commitee

Congressional committee in conference….

By modern standards, & probably precise definition, I am what most would label as a ‘pagan’, as one who does not subscribe to any of the major, or even lesser, of the world’s religions. Thomas Paine’s idea of his mind being his only church, and his inner nature his only moral guide, is closer to what I perceive to be right in reality. Too much of what the church’s try to make people believe never struck me as particularly believable, or likely to be the true nature of reality. I mostly covered that belief up with a thick shield, & tried not to discuss it much with anyone, as it never seemed to have good results. So, this holiday season can be a bit problematic for me, what with the rest of my species, or most of it, engaged in a frenzy of capitalist consumerism, which they’ve all come to believe expresses the “Christmas spirit”… SIGH. Silly monkeys….

Having said this, I find myself, as is common during this season, alone with my cat, wondering if having different thoughts, and believing differently, is a worthwhile pastime. Then I consider all I see happening in today’s world, and am content to be myself. Knowing that, if no one else knows, the Buddha has my back on this; the whole of the religious world, & all religions, tell us that peace and happiness resides outside ourselves, in the knowledge of God, by whatever name each decides he must be called. In that light, I can only be glad I know that to be untrue, & unnecessary, for all of it, God, peace, and happiness, are already right there inside us, only waiting to be recognized to be made available to us…..

So, today, on Christianity’s stolen pagan holiday, I offer the following entertainment; some of the best rock & roll ever heard, from about 35 years ago, one of my older poems, and some fine pearls to ponder, along with my, shall we say, extemporaneous remarks. Hell, my kids are grown, & I had nothing better to do, so, there you go…. Let’s do this the easy way, like this….

Shall we Pearl?

Demon’s Bane

Endless nights lead inexorably into endless days
while the battle for peace rages.
Lost arts find new meaning used in new ways;
to burn, yearn, and turn all the new pages.

Darkness falls heavily on bowed shoulders, contrite;
fireworks travel fast in nervous tissue.
The pace is kept, clean, but, never erudite;
such a pale tale of ancient issue.

Peering in terror down long, long halls of night
brings only confusion, destitute in sorrow.
Cannot time become our enemy, eager to fight
on the side which may never see tomorrow?

The longing gaze of passion, for reason to live,
must fall ever more faithfully into sedition,
else the clinging visions we claim to give,
shall not prevent reaching inevitable perdition.

Rising up, clarity of purpose shines the light of day
upon such a desolate landscape of absent release.
There is no escape, no furthering of the way.
Time never knows how to grant peace.

Winter in California….

Hajime…. Surrealistically speaking, that dog was never near the manger, nor in the vestibule. Of course, all the available evidence speaks only to the extant paradigms, like spice on rice. For most, that will be enough; for others, such as us, ’twill be only a metaphor….

I would say, for my first effort in weeks, if not months, that’s not too shabby. Whether it means anything, or not, is, I should think, a moot point (which is often the only kind we find. More spice on rice, I suppose….) For what is needed today, it will obviously suffice, if it already hasn’t done so. If y’all are saying to yourselves, “what the fuck is he babbling on about?”, I have fulfilled my vow; if you made any sense of any of it, I can officially begin to worry if I haven’t gone too far. But, far be it from me to ever question, or challenge, the total value of pure, unadulterated nonsense, or, as we like to call, real deal BS….

If anyone is also wondering if I’m ever going to pull this together into what might pass for an intro section, well, I guess you’ll just have to keep wondering, because, hey, this is too much fun. A bit tiring, and not at all easy, (you try typing in fast, short bursts, punctuated by howling and cursing…), but, altogether worthwhile, if only to soothe my angst. Not that doing so is either efficient, or. for that matter, necessary, but, hey, it’s all good. I’m just playin’ around, & no animals will be harmed. In fact, the only other animal present seems to rather enjoy the show; she’s not growling at me, & that’s always a good sign….

Okay, that’s enough. I’ve got this pulled together as far as it will go, so, I suppose I’ll stop fooling around & get on with it. Fresh Pearls have been rather hard to come by, so, I’ll cease and desist, though I can’t claim to have had this much fun sitting down for weeks. To aid and abet the furthering of our new cause, I’ll employ my most ruthless technique for moving on, which, is a bit abrupt, but, relatively bloodless. Quick, too; watch!….

Taken by surprise, Psyche sits numb
Amidst tall phrases worn of elder time
Seeking a not-new place from which to come
No shiny new horizon, nor altered paradigm.

Sudden regrets shape dreams as times maintain
Shades of memories bring poignant clear sight
Visions of duty, each chosen wild campaign
Shouts echoing clamors to enfold the night.

Arisen from less than eternal havens of sleep
Facing moments created in torment and pain
Destiny weighs upon those chosen to keep
As the sparrow flies now to sever the twain.

Faded pathways lead away, hazy and long
Burned out verges, so long unknown
Images of yesterday, clear and strong
Bleed into today, though ’tis but my own……

leaving sf

SF Skyline framed by the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge….

Hajime…. Since making the decision not to post regularly, the Big Blue Room has continued to draw my attention much more frequently than the events taking place in cyberspace. On Saturday, I attended a play in which my grandson played two small parts. I attended with both my kids, as well as my son’s daughter & step-sister. Such family events have been few and far between for me/us, but, the fact we now are able to get together on occasion brings me a lot of satisfaction, to say the least.

I’ve also spent a lot of time walking, putting in about five miles one day, without collapsing into exhaustion; this is also a new, rare feeling, one I welcome in lieu of the lack of physical ability I’ve ‘enjoyed’ for much too long. All in all, I have to say I’m enjoying my time back in Reality more than I thought would be the case, given the state of that frame of existence. Oh, there is plenty out there at which to rage; the continual reminders of homelessness in society, the lack of community feeling fostered by our divisive leaders, the rampant capitalism which most of society tends to ignore, in favor of chasing the shiny, insubstantial dreams offered for their distraction from how much they are being manipulated. Hell, just watching any major sport on TV can stimulate my ranting button, when I think of all the wasted time & money which could be put to use to aid those in need, rather than making the rich richer.

But, mostly, I have been enjoying the blue skies, the rain, the clouds, and the still-extant panorama of life on this planet, all of which helps me to connect with what is real, rather than what is due to humanity’s imagination, and their insistence on forcing reality into the shape they desire. In some way, all of what I now perceive is bringing me closer to clarity, in my thinking, and in my actions. Sadly, I still do not find very many people who can appreciate my thoughts about reality; most of the folks I meet out in the BBR are too focused on the shiny distractions of life, and completely miss the stuff going on that is actually real, and, in my view, much more important than ANYTHING they see on a TV, or their phone, or, on a computer. If I were still giving in to the urge to rant, I’d find no lack of issues about which to do so.

I suppose one could call all the above a paean to Life as I now see it; it seems more important to me to find clarity, and the realness of life, than to engage in any of the nonsensical pastimes society fosters upon us in its paroxysms of insanity. The leaders of this world’s political/religious oriented culture are, in my estimation, ALL verifiably insane…. sociopathic narcissists, mostly, though in certain cases, massive ignorance and bigotry mark them as just plain assholes, akin to what many would call ignorant rednecks. We’ve got one of those in this country, right in the White House; I guess that’s why all the 50 million other ignorant redneck assholes who reside here are in such a dither of entitlement, & busily spreading their particular brand of selfish bigotry as far & wide as they can…

Wow. I think I just spewed out a rant, didn’t I? Ah, well, old habits die hard, I guess. To make up for it, let’s go see what else I’ve thrown together for today’s offering, shall we? I think, given how easily all that vitriol spewed out, it would be a good idea, lest I fall right back into where I no longer wish to go. Instead, let’s make use of this old #4 I found lying here, & get on with the rest of today’s mess. It works just like this….

Raging at Aging

As old as you feel, we are told, is old as you are,
custom assures such vision will carry us far.
Reality begs to differ, may it be so bold
it is really quite painful, and very, very cold.

The power and strength felt in our halcyon youth
desert us with age, yet another unwelcome truth.
Irony rules our time here on this bountiful earth
as we reflect the changes over time since our birth.

As physical powers fade from this fragile shell,
we learn our mind can serve us quite as well.
The strength that once filled our bones and hearts
is now applied by our will, to more arcane arts.

Life’s greatest gift is our freedom of choice
no matter how often we forget, we still get a voice.
Energy, or apathy, by our will we may choose,
failing to do so, our only way to lose.

Each of us lives in the grip of time and space,
always seeking our balance, our own chosen place.
One must accept reality, for it is true at the core,
all we can do, is all we can do, and nothing more.

Hajime…. Yesterday, this sleepy little seaside town saw 103º F, which lasted through the night; it was still 85º at 10:00 pm. It’s 0630 now, & already pushing 80º, with a high predicted to reach 105º. But, climate change is just a myth, so, nothing to see here, move along. To watch people try to deal with such temps would be amusing, if it weren’t so pathetic, and, for many of society’s less capable or challenged individuals, dangerous to their health & well-being. Like Bert Russell once noted, sometimes one must be moved to a bottomless well of pity for the suffering of mankind…. I would share his sentiment, if it were not so clearly their own damn fault most of the time.

But, it’s too damn hot, and early, to rant; moreover, I really don’t want to do so very much, not any more. What’s the point, when virtually nobody listens, or makes any attempt to change their lives, or the way they approach it, which is, almost always, the root cause of all their suffering? Oh, well, I suppose some folks enjoy drama in their lives, though I can’t claim to understand why. I guess, when one suffers from a sense of helplessness and confusion, drama seems like a way to feel something other than dread and despair. SIGH…. Silly humans….

Rather than continue in such a fruitless vein, let’s do something else. Since I have most of this done, I suggest we move on down the page, listen to a bit of music, enjoy today’s poem choice, & some fine, if relatively obscure pearls of virtual wisdom, strung together on a common thread, together becoming greater than the sum of parts. Plus, if nothing else, it will serve to distract me from the ridiculous heat we’re experiencing around here, long enough to run a cool bath…. See y’all down the line….

Today’s poem is for those living in the greater Pacific Northwest, who, with me, are suffering the heat; it’s a winter poem, & may provide a bit of cooling distraction, if only for the time it takes to read and consider…. Enjoy!….

A Seasonal Approach

Absolute stillness grips a frozen field,
anticipating dawn with such patient yield
morning burgeoning in dark winter’s hold
brings promise of tales yet to be told.

Lengthening days of pale sun unto night
slowly tell of time’s subversive flight
bringing such original songs of natural fire
with melodies complex in casual attire.

The months are certain they will always win
it is just the way it has always been.
None may argue, nor yet slow life down
Nor dim the eternal beauty of nature’s gown.

Winter evolves from fall into spring,
sending flocks and hearts ever awing.
Summer follows suit, t’other way ’round
Spring into fall, often without a sound.

Life is meant to be lived, beginning to end
choices abound, and change can be a friend.
Yielding with grace to reality’s compelling ploy
fills our plain existence with clean, honest joy.

Destructive impulses on permanent display….

Ffolkes,

“Everything has been figured out, except how to live.”

~~ Jean-Paul Sartre ~~

Poised for flight….

Hajime…. As is my habit, to begin this Pearl, I arise, stumble through my routine morning activities until some clarity settles, then turn to this introduction, as the first creative moments of the day. Generally, I don’t begin until I know the rest of the mess is ready to go; I’ve found this to be the most efficient method for the posting process, as well as providing the impetus, and opportunity, for some kind of imaginative opening. As a rule, though, I sit to begin, whereupon I encounter a huge blank space occupying most of my mind, as it casts about, almost in desperation, seeking inspiration, or, a note from the Muse, at minimum… Most days, I end up tricking myself, and y’all, in the search for quality and clarity….

Today, I have no dearth of material from which to choose; spending two days putting this together, in moments of pertinent capability (i.e, when I could sit long enough), afforded a number of instances pointed sufficiently to provide me with things I can use to open with. Naturally, reality intruded, as soon as I booted up, & drove all that saved material into oblivion. Instead, I’ve been dealing with a failed communication, with concomitant emotional overtones, as well as an uncommonly intrusive cat, to go along with the usual angst that formulates around this process, and the vicissitudes of life at large.

As can be seen by now, I’ve managed to get it all in order, in my head, if not in reality, enough to begin blathering, examining the morning in minute detail, to give me, if nothing else, a bit of space to decide what direction is best to lead into what I’ve prepared for today. I’ll get right to that, as it is patently clear, if I don’t, we’ll never get anywhere, In fact, lets abandon all attempts to disguise what is taking place as either willful, or, rationally intact, & just go for it. Hang on, it requires a sharp turn, here….

Shall we Pearl?….

“As men, we are all equal in the presence of death.”

Today’s music is a bit different than usual. The piece embedded here is the one I want y’all to hear first. I’ll only say, I wept, in joy, as I listened to it. For more music from Duane, use the button on the YT player which allows you to watch it on You Tube, where you will find as much of Duane’s work as you could wish for, much of which is just as fine as this….

When I mentioned to a friend I had wept in joy when listening to this, I was accused of sentimentality, as well as seeking solace in the past… Without knowing the answer, I would guess my friend does NOT play an instrument, for, my weeping was not a sentimental reaction to the song (Amazing Grace), but, rather, sheer unadulterated joy, generated by hearing the ‘music of the spheres’, knowing full well the artist playing the song was deeply immersed in that sphere, allowing the universe to flow through him, thus, essentially, playing in an unconscious state….. while playing, he WAS the music. Having felt that, though never with such force as his talent makes available to him, while jamming along with friends on the guitar, I can attest, nothing in Life brings us closer to the truth of our own existence as connecting to that universal sphere of joy, which hurts as much as it uplifts…..

All that being said, please, let if flow, and, enjoy!….

I have related how I spent a year, or more, in the Hell of withdrawal and cleansing of opioids from my body; this poem came pouring out in the period nearing the end, as I had begun to emerge from the haze of chemical oblivion into reality’s often as harsh, but, cleaner light. I’m rather fond of it, just for that…. Watch the metaphors; they’ll cut ya…

Increments

Meaning fades to distant reality
while gazing at such triviality.
An insane world, where utter finality
is reward for disability.

Metaphorically, as a matter of course.

Moment to moment, passion blooms,
swells, and fades, swept by new brooms.
Bitter dreams catch fire in empty rooms,
waiting for broken time, which never resumes.

Superficially, with great force.

Dire wolves stand snarling at the door
called to existence from a distant moor;
discordant strains sound a mad, sad roar,
a dirge for those who went before.

Morbidly, without vital recourse.

Honest effort fades from human ken
until entropy finds home in every when.
Illusory fear inundates imagination, then
buries hope, in its own ashes, hidden.

Cruelly, absolutely no remorse.

Silence falls until it shatters the night.
The universe has refused the fight.
Illusion is now reality, such a fey sight.
Who has courage to live in the light?

Really? It could be worse.

The universe, in all its majestic indifference, still, will, occasionally, provide us with exactly what we need to accept, and embrace reality’s demands… In today’s instance, I was given some moments of peace and serenity, by being required to provide cuddle time for Leelu, who chose the moment I finished the intro to activate the “Cuddle Clause” in our contract, which we signed the day she arrived…. That clause gives her the right to come to me at any random moment, whereupon I am to modify my structure to that of a ‘cat hammock’, & hold her, pet her, & strengthen the bond we share for enough time for both of us to arrive at a peaceful inner state…. Today, that took about 25 minutes, making me late, and unconcerned to be so….

For today’s Pearl, it just means it gets posted a bit late. So be it. It’s done, & so am I, for the day. While it is still cool out in the BBR, I’m going for a long walk, maybe even a ferry ride… who knows? It’s a wide world, & I am still part of it…. Tell you what…. Let’s all go out in the BBR today, & see what there is to see…. See ya, as soon as the mud settles, & all becomes clear… Maybe that will be tomorrow; then, again, maybe not…. Be sure, I shall return, if only to dump more angst into the well of humanity’s regard, where it can join all the other stuff nobody really cares much about, but for those who place it there…. Hmm… a bit esoteric for a closer, but, ’twill have to do…. Ta, then….

sf goodbye

Typical foggy/hazy day in SF….

Hajime…. For two days now, I’ve been engaged in pursuing my lifelong quest for truth; unfortunately, my search often leads me to places where, not only have I previously been there, but, left for good reason, even if those places were deep in my own soul. In truth, it is becoming increasingly clear that the truth resides there, as it does for each of us, though our culture and its demands upon us tends to attempt to deny this simple truth. We all have a tendency to play fast and loose with our connection to what is real, believing, deep in our innermost ego, we can alter Reality itself by the power of our imagination.

Reality, of course, is not so inclined, which leaves us living, much of the time, in a state of conflict with the world around us, and, as a reflection of this tension, in conflict with ourselves. As might be surmised, this often leaves us in a confused state of mind, which is not the most efficacious method for dealing with what is real. In my own case, this has led me to a point in life where the motivation to continue to struggle becomes difficult to find, much less employ to any advantage. In short, I just can’t find it in me to give much of a crap about what is happening in the world; there just doesn’t seem to be any good reason to do so. As you might imagine, this is not a particularly comfortable, or comforting, state of mind in which to dwell….

Over the past two days, since falling into the well of depression, I’ve managed to cobble together the elements of a Pearl for today; if I can continue a bit longer, I’ll even manage to post it. I’ve done this, not for any logical or identifiable reason, but, simply because, for my own sanity, it’s what I do. This is how I organize & codify my thoughts, and carry out the process of evaluating my thoughts in the light of reality; the process helps me to stay in a relatively stable frame of mind. Without it, I get even more depressed; expression of what we feel is critical for us humans. We get blocked up, mentally, when we try to shut ourselves off from such expression. So, I write, not to share, but, to vent….

Now I’ve shared my inner conflict, to little advantage, I’m sure, I’m going to go post this, knowing full well it won’t mean anything much to anyone but me. I can’t seem to get on with any other business until I do, so, that’s what I’m gonna do. So be it. There will be no tricks, no ups, & no extras today; all there is are these pearls, and my own sense of angst, set free….. Let’s quit fooling around, then, shall we, & get on with it….

Shall we Pearl?

Banishing demons….

Endless nights lead inexorably into endless days
while the battle for peace rages.
Lost arts find new meaning used in new ways;
to burn, yearn, and turn all the new pages.

Darkness falls heavily on bowed shoulders, contrite;
fireworks travel fast in nervous tissue.
The pace is kept, clean, but, never erudite;
such a pale tale of ancient issue.

A Rose for Carole….

Hajime…. Well, it’s done. I’m not sure how I did it, but, since it is patently a gift horse, I won’t quibble. There’s some music, a decent poem, and a crusty old-school pearl, which together complete the required elements of a standard Pearl of Virtual Wisdom. Beyond their mere existence, and presence here in their correct slots, I make no claims; doing so could seriously affect not only any honor I might possess, but could easily destroy all the fragile equilibrium I have so recently attained. So, I won’t.

What I will do is demonstrate some compassion, by NOT bombarding y’all here in the intro with any of the usual supply of dross, or drivel, or even doggerel. Instead, I’ll note my feelings of relief and gratitude for the passing of the recent unpleasantness. The process of enduring the crap so ubiquitous during the election frenzy is exhausting, so, it’s a pleasant contrast to only have to listen to the moaning and groaning from all those who didn’t get what they wanted. Especially since having to listen is easily controlled, by switching off any TV’s, radios, or other venues that might regale me with such idiocy.

Yes, the election has made me grumpy, but, that’s nothing new, right? For now, let’s just get on with getting this mess done, and posted. To do that, we’ll have to get started, so, let’s just do that, right here, right now….

Where does it come from?

I’d stick out my thumb,

If only, should, would, could it be?
It went away again, this time free.
It will be back again, this I know;

I wish it wouldn’t do that here.

I’m running late, thanks to a small fur-bearing extortionist, and my own demons. No complaints, just a comment, made only because SB decided to be uncooperative. Here’s an old, old-school pearl from a while back that will fit the necessary bill neatly…. It’s a bit random, and silly to boot, but, what the hell….

From 1/11/2015:

I’m feeling a bit silly today, along with the normal (!!!…) degree of angst over the news; Smart Bee was sympathetic enough to find the perfect group of pearls with which to address both emotional states at once…. Go figure, eh? This one is both fun, and quite pointed, with some sharp thorns adorning the roses…. There were a lot of them, so, brace yourselves, and for goodness sake, put down your adult beverages so you don’t spew on the keyboard….

“I drank what?” — Socrates

“The avoidance of taxes is the only intellectual pursuit that still carries any reward.” — John Maynard Keynes

“We have had no good comic operas of late, because the real world has been more comic than any possible opera.” — G. K. Chesterton, The Quotable Chesterton

“Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.” — Hanlon’s Razor

“Good God,” said Arthur, “it looks just like the sea front at Southend.”
“I’m relieved to hear you say that,” said Ford.
“Why”
“Because I thought I must be going mad.”
“Perhaps you are. Perhaps you only thought I said it.”
Ford thought about this.
“Well, did you say it, or didn’t you?” he asked.
“I think so,” said Arthur.
“Well, perhaps we’re both going mad.”
“Yes,” said Arthur, “we’d be mad, all things considered, to think this was Southend.”
“Well, do you think this is Southend?”
“Oh, yes”
“So do I.”
“Therefore we must be mad.”
“Nice day for it.”
“Yes,” said a passing maniac.
“Who was that?” asked Arthur.
“Who–the man with the five heads and the elderberry bush full of kippers?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t know. Just someone.”
“Ah.”

— From The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

“It is an interesting question how far men would retain their relative rank if they were divested of their clothes.” — Henry David Thoreau

“If you ever reach total enlightenment while you’re drinking a beer, I bet it makes beer shoot out your nose.” — Deep Thoughts, by Jack Handey

“If a lawyer and an IRS agent were both drowning, and you could only save one of them, would you go to lunch or read the paper?” — Smart Bee

“When something irritates you, think of this: How else would we get pearls?” — Smart Bee

“For to err in opinion, though it be not the part of wise men, is at least human.” — Plutarch (46-120 AD) — Against Colotes

Finally, to finish off this nonsense, we move on to what good ol’ Socrates said, immediately after voicing his surprise, as related in the opening line of this pearl….

“Sure, everyone always said ‘Socrates what is the meaning of life?’ or’Socrates how can I find happiness?’…. Did anyone ever say ‘Socrates, hemlock is poison.’???????” — Socrates, minutes before death

********************************

I really haven’t a clue how this got done, but, since it is, I’ll go post it. I’ll even issue our standard warning/disclaimer, by letting you know, I’ll be back tomorrow, hopefully in a more rational state…. See ya, ffolkes….

Seeing is Conducive to Belief

Folly sits so comfortably upon my fevered brow
one would easily believe that I would know how
to look at Life with a jaded, weary eye
seeing enough, and more, to know Why.

Such seems the case, as I will it to be,
an open book of a face, it looks so like me;
what’s known to be so, needs no close attention
familiar sights require no minding, nor mention.

The eye is drawn at once to the stark and new,
and sent back to sleep by successful review.
Once we find evidence we feel we understand,
curiosity languishes, dismissed at command.

Ancient sages knew the insidious value of illusion,
preachers and pundits know the power of confusion.
Each pair of eyes contains its own point of reference,
each mind sets its own standards of preference.

Seeing is believing, for those who live in thrall,
accepting what is perceived is all they ever recall.
Unknown to them, reality follows another set of rules,
Deeper, more dangerous, and no place for fools.

A well-earned rest….

Hajime…. Apparently, the muse responsible for stimulating my creativity didn’t get the memo. I’m now capable of sitting long enough to do a bit of writing, but, can she be found? No. I’m pretty sure she got sidetracked by Murphy, who delights in seeing me experience frustration; he probably talked her into a week in Mexico, or somewhere else far away from wherever I’m sitting. Now, here I am, once again staring blankly at a screen covered in a vast white plain of fear, wondering what the hell I’m going to do now…..

Ah, well, so be it. I refuse categorically to go back to tricks, or traps, or nonsense, or even Piffle, to fill up this intro section; don’t ask me why. Not that I wouldn’t tell you, but, we’d be here forever trying to justify that which cannot be justified. But, then, reality doesn’t much care about justification; we humans are the only ones who seem to put any credence in it. But, I digress, as usual…

Screw it, he said, with feeling. Let’s just get on with it, since there isn’t a lot to get to. The poem I’m gestating isn’t ready, apparently, so, we’ll all have to make do with the handful of pearls I found, & be happy with that. Since there is now hope for more time to write, I’ll show a bit of faith in the process, (unnatural as it may be, for me), & hope for more in the near future… For now, let’s just do this….
