Hajime…. I blew off another day, as y’all probably noticed; this time, it was to recover from the task completed while gone, to wit: babysitting my granddaughter for a day. In truth, taking a day to recover is mandatory for me after that, so, I feel no guilt or angst over having done so. How you feel about it is both another issue, and, your own problem. Not to say I am unsympathetic; I simply don’t care. Hah!

Well, maybe I do, a little. But, not enough to try to go back to fix anything, or try to change the way you feel about it; I have enough trouble with my own feelings…. and if that isn’t pretty typical for us humans, I can’t say what is. Nor, in my aged wisdom, will I bother to try, either to explain, nor to justify. I’ll just do as we humans are pretty adept at, which is to ignore the whole issue, & try to act as if it never happened. It never works, but, we like to think it does, & generally act accordingly, to our everlasting regret….

All that being said, to what purpose we’ll probably never know, why don’t I just forgo any further BS & get this posted, before I lose my nerve, or reality intrudes with some message from Murphy’s minions? I don’t know about y’all, but, that certainly seems like our best bet to get posted in a timely fashion, always soothing to my OCD need to get it done by a certain time, which my subconscious has decided is the most efficacious method. I’ve never bothered to figure out why that time is so damn early, but, that’s okay. Knowing wouldn’t help anything in particular, so, rather than beat a moribund soft-hoofed ungulate, we’ll get on with it, just as if that were our intention from the beginning. That, by the way, looks like this….

Shall we Pearl?….

Though I have had, and still have, sufficient time to choose music for today, I’ve decided to go with one of our standard selections, primarily because I like it; if y’all don’t, well, that’s on you, & there’s little I can do about it. What I CAN do is to remind you this organization does really good work, and is a strong positive force for peace in a world gone mad for war. The embedded video will lead you to hundreds of examples of the work they do, so, spend some time to listen, then, loosen up those purse strings, & lend a hand…. Enjoy!….

Gently Came a Wounded Child

But you shall not escape my iambics.

Soft, sinuous patterns of unearthly beauty
blithely commune with sinking stars,
as pale shadows of former virtue hover
near, ever clean, ever tolerant.
These unbidden habits are worn with age and care,
ready now for dissolution,
welcoming gladly the kiss of Death’s handmaiden.

Unknown to all, the child stands aside,
weeping for the lost days of youth,
days that now shall never be,
nor yearned for ever after.
Only darkness shall lay upon the landscape,
cold, hard, eternal.

Such then are the signs and portents
as we enter into the unknown future,
they are grave indeed.

Uncertainty will be our sole companion,
as the search for hope yields no result.
The lamentations of the gods
shall sound the elegy for Man,
who never learned to see the gift that was made,
so many echoes ago, in the hopeful past;
thus will we pass this plane of existence
as we came, baffled and afraid….

Hajime…. Good morning. Well, sort of. In any case, I have the elements of a complete Pearl, but, find myself with less than nothing about which to write here in the intro. Morning Glory….

Hajime…. While I’m uncertain what to call it, today’s freshly produced Pearl has been completed, not because of any great effort on my part, but, rather, in spite of it. I know, that doesn’t sound logical, or even coherently rational; it remains, however, the truth. It’s been a funny day or two, in the “ha-ha”, ironic sense, not the actual amusing sense; not everything I’ve done, or seen, or heard, or experienced vicariously makes much sense. But, I suppose one can always fall back on the realization, that’s pretty much how life goes. So, instead of dwelling upon matters which would have no real effect on what happens next, we’ll go on to whatever happens next.

Uh, oh…. I just realized, I am the one who must decide where to go, & what happens next. Oh, boy…. that could be a problem. No, wait, that’s not accurate; that WILL be a problem, due to a completely unambiguous state of confusion which I find to be my most prominent feature of intellect so far this morning. In short, I haven’t a clue as to what, or where to go with any of this. Of course, that’s probably nothing new, from your perspective; it’s only my own sense of angst which makes it problematic. Oh, wait…. Okay, we’re good to go; I realized, this entire paragraph, thus far, much like all of what you’ve seen, is so far off the rails, nothing at all will have any real effect on the outcome. Good, I can go on to the next paragraph with a clear conscience….

Well, relatively clear, anyway. Since I’ve already lost any thread which might tie all of this together, (not that we ever had one in our grasp today….), I’ll use what little executive privilege I have to move us all onto the next section, where we may find a bit more competence. We’ll find good music, if nothing else, so, it’s probably the correct way to go. Given the previously demonstrated lack of coherence, I’ll even do so with dispatch, to avoid any further feelings of guilt over what I’ve done here, of which I can easily, and honestly say, probably isn’t the best intro you’ve ever seen. It does have one distinct advantage, which is, it’s now done….

Shall we Pearl?….

Manifesto, sotto voce

In retrospect, I have to say,
it’s all been rather a muddle.
Life is tough, so ‘they’ all say,
plenty of misery, without much cuddle.

Me, I’ve found life a bit different
than ‘they’ seem to have done.
It’s all been rather excellent;
I’ve had loads  & loads of fun.

Sure, there’s been some bad shit.
Who can’t say that?
All of that pales, all of it,
beside the love of a dog, a child, or a cat.

I’ve striven, perhaps more than my share,
against all the evil in life.
The pain that remains often seems unfair,
until I have to ask, why did I chose such strife?

The answer is found, always in the same place,
right where it has ever resided.
All we need is to embrace
the joy just living has provided.

Simple is good.
Balance is good.

Life is both.

Distant signs of wonder….

Ffolkes,

“All nature is but art unknown to thee.”

~~ Alexander Pope ~~

morning glory

Peeking Beauty….

Hajime…. Today’s post is a testament to the power of either my sense of duty, or, OCD take your pick. Having mentioned in yesterday’s re-blog I would post today, I am caught, by my own rather compelling need to live up to my words. I’m not particularly interested in knowing wherefrom the impulse may have arisen, but, there ’tis, in all its intense glory. So, I’ve cobbled this Pearl together, almost literally out of thin air, in order to live up to my statement, ill-advised though it may have been. I’m a Bozo, to be sure, but, an honest Bozo, and can be trusted to live up to my own word, if naught else. Sarge wouldn’t like it if I didn’t….

Life of late has been full; it’s strange, in many ways, to experience the aging process while my mind still feels young & strong. In many ways, getting old resembles the experience of being young, for I am continually learning new paradigms under which I must live, if I am to live with any elegance (a deliberately chosen word, I would add; I decided long ago Life should be approached as if we were creating a fine work of art, to embody the grace we seek to include in our living, to match the implacable grandeur so amply displayed by Nature and the Universe…..). Achieving any significant degree of such elegance, I find, becomes not harder, but, more involved & complex, as we grow older. We know HOW to do most things, but, in ways that assume a certain degree of physical capability no longer available to our aging bodies; our task thus becomes the process of learning HOW all over again….

I suppose that all sounds a bit convoluted, but, it is nonetheless the case. Rather than spend any more time trying to explain the Why of it, I’ll just get on with the show, just as if it made any difference in the overall scheme of things. Besides, the weather today is looking rather fine, & the wide world is calling me to take my camera, & go find some beauty to record, so it can be shared. It’s not a grand plan, but, ’tis my own; this process, though still necessary, has become a secondary impulse, with the need to go walkabout assuming a primary importance, no less compelling than my need to maintain sanity. It’s all relative, ain’t it? On that true, if obscure note, I think I’ll flip this switch over here, which will take us abruptly to where we need to be….

Shall we Pearl?….

“Experience is not what happens to you.
It is what you do with what happens to you.”

I hope y’all will consider taking part, as well as consider contributing to the cause, which helps children and communities in many countries come together to learn to play & sing, and to work together as people do best to make change in the world…. I hope you enjoy today’s selection, and that you enjoy taking part in humanity’s saving grace…. making music….

Back in 2012, I had just applied to SS for my benefits, but, was still living in relative poverty until it arrived, with no chance or hope of being able to travel further than the nearest grocery store on payday. But, I dreamed of it all the time, particularly of going to Ireland, where I’ve been called ever since a child. I made it, eventually, and have been there twice now, with plans to go back as soon as I can figure it out. This poem explains my urges in this respect quite well, if with a bit of mild corn…. I hope you enjoy it….

Days and Nights of Eire

Comforting, a dream creeps oft into my mind
On the elven hills of Eire lives the vision I find.
Elegant, gracious, everlastingly draped in beauty
Just payment of simple homage lives as joyous duty.

Fairies and druids walk abroad in ghostly parade
Gracing each hearth with its own welcoming shade.
Castles and heroes yet live in tale and song
Proving love for the land in each heart strong.

From cold of winter into glorious young spring
Brown, and gray, to emerald green songs to sing
Soft rains always follow winter’s great tempest
Eire dons its emerald coat from east to west.

Old and strong, connections call out in dreams
Nothing that was known remains as it seems.
Immersion in ancient runes and battle hymns
Offering sanity in place of grievous whims.

Time and place can tell a much different tale
Judgment should never be a final sale.
Yet something solid and real calls me to go see
Where dreams of loving beauty may actually be….

Hajime…. All the elements of a fresh Pearl are in place, with standard adjustments to the lineup necessitated by the new poem NOT getting done. We also went with default music, but, there’s a fresh old-school pearl, which, though a trifle obscure, has its own charm. No rant, either, but, that’s nothing new for these days; ranting just doesn’t seem to cut the mustard for me of late. I guess I’d rather confine myself to less antagonistic matters, which has the advantage of producing less angst, which I can only applaud.

In truth, my mind is elsewhere; if I knew exactly where that ‘else’ might be, this would be simpler. But, having depended heavily upon the process for too long now, it’s all I can do to keep doing so; whether it will continue to function as intended remains to be seen. I think, in today’s case, I’m not going to even look; that way I won’t see if it doesn’t do what it should. And, yes, I’m now thoroughly confused; if you are not, well, good for you. That means you’ve learned to take whatever you read here with a healthy dose of doubt, sufficient to keep from investing any belief, which is always a good thing. We do love our doubts ’round here….

I can feel this getting away from me; much of that last paragraph will require some metaphoric translation to process; unfortunately, the translator is unplugged, as it consumes far too much power to justify its use in such non-critical instances. But, I digress, not an uncommon practice, but, inconvenient. Rather than beat this moribund soft-hoofed ungulate any more, why don’t we just get on with it. Maybe, if we do, we might even make it to the end by breakfast time. Even if we don’t, it will look better on the official record…. Hang on, I’m going in hot….

Patterns exist to bring sanity, if illusory, at best;
follicular, reality seems to slip and slide.
Still, formal insanity consistently fails the ultimate test,
why place faith in answers. from which truth can hide?

Following the music brings us back in good time;
forever seemingly retreats from relevance.
Crazy, time stands still with yet another innovative rhyme,
no burgeoning intentions for sale, to shimmy. or dance.

Folly sits easily upon this brow;
fateful and afraid, entropy bows in shame.
Into the river of time, slowly, forgetful of how
courage gives strength, no matter the game.

Capricious, the muse demands obedient attention
at risk of exhibiting true durance vile.
Bereft, single copies sit unused, despite all intention;
while singular examples of fate pass at the stile.

Seminal events bring their own weight;
no scale necessary, no guessing by eye, or hand.
Only one lesson to learn, just pay the freight;
the music is playing, and you’re part of the band.

I’m planning a few changes to the basic routines around here, in preparation for going into full training. More on that another time; for now, I’ll just say, see y’all soon, (tomorrow, if all goes well), & let the rest of the day take care of itself…. Be well, & happy as you may….

Y’all take care out there,
and May the Metaphorse be with you;

Neighborhood scoundrel at play….

Hajime…. Yesterday, this sleepy little seaside town saw 103º F, which lasted through the night; it was still 85º at 10:00 pm. It’s 0630 now, & already pushing 80º, with a high predicted to reach 105º. But, climate change is just a myth, so, nothing to see here, move along. To watch people try to deal with such temps would be amusing, if it weren’t so pathetic, and, for many of society’s less capable or challenged individuals, dangerous to their health & well-being. Like Bert Russell once noted, sometimes one must be moved to a bottomless well of pity for the suffering of mankind…. I would share his sentiment, if it were not so clearly their own damn fault most of the time.

But, it’s too damn hot, and early, to rant; moreover, I really don’t want to do so very much, not any more. What’s the point, when virtually nobody listens, or makes any attempt to change their lives, or the way they approach it, which is, almost always, the root cause of all their suffering? Oh, well, I suppose some folks enjoy drama in their lives, though I can’t claim to understand why. I guess, when one suffers from a sense of helplessness and confusion, drama seems like a way to feel something other than dread and despair. SIGH…. Silly humans….

Rather than continue in such a fruitless vein, let’s do something else. Since I have most of this done, I suggest we move on down the page, listen to a bit of music, enjoy today’s poem choice, & some fine, if relatively obscure pearls of virtual wisdom, strung together on a common thread, together becoming greater than the sum of parts. Plus, if nothing else, it will serve to distract me from the ridiculous heat we’re experiencing around here, long enough to run a cool bath…. See y’all down the line….

Shall we Pearl?….

Today’s poem is for those living in the greater Pacific Northwest, who, with me, are suffering the heat; it’s a winter poem, & may provide a bit of cooling distraction, if only for the time it takes to read and consider…. Enjoy!….

A Seasonal Approach

Absolute stillness grips a frozen field,
anticipating dawn with such patient yield
morning burgeoning in dark winter’s hold
brings promise of tales yet to be told.

Lengthening days of pale sun unto night
slowly tell of time’s subversive flight
bringing such original songs of natural fire
with melodies complex in casual attire.

The months are certain they will always win
it is just the way it has always been.
None may argue, nor yet slow life down
Nor dim the eternal beauty of nature’s gown.

Winter evolves from fall into spring,
sending flocks and hearts ever awing.
Summer follows suit, t’other way ’round
Spring into fall, often without a sound.

Life is meant to be lived, beginning to end
choices abound, and change can be a friend.
Yielding with grace to reality’s compelling ploy
fills our plain existence with clean, honest joy.

Hajime…. Rather than spending two or three paragraphs detailing the extent of the effort necessary to post today’s Pearl, I’ll merely describe the entire episode as ‘epic’, & let it go at that. After all, the introduction of any type of literature implies some sort of ‘introduction’, not a compendium of gratuitous pandering in solicitation of sympathy. As some BBC show once noted God to have said, “I AM the Supreme Deity, y’know. I’m not entirely dim.” In this case, I’m God, with more insight…. I know, sounds not merely blasphemous, but, arrogant. But, give me a break; it’s early yet.

Oh, right. Introduction. What we have here is a Pearl of Virtual Wisdom, comprised of all the standard parts in the current format. As such, there really isn’t much more to say, so, I’ll let today’s collection of assembled thoughts on Life at Large, as expressed in various venues, speak the rest of our message, such as it may be, for itself…. If you don’t quite follow the dots to a clear picture, no worries; the journey is the thing, not the destination, or, as we are so fond of reminding ourself, especially when we get stuck in the royal we, “the map is NOT the terrain.”

I could add quite a bit more, I suppose, but, the simple truth is, it wouldn’t help, so, from this point, you’re on your own… No surprise there, eh?….

Shall we Pearl?….

Vague Glimpses of a Rainbow

All the sad notions of propriety had fled,
Screaming their anger for pausing in song,
Until late came the rabid fog, colored in red,
As serenity cried, unafraid to live so strong.

Fallow fields in faithful patience set free,
Dragged from birth, by their own nature cast
Saving each moment against fear yet to be,
Carved into silence, by ignorance held fast.

Historical forces plod slowly ’tis often said
Anxieties streaming stiffly, one epoch to the next.
Cultural mania stands nonchalant in its stead
No sadder epitaph has such bittersweet context.

Patterned bags of forgotten virtue lie in wait
Blessed by reminders whose souls value affinity
Frozen webs surround the fields in gravid state
Grasping passionately within obvious opportunity.

Passage to future realities isn’t guaranteed
Small favors for deities was left off the menu
No roses, nor manna, nor gallant aerial steed
Left traces of fatal, yet originally gracious venue.

Hajime…. Though I know ‘hope’ to be, in general, a denial of reality, I still allowed myself to entertain some, investing it in my wish to write a most excellent Pearl, including a bright, catchy, and compelling intro section. As usual, ‘hope’ fails the test of time, & while all the elements of a decent piece of work are present, the bright, compelling part has shown  itself to be rather problematic. This, of course, is a natural function of my brain, to find even the simplest of tasks problematic; I can’t be positive, but, it’s a pretty sure bet it’s my own fault…. I mean, given my history, (I AM a human…), and my  inclinations, (curmudgeon-in-training….), whom else can I blame?….

Still, I guess I can be content with having completed it, at all; my recent lack of consistency, while unsurprising after so much time, still manages to cause me a bit of unwanted and unfamiliar guilt, which, having completed today’s task in a relatively timely, if uncomfortably rushed fashion, can be dismissed as misguided, for today, anyway. As for tomorrow, well, I AM old enough to know better than to place much faith or hope in THAT; after all, as we all know, tomorrow may never come, right? Right. So, we’ll regard that as a fait accompli, which if you think about it, is a pretty neat trick….

What? That last reference is unclear? SIGH…. It must be the extra scoop of coffee I put in the basket this morning; got me typing nearly as fast as I’m thinking. That’s always a confusing thing when one starts discussing matters of time; past, present, future are all rather uniquely related, in a very real way, & our imagination, while a powerful tool, usually isn’t up to the task of keeping them all in their appropriate places, actually believing it has the power to do so in reality, as well as in the mind…. Silly humans. Ah, well, don’t fret; it’ll all be clear eventually, & if not, well, it will give you something to chew over in those quiet moments….

As for me/us, & today’s Pearl, well, we’ll practice what we preach, & get on with it, any time now. In fact, isn’t that our signal? Yes, yes it is, and, look! We’ve already been cleared for landing, or, take-off…. It’s our choice, & I promise, we’ll make it as random as we can….

Augmentation: Inner Aye

Distant, peals of thunder, vividly.
Closer, a patter of rain, falling gravidly.
Between the light and the darkness of fear
find merely the remnants of one lonely tear.

Do not hate us, though we have not sinned;
eager for courage, upon whom all hope is pinned.
Tales of insolence, hatred, or fallen virtue
fill us up, not down, in such pristine foreign venue.

Capable hands severed, able hands tied;
the future is angry, all but now denied.
Multiple times, warnings sounded across the pale
nobody heard, nobody came to tell the tale.

Gifted by time, salience fails in epic rhyme;
watchmakers watching, each a separate crime.
Logical solutions refuse to emulsify
forever pretending to cruelly crucify.

Blood will fly alongside pertinent composure,
never seeking, never finding tea, or closure.
Falsely laid trails on mountains of gold
imply no happy endings, no fortunes told.

Ages past have no time for repetition;
further chances only lead to perdition.
Destiny feels a shameful portion of guilt,
for a thousand sand castles, never built.

Early morning rose….

Hajime…. Though this Pearl has been late getting posted, I feel no sense of urgency, since it’s done, & done as well as it is going to be. All the elements are in place, though not with the fresh poem I’d hoped to include; it seems reluctant to finish leaking out, no matter how widely I open the vein…. So be it. It can’t be forced, or, it will simply disappear. But, I found a suitable replacement, so, if I can cease dithering, we might just see it done today. One is allowed to hope, if not encouraged to indulge such weaknesses…

I have yet to come up with anything particularly new, or compelling, in the way of an intro section; not surprising, considering we’ve been unable to do that for about six years now. But, once again, wandering around in what passes for my brain seems to provide sufficient blather to fill up the emptiest of spaces, so, who am I to complain? In fact, I’m going to show some rather unusual compassion, by exercising my executive authority to call a halt to any further torturous involvement in this sort of inclement activity, & simply get on with our business for the day. What a novel concept!….

Not merely novel, either; it’s actually efficient. Watch this….

Visible life

Forty-two days of pressure and internal rain,
leave marks of salvation, often in pain.
Such sharp reminders of yesterday’s remorse
fight heavily to keep a straight course.
Rash moments, bright, and routinely immense
Give us pleasure, bereft of common sense.

Still the night comes soft and eternally dear
to bring out wishful dreams so vitally clear.
Life’s myrmidons give freely in protest
lifting with skill, soul pieces first to infest,
Loudly brash, with no such voices to remain
Sealed in infamy, branded ugliness all too plain.

Now come brave signs of chapter and verse
Shielded by ignorance, irritable and terse.
Gravid portions of in-between retaliation
leave only pale marks of initial gestation
With hope even pallid warriors grow brave
Leading all humanity, to a warm, stale grave.

Hope never falters, nor leaves any trace
Yet lingers forever in a welcoming space.
Cheerful faces yet shine out of time
for tricking and fumbling sweet melody sublime.
Fill in the spaces with a long, strong retort
life is ever visible, if only as last resort.

Hajime…. Though up late, & mildly overhung, somehow, all the properly aligned elements of a standard Pearl (modern version) are present & accounted for, if not justified by any rational means. To support such inordinate efficiency, as well as to applaud the will power displayed, I’ll truncate this intro, rather unmercifully, compressing & editing it to within an inch of insanity. Getting close to that is, for me, a snap, as I usually hang out right around the corner, anyway. You may ask yourself, why bother at all, but, then, you’re not the one who has the obsession to get this done, before attempting any other of Life’s activities of daily living, as to do so tempts Murphy, and Fate, neither of whose kind attentions are well-liked in these parts…..

You may also ask yourself how I intend to extract myself from what has already turned viciously overblown, when I can’t even seem to find the wherewithal to stop typing such gratuitous nonsense without the appropriate degree of shame…. and, you’d probably be right to ask…. But, I do happen to have, right here in my bag, a trick, a touch of sleight of hand, so to speak, which should settle matters quite nicely. What is it? Why, it goes like this….

Shall we Pearl?….

“What you see is from outside yourself,
and may come, or not, but is beyond your control.
But your fear is yours, and yours alone, like your voice,

A Failure to Germinate

Marking the days in elements of sad disarray
only holds me thrall, as I laugh while I may.
With cold, hard hands so impatient and cruel
pulling me to this vale of tears, a pathetic old fool.

Feelings sit silent, cast in shadows and light
breaking forth to implicate such vengeful might.
Just below the surface they patiently hide
to sally forth bravely, colors bright as they ride.

Tears and pain transform valued assets in hand
while comfort and serenity retreat to a far land.
Bold, bright patterns of hope garnish my ruinous state
until reality enters, full of disdainful portions of hate.

I sort out the illustrious measures of vision gone mild
only to find them transformed, now vicious and wild.
In my deepest desires I find myself calloused and cold
with faithless advocates whose souls have been sold.

My search finds little to support any hope of relief
far too much time has passed to bolster such belief.
The sad becomes real, and real becomes unfounded
until flights of such fancy are all dead, and grounded.

Nature has informed me of the newly hatched crime
of which reality boasted proudly, time after time.
The last answer we think of is always the best
as we come to terms with fate, our hope at rest.
