Neighborhood scoundrel at play….

Hajime…. Yesterday, this sleepy little seaside town saw 103º F, which lasted through the night; it was still 85º at 10:00 pm. It’s 0630 now, & already pushing 80º, with a high predicted to reach 105º. But, climate change is just a myth, so, nothing to see here, move along. To watch people try to deal with such temps would be amusing, if it weren’t so pathetic, and, for many of society’s less capable or challenged individuals, dangerous to their health & well-being. Like Bert Russell once noted, sometimes one must be moved to a bottomless well of pity for the suffering of mankind…. I would share his sentiment, if it were not so clearly their own damn fault most of the time.

But, it’s too damn hot, and early, to rant; moreover, I really don’t want to do so very much, not any more. What’s the point, when virtually nobody listens, or makes any attempt to change their lives, or the way they approach it, which is, almost always, the root cause of all their suffering? Oh, well, I suppose some folks enjoy drama in their lives, though I can’t claim to understand why. I guess, when one suffers from a sense of helplessness and confusion, drama seems like a way to feel something other than dread and despair. SIGH…. Silly humans….

Rather than continue in such a fruitless vein, let’s do something else. Since I have most of this done, I suggest we move on down the page, listen to a bit of music, enjoy today’s poem choice, & some fine, if relatively obscure pearls of virtual wisdom, strung together on a common thread, together becoming greater than the sum of parts. Plus, if nothing else, it will serve to distract me from the ridiculous heat we’re experiencing around here, long enough to run a cool bath…. See y’all down the line….

Shall we Pearl?….

Today’s poem is for those living in the greater Pacific Northwest, who, with me, are suffering the heat; it’s a winter poem, & may provide a bit of cooling distraction, if only for the time it takes to read and consider…. Enjoy!….

A Seasonal Approach

Absolute stillness grips a frozen field,
anticipating dawn with such patient yield
morning burgeoning in dark winter’s hold
brings promise of tales yet to be told.

Lengthening days of pale sun unto night
slowly tell of time’s subversive flight
bringing such original songs of natural fire
with melodies complex in casual attire.

The months are certain they will always win
it is just the way it has always been.
None may argue, nor yet slow life down
Nor dim the eternal beauty of nature’s gown.

Winter evolves from fall into spring,
sending flocks and hearts ever awing.
Summer follows suit, t’other way ’round
Spring into fall, often without a sound.

Life is meant to be lived, beginning to end
choices abound, and change can be a friend.
Yielding with grace to reality’s compelling ploy
fills our plain existence with clean, honest joy.

Hajime…. I’ve managed to cobble together a fairly decent Pearl, in only one day, so, I’ll post it, & hope for the best. My recent absences have, I think, caused some Gentle Readers to not come by very often…. SIGH. Oh, well; so be it. Since I do have this one ready, I guess I’ll post it right away. In order to do so in a timely fashion, I’ll even condescend to forgo all tricks, traps, sudden turns, or nonsensical forays into my head, opting instead to call this an intro, & be done with it. It’s actually one of my favorite openings, if only because I don’t have to come up with anything in particular, beyond what you already observe. Yep, I’m often lazy, but, then, I am human, aren’t I? Why, yes, yes I am. See y’all in the closing section….

No introduction needed today; the music I’ve chosen is of a genre everyone knows, as it is, perhaps, the single most ancient form of sharing music, other than by singing. Humans have played guitars, or an instrument like it, since the days we hung out in caves to stay dry during inclement weather. In my opinion, anyone who does NOT like classical guitar simply hasn’t learned how to be fully human…. Enjoy!….

It’s hot today, with chances of pain & rain.
So it says on the news.
Guess there’s nothing to do again
unless it’s sing the blues.

The blues are gettin’ old, though.
So I say, & I should know.
I been singin’ the bloody songs, y’know?
For what seems a long row to hoe.

S’pose it could get better someday.
I’ve heard that tune before.
Always seemed out of tune anyway;
I ain’t waitin’ any more.

Bang those drums & kick the cans.
May as well raise some hell.
Clang together some old pots & pans;
It hides the little voices so well.

Poised for flight….

Hajime…. As is my habit, to begin this Pearl, I arise, stumble through my routine morning activities until some clarity settles, then turn to this introduction, as the first creative moments of the day. Generally, I don’t begin until I know the rest of the mess is ready to go; I’ve found this to be the most efficient method for the posting process, as well as providing the impetus, and opportunity, for some kind of imaginative opening. As a rule, though, I sit to begin, whereupon I encounter a huge blank space occupying most of my mind, as it casts about, almost in desperation, seeking inspiration, or, a note from the Muse, at minimum… Most days, I end up tricking myself, and y’all, in the search for quality and clarity….

Today, I have no dearth of material from which to choose; spending two days putting this together, in moments of pertinent capability (i.e, when I could sit long enough), afforded a number of instances pointed sufficiently to provide me with things I can use to open with. Naturally, reality intruded, as soon as I booted up, & drove all that saved material into oblivion. Instead, I’ve been dealing with a failed communication, with concomitant emotional overtones, as well as an uncommonly intrusive cat, to go along with the usual angst that formulates around this process, and the vicissitudes of life at large.

As can be seen by now, I’ve managed to get it all in order, in my head, if not in reality, enough to begin blathering, examining the morning in minute detail, to give me, if nothing else, a bit of space to decide what direction is best to lead into what I’ve prepared for today. I’ll get right to that, as it is patently clear, if I don’t, we’ll never get anywhere, In fact, lets abandon all attempts to disguise what is taking place as either willful, or, rationally intact, & just go for it. Hang on, it requires a sharp turn, here….

Shall we Pearl?….

Today’s music is a bit different than usual. The piece embedded here is the one I want y’all to hear first. I’ll only say, I wept, in joy, as I listened to it. For more music from Duane, use the button on the YT player which allows you to watch it on You Tube, where you will find as much of Duane’s work as you could wish for, much of which is just as fine as this….

When I mentioned to a friend I had wept in joy when listening to this, I was accused of sentimentality, as well as seeking solace in the past… Without knowing the answer, I would guess my friend does NOT play an instrument, for, my weeping was not a sentimental reaction to the song (Amazing Grace), but, rather, sheer unadulterated joy, generated by hearing the ‘music of the spheres’, knowing full well the artist playing the song was deeply immersed in that sphere, allowing the universe to flow through him, thus, essentially, playing in an unconscious state….. while playing, he WAS the music. Having felt that, though never with such force as his talent makes available to him, while jamming along with friends on the guitar, I can attest, nothing in Life brings us closer to the truth of our own existence as connecting to that universal sphere of joy, which hurts as much as it uplifts…..

All that being said, please, let if flow, and, enjoy!….

Comedy_Tragedy

I have related how I spent a year, or more, in the Hell of withdrawal and cleansing of opioids from my body; this poem came pouring out in the period nearing the end, as I had begun to emerge from the haze of chemical oblivion into reality’s often as harsh, but, cleaner light. I’m rather fond of it, just for that…. Watch the metaphors; they’ll cut ya…

Increments

Meaning fades to distant reality
while gazing at such triviality.
An insane world, where utter finality
is reward for disability.

Metaphorically, as a matter of course.

Moment to moment, passion blooms,
swells, and fades, swept by new brooms.
Bitter dreams catch fire in empty rooms,
waiting for broken time, which never resumes.

Superficially, with great force.

Dire wolves stand snarling at the door
called to existence from a distant moor;
discordant strains sound a mad, sad roar,
a dirge for those who went before.

Morbidly, without vital recourse.

Honest effort fades from human ken
until entropy finds home in every when.
Illusory fear inundates imagination, then
buries hope, in its own ashes, hidden.

Cruelly, absolutely no remorse.

Silence falls until it shatters the night.
The universe has refused the fight.
Illusion is now reality, such a fey sight.
Who has courage to live in the light?

Really? It could be worse.

The universe, in all its majestic indifference, still, will, occasionally, provide us with exactly what we need to accept, and embrace reality’s demands… In today’s instance, I was given some moments of peace and serenity, by being required to provide cuddle time for Leelu, who chose the moment I finished the intro to activate the “Cuddle Clause” in our contract, which we signed the day she arrived…. That clause gives her the right to come to me at any random moment, whereupon I am to modify my structure to that of a ‘cat hammock’, & hold her, pet her, & strengthen the bond we share for enough time for both of us to arrive at a peaceful inner state…. Today, that took about 25 minutes, making me late, and unconcerned to be so….

For today’s Pearl, it just means it gets posted a bit late. So be it. It’s done, & so am I, for the day. While it is still cool out in the BBR, I’m going for a long walk, maybe even a ferry ride… who knows? It’s a wide world, & I am still part of it…. Tell you what…. Let’s all go out in the BBR today, & see what there is to see…. See ya, as soon as the mud settles, & all becomes clear… Maybe that will be tomorrow; then, again, maybe not…. Be sure, I shall return, if only to dump more angst into the well of humanity’s regard, where it can join all the other stuff nobody really cares much about, but for those who place it there…. Hmm… a bit esoteric for a closer, but, ’twill have to do…. Ta, then….

sf goodbye

Typical foggy/hazy day in SF….

Hajime…. For two days now, I’ve been engaged in pursuing my lifelong quest for truth; unfortunately, my search often leads me to places where, not only have I previously been there, but, left for good reason, even if those places were deep in my own soul. In truth, it is becoming increasingly clear that the truth resides there, as it does for each of us, though our culture and its demands upon us tends to attempt to deny this simple truth. We all have a tendency to play fast and loose with our connection to what is real, believing, deep in our innermost ego, we can alter Reality itself by the power of our imagination.

Reality, of course, is not so inclined, which leaves us living, much of the time, in a state of conflict with the world around us, and, as a reflection of this tension, in conflict with ourselves. As might be surmised, this often leaves us in a confused state of mind, which is not the most efficacious method for dealing with what is real. In my own case, this has led me to a point in life where the motivation to continue to struggle becomes difficult to find, much less employ to any advantage. In short, I just can’t find it in me to give much of a crap about what is happening in the world; there just doesn’t seem to be any good reason to do so. As you might imagine, this is not a particularly comfortable, or comforting, state of mind in which to dwell….

Over the past two days, since falling into the well of depression, I’ve managed to cobble together the elements of a Pearl for today; if I can continue a bit longer, I’ll even manage to post it. I’ve done this, not for any logical or identifiable reason, but, simply because, for my own sanity, it’s what I do. This is how I organize & codify my thoughts, and carry out the process of evaluating my thoughts in the light of reality; the process helps me to stay in a relatively stable frame of mind. Without it, I get even more depressed; expression of what we feel is critical for us humans. We get blocked up, mentally, when we try to shut ourselves off from such expression. So, I write, not to share, but, to vent….

Now I’ve shared my inner conflict, to little advantage, I’m sure, I’m going to go post this, knowing full well it won’t mean anything much to anyone but me. I can’t seem to get on with any other business until I do, so, that’s what I’m gonna do. So be it. There will be no tricks, no ups, & no extras today; all there is are these pearls, and my own sense of angst, set free….. Let’s quit fooling around, then, shall we, & get on with it….

Shall we Pearl?

Banishing demons….

Endless nights lead inexorably into endless days
while the battle for peace rages.
Lost arts find new meaning used in new ways;
to burn, yearn, and turn all the new pages.

Darkness falls heavily on bowed shoulders, contrite;
fireworks travel fast in nervous tissue.
The pace is kept, clean, but, never erudite;
such a pale tale of ancient issue.

Peering in terror down long, long halls of night
brings only confusion, destitute in sorrow.
Cannot time become our enemy, eager to fight
on the side which may never see tomorrow?

The longing gaze of passion, for reason to live,
must fall ever more faithfully into sedition,
else the clinging visions we claim to give,
shall not prevent reaching inevitable perdition.

Rising up, clarity of purpose shines the light of day
upon such a desolate landscape of absent release.
There is no escape, no furthering of the way.
Time never knows how to grant peace.

A Rose for Carole….

Hajime…. Well, it’s done. I’m not sure how I did it, but, since it is patently a gift horse, I won’t quibble. There’s some music, a decent poem, and a crusty old-school pearl, which together complete the required elements of a standard Pearl of Virtual Wisdom. Beyond their mere existence, and presence here in their correct slots, I make no claims; doing so could seriously affect not only any honor I might possess, but could easily destroy all the fragile equilibrium I have so recently attained. So, I won’t.

What I will do is demonstrate some compassion, by NOT bombarding y’all here in the intro with any of the usual supply of dross, or drivel, or even doggerel. Instead, I’ll note my feelings of relief and gratitude for the passing of the recent unpleasantness. The process of enduring the crap so ubiquitous during the election frenzy is exhausting, so, it’s a pleasant contrast to only have to listen to the moaning and groaning from all those who didn’t get what they wanted. Especially since having to listen is easily controlled, by switching off any TV’s, radios, or other venues that might regale me with such idiocy.

Yes, the election has made me grumpy, but, that’s nothing new, right? For now, let’s just get on with getting this mess done, and posted. To do that, we’ll have to get started, so, let’s just do that, right here, right now….

I’m running late, thanks to a small fur-bearing extortionist, and my own demons. No complaints, just a comment, made only because SB decided to be uncooperative. Here’s an old, old-school pearl from a while back that will fit the necessary bill neatly…. It’s a bit random, and silly to boot, but, what the hell….

From 1/11/2015:

I’m feeling a bit silly today, along with the normal (!!!…) degree of angst over the news; Smart Bee was sympathetic enough to find the perfect group of pearls with which to address both emotional states at once…. Go figure, eh? This one is both fun, and quite pointed, with some sharp thorns adorning the roses…. There were a lot of them, so, brace yourselves, and for goodness sake, put down your adult beverages so you don’t spew on the keyboard….

“Good God,” said Arthur, “it looks just like the sea front at Southend.”
“I’m relieved to hear you say that,” said Ford.
“Why”
“Because I thought I must be going mad.”
“Perhaps you are. Perhaps you only thought I said it.”
Ford thought about this.
“Well, did you say it, or didn’t you?” he asked.
“I think so,” said Arthur.
“Well, perhaps we’re both going mad.”
“Yes,” said Arthur, “we’d be mad, all things considered, to think this was Southend.”
“Well, do you think this is Southend?”
“Oh, yes”
“So do I.”
“Therefore we must be mad.”
“Nice day for it.”
“Yes,” said a passing maniac.
“Who was that?” asked Arthur.
“Who–the man with the five heads and the elderberry bush full of kippers?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t know. Just someone.”
“Ah.”

No, there really isn’t. The physical issue related yesterday is such that it leaves me with no energy for anything beyond the minimum activities of daily living. To keep this from turning into a complaint session rather than an intro, we’re going to assume our ruthless mask, to ensure we get this done. It’s going to require some rather extensive ruthlessness, too, so, we’d best get started on that. We will begin, by beginning, now….

A friend tweeted a song to me and others yesterday; ’twas Arlo Guthrie singing “City of New Orleans”, a song written by this man, an iconic songwriter who died in 1984…. I found a concert of his on You Tube, which has poor video, but, great sound, showing off his great voice, and excellent guitar skills… His songs have been covered by the best musicians, in a number of venues, simply because they’re so good…. Seeing is Conducive to Belief

Folly sits so comfortably upon my fevered brow
one would easily believe that I would know how
to look at Life with a jaded, weary eye
seeing enough, and more, to know Why.

Such seems the case, as I will it to be,
an open book of a face, it looks so like me;
what’s known to be so, needs no close attention
familiar sights require no minding, nor mention.

The eye is drawn at once to the stark and new,
and sent back to sleep by successful review.
Once we find evidence we feel we understand,
curiosity languishes, dismissed at command.

Ancient sages knew the insidious value of illusion,
preachers and pundits know the power of confusion.
Each pair of eyes contains its own point of reference,
each mind sets its own standards of preference.

Seeing is believing, for those who live in thrall,
accepting what is perceived is all they ever recall.
Unknown to them, reality follows another set of rules,
Deeper, more dangerous, and no place for fools.

resting

A well-earned rest….

Hajime…. Apparently, the muse responsible for stimulating my creativity didn’t get the memo. I’m now capable of sitting long enough to do a bit of writing, but, can she be found? No. I’m pretty sure she got sidetracked by Murphy, who delights in seeing me experience frustration; he probably talked her into a week in Mexico, or somewhere else far away from wherever I’m sitting. Now, here I am, once again staring blankly at a screen covered in a vast white plain of fear, wondering what the hell I’m going to do now…..

Ah, well, so be it. I refuse categorically to go back to tricks, or traps, or nonsense, or even Piffle, to fill up this intro section; don’t ask me why. Not that I wouldn’t tell you, but, we’d be here forever trying to justify that which cannot be justified. But, then, reality doesn’t much care about justification; we humans are the only ones who seem to put any credence in it. But, I digress, as usual…

Screw it, he said, with feeling. Let’s just get on with it, since there isn’t a lot to get to. The poem I’m gestating isn’t ready, apparently, so, we’ll all have to make do with the handful of pearls I found, & be happy with that. Since there is now hope for more time to write, I’ll show a bit of faith in the process, (unnatural as it may be, for me), & hope for more in the near future… For now, let’s just do this….

Shall we pearl?….

Hajime…. Had I known yesterday, when beginning to put this Pearl together, that the intro would end up being the most contentious section to get done, I would have done it first. Since I’m doing it last, so to speak, it seems to have taken it personally, now refusing to coalesce into anything worth putting on screen, This isn’t to say we haven’t encountered this issue previously, though it’s not a frequent problem at all. No, the empty mind is our biggest issue in this section, as it usually occurs pre-coffee, or, nearly so. Since I’m about to go pour my second cup, that isn’t a factor…. Yet, here it sits, ugly, and relatively empty, save for this single paragraph of almost pure blather.

I wonder if they give refunds…. Nah, probably not, since nobody’s paying, and posting is free. Oh, well, another opportunity lost through lack of any comparatively sane thought processes as needed for basic comprehension. As we’re fond of saying around here in such situations, c’est la fucking vie. We’re going on in spite of our complete lack of talent, or intent, or even coherence. Of course, we could employ one of the Tardis toys to distract and discombobulate, (what a fine word!….), but, we’re not IN the Tardis yet. I suppose I could quit fooling around with this, and get on with it, but, what fun would that be?….

Oh…. okay. Well, since that’s the case, there’s nothing left to but this…..

Shall we Pearl?….

About Hopi Indian Symbols

The rant for this section turned epic on me; it’s not quite done yet. To take it’s place, here is a discussion from 2012, on one of our most frequent subjects, to wit, politicians, the BRC, and Asininnies in general. It’s a bit long, but, there’s some humor involved, so, it won’t hurt too bad. I find it ironic to note how relevant many of the old rants I wrote have remained over time… I guess it goes to show we humans are a bit slower learners than we’d like to believe…. Enjoy!…..

From 10/2/2012:

This old-school pearl started off in one direction, then veered off into another…. and I don’t blame it a bit. I’m just as tired of all the political bullshit being flung around as the next guy, and the election can’t get here quick enough to suit me, that’s for sure. What with the amount of crap flying around, I feel like I’ve got to shower it off at least once or twice a day……

Any who, I was collecting the pearls for this, when I noticed that each one of them, from the first to the last, make a pointed statement that could easily be applied to this election, and most specifically, to the Republican party’s platform and candidates…. As far as I can see, they fail at every one of these, and this then becomes an indictment of their failings, all without intent, but with great accuracy….

“The majority never has the right on its side. Never, I say! That is one of the social lies that a free, thinking man is bound to rebel against. Who makes up the majority in any given country? Is it the wise men or the fools? I think we must agree that the fools are in a terrible overwhelming majority, all the wide world over.” — Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906)

“The honest poor can sometimes forget poverty. The honest rich can never forget it.” — G. K. Chesterton (gigoid sez: There being none of those, to wit: honest rich, in this election, we can pretty much take this as gospel, or at least accept it at face value……)

“It is the edge and temper of the blade that make a good sword, not the richness of the scabbard; and so it is not money or possessions that make man considerable, but his virtue.” — Seneca (B.C. 3-65 A.D.) (gigoid sez: This could NOT be clearer…. since Mitt the Twitt feels compelled to rattle his scabbard at every opportunity…..)

“I am different from Washington; I have a higher, grander standard of principle. Washington could not lie.  I can lie, but I won’t.” — Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens)   (gigoid sez: In modern times, the concept of a politician lying is not merely common, it is expected, and, sadly to say, empowered by the voting public, by their passive acceptance of same….)

“It is discouraging how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit.” — Noel Coward

“Intemperate speech is a distinctive characteristic of man. Hotheads blow off and release destructive energy in the process. They shout and rave, exaggerating weaknesses, magnifying error, viewing with alarm. So it has been from the beginning; and so it will be throughout time. The framers of the constitution knew human nature as well as we do. They too had lived in dangerous days; they too knew the suffocating influence of orthodoxy and standardized thought. They weighed the compulsions for the restrained speech and thought against the abuses of liberty. They chose liberty.” — Justice William O. Douglas

“When they took the fourth amendment, I was silent because I don’t deal drugs.  When they took the sixth amendment, I kept quiet because I know I’m innocent.  When they took the second amendment, I said nothing because I don’t own a gun.  Now they’ve come for the first amendment, and I can’t say anything at all.” — Tim Freeman

“It is not the oath that makes us believe the man, but the man the oath.” — Aeschylus (525-456 BC) — Frag. 385

Yep, it’s going to be a real dust-up this year, as the forces of evil have gathered all of their minions and myrmidons, ready to sally forth on election day and try to lie and cheat their way into office. The degree of illegal, ill-advised voter suppression efforts that the Republicans have made are coming to light on a daily basis, with the money they’ve paid to companies dedicated to blocking the votes of seniors, poor people, and veterans being exposed as well. It’s truly a disgusting development, although it isn’t new to them; they’ve managed to steal two elections already, for the junior shrub, in 2000 and 2004, once in Florida, and once in Ohio.

They also managed to distract the public away from looking at those election results, by talking a bunch of Islamic militants into attacking New York City, right at the time when the Shrub’s chicanery in Florida was about to be investigated by an independent commission…… I always thought the timing there was a bit suspicious, and it couldn’t have been better for the Shrub, even though he probably wasn’t in on the planning of it himself…. his daddy never trusted him THAT far…..

But, you may remember, the senior Shrub was the head of the CIA for many years, before he was President, and is considered by most to be  personally responsible for the establishment of the cocaine trade in this country; see the book “The Cocaine Papers” written in the 1980’s, if there are still copies around. There may not be; I’m sure the dark-side operatives snap them up for destruction whenever they come across one…. This man would suffer no ethical restraints, and would not even hesitate, to have some of his operatives clandestinely trick terrorists into attacking when and where he wished it…. Civilian casualties are always more compelling when trying to distract the public…. And, it is funny how nobody ever investigated where the money for the 9/11 attacks came from…. Usually, in any such event, finding out who paid for it is a primary goal of the investigating teams…. but, nobody ever did that for 9/11…. Kind of makes one wonder, doesn’t it?……

Ah well, conspiracy theories aside, this election is seeing every dirty trick the two parties can think of between them, with the most egregiously immoral actions taking place on the conservative side…. voter suppression efforts in swing states, outright lying, misinformation spreading, magical bean platforms, all are being employed with gusto…. The upcoming debate tomorrow promises to be quite a show for the American public, and it will be interesting to see the contortions that the Republicans go through to try to show their man to their advantage, when every time he opens his mouth, he drops another bomb that indicates just how clueless and uncaring he is…. I’m almost looking forward to it, if it didn’t promise to be so bloody…. c’est la vie, I guess, and we’ll have to see how time will tell the tale…..

While researching yesterday in SB, I came across this, which I remember hearing live, watching TV with my kids & family, many years ago, on a show called The Muppet Show, in which characters from Sesame Street performed with live actors & artists, as well as performing solo, as Kermit did once in a while; generally, he, or another, or, occasionally all the Muppets on the show also did a duet with the live guest. I like this one, a lot, which is why it graces our poetry section today…. Enjoy, ffolkes; it’s a bit soft compared to our usual fare, but, hey, as noted, I like it, so, deal….

Rainbow Connection

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
and what’s on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions
rainbows have nothing to hide.

So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it
I know they’re wrong, wait and see.
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
when wished on the morning star?
Somebody thoughta’ that and someone believed it
 — look what it’s done so far.

What’s so amazing that keeps us stargazing
and what do we think we might see?
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me.

All of us under its spell
we know that it’s probably magic.
Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices?
I hear them calling my name.

Could it be the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice may be one and the same.
Well I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it
it’s somethin’ that I’m s’posed to be.

And someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and me.

This, ffolkes, is an odd pearl. For me to say that is, well, unprecedented, if only in its stark simplicity. It’s also quite cogent, in its own weird way, for it wanders around quite drunkenly, almost randomly, yet, still manages to fulfill whatever it is trying to say. The exact nature of that is, of course, left as an exercise for the Gentle Reader, though, as always, you may decline the mission. It will, however, at least partially, probably end up on the Quiz….Ya never know what ya might need to know…. Pay attention, now; some of it is tricky…. Hajime…. Oh, what the….? Ah, okay. It’s fine; never mind. Good morrow, ffolkes. And, how are y’all this fine morning. Bet you never thought you’d hear me say that one, did ya? Nor did I, he said, with a crooked grin. Nor did I necessarily mean for such adjective to direct or determine the course of your day, which is, as ever, completely up to you. Me I get tired, very tired, of hearing “Have a nice day!”. and have taken to replying, “Not today, thanks. Got other plans….” It does generally discourage conversation beyond that point, but, hey, I was on my way out, anyway, right?….

Isn’t Leelu cute? I think so, and I’m pretty familiar with cute, having raised a daughter, as well as lived with cats, kittens, dogs, frogs, snakes, and other forms of domesticated and semi-domesticated livestock for my entire life. We had a dog when I was born; another dog taught me to walk. We had goats, parakeets, fish…. If it wasn’t overtly dangerous, I’ve been around them pretty much the whole road I’ve traveled, one way or another. However, none of that is either relevant to the current task at hand, nor, probably, of particular interest to most folks, and even most ffolkes. (I’ll explain that some day, for those who don’t know why I label people in such a manner…. Maybe. Then, again, maybe not. Probably, I’ll forget.)

Okay, where was I? Oh, animals. Or, more prudently, not. Perhaps, at this point, it would be best to go on to another intro-appropriate attempt; the above seems to be a bit, shall we say, off-topic, if not completely non-sequitor? Whatever the hell it is/was, we’re not there anymore, we’re here, fortunately, so, we can, should we choose to accept the mission, hare off in some other idiotic direction. Alternately, we could calmly, and with some dignity, hare off in some other ridiculous direction. Or, I could just stop, and we’ll get on with the rest of today’s mess…. Yes, I think that’s the best idea.

Now, if only we can figure out…. Wait. I know. We’ll do it this way…. Watch close, it’s tricky…. No, no, not for me, for you…. Watch….

Shall we Pearl?….

Plato-Aristotle

I’m running late, and Leelu wants her time, so, I’m forgoing the rant I had planned to write, using the statement below from Hemingway. Instead, here is the intro section from a Pearl posted about two years ago, which is one of the best I’ve done, both rant, and intro-wise…. I hope you enjoy it, and, of course, treat it with mindfulness for its content….

“Cowardice … is almost always simply a lack of ability to suspend the functioning of the imagination.” — Ernest Hemingway

From 2/25/2014:

Terrible things could happen now…. they could, you know. And, we’ll deserve every second we experience of mind-numbing, soul-chilling, petrifying terror, because, hey, we’re the ones who left the door wide open, inviting it to enter our domain, bringing with it our ultimate doom…. Yes, it’s our own damn fault, and we will know the truth of the matter, because we have been warned, having previously been given wisdom such as this….

“The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.” — Albert Einstein

This is not new wisdom, that we’ve never before seen or suspected; history has provided us with innumerable instances proving the truth of this aphorism….. Time after time throughout our short span of existence on this world, we find examples of men or women who had prior knowledge of an issue, and, by their silence, allowed it to take place, to the detriment of all…. It doesn’t make it right, but, it is certainly not an uncommon issue for mankind…. Such issues are not, perhaps, of those we are given by Reality, our favorite gifts, …. In fact, many don’t look on this, or any knowledge, as gifts, and THAT is a big part of the entire problem….

Our problem is a failure of spirit, that has to do with a basic virtue, one that has been claimed as the basis for all other virtues; without this characteristic, none of our finer qualities are ever seen in the light of day…. That pillar upon which all other virtue rests, then, is Courage…. Yes, plain and simple, courage….

I have found, in my fairly long life, that most of mankind, I’m afraid, are cowards…. I’m not an exception, though it IS something I’ve tried hard to mitigate…. Fear is a hard thing for most of us to admit, even though it isn’t considered abnormal; it’s strength, and the way it causes us to lose control frightens us… However, that is also its saving grace, as the guilt one feels, for having given in to it, can, and does, stimulate us to greater effort, whereupon we can find that courage within ourselves, the next time we are in danger of giving in…. This is how almost everything we do, and have done, of an ethical nature, ever gets done…. because someone discovers they DO have the courage to act when there is danger to themselves, or to those for whom they care…..

That is what it takes, you see…. No virtuous act can ever take place, unless good people have the courage to act in the face of the Evil that exists, in spite of the fear they feel in the presence of that Evil. If they don’t summon, or find somewhere with themselves, the courage to act ethically, or morally, if that is needed, then Evil has free rein to let itself out to play in human affairs, to the detriment of us all….

Each of us has to find that courage within ourselves, the courage to put aside our fear, to carry on with what we know to be right, even though expediency and comfort are left behind in such cases…. Living with honor and integrity is never the easiest path we can take; it is always fraught with danger, because it doesn’t avoid evil, because it’s too hard, but, rather, confronts it, endeavoring to deal with it in a straightforward, upright fashion…. thus, preserving one’s own honor, when forced to have truck with what always leaves us feeling a bit dirty….

Now that we have wandered so far afield this morning, I’m not sure what will happen to this Pearl…. Minor ranting isn’t uncommon in the intro, but, I do try to limit it to no more than eight or ten paragraphs, so we don’t take forever to get into just the first section…. a resolution which, this morning, is NOT unfolding according to plan…. Allow me to sum up, and get on with it, if you will…

All of what I wrote above is true and complete, to the best of my knowledge, and constitutes a fairly accurate assessment of today’s situation here on planet Earth…. Evil is out there, and when we… that’s you, and me…. fail to stand up to it, look it in the eye, and tell it to “fuck off, you bloody sod!”, then it will continue to manifest its existence, causing untold pain and suffering for us all…. So, be brave, ffolkes, and don’t let Evil have its way without at least some token resistance, ‘kay?…. “Kay!…..

Shall we Pearl?…..

“Asked what he gained from philosophy, he answered, “To do without being commanded what others do from fear of the laws.”” — Diogenes Laertius (c. 200 AD) — Aristotle, xi

To finish off this section, here is the perfect pearl to go with the above….

Mad Dogs at Bay

Wicked, angry red scenes of imminent demise
haunt my dreams each night.
Fearful visions of destructive surprise
leave me sweating in terror, as well they might.

Small, mean, ugly, with beady little eyes,
pundits gather like maggots, bloated and vile,
grunting, snuffling, mumbling outlandish lies,
enslaving the ignorant with patience and guile.

Society’s denizens exist as volunteer slaves.
Living and dying by script, completely blind.
Never allowing any resentment, no making waves.
Never knowing joy, nor any peace of mind.

Free men will not be controlled, ’tis said;
No coercion, no illusion can cloud their sight.
No threats, no pain, no fear they dread;
their only duty to keep to the right.

Dreams are mere reflections of our inner fears,
whispering, close against doors shut fast.
Mocking our mostly  irrelevant tears,
clearly marking the future as our sordid past.

Our final pearl today is somewhat esoteric. In general, it speaks of the mind, and how we learn to use it, but, it’s not quite that simple, I think…. You’ll see…. Enjoy!….

Try Ignorance.”

“He who dares to teach must never cease to learn.” — John Cotton Dana, libraria (motto of Kean College of New Jersey)

“The hands that help are better far than the lips that pray.” — Robert Green Ingersoll

Once again, we have reached the final section, without having, to my knowledge, caused any bloodshed, unless it be amongst the targets of my vitriol, for whom bloodshed is the intended result. Having thus spit out the last of my humanity, I shall fold my tent, and fade into the sunrise, or sunset, depending on where you reside on the planet. Are we confused yet? Good. My job here is done. See y’all tomorrow, ffolkes; of that you may be sure….

Y’all take care out there,
and May the Metaphorse be with you;
Blessed Be, dearest Carole, Mark,Theresa, & Richy
and everyone else, too…

When I works, I works hard.
When I sits, I sits loose.
When I thinks, I falls asleep.

Which is Why….

Sometimes I sits and thinks,
   and sometimes,
I just sits.

Hajime….. After four-plus years blogging on WP, sitting down to begin has become a rather daunting task, as I never plan what to write ahead of time, but for the few-odd times I’ve tried to work ahead. It doesn’t make any difference, it seems; I’m always stuck at first for where to begin. SIGH…. It sounds like a complain, but, it really isn’t; I’m just tired, and chatting randomly to try to find a direction to follow. Since none seems to be presenting itself, I suppose we’ll go on, at least to the next paragraph, just so we can say we’re trying….

Good morrow, ffolkes. Welcome to another version of Pearls of Virtual Wisdom, which we gather while Exploring Consensual Reality, as best we may with the handicaps with which we are all burdened in today’s world. Those handicaps are generally the subject matter of the second, or ranting section, but, can leak into the intro in a heartbeat, such as now. We’ll try not to let it develop into a full-blown rant, but, it does happen, so, be aware. We like mindfulness around here, even if we can’t always seem to maintain it as long as we like. We are sorry, but, we are again stuck in the royal ‘we’, and will be moving on to the next paragraph, to see if we can shake it…

Hmm… This is getting a bit strange. I don’t usually advertise my grammatical intentions, and, it’s not usual for the royal ‘we’ to show up like that, willy-nilly. (Love that word…) I reckon it’s yet another symptom of my overall lack of direction this morning, but, it’s still rather a bother, as Pooh might say….. Oh, damn!….

Now I’m bringing Pooh into it! That does it, ffolkes. I’m getting us outta here before this gets any further from Reality, or we’ll never find our way to the oyster beds. Guido’s here today, since Luigi has fallen back off the wagon, so, we’ll get there in good time, as long as y’all hand on, & keep away from the salty snacks; the toilet is out of order…. Please, have a seat, fasten your restraints, and we’ll be off…. Well, okay, we’ve been off all morning, but, y’all know what I mean, I think…. Let’s go, Guido! They’ve been programmed…..

Shall we Pearl?….

everything gives way and nothing stays fixed.”

Sometimes, ya just gotta have it real. This man’s music is as real as it gets…. I read a comment on the page where I sought this album; it said, “Truth sticks to Tom Waits like maggots to a corpse–sheer in your face beauty…” I think it’s perfect…. Besides, once you hear his opening version of ‘Waltzing Matilda’, you’ll agree, I have no doubt…. Enjoy, ffolkes….

About Hopi Indian Symbols

Today, we are forgoing a rant, even though I had a good pearl picked out to use as a springboard. Instead, I’m including below a video, which I found yesterday on the blog site of a friend. She calls her site The Playground, Just Stuff Found On The Internet, and is, quite frankly, a .Gif meister, or, in her case, mistress. The video is short, but, if I were you, I’d keep a hankie, or some tissue at hand, for it will touch your heart, guaranteed…

It speaks of one of life’s lessons, which in this case is being received by a young boy. The lesson has to do with growing up, and leaving our fears behind us, in order to deal with the universe as it exists, rather than always trying to change reality to suit our own preconceived notions…. It also speaks of how we should handle those situations, for our own personal growth…. It’s lovely, and moving, and you’re going to like it…. Trust me on this one….

I found it, here: https://juststuffifoundontheinternet.wordpress.com/2016/03/05/the-present/

Comedy_Tragedy

For nearly my entire time here on WordPress, I’ve followed this writer; his name is Dean J. Baker. He has a Facebook & Twitter presence, and maintains several blogs. He is a poet, of the old-school, highly educated, both by his own reading & study, and by study in the School of Hard Knocks. His poetry, I find, is always erudite, often graphic, with unexpected turns, and depths. Often so powerful, I find them difficult to read, emotionally, (remember, I’m a softie at heart….). His verse is always real, and always human, for he has spent a relatively long life living for his art. In the future, I have a feeling his work will be considered mandatory for anyone who wishes to really understand modern poetry, and how it came to be that way….

Dean has written eight or a dozen volumes now, mostly poetry, with some studies of poets and poetry as well, of a more studious nature. I have included at the end of the section a link to his blog, where you can find links to purchase all of them, at prices way lower than they should be, or deserve. I now have several, and find they make excellent gifts at Christmas and birthdays…. Here is a poem from one of his latest volumes, Provenances and Paroles; it’s one I have, and can say it is well worth reading, and owning…. Enjoy, ffolkes; someday, you’ll know this name….

Paytriotism

by Dean J. Baker

The moron-in-chief is bellowing blandishments about
who to blame and how he’ll fix them, and it and us and
the entire country if this must be known, sounding
as much a bully as degenerate tool championing the demonic

A pure victim preaching a screed of vengeance, echoing
down the corridors where no power flows towards
the great unwashed, those born in anonymity
enduring invasion and alteration of scenery and a landscape

Of wailing babies thrust into another time change, fists
clenched and backsides spewing mortal frustration
against the ability to adapt, renew and prosper amid
all the obstacles and plinths of worship: one voice, one people

One country undivided against itself, the body politic
invaded and now to be restored to former glory,
after termed parasites and the infected are removed
leaving the corpse of patriotism to prove worthy of one more story

Unlearning what war means to distinguish between the focus
of good and evil, the narrow confines of a superlative truth
the small hunched tunnel towards another gas chamber: no journey
toward or onward cheating history again in a frieze of movement

Caught like lovers on a Grecian urn, now not forever young
as Keats had it but burned in effigy by the caricatures
come alive, holding truth hostage to their involvement,
seeking reparations against what they perpetrate and endlessly become

Golum, Golem, the perverse Prometheus, if you knew and did
not have to guess amid a flourishing ignorance of history or
Santayana (what he said), all ready to grab their chests in sentiment
crying salutations and promises of virginity to the new Death’s head

Our final, old-school pearl is one for which I feel compelled to create a new category, in order to properly acknowledge its uniqueness, and, the trouble it took to put together. SB was in a completely fractious frame of mind, or whatever passes for such in a database, shoveling crap upon crap out at me until I was cursing the programmers with every breath. I’m calling it:

Stuff You May Not Have Known About Life, All Of Which Is Good To Know….

Okay, so, I’m not good with titles; sue me…. It works for me….

“There is a road from the eye to the heart that does not go through the intellect.” — G.K. Chesterton

“Loneliness is the pain of being alone; solitude is the joy of being alone.” — Subtle Bee

“A child’s hand in yours — what tenderness and power it arouses. You are instantly the very touchstone of wisdom and strength.” — Marjorie Holmes

“He said that there was one only good, namely, knowledge; and one only evil, namely, ignorance.” — Diogenes Laertius — Socrates, xiv

“All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.” — Anatole France

“Except for our thoughts, there is nothing absolutely in our power.” — Descartes

“Character is that which can do without success.” — Emerson

********************************

Well, I did it, in spite of the handicaps. Good for me. And, good for y’all, as now you can get on with the rest of your Sunday. I hope it is a pleasant one, and will leave you here, so as to bring a dignified end to what may not deserve it…. See y’all tomorrow, ffolkes; that’s a big fer sure….

Y’all take care out there,
