with their complete acquiescence with whatever the politicos want. All the politicians have to say is that the public is in danger, from this, that, or the other, and the public will allow them to do whatever they choose, as long as they feel safe from whatever fictional fantasy they have been told is dangerous…..

“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift; the rational mind is faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.” — Albert Einstein

It’s an interesting spectacle to observe from the sidelines, but it arouses in me a strong feeling of sadness, with the anger underlying, as I watch, day after day, as so many millions of foolish people get taken advantage of by a few assholes. It definitely makes me want to buy a gun, even though I would only use it if pressed; I have a feeling I may get pressed some day, if I continue to make noise about all this.

I’m fairly well protected thus far by a lack of notoriety; the BRC and the PTB aren’t going to worry about me until I have an audience a lot larger than a couple of hundred folks, of which perhaps fifty regularly read my work. If what I am saying began to gain popularity, and was being read by millions, I’d be in danger; until then, I’m as safe as I can make myself with the tools at hand… which, if I say so myself, are not entirely inconsequential…. If I said any more, I’d be giving away my precautions, and that wouldn’t do, so, just rest assured… I am ready to deal with anything short of assault weapons, with what I have on hand…..

“Many, if not all, of my presidential opponents are certifiable idiots.” — Miriam Defensor Santiago — The World Almanac and Book of Facts, 1993

See? I’m not completely alone! Actually, if you pay close attention, you will note this was uttered by a politician, about their peers, so it really doesn’t count as support of what I’m saying here. What, exactly am I saying here? Hmm, okay, since I’ve already written about 1200 words or so on this, it’s a good place to wind it up…. so, here goes…

Ffolkes, you are being lied to, daily, and hourly, by those who have been elected to office to look out for your interests. I hate to tell you, but those folks never intended to do anything of the sort. So, it would be a good thing if everybody in this country would OPEN THEIR FUCKING EYES AND GET A DAMN CLUE!!!!!….. I don’t think I can say it any clearer than that….. That’s all, for now…..

“Ignorance kills daily. “

Raging at Aging

As old as you feel, we are told, is old as you are,
custom assures such vision will carry us far.
Reality begs to differ, may it be so bold
it is really quite painful, and very, very cold.

The power and strength felt in our halcyon youth
desert us with age, yet another unwelcome truth.
Irony rules our time here on this bountiful earth
as we reflect the changes over time since our birth.

As physical powers fade from this fragile shell,
we learn our mind can serve us quite as well.
The strength that once filled our bones and hearts
is now applied by our will, to more arcane arts.

Life’s greatest gift is our freedom of choice
no matter how often we forget, we still get a voice.
Energy, or apathy, by our will we may choose,
failing to do so, our only way to lose.

Each of us lives in the grip of time and space,
always seeking our balance, our own chosen place.
One must accept reality, for it is true at the core,
all we can do, is all we can do, and nothing more.

Today’s final pearl is a nine-star classic style, speaking in the usual obscure way of how to look at, and approach, the complex issue of living in a complex universe as humans…. whatever THAT means…. Enjoy, ffolkes; this one, if used correctly, will end up making you feel okay about it all….

“Look round the habitable world: how few
Know their own good, or knowing it, pursue.”

~~John Dryden — Juvenal, Satire x ~~

“Words form the thread on which we string our experiences.” — Aldous Huxley, The Olive Tree

“The weather-cock on the church spire, though made of iron, would soon be broken by the storm wind if it did not understand the noble art of turning to every wind.” — Heinrich Heine

“One must learn by doing the thing; for though you think you know it, you have no certainty until you try.” — Sophocles

“The bow too tensely strung is easily broken.” — Publius Syrus (42 BC) — Maxim 388

“Honesty isn’t any policy at all; it’s a state of mind or it isn’t honesty.” — Eugene L’Hote

“All life is a conjugation of the verb “to eat”” — Subtle Bee

“If the name is not correct, the words will not ring true.” — Confucius

There are places I remember all my life,
though some have changed,
some forever, not for better,
some have gone and some remain.
All these places had their moments
with lovers and friends I still can recall.
Some are dead and some are living.
In my life I’ve loved them all.

~~ The Beatles ~~

More Galway 021

Dusk over Galway Bay

He sat in a squalid, empty room, engaged in passive questing through the reaches of time, searching for truth. Finding none, he turned away, saddened by the defunct nature implied in such a loss. “Still,” he thought to himself, with an ironic smile touching the corners of his mouth, “it could be worse. It could be raining.” With a poignant shake of the head, he slipped into a dream….

Rain poured down, filling the streets with rushing feet and pounding hearts. Beside the lamp post on the corner, he stood, dripping, with a small shadow of reality sticking to his shoe. Wiping it on the nearest centurion, as directed, he began to bail with the rest of the crowd, stopping periodically to clap his hand to his head, moaning, “Oh, for the boon of sanity!”, in stentorian tones, dulcet over the roar of water on the roofs.

Then, of course, he woke up, only to realize he was deep into the intro section already, without a plan, only a sadly over-rated trick of the trade, or two, to get him to the proper stance, where there exists a small chance of saving this from an early death, well before ever beginning to live. “What the hell is going on?”, he cried in dismay….

Strange, isn’t it, what will happen late at night, with nothing better to do than sit around making shit up in your head? I thought so, but, then, I’m the one who’s trying to find a way back to something resembling reality even slightly…. I think, perhaps, I’d best give up, and get on with the rest of today’s mess…. Whew, made it…. Not only made it, but, made it with room to spare…. Go figure….

Shall we Pearl?….

“What are the facts? Again and again and again–what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore divine revelation, forget what ‘the stars foretell,’ avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable ‘verdict of history,’ –what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue. Get the facts!”  — Lazarus Long — Robert A. Heinlein

The discussion I’m working on is not ready, so here is a little discussion from the archives, with a message of hope, once you work your way to the end…. Enjoy!….

From 3/3/2013:

“As a draft-animal is yoked in a wagon, even so the spirit is yoked in this body.” — Upanishads (c. B.C. 800)

Each of us is faced at times with the consciousness of our own approaching encounter with Death, the moment in time when our yoke is removed, and our spirit is freed, to once more join the rest of the conscious minds in the universe in roaming through realms of Reality we cannot see in this form. This Reality we cannot see is much larger, in one sense, than the one we can now perceive; it has to be, to be able to accommodate all the souls that have gone before, and all that are now present on Earth, that will someday join the rest of them, when they die…..

Every human being alive must face their own Death (I am capitalizing the word to give it the proper respect as one of the most important concepts we have as humans….); this is a truism no one can deny, or refute. Many people have banded together, to assume the belief that our universe was created this way by a supernatural being, who, for some unknown, and unknowable (self-explanatory, I think….) reason, decided that we are “special”, and gave us, and only us, the knowledge we have, and our very lives. This, of course, is rather hard to believe, as it doesn’t really account for much of what is observable truth in Reality, being, as it is, complete speculation, devoid of any concrete evidence to support it…..

“There is no conclusive evidence that there is life after death. There is also no real evidence to the contrary. Soon enough, you will know. So, why fret about it?” — Lazarus Long, aka Robert A. Heinlein

I first read this aphorism when I was in my early teens; it codified, and made succinct, what I had already concluded about the major religions of the world, i.e., they’re a collection of unwarranted, and unproven, assumptions. What’s more, they are all highly unlikely, given the observable parameters of the real world. It became obvious to me, as it is to many, that what the religious folks were trying to get me to believe was intended merely to soften my mind, making it more amenable to suggestion, of which they have an endless supply. Preachers, priests, imams, nuns, all are quite willing to give other people advice and suggestions on how they should live, in exhaustive detail, for as long as they are allowed to do so….

Since I had very little desire to have other people decide for me how I should think, or live my life, I rejected the dogma they tried to force into my head, turning instead to other sources of thought about Life, Death, and Reality. I found an endless supply of folks who had thought long and deeply about all of these ideas, and gladly did I read all I could of everything I could find on the subject. In addition, I read science fiction, during the years when its popularity had just begun to climb to the heights it now occupies; sci-fi has always been literature that explored, and continues to explore, the very limits of thought, both in the real world, and the world of the mind.

As is seen by the first pearl above, these thoughts and ideas are not new with me; mankind has been thinking about these concepts since we first sat around the campfires, wondering at the beauty of the heavens we saw above our heads, and all around us. In all that time, no conclusions have been reached that seem to cover ALL of the questions we have about the universe. We still don’t have a clue as to “what is the mind”, or “what is thought”…. and if we cannot understand ourselves, what chance do we have of unraveling the secrets of the universe around us? Not much, would be my guess…

That, fortunately, does not mean it is impossible to know the truth, nor does it mean we are condemned to die in ignorance and fear…. I know this because I have learned in my time that our fear is a direct outgrowth of our ignorance; we fear what we do not understand. Now, if I were a God, why would I make people that way, unless for some ulterior motive, having to do with motivations that are human, not divine? No, it just doesn’t make sense to me to assume that we were put here with a deliberate handicap, just to see how we dealt with it; that seems more like an evil scientist at work than a compassionate deity.

“One must marry one’s feelings to one’s beliefs and ideas.  That is probably the only way to achieve a measure of harmony in one’s life.” — Etty Hilsum

Since I believe firmly in the Law of Conservation of Energy (proven true in this universe, to all our knowledge), and, I believe that our minds/souls are a form of energy we currently don’t fully understand, and cannot perceive directly, then the concept of Death is nothing to fear, as it merely means that my current state of energy will be replaced with another state, one I don’t currently have the ability to perceive. What that state may be like may be unknown, but that doesn’t mean it is something of which I should be afraid…. I prefer to look at it as the next great adventure….

So, when my father died, I asked him to leave me some trail-sign, to let me know how to find him in the next reality; he smiled at me, and said he would do that… and I was much comforted by that, knowing that our connection as family can never be severed, and that, someday, I would once more have the pleasure, and comfort, of his presence…. Now that’s something to look forward to, don’t you think?…. Much better than worrying that what I do now is going to determine what happens to me after I die, a silly proposition, at best……

“Do not think that man is but flesh, skin, bones and veins; far from it! What really makes man is his soul; and the things we call skin, flesh, bones and veins are but a garment, a cloak; they do not constitute man. When man departs this earth, he divests himself of all the veils that conceal him.” — Zohar

Today’s poem is from T.S. Eliot. It’s a rather long poem, but, well worth reading; it is regarded as one of the most important poems of the twentieth century, with a marked influence on the poetry of the time, an influence which continues today…. I give you….

The Waste Land

April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory out of desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in a forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.

Good morning…. Well… Since I must begin my day by taking up my mantle of justice, to begin battle with a multi-national, soulless corporation and its myrmidons, this post may be late when posted, if posted today at all. If things don’t go well with AT&T, I may need to pop down to Starbucks to post it. SIGH…. I HATE corporations!

That said, I’ll go finish the Pearl, so at least it will be ready to go when I am….. Hmm…. It’s ready, sort of, but, the internet is not. I’ve had to cease engagement with the corporate ghost; not going to deal with them if they’re going to try to have it all their own way. So, internet service is a day or two away yet, so this will have to be done downtown, and I’ve already missed a day. That’s no big; we’ve still got the Tardis. But ot IS  a PITA, to be sure….

In the interests of efficiency, we’ll take off now, so we’re in position at the proper moment….. Luigi, take it away….

Shall we Pearl?….

Dont keep calm

I began collecting pearls this morning, each of which chosen seemed to be an excellent beginning for a rant about our BRC, those Asininnies of great renown. However, the group grew so large, I couldn’t think of enough to say; they said it all. So, instead, below we have an indictment pearl, with a bunch of great little statements that point out the major, and, perhaps, some of the minor, flaws in our current crop of assholes who believe they are in charge of the world….. Let’s see what they have to say, shall we?….

“We would like to apologize for the way in which politicians are represented in this programme.  It was never our intention to imply that politicians are weak-kneed, political time-servers who are more concerned with their personal vendettas and private power struggles than the problems of government, nor to suggest at any point that they sacrifice their credibility by denying free debate on vital matters in the mistaken impression that party unity comes before the well-being of the people they supposedly represent, nor to imply at any stage that they are squabbling little toadies without an ounce of concern for the vital social problems of today.  Nor indeed do we intend that viewers should consider them as crabby ulcerous little self-seeking vermin with furry legs and an excessive addiction to alcohol and certain explicit sexual practices which some people might find offensive.  We are sorry if this impression has come across.” — Monty Python

(Actually, no, we’re not…)

“Bias used to say that men ought to calculate life both as if they were fated to live a long and a short time, and that they ought to love one another as if at a future time they would come to hate one another; for that most men were bad.” — Diogenes Laertius (c. 200 AD) — Bias, v

“What’s the matter with the world? Why, there ain’t but one thing wrong with every one of us- and that’s “selfishness.” — Will Rogers

“If guns are outlawed, only the government will have guns.” — Edward Abbey

(REMEMBER!…)

Asking politicians to vote themselves out of power is like asking rabbits not to multiply, it ain’t natural. — Bob Beckel, on term limits, CBS This Morning, 3/30/95

“Every actual State is corrupt.  Good men must not obey laws too well.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), “Politics”

“Corruptissima republica plurimae leges.” [The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.] — Cornelius Tacitus, 56-120 A.D., Annals III 27

“Quem metuunt, oderunt.” (They hate whom they fear.) — Ennius (239-169 BC)

“A doctrine insulates the devout not only against the realities around them but also against their own selves. The fanatical believer is not conscious of his envy, malice, pettiness and dishonesty. There is a wall of words between his consciousness and his real self.” — Eric Hoffer

There. That should drive that point home with a sledge. Now we’ve seen just how nasty a creature the average politician is in today’s world, I’d like to leave our Gentle Reader with two thoughts, which, if utilized properly, are also an open message to the American people, and the people of all the countries in the world whose governments are trying to convince them they are in terrible danger from the forces of evil, i.e, “terrorists”….. while the entire time, THE GOVERNMENTS are the perpetrators of all the violence we see all around us…. If you just remember the truth of these two short statements, your ‘terror’ will become superfluous, and easily dismissed for the lie it is….

“We lie loudest when we lie to ourselves.” — Eric Hoffer

“When there is no enemy within, the enemies outside cannot hurt you.” — African proverb

Geezer to Congress, with Love

Politicos don’t care much ’bout seniors and their ilk,
except for their money, I thinks;
Though they talk as if they’d cozen them in silk,
what they actually do, it stinks.

“The banks are failing, we can’t allow that!”,
steal from the aged, that’s their plan.
“Their life’s ending, that’s plainly where they’re at,”
lie shamelessly, because they can.

Maybe just once, if we all act together,
it couldn’t miss.
Right on their shoes, no matter the weather,
take careful aim, and piss.

Why the hell not?
It’s worth a shot!

Standing quiet, waiting on hope’s bright wing,
a stranger heralds the gift of Time.
Lyrical, spherical melodies we sing,
yet with silence, as a mime.

If fortune favors the bold and free,
truth may be spoken with courage unveiled.
But fortune’s oft capricious and cruel,
then truth is naught but cold, with freedom failed.

Humanity has rights, ’tis often said,
if courage and truth can prevail.
If fear and ignorance are the diet we’re fed,
Life without liberty can be the only end to this tale.

What better icon to choose for a pearl whose core meaning has to do with the mind, and our use of it…. Of all the human beings who have ever lived, Aristotle’s name is, perhaps, the most well-known of all, and all who know it, know of him because of the power and scope of his thoughts. Acknowledged as one of Mankind’s most treasured representatives, he is the first example used to teach the concept of excellence, in every aspect of life. This pearl, (which, btw, has some unusual contributors today…. Hey, y’all KNOW I’m shameless about my pearls; if the foo shits, wear it…), while not quite as powerfully broad as Aristotle’s field of work, still speaks in a manner of which he would approve, as a good way to promote the proper use of the mind, our most important survival tool as humans…. Good morning…. In sooth, I really can’t tell whether the morning is of either category today. Having lost all sense of routine in my sleep habits, it is clear I actually have no habits in that regard. Dont keep calm

C’mon! You KNEW this was coming…. Better grab some trail mix and a beverage; it’s a big one….

Originally posted in January, 2013:

“Man is a rational animal who always loses his temper when he is called upon to act in accordance with the dictates of reason.” — Oscar Wilde

One may always trust Oscar Wilde to be both elegantly witty and intelligently insightful, though, to be sure, many of his most closely held views were somewhat divergent with what was commonly held to be true, philosophically. This divergence was, I believe, mostly deliberate on his part, as he tended to mock that which he did not respect, and he never had much respect for…. well, anything to do with human nature vs. reason and rationality. He mistrusted most people to act morally, and was unafraid of saying so; this, of course, made him both famous, and infamous….. His infamy, I’m sure, ultimately was his undoing, much to society’s loss; as is said so often about our brightest minds, “only the good die young….”

I often wonder, (well, maybe not so often, as much as I’m wondering now…) what the world today would be like, if somehow, some of those bright stars in history had lived to an age where their accomplishments, in relation to the advancement of human thought, and the betterment of the human condition, had a broader, and more lasting effect than their absence has left us. What if Keats had written poetry until he was 85? How many more inventions would have come to us from Nicolas Tesla, had he lived long enough for the rest of the scientific world to catch up to him, instead of hounding him to an early grave? How much more good music, and art, and literature would be available to all of us, if not for this tendency for the best of us to live as a burning meteor, flaming brightly through the sky, until burned out and lifeless?

It is a sad commentary for society to know that it is often the very brilliance of these people that brings about their downfall, at the hands of the ignorant, and the avaricious…. What is even sadder, to me, is that this demonstrates another part of human nature that is responsible for almost every issue in human history, and current society, that causes people to suffer pain, oppression, perpetual struggle, and will most certainly ultimately   lead to the extinction of our species, on this planet, at minimum, if not completely…..

That piece of our nature is the unfortunate characteristic, in a number of humans, to be able to put aside all conscience, and act solely in their own self interest. All of us, of course, possess this to some degree; it is an outgrowth of having a will to survive. To these few others, it is their primary modus operandi; they simply do not take other people, or their concerns, into account when deciding what they are going to do, and are not hampered by the consideration of any suffering they may cause other people, animals, or things.

As is patently obvious, to my mind, every elected official, every high level preacher, every corporate magnate, and a great many lawyers, are all of this ilk, and have, for nearly 230 years now, been quietly and efficiently plundering the pockets and rights of the American people (and those of every other country in the world, for that matter…. it is a HUMAN condition, not just American…. Ours are just some of the most obvious about it….), while simultaneously lying, cheating, and otherwise acting to secure their stranglehold on society.

Anyone who disagrees with this assessment, quite simply, isn’t paying enough attention to the world around them….. Sorry to be so blunt, but the facts are all laid out, right there, almost every day in the news media, if one knows how to look at the larger picture it presents, rather than the individual facets of that picture. Focusing on the little shit is just what those in power wish for people to do…. it keeps them busy not noticing other, more incriminating stuff they are carrying out, in the darkness where they mostly live….

“… change depends on individual acts of courage and commitment. Most such acts are private, invisible, and uncelebrated. But some find a place in the public spotlight; and their influence goes far beyond mere example.” — Arthur C. Clarke & Michael Kube-McDowell,  The Trigger, 1999

Each and every one of us, in the face of what we know about reality, is responsible in some way, and to some degree, for both the way things are, and the way they will be in the future. If you don’t believe that, well, discussion is, for you, probably useless, and little hope remains. For anyone with moderate insight, however, this is plain, clear truth, and we all need to accept it before any significant progress can be expected against those who are sociopathic, which I define, and hereby name, as homo suicidus, those who would kill us all…. But, it is imperative that we act soon, for the damage we have done, and continue to do to our world, is at a point where the effects are nearly irreversible, and even if we manage to wrest control from the beloved ruling class,it may be too late to save our lives….

“In regard to disagreeable and formidable things, prudence does not consist in evasion, or in flight, but in courage. He who wishes to walk in the most peaceful parts of life with any serenity must screw himself up to resolution. Let him front the object of his worst apprehension, and his stoutness will commonly make his fear groundless.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson, _Essays_, Prudence

It is my hope, small and pale though it be, that we WILL speak up, that the rational among us will rise up, and take back the control of our destiny from the hands of those who would see us all die, rather than give up their own control. It will only happen when men of courage, as defined by Mr. Emerson, stand up to those who would render us all impotent, for their own benefit. The only hope that exists for the rest of us lies in enough of us showing this kind of courage, and overcoming the fear that keeps us in thrall…..

“I cannot praise a fugitive and cloistered virtue, unexercised and unbreathed, that never sallies out and sees her adversary, but slinks out of the race where that immortal garland is to be run for, not without dust and heat.” — John Milton (1608-1674) — Areopagitica

Myself, I don’t want to die ignominiously, gasping for breath, because I didn’t have the courage to speak up, and to fight back against the immoral, avaricious assholes who dominate society….. Instead, let’s create a whole new world, without a beloved ruling class, at all….. Who knows? We might just find out that anarchy works!….. Worth a try, I think….. And, if it doesn’t work, well, we can always try a technocracy, which we have yet to do in history….. With a bit of foresight and planning, it might just be what we need to survive our own foolishness… Maybe, Richard Brautigan had the truest prophetic vision, when he wrote “All watched over, by machines of loving grace….”

“Every act of creation is first of all an act of destruction.”

~~ Pablo Picasso ~~

History, despite its wrenching pain,
Cannot be unlived, but if faced
With courage, need not be lived again.

Since I can barely see, much less maintain a coherent train of logical thought, unless it has to do with the process of consuming coffee, we’ll go with a philosophical meander from the archives…. I always have fun with Descartes; he was so damned positive!…. Any who, enjoy!….

Or, not…. We like to give ffolkes the choice….

From 2/10/2013:

“…it is now some years since I detected how many were the false beliefs that I had believed to be true since my earliest youth.  And since that time, I have been convinced that I must once and for all seriously try to rid myself of all the opinions which I had formerly accepted, and begin to build anew, if I wanted to establish any firm and permanent structure for my beliefs.” — Rene Descartes, Meditations

And, after due consideration, he came up with, “I think, therefore I am.” That’s it…. after all his steady cogitation, all his heavy thought, he comes up with six words….. Seems like he might have gone a bit further with it, since he was already thinking, but, hey, that’s just me…..  He probably got distracted solving a quadratic equation in his head, or something equally fascinating, and just wrote down the first thing that came to him….. I suspect a lot of philosophies start that way, if what is in them is any indication…. Many of the ancient philosophies seem to me to have been put together during a drunken night around a campfire, and copied down the next day while hung over….

Actually, Descartes “I think” statement is one of the more consistent and logical of the statements that speak to belief, and its origins. I cannot say it is logically unassailable, for it is not, but, it is consistent within its own paradigm. This logical flaw is one reason I modified the idea when I came to make my own set of philosophical assertions, Peruaosophy…. where I said, in Axiom #1, “I think I am…. that’s close enough.”….. Much more tautological, I would say, and not subject to the same sort of picking apart, as it has no holes in it. Well, actually, it’s so holey it doesn’t need air-conditioning, but that is what supplies that logical strength, as it is a flexible enough proposition to fit any size mind….

It is not what we eat but what we digest that makes us strong,
It is not what we read but what we remember that makes us wise,
It is not what we earn but what we save that makes us rich,
It is not what beliefs we hold but what we do with those beliefs that make us what we are.

— Old Chinese misquotation.

You gotta love honesty…. I love that this is so aptly named as a misquotation; that kind of honesty just tickles my fancy, and makes for some good mental exercise…. In this case, it means trying to figure out WHICH part is misquoted, a process by which one can learn a lot, both about what is said in the quote, or misquote, and about themselves, and how their mind works. If it works, that is….

I am not sure exactly where this pearl is going…. it started out okay, but seems to be wandering a bit now, and I can’t seem to figure out how to find the way back to my original intent….. must be time for fresh coffee…. be right back….

“We begin life with a seemingly blank slate, and, though the writing that gradually appears on that slate is not our own, our judgment of the things written thereon determines what we are and what we will become. In much the same way, our work will be judged by the use to which other people put it…” — Marion Zimmer Bradley, _The Codex of Riveda_

What, then, is the mind? What is consciousness? We know they exist, for we perceive ourselves as a separate entity from the rest of what we perceive. Encountering other minds serves as corroboration of our perceptions, while at the same time offering solace for our separation from the universe, trapped alone in the confines of our minds, with only our own thoughts as company. I don’t know about anyone else, but just knowing there are others who are in the same boat is a comforting thought….. It’s a big universe, full of dark and dangerous energy, as well as beauty and opportunities for joy, and it would be a shame to have no one with whom to share it all….

“The mind of man is far from the nature of a clear and equal glass, wherein the beams of things should reflect according to their true incidence.” — Sir Francis Bacon

I suppose I’m just wandering now, rambling around in my own mind, without a clue as to how to bring this to a close…. but, here goes….

“I think I am…. that’s close enough.”  This is MY philosophy of life, and my take on consciousness…. As I see it, I know I’m here, and I know what I can do in my own mind….. and no matter what the rest of the universe is up to, or believes, that’s enough for me. I don’t need confirmation of my existence, or permission from a  supernatural entity, or anyone else, to live my life the way I choose.

Mssr. Descartes statement is, to my mind, too stiff, too formal, and doesn’t meet the test of illogic…. We all interpret Reality in our own way, according to our own perceptions of that Reality, and our own set of decisions about how we will approach life…. our attitudes, as it were. We can make those attitudes whatever we choose, regardless of how clear are our motives to others; in my mind, all living creatures have that right…. with, of course, the caveat that whatever attitudes we choose must be able to merge with the attitudes of others, or, at least, not step on the other person’s right to the same freedom of choice…..

In short…. You were issued a mind when you came into this universe…. It would be a good thing, for you, and, for the universe, to learn to use it….

Just a suggestion…. The reason I urge each and every one to make this effort is my strong belief in Axiom #2 of Peruaosophy, perhaps the most accurate, and powerfully influential, of all the axioms therein…. to wit:

Axiom #2: “The Nature of the Universe is Change. Unpredictable, innovative Transformation of Reality is the Norm. If you have a problem with this, you are in for a Rough Ride.”

Because the poem percolating somewhere in my head isn’t ready, and, simply because I can, here’s another of my own poems from the archives….

Momentary Terror

Absently casual, memories pester endlessly
leaving only bleeding remnants, amiable and loving.
Coming awake, I cry to still the pain, shamelessly.

Elsewhen, time gives surcease, if only to live,
shoring broken pilings, worn and gray.
Passing on, I laugh at the pain, accept all it will give.

Time will build a shelter, warm and ever safe
   save for Fate’s busy hands.
Enduring, I follow the pain, knowing it will chafe.

Fixed against a darkened sky of starry black
such beauty brings us to our knees.
Entranced, I welcome the pain, ’tis all I lack…..

Smart Bee is showing some recalcitrance this week, making the process of creating new pearls a bit sticky, as well as time consuming…. This one turned out pretty well, if a bit more esoteric than our usual fare…. As the logo icon indicates, it’s about Life at Large, with some ideas on how it might be lived with some dignity….

Full little knowest thou that hast not tride,
What hell it is in suing long to bide:
To loose good dayes, that might be better spent;
To wast long nights in pensive discontent;
To speed to-day, to be put back to-morrow;
To feed on hope, to pine with feare and sorrow.

To fret thy soule with crosses and with cares;
To eate thy heart through comfortlesse dispaires;
To fawne, to crowche, to waite, to ride, to ronne,
To spend, to give, to want, to be undonne.
Unhappie wight, borne to desastrous end,
That doth his life in so long tendance spend!

“Virtue is a habit of the mind, consistent with nature and moderation and reason.” — Cicero

“I value kindness to human beings first of all, and kindness to animals.  I don’t respect the law; I have a total irreverence for anything connected with society except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, and old men and women warmer in the winter, and happier in the summer.” — Brendan Behan

“If life must not be taken too seriously, then so neither must death.” — Samuel Butler

“If it is not seemly, do it not; if it is not true, speak it not.” — Marcus Aurelius Antoninus — Meditations, xii, 17

“Cursed is he that does not know when to shut his mind. An open mind is all very well in its way, but it ought not to be so open that there is no keeping anything in or out of it. It should be capable of shutting its doors sometimes, or may be found a little draughty.” — Samuel Butler

Considering the state of mind with which this Pearl was begun, combined with the state now extant, it’s a damn good thing it’s done. Good morning, ffolkes…..

Lately, I’ve been leaving the intro right there, with pretty good results. However, this morning (a morning unlike any other, which, thanks to the conveniently timely application of Time Lord powers, is yesterday afternoon, about 18 hours from now, in the past, which will soon be the present, no longer the future; of course, now can never be the future again, unless….. Oh, never mind…), I must comment, if superfluously, on the opening quote, which you see above the moon up there at the top today.

Generally, when I include something from the Christian Bible, whether Old, or New Testament, or whatever version, it is for the purpose of sardonicism, or, as an example of the delusional content one finds in such copious abundance nested within its pages. I don’t really mean to be mean; it’s just the sheer implausibility of the whole story made any sense to me, and I don’t understand how anyone with a functioning neuron can buy into any of it. This, I suppose, makes me sound somewhat antagonistic to them, though I’m really not… I just wish they weren’t so fanatical about everyone else having to feel the same way. (You’ll note I didn’t say think the same way…. It wouldn’t apply….)

This particular phrase may be, in my estimation, and, according to my memory of what I’ve read of the silly collection of improbable stories, (That comes to approximately 95% of it… Well, c’mon! Nobody reads every single “Absophel begat Paraceltic, who begat Miriam, Peter, and little Bubba, etc….” I’ll bet YOU didn’t read every damn one of them!…. We ALL skipped over that part….), simply put, the truest statement in the entire book…. As well, it has the added caveat of being applicable to just about every thinking person on this planet, thanks in large part to the massive power of delusional thinking so encouraged by faith-based religions….

“I have been a stranger in a strange land.” What a powerfully vague metaphor, vague enough to suit each and every person who finds themselves, as I often do, wondering just how the hell we ended up here, where almost everyone we see, or engage with, is pursuing illusions, based on delusions, manipulated by amoral, evil versions of themselves, rushing down a dark corridor toward a future none of them, master or slave, are going to like at all…. From what I can tell in over 60 years of watching people, most of them aren’t real happy with what they already have for a life….

It’s getting really, really weird out in the BBR, ffolkes, especially if one is able to view the overall picture of all the crap happening, all over the world, as we, and the majority of everyone alive, even those who believe in supernatural safety nets, blindly rush headlong toward a final solution to the problems plaguing this planet….

Oops…. Did it again, didn’t I? Oh, well, it’s going to happen now and again; try not to let it worry you. All of us have our own axes to grind, and our own gardens to tend. Maybe, since we’re alive, there is hope…. We are human, after all, and our imagination has, so far, been equal to the task of figuring out how to get us where we need to be, physically, and, intellectually.

Now, if it can extend that influence to the advancement of the human spirit, to allow us to mature past the need to prey upon others, there is a slight chance we may live to see new stars, new planets, new galaxies…. In short, our true legacy, to understand the Universe, as best we may…. The Universe itself doesn’t care, one way or the other, whether we do, or not; it makes a big difference to me, and a lot of other ffolkes, I’d think….

Shall we Pearl?

“Never frighten a little man. He’ll kill you.” — Lazarus Long, from Robert A. Heinlein’s “Time Enough For Love”

How’s THAT for a quick change of direction?…..

Sherlock is The Man, of course, when it comes to deductive reasoning and the power of observation. I think this is my favorite story of his exploits; it certainly lends itself well to the movie/TV genre, as produced by the BBC. Here is one of two adaptations of the story, this one with Peter Cushing in the title role, the other, which I could not find in the version I saw on YT, (don’t know where it went) starred Jeremy Brett as Sherlock. Both are excellently done, with humor, and typical Holmesian deductive investigation…. Enjoy!….

Dont keep calm

Here’s a pretty good rant from quite a while ago…. For some unknown reason, I’m always surprised at how relevant these old rants remain in the current world…. It’s as if humanity has completely stopped progressing in any direction but one of self-destruction…. SIGH….

From 8/27/2012:

“In Christianity neither morality nor religion come into contact with reality at any point.” — Friedrich Nietzsche

In perfect demonstration of the accuracy of Herr Nietzsche’s assertion, I give you, Senator Dan Quayle, a veritable paragon of Christianity, speaking, with absolute faith, and insane illogic, the rigid and hateful prejudices as obsessed over by the Church of the Brain Dead….. one of many such cults common to the not-so-outer-fringes of the Christian, Muslim, Jewish, and other religions, all of which are prone to creation of pockets of entirely too vocal enclaves of zealous fundamentalists, who spew their strident hatred and bigotry all over the innocent, and the different….

“You’re a very strong woman… Though this would be a traumatic experience that you would never forget, I think that you would be very successful in life.” — Senator Dan Quayle telling an 11-year-old girl — why he would want her to have the baby if she were raped — by her father, 10/18/88 (reported in Esquire, 8/92)

After you have recovered from the shock of encountering (again) such abject inhumanity, racism, bigotry, you name it and they are doing it (‘they’ being anyone who even listens to this tripe without gagging, and including any other religious zealotry as practiced in other religions beside the Christian cults) (cults is the correct word, trust me….), I’d like to scare you even further, so take a deep breath….

“If I seem to take part in politics, it is only because politics encircles us today like the coil of a snake from which one cannot get out, no matter how much one tries. I wish therefore to wrestle with the snake.” — Mahatma Gandhi

The just released, official platform of the Republican Party for the 2012 election, lays out in clear detail the very spirit of what Mr. Quayle is quoted to say above. Their stances on women’s healthcare and basic rights to decide for themselves how to live, LGBT rights and marriage (in)equality, immigration, tax cuts for the rich, tax raises for the middle class, continued reliance on the same failed economic policies that killed the economy (trickle-down theory, supply side economics), cuts and actual elimination of Social Security and Medicare for seniors, voter suppression techniques reminiscent of the post-Civil War era….all are designed to turn back the clock to the middle of the last century, and further, in the case of women’s rights, and voter’s rights for minorities (which are no longer minorities….).

“Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.” — H. L. Mencken

The frightened white, rich bankers and politicos are starting to realize that they are no longer actually in the majority…. close, but not enough to matter, since many, many of us honkies are technically on the other side of the fence, having more faith in humanity and basic human rights, than in religious zealotry, and fear under the guise of politics.

This is so true….. It is insight like this into the very nature of man that frightens the beloved ruling class, and has since the time of Tolstoy, and before. The complacent culture that has derived from the young, energetic society of our forebears has lost the will to suffer change. They cannot imagine life different from what they know, and don’t wish to know.

Unfortunately for them, and fortunately for the rest of us here in the real world, there are now more of us than there are of them….. provided all of us who know, and care, get out there to vote in November. It is a matter of making the, to me, obvious choice, to take a path that leads to a future for all of us, instead taking us back to a time that no longer exists, and is meant only for a few….. It’s a no-brainer, to my way of thinking….

“Is a tattoo real, like a curb or a battleship?  Or are we suffering in Safeway?” — Zippy the Pinhead

Take care ffolkes, we don’t want to end up suffering in Safeway…… really, you don’t want to do that…..  I can testify…..

A disciple of another sect once came to Drescher as he was eating his morning meal.  “I would like to give you this personality test”, said the outsider, “because I want you to be happy.” Drescher took the paper that was offered him and put it into the toaster- “I wish the toaster to be happy too”. — AI koan

Written 9/6/2012:

Dreaming, I wait….

In the most patient moments of rationality
kindness flows smoothly in a special milieu,
fallow thoughts speed first from equality
to give no anxious fever, anger to eschew.

Indignant mothers and step-sons in-law
shall fade simply from brilliant to grey,
intoning ritual dogma, fresh, avid, and raw,
falling, falling, in massive pastoral disarray.

Safety lives not, save brightly in ignorant bliss,
it follows us all, silent and infinitely frail,
foremost too often, soft as a virgin kiss,
alive, always eager, willing, and pale.

Intimate knowledge finds only the bold few
with courage and virtue to gift, unbidden.
No solemn royal version may pass in review,
true love for man, never to remain unhidden.

Sweet feathers of Emily’s hope uplift,
calm, drowsy episodes bursting with light,
With final glad cries we set ourselves adrift,
swimming in the oceans of natural delight.

When sorrow is banished, in ages yet to come,
roots solidly anchored, cold and remote,
Ample supplies of kindness sit silent and dumb,
and the old stranger shrugs on his faded coat.

Dreaming, then, I wait with shadows in the night
aspiring to inspire, a message from the muse’s heart
Never forgotten images, framed in color bright,
tempt me only, grieving, steeped in serenity’s arcane art.

About Hopi Indian Symbols

Smart Bee is in full rebellion, it seems, so I’ve sent it to a resort for a day or two to recover its equilibrium…. Here is a pearl from the archives…. Enjoy!….

From 5/6/2013:

Just so everything today isn’t old and creaky, I’m putting together an old-school group of pearls for your delectation…. Hopefully, this, too, will feel the freedom of a Murphy-less morning, and turn out well, and quickly…. I think this one might make it onto the Quiz, so you might want to take notes….

“God is an invention of Man. So the nature of God is only a shallow mystery. The deep mystery is the nature of Man.” — Nanrei Kobori,

“To a rational being it is the same thing to act according to nature and according to reason.” — Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (121-180 AD) — Meditations, vii, 11

A Rather Obvious Metaphor for Political Truth

No, I’m not going to explain the caption. If you can’t figure it out, well, sorry ’bout that. I don’t have time to tell y….. Oh, wait. Right. I forgot; Time Lord powers… Okay… It’s simple enough. It’s a beautiful rose, (duh…) a plant which will grow almost anywhere, if it’s fed with bullshit, to produce a lovely flower, which lasts for a while, then decomposes into more vegetable debris. Little pieces of the petals can be used, (small lies) to make other stuff smell better…. Just like all the stuff the politicians tell us, claiming it to be the truth, straight from the horse’s mouth, when, actually, the stuff we hear is generally better described as what comes out the other end of the horse….

Okay, now, I’ve turned Time back on, so we can get on with it, rather than allowing me to expand the above paragraph all the way into another rant in the intro…. It probably would have fallen apart along the way anyway, as the metaphor really isn’t that strong. It’s my own picture, though, so I had to come up with SOMETHING to say about it, right? Right. Now that’s settled, we can really get down to tacks, as should have been the case about two paragraphs ago….. SIGH…. Some day, I’ll figure out this intro stuff….

That won’t happen today, however, so, let’s get ruthless again, & get on with this mess. Soonest started, soonest done, as they say. Keep your seats in the upright position, please, the pilot’s a bit nervous about this landing…. but, don’t worry, we’re insured…. Now, settle down; we can do this, okay? Okay…..

About Hopi Indian Symbols

I seem to have lost the ability, or, at least, the motivation to rant. For the nonce, this old-school pearl will have to do…. It’s a group of comments about, well, stuff. Important stuff, sorta…. Works for me….

“All dogmas perish the thinking mind, especially ones you agree with.” — Adam Richardson

“Dear God, help me become the kind of person my dog thinks I am.” — Winner of National Enquirer’s favorite prayer

“Abolition of a woman’s right to abortion, when and if she wants it, amounts to compulsory maternity: form of rape by the State.” — Edward Abbey

“Xenophanes said, “I confess myself the greatest coward in the world, for I dare not do an ill thing.” — Plutarch (46-120 AD) — Of Bashfulness

“Superstition, idolatry, and hypocrisy have ample wages, but truth goes a-begging.” — Martin Luther

“Good health and good sense are two of life’s greatest blessings.” — Publius Syrus (42 BC) — Maxim 827

Emily-Dickinson

On days such as this, my mind/spirit turns to one poet….

Joy to have merited the Pain
Joy to have merited the Pain—
To merit the Release—
Joy to have perished every step—
To Compass Paradise—

Pardon—to look upon thy face—
With these old fashioned Eyes—
Better than new—could be—for that—
Though bought in Paradise—

Because they looked on thee before—
And thou hast looked on them—
Prove Me—My Hazel Witnesses
The features are the same—

So fleet thou wert, when present—
So infinite—when gone—
An Orient’s Apparition—
Remanded of the Morn—

The Height I recollect—
‘Twas even with the Hills—
The Depth upon my Soul was notched—
As Floods—on Whites of Wheels—

To Haunt—till Time have dropped
His last Decade away,
And Haunting actualize—to last
At least—Eternity—

Should you not be able to tell before reaching the end of this section today, I am not exactly at my best,  & I wanted to give you a head’s up as to the reason why I am in this state, as well as ask you to bear with me, if I get too…. well…. too weird. You will admit, I hope, that to admit any such thing is strange enough for any one day, even for me, if only for the reason it is pretty odd to consider anything we do here as anything other than weird to begin with. For me to admit to it is akin to Barry the O admitting his lies in front of the entire nation. In short, if it gets too weird, feel free to skip down to the video to ease the shock…. You’ll need the serenity to get through today’s rant….

The reason for my possible tendency to display more than the usual degree of wobble today can be directly attributed to the past 48 hours, during which the increased level of pain, the tardive dyskinesia from lacking enough medication to deal with the pain, AND, the stress level created by fighting both of them while simultaneously trying to rationalize to myself WHY I am in this condition, all peaked at once, sending me into HELL, stranding me there for hours at a time, with only short, unpredictable breaks from it all, when I could rest a bit, breathe, and try not to let the rage filling my consciousness become so strong I give in to the urge to go down to the nearest available store that sells weapons, buy a long rifle and scope, ammunition aplenty, and head out to begin hunting appropriate targets, all of whom would be easy to find, wandering around the nearest Kaiser facility…..

This is the first point where my regular Gentle Readers may begin to suspect I am in more than the usual state of anger and frustration that is, oh, so naturally engendered, by trying to deal with the insanity of a soulless multinational billion-dollar corporation, run by bankers and lawyers, who control the medical community with the insane amount of money that comes from stealing from the public, trading on their sickness and misery, charging outrageous prices for the medical care which SHOULD be the given right of every living member of any truly human society.

The sort of interpersonal interaction that is implied by the very nature of healthcare is, in my mind, one of the very reasons, possibly one of the most important of any such reasons, we humans form societies in the first place, for the advantage to be gained by living in a way which supports and encourages the well-being of every member of that society…

When I say my readers will know I am upset, it will be for the simple clue I’ve left them in two of the above paragraphs…. Note, if you will, without even thinking about it, or trying in any way to do so, each of those paragraphs (the 2nd, and 3rd after the picture) consists of one perfectly punctuated, long winded, crazily organized, but, understandable run-on sentence, covering more than one simple thought, almost as if I were ranting out loud, with my words tumbling faster and faster as they slide off my tongue, without taking a breath, for two or three minutes…. Whew! I almost need to catch my breath, and all I’m doing now is typing while sitting uncomfortably in a chair….

This sort of angst, a not terribly frequent sort of visitor to my psyche, thank goodness, is not merely enervating, while simultaneously depressing to experience, it is almost actively painful to have to deal with, for it arises from a sense of injustice, the result of having suffered harm for no good reason, other than the whim and indifference of a soulless corporate entity, whose “personhood” in the eyes of the law allows them to routinely perform acts which flesh and blood humans are proscribed, such as denying the rights of anyone, for the sake of profit.

The sheer injustice of such laws, which allow these unnatural conglomerates of resources and power to prey upon humanity, reserving the bulk of the resources, which belong to ALL of society, for their own use, to maintain their oppressive hold over the rest of their species, all for personal gain, laws which have been enacted because these same bankers, lawyers, dogma dogs, and their mindless myrmidons, in their body armor, helmets and automatic weapons of death and destruction, have been eminently successful in corrupting the courts of this country, beginning within hours of the ink drying on the US Constitution.

That assault upon the laws of our country continued right up to the middle of the 19th century, (reinforced by today’s even more corrupt judges) when pervasive influence of corrupt bankers achieved their ultimate goal, to corrupt a Federal judge so far as to grant them the boon of legal personhood, paving the way for what we see today…. Even if I CAN write a run-on sentence like nobody’s business, I can’t quite get to a point where I can be coherent in trying to describe such immensity of evil, and the crushing weight of the sheer injustice of such perverse corruption.

Gosh, I think I’ve done it again, this time to a degree hard to reconcile with how miserably I feel; how I typed this much without having my hands go numb is a complete mystery…. One so distracting, I’ve never actually gotten around to finishing the reason for today’s extraordinary level of weird and strange.

(almost sounds like a law office, doesn’t it? “Hello, this is the law offices of Weird and Strange, LLC…..”) (You DO know, don’t you, what the “LLC” behind a law office name means, right? It means they have incorporated their law offices, into a legal corporation, thus, handily claiming the rights of “corporate personhood”, much greater than those of the average, flesh-covered variety of citizen, with the complete legal authority to financially prey on society, complete with the right to lie, steal, and otherwise do whatever is necessary to maintain their chosen profit margin, no matter the cost in human suffering to their victims, er, customers….)

Funny how I keep distracting myself, isn’t it? Any who, the other part of the reason I’m in this state has to do with the time…. I’m starting today’s Pearl at oh shit. No, that’s not right; sorry, I surprised myself. I’m not sure of the exact time I started, as I was a bit blurry at the time I gave up trying to sleep through the urge to jump out of my skin, at, I think, 12:47 AM… Yes, that’s forty-seven minutes after midnight, about four hours after I finally got a sufficient handle on the pain to get to bed. It’s now 0155, a bit over an hour later, & I’ve been typing for much of that time, when not pacing around ranting to myself to give my bones a break from the chair…

So, here I am, once again driven out of bed by the completely dispassionate machinations of a soulless corporate entity, fully deserving of the name I award them as of this moment, to wit: Ultimate Assholes, for actions of deliberate evil intent, designed to manipulate me into complying with their own insane moral code, sending me into a version of physical and mental hell, simply because they want me to shell out more than I have been, putting into THEIR pockets all the money I’ve been spending elsewhere, using both the threat, and the act, of punishment for any resistance, causing in me immediate and increased levels of pain and misery, as a direct result of their exercise of power.

Later, in a few hours, I will go to the doctor’s office, at great effort and expense on my part, to do battle with them over this issue. I’m well prepared, and, by the time I get there, will be in what I know will be a full-out, incredibly huge, long-nurtured, righteous RAGE, which I will use as fuel, for the energy I need to place said rage upon their heads, and spirits, with great vigor and velocity, hopefully causing large amounts of pain and suffering, as the just reward for their stupid underestimation of me, and their intransigent insanity to believe I would stand for it…. They will, I guarantee, rue the day they decided to fuck with me….

Think I’m grandiose? Well, just be patient, and keep your eyes on the news. If they keep it up, they, and I, will end up there, for sure and for certain. I can also guarantee that they will NOT appreciate, or enjoy, the events which will put us both in the public eye…. That much, I will personally make sure of, if it kills me in the process….

I may be grandiose, but, I’m pretty sure my rage is equal to the task; they know not what they have done…. NOBODY is granted the right, or the privilege, of stepping on my rights without suffering the just consequences, which it is my intention to make as painful, if not more so, than what has been done to me… Sorry, but, a slave’s collar just never fit me very well; it chafes, terribly. I refuse, categorically, to wear one, regardless of the consequences, for me, or for the poor fool who tries to make me wear one…

(I’ve never been entirely certain as to EXACTLY what “categorically refusing” actually means, but, it certainly SOUNDS more impressive that way, don’t you think? I do….)

Fair warning….

Shall we Pearl?

Since the rest of today promises to be a bit tense and stressful, lets see what we can find for a bit of fun…. Okay, well, this works….. In fact, I can’t think of a better act to suit the mood promised by today’s events…. Enjoy, ffolkes, it might be MY last chance to feel this light-hearted for a good long while….

“Being good at being stupid doesn’t count.”

~~ Smart Bee, with gigoid’s complete agreement ~~

Thomas Carlyle once said, “The three great elements of modern civilization, Gunpowder, Printing, and the Protestant Religion.” Though I believe he may have had a certain mischievousness in mind when he said it, knowing it would invite comment, he hit the head of the nail more squarely than he knew. The three elements he assigns to such an exalted position are three which afford the elite ruling class all the tools they need to continue their millennia-long oppression of the world’s less fortunate.

Guns, to enforce their authority; Printing, the means to spread lies and misinformation far and wide; and, most serendipitously, the Protestant Religion, that bastion of support for those who rule… This corrupt institution, by its nature, supplies a cadre of trained manipulators, conversant with the process of brainwashing the ignorant into believing a rather improbable delusional system, designed to establish, and maintain, a form of mental control over the weak-minded and ignorant, playing perfectly on their most powerful fears. These master manipulators then proceed to extend the scope of their lies to include the fostering of respect for temporal authority equal to respect for the sanctity of religious dogma.

The most common message of every religion on Earth, insidiously hidden in pious, grand-sounding lies, effectively persuades their penitents, long since convinced of their own unworthiness, into slavish submission to worldly authority, like the good little sheep they are. In reward for wearing the slave’s collar, they receive a most solemn promise of life everlasting, AFTER they die, all for the privilege of surrendering their minds and souls now…. Kind of brings the opening quote, about stupid, into stark relief, doesn’t it?…. Remember this point, it will be important further down the page.

“It’s not what you call me — it’s what I answer to.” — African proverb

Whoa! Deep waters, here, ffolkes…. While performing some system maintenance yesterday, I had to reboot the computer. Smart Bee starts up during the boot sequence, leaving itself centered in the screen as the first program of the day I view, with its first offering laid out for my perusal. The proverb you see is what I first saw, whereupon I reacted how you see in the first word of this paragraph, with shock and awe at the depth and scope of the metaphor contained in this little gem. It is, at once, a very powerful reminder of our own center, and the power which is available there for those who can use it, a form of magic to many people, but, simply acknowledgment of one’s own correct place in the universe.

The other side of the powerful meaning, hidden by its very simplicity, is how to apply that power…. There is powerful magic in knowing the true name of a thing, whether that thing is animate, or inanimate. Knowing the true name of things imparts the wisdom of knowing, inherently, the truth of any proposition, thus, the advantage of seeing the real nature of any interaction between people; in essence, it reveals motivation.

We all know, to some degree, below the level of conscious thought, how to do this. How many times have you met someone, who tells you their name, but, you can clearly see the word “fool”, or “asshole” in the depths of their eyes…. Sometimes, the true name of a person seems stapled to their forehead, or flashing in neon letters over their head, it is so obvious… Others have learned to conceal their true name behind distracting behaviors, or false displays of virtue, for the purpose of betrayal…. People are diverse creatures, thanks to good ol’ DNA, which seems to have limitless ability to combine in unique configurations, making people as unique as the word itself.

When we meet someone, we call them by certain names; sir, mister, doctor, madam, miss, etc. When we don’t exactly know their true nature. these words give us, and them, clues as to how to determine one’s best approach to the person, to meet the motivational impetus toward the desired goal, obviously, different for each. In our minds, whatever name, or word, used is likely to be influenced by our own perceptions, below the conscious, surface thoughts we have, no matter what the person’s name or title might be in their own minds. For example, when a doctor thinks of his patient, a certain set of attitudes are generated, then used as motivation, for however the doctor treats the individual.

Most often, in my experience, the doctor makes the assumption of their own inherent superiority, in knowledge, in authority, in status, for whatever reasons they have found to be comfortable for them to use as their justification/rationalization of their attitude. The patient is thus automatically placed in the unenviable position of having to deal with a person who starts with the belief in their own rightness, who intends to take control of the interaction, determining the outcome according to THEIR position’s requirements and standards.

In consequence, the patient’s own feelings, thoughts, opinions, and, in essence, their rights, are completely disregarded, as not being equal in value or importance to those of the doctor…. In short, the typical doctor assumes a completely unjustified mantle of infallibility, always dependent on the use of manipulation and control, instituting a hidden contest of wills, as it were, before interaction has even begun…. But, knowing this ahead of time is the advantage possessed only by those who can see such interaction in the harsh light of reality, knowing the true nature and name to apply to the person who has assumed an adversarial position at the outset…. most people don’t see it, whether or not they can….

To my way of thinking, this sense of automatic entitlement, especially in a physician, is not merely wrong, it is reprehensible, as it goes against the grain of everything mankind has learned about the ethics needed for doctors to do their job without falling prey to the exact issue I have described, to wit: the danger of believing in their own inherent importance, simply for being entrusted with knowledge others don’t possess, thus giving them the power to harm by their simple indifference to the rights possessed by every man, woman, and child by virtue of life.

It’s my belief, strongly held, these rights, possessed by every person alive, includes the right to make the final decisions on any issue pertaining to their own health or well-being. No other person, at all, has the right to make that decision for them, without their full agreement, given freely, without coercion or influence, nor is there ANY justifiable reason, ever, for denying that right, particularly for people who are at a disadvantage due to age, or youth, gender, or physical or mental deficiencies, i.e, the weak and afflicted. Those who deny rights to anyone are, simply, without any ethical character, and can lay no claim to any sort of honor. Their mamas and daddies would be ashamed of them; if I acted like that, my father wouldn’t have had to say a word to me. I would have KNOWN he disapproved….

In the hands of a doctor, pride and arrogance are akin to a loaded weapon in the hands of a child; they can harm without awareness, justifying it by believing the ends justify the means, the time-worn fallacy common to all those who embrace such loss of humanity. A doctor who believes in their own  omnipotence, implying their infallibility, to me, is one of the most terrifying of examples of how evil can inhabit the most talented of people, destroying all sense of connection with their own humanity, replacing it with unbridled, unassailable pride in their own position as demi-gods, possessing the power of life and death over their subjects….

Now, I am not a fool; I have proof, somewhere…. I realize that many doctors are not complete assholes; some actually do care about other people, using that motivation to help whomever they can. But, they are few and far between in today’s medical model, which is founded upon the massive sense of entitlement enjoyed by the powerful, entrenched traditions so prevalent in the AMA, and other spokespeople for the medical community.

(Doctors, you see, believe they are of paramount importance in the scheme of things, more so even than the other people who assist them; nurses, aides, technicians, secretaries, all are less powerful, and less important, in their eyes, and regard…., and please, let’s not insult ANYONE’s intelligence by suggesting such an observation isn’t obvious to the most simple minded…. In fact, if you ever want an eye-opener, ask a hospital aide, or a janitor, in a hospital, about how doctors typically treat them, when they bother to even notice their presence…. If you can find one brave enough to risk their job to tell you, it will raise your brows all the way to the top of your hairline….).

The rare ethical souls, who still remember the symbolic, yet powerfully real function of the recitation of the Hippocratic Oath, which signifies commitment to its stated principles , are too few, without any organization to be of any permanent effectiveness in reforming the current model. Generally, they don’t even notice, anyway; expediency is now standard training for all American citizens…. as encouraged by those who now own the medical community, those corporate interests who run Big Pharm, and the huge HMO and insurance organizations, who are in complete control of the AMA, working hand in glove with the agencies the government maintains to regulate our lives for us….

The big corporations LIKE the doctors thinking they are powerful; but, notice, please, who must follow COMPANY protocols, in order protect their livelihood. The corporation isn’t worried about the doctors at all, for they wear their own version of the same collar worn by the general public; it’s just more stylish, and doesn’t chafe as much, as long as they don’t concern themselves with anything like self-respect, or honor.

Many people forget when looking at modern medicine, not even doctors have anything to say about what will be allowed, and what is appropriate medical theory to hold as truth. The actual people in charge of every HMO and insurance scam, of every Big Pharmaceuticals Corporation, (Merck, Lilly, etc.), are not even trained as medical personnel; they are trained businessmen, with degrees in Hospital Management, or MBA’s from Yale or Harvard, whose ONLY goal in life is to secure as much power and money (i.e, resources) as they can before they die.

The avowed purpose of Kaiser Permanente, that corporate giant so ubiquitous here in the US and around the world, is to see that their “members” THRIVE…. Do you believe, for a moment, that idea has anything at all to do with the actual purpose behind the company’s motivation? I would suggest, the company’s primary goal is to make money; if they happen to provide some services, well and good. But, their first loyalty is to the transaction, not the parties involved in the transaction. It would seem to me, their vision statement might be more accurately read as, “Protect the bottom line, and screw the rest; it doesn’t matter who suffers if it is profitable to the company.”

If one happens to look at the policies and rules by which their “members” must abide to receive any services at all, it becomes crystal clear that the only true goal in evidence is to squeeze every bit of money they can out of each individual who falls into their grasp, in a relationship which would be more accurately defined by the word “victim”, than it is now, i.e., “members” If one needs more than merely one piece of proof of the attitude Kaiser takes toward its “members”, consider the first and second questions asked by any Kaiser employee when speaking on the telephone to a person they suspect of being a “member”….

First, one is asked if one is a Kaiser member; second, one’s Kaiser number is demanded as proof of membership…. Without that number, one may not even speak to someone who might be able to help them, unless it happens to be a sales operator, perfectly willing to sign them up as a member. so they, too, can be awarded their own number, which they are perfectly free to staple on their forehead, to smooth the process of receiving medical care from their “providers”….. Or, you can just memorize it to speed up the phone conversations, as many of the Kaiser employees have learned to skip the first question, going straight to asking for the  number, which is all they really need to identify your status as a victim, er, member….

Doesn’t it all just give you a warm, fuzzy feeling? If so, you are a perfect candidate for their particular version of slavery; perhaps they’d feel less insulted if I merely called it “indentured servitude”, but, I’m not in the habit of mincing words, though  I admit to a tendency toward some lingering resentment showing through, on those occasions when I call a spade a spade…. Hard not to, when I’m speaking about events of which I have personal experience as evidence of their veracity…. I’ve a patient man, as well as a victim, er, patient of Kaiser’s, on two different occasions, for a total of more than ten years of my life, so I am quite familiar with their continuous attempts to destroy my soul, & turn me into an obedient little slave, who hangs on the doctor’s every word as if it were a direct message from God….

I figure, those who wish to “assume the position” are welcome to do so; any and all attempts, by anyone, or, anything, to force me to do so is destined to fail. I’m too old, too fucking smart (as in, NOT stupid, or weak-minded, or manipulable by any normal means…), and too mean to ever allow any such atrocity to take place. My soul’s health, my body’s health, and my mind’s health are not separate objects to me; they ARE me….  Any decisions about my condition is MINE to make, no matter how entitled anyone else may feel they may be; I guarantee, by making such a dangerous assumption, they will be taught, at their own expense, they are wrong in their assumption. Thus, they are NOT entitled to any consideration on my part, for their safety or well-being, at all, at all….

Anyone who believes they can, or are entitled to abrogate my rights, or my own decisions about anything to do with ME, is in for a most terrible disappointment, with the added risk of pissing me off…. The last entities to do so are now enjoying the hospitality of a different dimension, and the world is no wiser to their absence than that of any other insignificant insect that has passed on to another plane…. But, it’s not my job, or my chosen duty, to prevent anyone else from making mistakes they will regret; it’s only my duty to stop them when they try to do so to me. Rest assured, I have no problem with doing so….

So be it.

gigoid has spoken…. a lot, it seems.

It seems that being up most of the night and day stimulates my ranting glands, in such a way they produce massive quantities of freshly chewed material, a great deal of which seems to have been included in today’s Pearl. This, of course, means you’ll have to put up with my poetry again, to save the reputation of anyone else I might include… It’s just better for all concerned…. I hope you enjoy it anyway….

When life calls, ready or not….

Memories are all we have sometimes
to keep our sanity intact,
with learned phrases and subtle rhymes
lessening life’s vicious, vibrant impact.

Presently all seems composed and intent
in stark contrast to hollow day,
forlorn patchwork emotions of unheralded bent,
fill up night’s bower, leaving hell to pay.

Such vigorous and elevated temper
brings us rare moments to ponder,
filled with lessons all need to remember
lest base perception lose valued wonder.

Laugh loud when entropy sticks fast
leaving shameless anger in its wake.
Let bygones pass quietly into the past
reaping only what is left to take.

Final words of wise imagination
tell us living well’s the best revenge, it appears
ever eluding choirs and congregations
finally finding home, never buried in tears.

The pearl you see below is an interesting collection. When I started the process, my only intent was to find a subject by letting my subconscious mind let out a yell at the first one it liked…. My version of ghost-writing, so to speak….

Letting my mind coast through the quotes, the following pearls, along with a few others trimmed out for another rant on government malfeasance, seemed to go together, though the reason wasn’t readily apparent to my pain-distracted conscious mind. Later, I figured it out, but, would rather let it stand without any explanation, to see what happens…. Some of the included ideas come from sources I usually don’t find much use for, but, they fit in with this…. My version of a lab experiment, again, so to speak….

Whether or not any of this makes any sense to you, each pearl, taken individually, should, at the very least, stimulate the random thought or three (there appear to be a lot of them….), making it a worthwhile occupation for a couple of minutes of your valuable time….

So to speak…

“There is no ancient gentlemen but gardeners.” — William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Hamlet — Act v, Sc. 1

“Advice is probably the only free thing which people won’t take.” — Lothar Kaul

“Never ascribe to an opponent motives meaner than your own.” — John M. Barrie

“I came not to send peace, but a sword.” — Matthew 10:34

“The measure of a man’s real character is what he would do if he knew he never would be found out.” — Thomas Babington Macaulay

“Ubi solitudinem faciunt, pacem appellant.” [They make a desert, and call it peace.] — Tacitus (54-119 AD), Agricola, 30

“If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave…” — Ernest Hemingway, “A Farewell to Arms”

“Courage is the greatest of all the virtues. You cannot consistently practice any other virtues without being courageous.” — Maya Angelou

“Bow to no patron’s insolence. Rely on no frail hopes; in freedom live and die.” — Seneca

What a perfect pearl for the closing line! I’ll bet they said I couldn’t do it today, but, that has been shown, patently, not to be the case. Having thus defied the odds once again, in spite of the handicaps encountered by being up in the middle of what should have been my night of restful sleep, I shall take my leave, with more dignity than I imagined would be possible. Some quiet relief in there, too, ffolkes, you betcha…. Well deserved, too, after an outburst of more than 5000 words! See y’all tomorrow, if I’m not in jail for blowing up a Kaiser facility…. I guess I’ll stick to metaphorically blowing up some Kaiser employees, strictly for medicinal purposes, I assure you…. Ta, then….

Y’all take care out there,
and May the Metaphorse be with you;
Blessed Be, dearest Carole, Mark,Theresa, & Richy
and everyone else, too…

When I works, I works hard.
When I sits, I sits loose.
When I thinks, I falls asleep.

Which is Why….

Sometimes I sits and thinks,

I just sits.
