Good morrow… Though it’s good to be back on-line, I’m finding it problematic to accomplish all I’d originally intended to get done. The primary reason is my body’s newly-won physical capabilities and paradigms, which tend to push me out of my chair to go DO something outside, rather than here at the computer; so far, I’ve been unable to spend much time on other sites I wanted to catch up, as well as failing to get much writing done, on a personal level (no new poems, & the exposition’s stalled….),… SIGH…. It’s not really a complaint, more of a reluctantly honest observation…. I suppose the only thing to say on this is ‘c’est la vie’, with a resigned air; I won’t indulge in it any further, in the interests of efficiency.

Actually, some might say it’s all quite fortunate, at least for y’all, as it means I’ll be compelled, yet again, to skip any major nonsense here in the intro; doing so would only be indulgent, & I’m not certain I’m ready to take that on just yet. Instead, I’ll employ the very same method used thus far, which is the classic drop-off-the-cliff technique, & looks just like this….

No introduction should be necessary for today’s musical selection. The videos I’ve included are from the Black & White Night concert; his last live performance before passing on. Below this, I’ve also included a link to Roy Orbison.com, where you can find memorabilia & music for sale, as well as news of a tour coming up beginning October 1, 2018, wherein holographic technology will bring Roy to life with live orchestration of new versions of his classics…. I hope you enjoy this one; he was a pretty special artist….

Unheralded Sagacity…

To many, who will not see beyond their nose
the world becomes a dangerous place,
a bullet in every gun, a thorn with every rose,
no magic comes to save us, reality leaves no trace.

Minds closed, wrapped tight in manufactured fears,
men become clay, easily molded into complacent form.
No chains needed, held in thrall for years,
lies become gospel, when dishonesty is the norm.

Shed the chains you wear in durance, in kind;
Oh, ye of little faith, and much doubt
Strength is found in an unfettered mind,
Cry “freedom” with a great shout.

No help from any gods can hinder so much
as our own lack of confidence;
finding the light within, knowing it as such
confirms us, becoming consequence.

Illumination…..

There you have it, such as it is. I’ll bet you didn’t think I could get this far, did you? Just goes to show how far in today’s world expectations will get you, doesn’t it? We all must learn to live with reality, just the way it is, & this is merely a graphic demonstration of that simple, yet basic life lesson? Pretty nifty, eh? Well, regardless of how any of us think about it, that’s just the way it is…. so, deal with it. SF Skyline framed by the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge….

Hajime…. Since making the decision not to post regularly, the Big Blue Room has continued to draw my attention much more frequently than the events taking place in cyberspace. On Saturday, I attended a play in which my grandson played two small parts. I attended with both my kids, as well as my son’s daughter & step-sister. Such family events have been few and far between for me/us, but, the fact we now are able to get together on occasion brings me a lot of satisfaction, to say the least.

I’ve also spent a lot of time walking, putting in about five miles one day, without collapsing into exhaustion; this is also a new, rare feeling, one I welcome in lieu of the lack of physical ability I’ve ‘enjoyed’ for much too long. All in all, I have to say I’m enjoying my time back in Reality more than I thought would be the case, given the state of that frame of existence. Oh, there is plenty out there at which to rage; the continual reminders of homelessness in society, the lack of community feeling fostered by our divisive leaders, the rampant capitalism which most of society tends to ignore, in favor of chasing the shiny, insubstantial dreams offered for their distraction from how much they are being manipulated. Hell, just watching any major sport on TV can stimulate my ranting button, when I think of all the wasted time & money which could be put to use to aid those in need, rather than making the rich richer.

But, mostly, I have been enjoying the blue skies, the rain, the clouds, and the still-extant panorama of life on this planet, all of which helps me to connect with what is real, rather than what is due to humanity’s imagination, and their insistence on forcing reality into the shape they desire. In some way, all of what I now perceive is bringing me closer to clarity, in my thinking, and in my actions. Sadly, I still do not find very many people who can appreciate my thoughts about reality; most of the folks I meet out in the BBR are too focused on the shiny distractions of life, and completely miss the stuff going on that is actually real, and, in my view, much more important than ANYTHING they see on a TV, or their phone, or, on a computer. If I were still giving in to the urge to rant, I’d find no lack of issues about which to do so.

I suppose one could call all the above a paean to Life as I now see it; it seems more important to me to find clarity, and the realness of life, than to engage in any of the nonsensical pastimes society fosters upon us in its paroxysms of insanity. The leaders of this world’s political/religious oriented culture are, in my estimation, ALL verifiably insane…. sociopathic narcissists, mostly, though in certain cases, massive ignorance and bigotry mark them as just plain assholes, akin to what many would call ignorant rednecks. We’ve got one of those in this country, right in the White House; I guess that’s why all the 50 million other ignorant redneck assholes who reside here are in such a dither of entitlement, & busily spreading their particular brand of selfish bigotry as far & wide as they can…

Wow. I think I just spewed out a rant, didn’t I? Ah, well, old habits die hard, I guess. To make up for it, let’s go see what else I’ve thrown together for today’s offering, shall we? I think, given how easily all that vitriol spewed out, it would be a good idea, lest I fall right back into where I no longer wish to go. Instead, let’s make use of this old #4 I found lying here, & get on with the rest of today’s mess. It works just like this….

I’ve included two links; the first is to the home web site, the other is to one day’s offering, on which page you can obtain all the previous days’ downloads, for the entire month. Raging at Aging

As old as you feel, we are told, is old as you are,
custom assures such vision will carry us far.
Reality begs to differ, may it be so bold
it is really quite painful, and very, very cold.

The power and strength felt in our halcyon youth
desert us with age, yet another unwelcome truth.
Irony rules our time here on this bountiful earth
as we reflect the changes over time since our birth.

As physical powers fade from this fragile shell,
we learn our mind can serve us quite as well.
The strength that once filled our bones and hearts
is now applied by our will, to more arcane arts.

Life’s greatest gift is our freedom of choice
no matter how often we forget, we still get a voice.
Energy, or apathy, by our will we may choose,
failing to do so, our only way to lose.

Each of us lives in the grip of time and space,
always seeking our balance, our own chosen place.
One must accept reality, for it is true at the core,
all we can do, is all we can do, and nothing more.

Sanity off the port bow….

4/2/2017

Ffolkes,

“Every man is a divinity in disguise, a god playing the fool.”

~~ Ralph Waldo Emerson ~~

leelu in odd pose

“Because it’s comfortable. Why?….”

Hajime…. In spite of how little incentive I find to finish and post today’s Pearl, I will do so; for those of us who write for the same reason we breathe, incentive is irrelevant, for it appeals only to self-interest, which has no bearing on duty, or survival, both of which are their own incentive. This, of course, means we will get posted, if only to demonstrate how critical it is to be true to oneself. I am beset by demons, some physical, some cerebral, either of which would be sufficient to keep me from completing today’s effort; duty, chosen or demanded, provides adequate reason to disregard any demands such distraction implies….

Having thus dismissed any attempts to sublimate, or to procrastinate, I shall proceed to do what is necessary to get posted. As is already clear, all the true issues involved have been placed into the vault, where they won’t distract me from doing what is required. Perhaps, in some future time, it will all come into some sort of balanced level of coherency; then, again, perhaps not. At this juncture, this too, is irrelevant, if not downright obscure. In fact, I may have achieved a new level of such obscurity, though such would be hard to determine. And, in the final analysis, who cares? Not me; I’m too crazy today.

I will take a moment, though, to express my regrets to those blogs where I make a habit of commenting. For some days now, sitting long enough to visit other blogs has been put on a back burner, as all the time available to me for such activity has been used up by the act of posting. I’m even having a hard time sitting enough to do any reading; to me, that is as close to hell as I ever get. I will offer my apologies to those blogging friends whose sites I’ve not gone to; my only excuse is self-preservation, which all of us, necessarily, place ahead of most everything else we may wish to do. All I can say is, I hope to do better, in the near future….

Having thus soothed my angst, as far as possible, I believe it would be best to just get on with this, before I become any MORE obscure, through trying to maintain some dignity. Dignity, for us Bozos, doesn’t come easily, patently. But, then, given the state of insanity currently extant in reality, I suppose that isn’t much of a surprise. In any case, it’s time to get this slow on the toad, so, hang on, while I make a quick, hard turn into efficiency, if not elegance…. Don’t worry, it will all be over soon….

Shall we Pearl?

Premises, premises….

Tricked, I stumble, and I fall
dreaming, through an abandoned palace.
Frightened and wary, unheard my call
fading into memory, no cup, no argent chalice.

The people, crushed, cry out to be freed
asking only to take part, or travel.
Nascent oaths spotlight such bursting need
fed by treachery, deep from our well.

Only the wicked shall find their way blocked
justice seeks them, snug in their hole.
Faint praises never touched, but naked, stalked
singing no gospel, no soul, no rock and roll.

Only the promised will remember the way
from unforgiven trails of sorrow.
To live life, and give death no sway,
saving grace for our only tomorrow.

Yet another hallucination to talk to….

Ffolkes,

17. “When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.”

~~ Instructions for life ~~

day-the-next-006

“Sphere Within A Sphere”, Trinity College, Dublin

Hajime…. Officially, the celebration of this date among those in the world who embrace Christianity as their personal form of religion (delusion), began a bit over 9 hours ago, when it passed midnight in Greenwich, England. For me, that’s fortunate, for it means I now have only 16 hours more to remain secluded; it should be safe for me to go out and about by the time this part of the world goes dark for the day. SIGH…. I hate to be stuck indoors on what promises to be a fairly bright, if cool day here in California, but, it’s best for everyone if I avoid crowds, or the chance of too much interaction with the natives on such a day. My patience, as I found yesterday on my long walk, is just about gone; if I hear one more ‘cute’ version of Jingle Bells, the results could be catastrophic… & not just for me….

It’s a good thing I treasure, and enjoy my solitude; if I find a need to leave the house today, I’ll talk myself out of it, without the attendant guilt, which is, in the final analysis, merely a remnant of early conditioning, long thrown into the trash heap of luggage left behind. I’ve come to terms with the fact of my own difference from those I call ‘mundanes’; it’s too bad they don’t seem to be able to do the same. A bit of reciprocity is a good thing in life, for it mimics reality by it’s flexible amiability, and willingness to just ‘be’…. but, that’s okay, too. They can’t help being the way they are; they gave up thinking for themselves when they accepted the idea of having been the lab experiment of some supernatural, misogynistic bully, who generally seems to display the manners of a two-year-old….

But, that’s just me, I guess, & I don’t hold their belief against them. I also, however, try not to use it against them, by taking advantage of their gullibility any more than is necessary for personal security (which is more than can be said of their ‘preachers’ who use their belief to manipulate their minds endlessly, and shamelessly. If there is a viable candidate in reality for feeling guilt, they are the ones who deserve it….). It isn’t very hard, for they’ve been conditioned since they first learned to understand their own language, by their parents, first, who pass along their own conditioning, then by peers also under the thrall, and, by the clergy, the bureaucrats, the predators of humanity, who use these ‘mundanes’ as their own personal slaves…

Hmm… this has turned a bit rantish, hasn’t it? I really didn’t mean to get into a discussion of what I consider the futility of such religious holidays this morning; when I sat down I had the intention of going humorous. I guess, in thinking about how much religion has stolen from humanity, including much of our potential, and any hope for change unless stopped, it gets to my sense of justice, and, voilá, I rant. Oh, well. So be it. I’m a curmudgeon, and I don’t buy any of the bullshit they’re trying to sell. It’s my own thing, and, to keep from alienating anyone who feels the need for such nonsense as conflict, with attendant emotional investment, regarding ideas (the sure mark of a mundane, to my mind….), I’ll cease and desist, here, and now…. Besides… We have better stuff we can do; the Pearl for today is, if naught else, highly entertaining….

We have some rather fine music, (unless you’re tone deaf, or, deluded, you’ll like it….), a decent, if somewhat metaphorically metaphysical poem, and the usual collection of wisdom from the sages of the ages. It’s kept me (relatively) sane for the past couple hours, putting it together, so, it’s all good in my book. I’ve read enough of that book now, so, why don’t we get the slow on the toad, eh?….

Shall we Pearl?

only to bring us up short,

Still, we keep our watch,
seeking to find the vision
that brings with it the mark of reality’s regard,
a humble mind, and a compassionate heart.

Events of broad impact draw us away again,
distracting with shiny glitter and tinny music,
leaving our feelings raw and bruised,
the victim of universal disregard.

Now, in the twilight of years, the music is fading,
and the glitter has all gone….
yet the memory of visions remains sharp and clear,
melancholy reminders of reality’s promises,

Silver Path to the Golden Gate….

Hajime…. Ugh. It is now 0403 here in California. I’ve been up for a bit over an hour, having decided several weeks ago to cease the morning battle with my familiar, & just get up when she does, rather than starting the day already adrenalized. It seems to be working, as it allows me ample time to compose, and post the daily Pearl, and still furnish Leelu with enough attention to satisfy her need to play, or cuddle. I’ve related previously how much like being married it is to have a familiar; the evidence for that continues to mount….

The only problem with getting up so early is the time it takes from my ability to get things done out in the BBR, for, by the time the rest of the world is awake around here, I’ve been up close to six hours. At my age, that means I need a nap, right around 0900, if I’m to make it long enough to see sunset, much less the next sunrise. It also means I do get to see the latter every day, which is enjoyable, as well as uplifting, as any sunrise is to us humans. We do like beginnings, so full of promise…..

What happens after sunrise is anybody’s guess, and does not always match our hopes for it. Such, then, is life, for all of us. Since I’ve managed to wax philosophical so well, so early, I’ll take advantage of the relative comatose state that has, no doubt, engendered in your minds; it isn’t deliberate, but, since it’s handy, I’ll take advantage of it. I don’t think we’ll cause any lasting harm by doing so, unless, of course, someone begins to struggle. Then, the restraints we use as a matter of course, (and, insurance regulations) can cause some bruising, from the rough ride. But, most likely, y’all will just nod your heads, and wake up somewhere down the page. So be it.

Since I’ve set the stage so well, why don’t we jump right in….

Shall we Pearl?….

The sound quality is excellent, and, should you wish for more of the same, there are plenty of choices on the You Tube page where the link in the screen will take you…. Enjoy, ffolkes; this song may be more relevant than you may think….

Intelligent Crimes

The value of wit is often said to cause harm,
for those who think, such is its greatest charm.
The new and the bold cannot be fulfilled
if innovation and change is left unwilled.

Society behaves at its base as a mob
conformity and submission its primary job.
Any sign of rebellion against the mob’s rule
is met with resentment, naming such rebel the fool.

Intellect and talent are looked at askance,
expressing artistry stands nary a chance.
To stand out from the rest of mankind
is fraught with danger, for body and mind.

Often I stand to watch in solemn dismay
as beauty and joy are left by the way,
ignored and reviled by the unwashed masses
who prefer darkness, and acting like asses.

With shouts of derision the normals make known
their fear of intelligence, greater than their own.
They hope to stop all semblance of progress;
for thoughts and ideas, they couldn’t care less.

The world struggles on in spite of all opposition,
managing to maintain its advanced position.
Pulling the foolish along in spite of reluctance,
helping each to learn the survival dance.

Hard though it may be to keep up with the future
genius manages its plans to develop and nurture.
In the final analysis, those who live by reason
enjoy life the most, season to season.

Blog posts are, in some ways, like a photograph. They show the version of reality experienced by the writer, at the moment of posting, with evidence within each line of the experience of each moment it took to write. Thus, to assume the picture, or the blog post, represents anything more than that instant of time, is to make a mistake in reasoning. Each person who writes a blog is more than what you see, no matter how well they have infused themselves into what they’ve written.

What does any of this have to do with a closing? Not much, other than to point out my day, from this early point onward, will be much different than what you may see here, and may well be a better story/poem/song/dance. Or, not. No matter how it turns out, this one is done, and that’s what matters just now. I hope y’all enjoyed it, and hope to see y’all again tomorrow, when, despite all methodology, and despite all opposition, from reality, and from my inner demons, I’ll do this again. Hajime…. As you see from the picture, I was not allowed to compute yesterday. I managed to do a small bit of surfing, during one of her naps, as indicated by the re-blog I posted yesterday afternoon, but, that was about all I got in. So be it. Since I’m still in somewhat of a mood, we’ll forgo a lengthy intro, in favor of getting right into the mess for today. Given the status of my muse, and our rather touchy relations just now, that’s likely the most productive scenario I can put together, anyway. Today’s musical selection is from a group of progressive bluegrass musicians from Ohio. I found their covers of some Grateful Dead tunes in the 2014 Dead Covers Project, and was totally amazed at the music they make together. Guitar, mandolin, bass, violin, all played with superb talent, and voices that blend in excellent harmony. They have fun when they play, and you will, too, when you listen, and watch. Dont keep calm

I’d hoped to have a fresh rant done, but, it’s stalled. Here, to sublimate the urge to vent against the machine, is a pearl from early 2013, speaking of our old friends (not), the Asininnies….

From 3/28/2013:

“In order to become the master, the politician poses as the servant.” — Charles de Gaulle

Charles de Gaulle was a very interesting man, as this aphorism makes clear. It’s not your typical statement from someone so deeply involved in politics as to have been the Dictator/President of France, as he was for so long, but,  the quote IS/WAS typical of him, or, at least, of the image he projected, as a maverick in the political world, both inside and outside of France.  If I recall my history correctly, (he was alive for much of the first half of my life….), other world leaders didn’t trust him much, which tends to give him more cachet, in my mind…. If the normal run of politico mistrusted him, he’s obviously my kind of guy, as that kind of reaction from a politician generally implies the target subject is an honest man….

With this statement, he pulls the covers of the greater percentage of those in public office. Those eminent officials are constantly spouting off about how they are “public servants” and how their salaries are paid by the taxpayers…. All the while, they are shoveling money from the public treasury into their pockets just as fast as their little hands can move. They make the same noises when they are up for re-election, to further solidify the image they wish to project, as concerned citizens just following their hearts to help the people, when in fact, they are merely petty thieves, with slick tongues and a smooth patter…. no more honest than a street grifter, and no more likely to give a shit about anyone else….

I’m not going to make this a long rant today; this is one subject that is so obvious (to me) that I hesitate to even write about it, as it would be insulting my readers to assume they weren’t aware of this truism. But, I did want to remind y’all that, no matter how honest and sincere a politician may seem, no matter how often they tell you they are just your servant, they are lying, bare-faced and deliberately. This applies to ALL of them, from the top to the bottom of our federal, state, and local governments; the corruption is inherent in the structure of the system, which encourages behaviors that are self-serving, and rewards theft with more access to more money…..

“Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives.” — John Stewart Mill (1806-1873)

I don’t think I need to even show any evidence here, as it ample proof of the chicanery prevalent in society is all over the news every day, if one knows where to look, and how to read between the lies….. (not a typo…)  The recent events surrounding the budget mess, have reached a stage where it is apparent, even to the citizens who blindly support anything the politicos say, that there is something wrong with this picture, and serve as a perfect example of what I am implying, nay, accusing them of here. The bickering and obstructionism reached levels that showed exactly how little the people mattered, in relation to the money, and who would have the control of it….. It’s a huge mess, and nobody has any acceptable solutions (so they say….)…

So, what do they do?…. Things get stalled long enough for the Supreme Court to take up the constitutionality of the concept of Gay Marriage, a decision that will have a long-term effect on how our country operates on some levels, and certainly engages the emotions of every citizen with any concern over the issue… Quite distracting, in fact, and to me, a bit suspicious in timing, as it takes the public awareness away from what Congress, and the White House, are up to, which, I assure you, is no good…. at least, not for us, or for the people at large….

SIGH… My outrage at the system is so large it keeps me awake at nights, sometimes…. but, it is so large because the system is, in nature, completely amorphous, with no obvious pieces that can be attacked and destroyed…. Add to that the fact that too few people alive are even aware of the need to do so, and it leaves me with little choice but to rant…. So, life goes on without any real changes, and the rich keep getting richer, while the poor keep on keepin’ on, best they can…. Me, I’m gonna go take a nap…..

“The trouble with Congress is every time they make a law, it’s a joke, and every time they make a joke, it’s a law!” — Will Rogers

A couple weeks ago, a friend sent me a poem, which I included in this section, by a new young poet she found. She searched out a site where he is posting his work, and found another poem to send. It’s good, as is the young poet, who will, I predict, make a mark in the world of literature. I hope you enjoy it, and, use the link to visit his blog site…. Enjoy, ffolkes….

In Poetry

I slept last night
In a cave of shadows and howls

a bear skinned itself
With his razor claws
To reveal a wolf
Eating its pups,
And their eyes burst
Under jaws,
Wet and blind

Red splashed furred skins
Dragged across the damp stone

Followed me like friends
Kept talking to me

I slept last night

the dark man from the cornered place
held  a gun against my neck
And shot me down

Emptied my flesh
Felt the drift-away come up on me
Like a song as they played the pipes
Slowly

Drifted into realms
Haemorraging

In the hard dark cave
Where shadows shriek
I wake again

rise in slow
Shunting movements

vertebrae slipping
Tightly into place

Bending me skyward

Tonight I watched dublin
Snuffed out under a heavy haze

Her lights jaded

Night is here again

Goya’s demons gather
reason crumbles
castles of sand
meeting the tide

some wind blows me
some tumbling entity

some words drop out of me
Unbidden and unmade

build a flesh and soul
with pick and spade

And house me again
In this poetry.

pearls_3

Today’s final old-school pearl is rather special, in its own little way. It’s nine stars, each gem lustrous, all apparently unrelated, until, at one point, one realizes they are all, in at least one way, saying much the same thing. You can decide for yourselves just what that may be. It doesn’t matter at all what your conclusion may be; it will be the right one….

“Philosophy, means, first, doubt; and afterwards the consciousness of what knowledge means, the consciousness of uncertainty and of ignorance, the consciousness of limit, shade, degree, possibility. The ordinary man doubts nothing and suspects nothing.”  — Henri Frederick Amiel

“It is the quality rather than the quantity that matters.” — Lucius Annaeus Seneca

“In those whom I like, I can find no common denominator; in those whom I love I can: they all make me laugh.” — W. H. Auden

“42. Remember that the best relationship is one where your love for each other is greater than your need for each other.” — Instructions for life

“He who fights with monsters might take care, lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.” — Friedrich Nietzsche, “Beyond Good and Evil” IV, 146

“The only way to compel men to speak good of us is to do it.” — Voltaire

“The “beast” is a myth we have created, a scapegoat, upon which we project the image of ourselves we are unwilling to acknowledge. When anyone behaves in a peculiarly unpleasant manner we tend to answer that he behaved “like a beast,” when the fact is, of course, that no beast every behaves so iniquitously as men frequently does… The myth of the beast is perpetuated from generation to generation. The result is a perversely distorted view of the nature of other animals, and a profoundly impoverishing failure to understand our true kinship with the rest of animated nature. So-called primitive peoples have never lost this kinship with other animals… Without the benefit of a Darwinian theory of evolution our technologically less advanced peoples in their creation myths and in their conduct toward the animal world exhibit a far deeper understanding of the interrelatedness of all living things than does so-called civilized man.” — Ashley Montagu,_The Humanization of Man_, 1962

“When nothing is sure, everything is possible.” — Margaret Drabble

“A human being is a part of the whole, called by us Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest–a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty.” — Albert Einstein

Well, there you have it, such as it is. To keep faith with the tenor of today’s post, as set in the intro, I’ll forgo any lengthy farewells, in favor of a bit of brevity here at the end of all pearls, for the day, at least. I will, however, make a strong effort to return tomorrow, with a fresh rant, and, who knows, maybe a new poem. In any case, I’ll be back, to quote a very bad actor turned very bad politician. See y’all tomorrow, ffolkes; that’s a good bet….

“Take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind
down the foggy ruins of time
far past the frozen leaves

circled by the circus sands
with all memory and fate
driven deep beneath the waves

Hajime…. My first task today is to apologize to those blogging friends whose sites I have not visited in the last few days. I’ve been posting, then spending most of the day offline, recovering from, or dealing with the physical issues plaguing me of late. I’ve made a few comments, but, mostly have skipped surfing at all, and made only a few comments. I hope to be back to relative normalcy soon, or, what we call that around here, anyway, so, bear with me in my struggles to find my center/balance, and get back to doing what I wish to do….

Today’s mess was mostly done, save for the final section, which has a short bit to finish. It’s just as well, as yesterday’s events nearly put me in a world of trouble. A young security officer made the mistake of attempting to intimidate me when I showed some anger at a bureaucratic conundrum that had developed during my time out of the house; he is a very fortunate young man, in that I was able to refrain from sending him home in a box, with a massive effort of will. He simply had no clue as to how much danger he was in, so, I was compelled to let him go, and merely lashed him verbally. I then had to walk off the anger, and today, am paying for that in stiffness and pain…. SIGH…. So be it.

That’s probably enough whining for one day. In fact, it’s enough, period. Let’s get on with this mess before I fall into any more chatty, boring episodes, okay? Okay….. Besides, this isn’t as easy as it looks, when I have a very hormonal teenage cat, trying her best to call the neighborhood boy cats to come play, while alternately rubbing up against me for attention in her affectionate state…. It isn’t easy to type with claws in the leg, you know. But, I’m getting it done, with the help of this little Tardis Toy, which works very simply and efficiently. Watch this….

Shall we Pearl?

And Katerfelto, with his hair on end
At his own wonders, wondering for his bread.
‘T is pleasant, through the loopholes of retreat,
To peep at such a world,–to see the stir
Of the great Babel, and not feel the crowd.

My recently adopted policy of working ahead with old material seems to be working okay, for the time being, hence, here is another discussion of morality/ethics and religion from the last day of 2012…. Enjoy! At least you don’t have to listen to any more BS about the elections, or Republicans, or the Hillarity, or Brussells…. Bonus!….

From 12/31/2012:

Forgiveness. How does a person without faith in a higher power obtain this boon? Certainly not from themselves…. I know, if I have done something for which I feel the need, or desire, to be forgiven, then I most likely don’t deserve it, and refuse to give in to self-indulgence. According to the preachers, God forgives all, but damn me if I can see any reason to do so, no matter how ‘merciful’ he/she/it might be. How can anyone expect moral behavior, if even our most grievous sins are forgiven? Because of the promise of reward for compliance, or threat of punishment for refusal to conform? I agree with Albert Einstein, that any such philosophy is not realistic, and certainly not moral…..

“In his private heart no man much respects himself.”

~~ Mark Twain ~~

All of us, without exception, have things we hide inside ourselves, secrets that nobody else will ever be told. Whether it is a memory of an act one is not proud of, or a bit of severe foolishness, or something so shameful that to share it would be to become a pariah, all of us humans have secrets. I would guess that almost all of them are akin to what is described in the first paragraph, to wit: acts that need forgiveness, but do not deserve it. I believe that this may be a method by which one can tell another person’s outlook on religion, for almost all religions are based on this principle, of divine forgiveness. Even though we may do things in life that are unforgivable, the gods, or God, for the monotheistic among us, are so merciful, that they will do so, if you but acknowledge their divinity, and admit they are your higher power…..

It’s a good deal, all in all, if one buys it. Myself, I’m a bit sanguine about it, since I only have the word of the preachers that it is so; there is no real evidence to be found that supports the theory, and the scientist in me wants at least a little bit of proof before accepting something as truth. I’m not going to buy anything just on someone else’s word, or assertion of truth; I’ve been alive long enough to know that doing things like that can only lead to losing something, if only the advantage of self-respect.

“His ignorance covers the world like a blanket,
and there’s scarcely a hole in it anywhere.”

~~ Mark Twain ~~

Wait, I thought we were talking about religion, not the last Republican President….. Sorry, couldn’t resist…. Any who, it all comes back to the basic idea of how we view reality, in terms of the concept of God, or a power greater than ourselves, that is responsible somehow for everything that exists, and thus, for us. By giving away that responsibility, I think, we are showing our own cowardice; I’m not willing to do that, not without more compelling evidence than hearsay.

I’m not blind to the other evidence that many religionists claim as being proof of God and his will; I’ve burst into tears myself at the sight of a particularly vivid sunrise, without knowing why, other than the beauty of it was so arrestingly powerful. I’ve seen good things happen everywhere, in human interaction, and in Nature. I’ve witnessed what priests like to call “grace”, and will admit that such events are not explainable by ordinary means. I’ve also witnessed the other side of existence, where human nature turns dark and cruel, while Nature reveals its own complete indifference for human suffering, and cannot accept that the same entity would dare to assume, or want responsibility for such a wicked universe, even if the balance of good and evil is maintained by the presence of the other.

That assumption is purely human, and thus does not qualify, in my mind, as evidence of divinity in the form of God, by any of the visions held by any of the churches of Mankind. Unless, of course, one goes beyond doctrine, into philosophy, where the above contradictions do not apply, or can be explained by one further assumption. That assumption is a hard one for most humans, as it involves taking responsibility for EVERYTHING that they do, and for everything that happens to them. (Yep, that’s a paraphrase of the basic principle of Karma…) In other words, as Robert Heinlein put it so aptly in Stranger In a Strange Land, “Thou art God.”  I know, it’s blasphemous, but, hey, been there, done that, let’s get past it…. It is the only explanation that fits ALL the facts in evidence, and even if a bit grandiose, really isn’t, because we are, after all, just a bunch of bozos on the bus.

Being God, though, would be a really boring job, the way the job descriptions in all the churches read, and I don’t think I want to take that on, particularly. It may be the only way I can find any forgiveness for those things I’ve done in my long life of which I am not proud, but, since I don’t feel that I SHOULD be forgiven for them, I think I’ll just accept the responsibility, along with the consequence, a certain lessening of my self-esteem, and try to act in the future in ways that won’t make me feel that way…. It really isn’t hard to be good, in reality, as long as you care…. The problem is, not enough people care, or even think about stuff like this….. Me, I can’t help myself…… Caring, to me, is what being human is about; those who don’t care aren’t fully human, and won’t be until they do…..

Risk is critical, we may only sigh,

Again, Again! But, I SWEAR I saw a mouse in here…

Hajime….. Okay, so here’s the deal today. I’m tired, having spent a long, if not particularly onerous night, attempting to garner enough sleep to warrant getting up, Abandoning the battle at about 4:44, according to my little bedside time monitor, I arose, only to remember I had forgotten to get sugar while at the store, and would be seriously short for my first cuppa this morning. SIGH…. Getting old’s a pain, y’know?

So be it. Life’s full of disappointment, and this one doesn’t rank too high on the scale, so, we’ll just ignore the pain (everything’s relative, y’know…. When I’m low on caffeine & sugar, thing can get, for me, a bit strange…), and get on with the slow. Of course, it means we’ll be shortcutting where I didn’t get this done yesterday, (which also had its share of time-altering issues….), so, y’all may as well be prepared for a bumpy road. Can’t be helped, & you’ll get the usual apology note in your email, if you provided it.

All that said, to our common regret, I am sure, we’ll get on with this, before my courage fails. I suppose this means I either have to use one of the Tardis devices, or just fake it, to get us on the toad. Ah, I know, I’ll use my extensive knowledge of cosmic judo, and use a hip-throw…..     As noted in the intro, the archives are to play their part today. Here is a relatively short discussion of one of our favorite delusions, religion, and the tendency of humans to indulge in such nonsense…. Enjoy!…. I did.

From 12/28/2012:

“A desire not to butt into other people’s business is at least eighty percent of all human wisdom… and the other twenty percent isn’t very important.” “You butt into other people’s business.  All the time.” “Who said I was wise?  I’m a professional bad example.  You can learn a lot by watching me.”  — Jubal Harshaw, in Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert A. Heinlein

I would guesstimate that more than 90% of everything I believe about life and the world has its roots in this book by Robert Heinlein, based on the comments of Jubal Harshaw, one of the book’s main characters. Jubal managed to have something to say about just about everything in human culture, and had his own distinct opinion on all of it. Of course, these reflected Heinlein’s own beliefs, but we weren’t supposed to think about that at the time, and had no real effect on anything other than Bob and his friends. The rest of us just appreciated his ironic sense of humor, and the common sense he displayed in such an entertaining fashion.

Medicine, psychology, memory, society, culture, custom, religion and theosophy, politics and political theory, philosophy, military history and structure, strategy, tactics, literature, writing, circuses, carnivals, astronomy, space travel, telepathy, telekinesis, teleportation, weaponry, and a host of other subjects…… Every one of these subjects is part of the story Heinlein weaves, as he creates a figure who embraces the entirety of human culture and history, and attempts to change mankind in a way that can help us to overcome those parts of our nature that are giving us problems, and eventually will lead to our demise as a species. This book, Heinlein’s magnus opus, is his attempt to show humanity the way to save ourselves from our own stupidity and ignorance…..

Sadly, Heinlein is aware also that our fatal flaw is just that…. fatal. His protagonist, Michael Valentine Smith, who offers humanity the salvation of personal revelation, and of personal responsibility, is, in the end, killed by a mob of unbelievers, becoming the same sort of religious martyr as Jesus Christ, with, as Heinlein so aptly shows, the same probable chances of success, i.e., none…. Nothing of what Jesus taught humanity has been incorporated into society; anyone who says it has is delusional. Humanity not only has NOT adopted the philosophy of that great Jewish reformist, but has utterly rejected it, and belittled it, by perverting its precepts, twisting them to suit their own agenda, and acting in ways that are diametrically opposite to what Jesus was teaching.

I defy anyone to provide evidence that what I just said is not true, and invite them to present it here, so it can be discussed. The teachings of Jesus Christ have been corrupted by preachers and priests, politicians, corporate masters, and every other human who desires power over others. The rules of flexibility and love for fellow men that he taught have been turned into obedience to authority, and submission to temporal rulers, as those who wish to control society twist the words, and mangle the concepts that were intended to help in another way.

“Jesus only told half the story. The truth *will* set you free.  But, first it’s going to piss you off.” — Solomon Short

I don’t know about y’all, but I think, even if it does piss me off, I’ll take the truth…..

Fine and Good, Good and Fine

A pig in a poke’s got nothing on me,
cuz I’m as confused as a man can be.
This ol’ world’s got me spinnin’ around
cussin’ and spittin’, a penny for a pound.

Forty ‘leven times since I was a kid, well,
I’ve fallen in love, ‘least too close to tell.
Every damn time, it all went to crap,
Forty ‘leven times I’ve felt like a sap.

‘Course, each time it happens, I forget the last;
why not? I’m havin’ such a blast….
Livin’ in each moment, filled with joie de vivre,
’til it’s all gone away again, nothin’ left up my sleeve.

Don’t want y’all to think I’m sad or blue,
life’s full of sorrow, lots for me, and/or you..
T’other side of that coin, we can be glad,
is joyful love, and that ain’t at all bad.

My road’s been littered with parts o’my heart,
each one colored with trust, which ain’t always smart.
Yet, long as I don’t lose my connection to joy,
I’ll find my own true love, and be a happy boy.

It’s been some kinda fun, even when I’d take a fall,
and doin’ it over makes no sense at all, at all
Day after day, I keep on keepin’ on, as it’s said;
Guess I’ll keep on doin’ that ’til I’m dead.

‘Nuff said….

Hajime….. Oddly enough, I once again have nothing. Rather than re-blog old material, I’ll merely give you what I do have done, and, be done with it for today. I’m not sure what’s going on, but, I seem to have misplaced my muse… I’ll look around today, & see what’s up with that; I doubt seriously reality will worry too much about my absence, just like it ignores me in general. Leelu will be happy, too, as it will free up more time for her…. Cat bonus!

Who knows what the future may bring. I don’t, but, I know what was in the past, and that’s what you’ll get today. One nine-star old-school pearl, naked, as they most often are these days. Skin is good. But, I digress, and must be off, into the Big Blue Room, to do battle with the forces of reality…. Or not, as I prefer to slip through without disturbing the Force. We’ll see how that goes. For now, let’s do this, before it gets any later….

Shall we Pearl?….

After adding penalties, it’s free…

Ffolkes,

“How many northern Californians does it take to screw in a light bulb?”

“None of your f***ing business and have a nice day.”

~~ Curmudgeon Bee ~~

Fish for Dinner

Fish for Dinner

Hajime…. Now, THAT’S the proper pearl to begin the final post for 2015. It took me nearly three days to find it, but, every minute was worth every second…. The critical factor for understanding such an assertion is, simply, I AM a northern Californian. Though born about 230 miles south of where I now reside in the Golden State, I’ve lived north of the Bay for most of it….

Almost needless to say, it also provides me, and, any other potential/practicing curmudgeons, a perfect line for using on Mundanes, in one variation or another, when suddenly confronted with the numerous acts of random, yet grindingly consistent, gross stupidity, in the form of a question, which, by any person with functioning neurons, would be considered rhetorical….

There…. Was that cynical & insulting enough? I hope so, I worked hard to make it so. If nobody is offended, all I can say is, damn! Where did I go wrong?….. If THAT’S not enough, well, all I can say is, y’all had best find your spare brain; this one ain’t workin’….

Hah! Let’s throw in a “Whew!”, as well. I’m done now. Sorry, just had to get that out. I’ll try not to let it break out so vehemently again….. today. I shan’t make any promises for tomorrow; you know how I hate to make promises I’m not likely to keep. No worries, though. I think I probably have enough strange left in me to get through a Pearl, especially one with the natural advantage of landing on a holiday, to either celebrate, sell, ignore, or, explore the meaning thereof, the last of which probably isn’t a good idea today….. I’m liable to, literally, and, literature-ally, go off…. Then, of course, there’s the figurative…. No, let’s not even go there….

I think, perhaps, we should get on with it. What do y’all think? Oh, right. No ‘perhaps’ about that…. Well, I think so, and I’m the one typing here, so, I guess that puts me in the driver’s seat, doesn’t it? Duh…. Okay, then, we’ll have it YOUR way.

Maestro, on with the slow….

Shall we Pearl?….

“The notion that faith in Christ is to be rewarded by an eternity of bliss, while a dependence upon reason, observation, and experience merits everlasting pain, is too absurd for refutation, and can be relieved only by that unhappy mixture of insanity and ignorance called “faith”.” — Robert G. Today’s video selection is the result of a comment yesterday from a friend, who sent me a link to one of his tunes (Thanks!) …. I realized I had not used his music yet; since he is one of my most favored artists, there was no hesitation at all in deciding to include him today. Hell, his song, Pancho and Lefty, is one I’ve been playing & singing myself, damn near every time I play, for about 40 years, or more…. I’ve played it with my BFF, Tommy Tumbleweed, in a smoky, loud, crowded bar, more times than I can remember…. Enjoy, ffolkes… Townes is one of the best poets to ever pick up a guitar…..

Sandclock .jpg

Taking another day off here, ffolkes; fresh rants coming soon…. For now, let’s go back to, oh, a bit more than three years ago, to see what was going on in this silly, yet, earnest mind of mine…..

From 12/2/2012:

“There is one God, but which one is He?”

~~ Smart Bee ~~

Now, this is the proper use of reason and inquiry! Such a small question, made gargantuan by the depth of its insight. Which one, indeed, is the real God? There are as many answers to this question as there are what I like to call “preachers”, for want of a better word (I should maybe try to pick a better one, I suppose….); “preachers” are men, or women, who have decided upon one particular system of beliefs on the subject of divinity as being the correct one, to the exclusion of all the others. In spite of the lack of hard evidence on hand for any of the different belief systems, these folks choose one, and stick to it like a barnacle…. which, come to think of it, is probably what it feels like, after a while….

Depending on to whom the question is put, the answer may vary from Odin the All Father of Norse mythology, to the God of Zoroaster, whose specific appellation escapes me just now. In between you will find God, also known as Yahweh/Jehovah to the those of the Tribe, Allah to the Muslims, and just plain, old God, to most of the Christian sects. There is the voodoo god, Jobu, in the Caribbean; Set, or Bal, or Mammon, or any of the other ancient earth gods;  Ra of the Egyptians; Krishna, and all his incarnations, i.e., Kali, Yama, Ganesha, Maya, and the others in the Hindu pantheon. The American Indians seemed to favor the Great Spirit. Ancient Druids, from the dawn of Man’s history, and, modern Wiccans, follow the Goddess, with gods and goddesses from the Greeks and Romans thrown into the mix, just for fun. The list seems as endless as human imagination…. which it is, since all of them spring from that source.

“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion.
If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”

~~ Smart Bee (and, most likely, the Dalai Lama….) ~~

As far as I know, Buddha never claimed to be a god, and, was, to my mind, not particularly clear on the subject of divinity, as directly related to humanity. The same seems true of Taoism, though certain of its sages seem to hold some of the old Chinese mythology beliefs on Heaven, and the creatures who inhabit that domain, another concept for which there is only imaginary evidence to support its veracity, and its reality. In this way, I see these philosophies as superior to the religious doctrines that purport to worship a deity, as they rely on reason, personal responsibility, and compassion to direct action, rather than fear of reprisal, or hope for reward, as is the wont of religious dogma and doctrine.

This perception of mine may be because I have always thought that the entire concept of a deity is not capable of being described, or understood, if one is to assume that a god is what it claims to be. How can a mortal understand an immortal? There is no common ground, other than the assumption of existence, for which there can be any reason for one to be connected to the other, as we could not comprehend their existence. We, limited to our human perceptions, have no direct evidence of a deity that can be experienced by those perceptions.

Anyone who tells you they do is lying, even if they believe it to be true, unless they can share that experience with another human, directly, with evidence for the senses we possess, not merely for what we wish to be true. Feelings don’t count, nor visions only seen by them, or voices in the head; neither do personal revelations, or religious fevers, or speaking in tongues…. See, hear, touch, smell, taste…. that’s what we have, along with the ability to reason, and our imagination. That is our tool kit; unless one of the tools fits, it isn’t real, to our perceptive ability. Items purported to be evidence that come from imagination are just that; imaginary, and cannot be considered proof of anything other than the naivete of the speaker, and, of any who choose to believe them.

“It is a great advantage for a system of philosophy to be substantially true.”

~~ George Santayana ~~

SIGH…. People are people, though, and they will choose what to believe according to what they feel, most of the time, rather than according to what is the truth, which requires effort to find. It has even been said that humans have a tendency, more often than not, to make choices that are bad for them, just for that reason, that it is too much effort to think their way through to the truth that would ultimately help them. As long as this is true, our species is in danger, from itself, and its own delusions…. Sad, in a species of such promise….

And on the 8th day, God woke up and said “Whew! It was just a dream!”

~~ Smart Bee ~~

Comedy_Tragedy

Dreaming, I wait….

In the most patient moments of rationality
kindness flows smoothly in a special milieu,
fallow thoughts speed first from equality
to give no anxious fever, anger to eschew.

Indignant mothers and step-sons in-law
shall fade simply from brilliant to grey,
intoning ritual dogma, fresh, avid, and raw,
falling, falling, in massive pastoral disarray.

Safety lives not, save brightly in ignorant bliss,
it follows us all, silent and infinitely frail,
foremost too often, soft as a virgin kiss,
alive, always eager, willing, and pale.

Intimate knowledge finds only the bold few
with courage and virtue to gift, unbidden.
No solemn royal version may pass in review,
true love for man, never to remain unhidden.

Sweet feathers of Emily’s hope uplift,
calm, drowsy episodes bursting with light,
With final glad cries we set ourselves adrift,
swimming in the oceans of natural delight.

When sorrow is banished, in ages yet to come,
roots solidly anchored, cold and remote,
Ample supplies of kindness sit silent and dumb,
and the old stranger shrugs on his faded coat.

Dreaming, then, I wait with shadows in the night
aspiring to inspire, a message from the muse’s heart
Never forgotten images, framed in color bright,
tempt me only, grieving, steeped in serenity’s arcane art.
