Gazing into the abysmal mirror of introspection….

Ffolkes,

Well, there’s a switch…. Murphy decided to surprise me today by leaving me alone. As a result, I slept, like the proverbial rock, until after 0700 AM, for perhaps the first time in a decade, if we don’t count those mornings when I did so, but only because I didn’t go to sleep until 3 or 4 AM. I don’t think I’ve slept that much since before my kids were born, 33+ years ago…..

What a treat! Of course, my body feels strange, but, that is just the unusual, and uncommon, feeling of having more than enough energy, for a change. It’s been so long, I wasn’t sure what it was…. thought it was an illusion, at first. It’s actually a good feeling, one I recall having quite often in the distant past, before PTSD and adulthood took away that boon….

Oddly enough, I find that having energy doesn’t necessarily translate into having intelligent thoughts, or brilliant ideas for something to write about, or instantly knowing what phrase will work…. I’m just as fuzzy as if I’d gotten up earlier…. Ah well, I AM a Bozo, so what can I say? And, just because Murphy got me once, by reversing the order of things on me, doesn’t mean he isn’t still out there, waiting to get me again…. the asshole.

Not having any ideas to write about has never stopped me before, and it won’t today, either….. Yesterday, I used the excuse of business out in the BBR to shorten this intro section…. That part worked okay, but, I’m never at my happiest when I have to resort to the archives….. I hate repeating myself, big time. But, then, much of what I end up ranting about is a repeat of one kind or another, so I suppose that’s just a personal quirk that I shouldn’t let affect things as I do. Oops…. there’s that word again….

“Shouldn’t”….. I don’t know about y’all, but a long time ago, I learned a lesson about the word “should”….. It is a truism, and when one thinks it over, it is easy to see that it is a truism right down to the bone, and not really arguable at all; no argument to the contrary of what I am about to relate is valid, because they all veer away from reality and truth….

Simply put, the lesson/truism says, this: whenever you use the word “should” in a sentence, you are relating information that someone else told you. It isn’t something you told yourself, or figured out on your own…. we only do “should” when we learn it from another, and use it as a “guilty” motivation to act a certain way….

In this case, it happens to be something that I DID tell myself, (as seen in the above sentence….)…. but, the need to not let personal quirks affect things is NOT mine…. THAT idea came from someone else, and really isn’t true, when you look at it…. Personal quirks don’t necessarily mean bad writing, but, we’re all taught to not let stuff like that happen, by the myrmidons of society who teach their unwanted and unwieldy code of (im)morality to everyone else with platitudes and lies hidden as metaphors.  No matter what it is, if the word “should” shows up, you can bet some busybody told you whatever it was you used it in relation to, and told it to you long ago, before you knew better than to listen to old fools….

Well, between my back pain (moderate), my bemusement at sleeping so long, and my tendency to ramble, I’ve managed to put together quite a hefty opening section…. a little ranting, a bit of advice, some societal wisdom, and an indictment of the iconic asshole who bothers us all…. not bad for a Saturday morning, I’d say… and, if you will note, I just did say…. Which, all things considered, is probably enough, if not too much, so…..

Shall we Pearl?….

It being Saturday, well, it really don’t mean shit, but, we’ll pretend it does…. So, I’ll tell you that this pearl will be old-school, and since school is closed on Saturday, we’re up the creek without paddles or gum. Nonetheless, I think Smart Bee can do this, so, we’ll give it a shot, and hope for, if not the best, something fairly easy on the eye and mind….

“You’ve got to do your own growing, no matter how tall your grandfather was.” — Irish Proverb

“To get anywhere, or even to live a long time, a man has to guess, and guess right, over and over again, without enough data for a logical answer.” — Robert Heinlein, Time Enough for Love

“Nobody can live in society without conventions. The reason why sensible people are as conventional as they can bear to be is that conventionality saves so much time and thought and trouble and social friction of one sort or another that it leaves them much more leisure time for freedom than unconventionality does.” — George Bernard Shaw

Everybody Tells Me Everything

I find it very difficult to enthuse
Over the current news.
Just when you think that at least the outlook is so black that it can grow no blacker, it worsens,
And that is why I do not like the news, because there has never been an era when so many things were going so right for so many of the wrong persons.

~~ Ogden Nash ~~

Aha…. now I understand the presence, and relevance, of the Voltaire quote…..
_____________________________

The following pearl, of the old-school variety, was originally intended as the beginning of a rant; the first quote, from Jack Kennedy, was so startlingly real, not to mention incredibly arrogant, it stimulated the outrage I need for such treatises….. but, my thoughts on the subject were a bit jumbled at first, then, I saw the next quote, and I realized it would be better to go old-school, as the vitriol and vituperation I would have engendered while writing about such chicanery might have gotten on my clothes, and that stuff NEVER comes out… Any who, here is a group of pearls, all intended, please note, as ironic, or to act as an indictment of those who are mentioned in conjunction with them….

“Private enterprise … makes OK private action which would be considered dishonest in public action.” — John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963)
(This one just enrages me…. It goes to show, though, just how little politicians care about the common man, and how easily they can rationalize and justify their own actions, or those of their cronies, and how easily morality and ethics are tossed out the door in the name of profit and power….)

“If the liberties of the American people are ever destroyed, they will fall by the hands of the Clergy.” — General Marquis de Lafayette, 1789
(Gee, who’d’ve guessed?…. Ah, let’s see…. Adams, Jefferson, Franklin, Madison….. oh, okay….)

“Cutting the space budget really restores my faith in humanity. It eliminates dreams, goals, and ideals and lets us get straight to the business of hate, debauchery, and self-annihilation.” — Johnny Hart
(Tongue firmly in cheek….)

“I am not a part of the problem. I am a Republican.” — Dan Quayle
(Blatant ignorance…. not to mention wrong! )

“This just in from a Nicholas Notifier up north.  Everyone’s favorite farmer and political commentator off the interstate near Chehalis has just come up with the prize line of his career.  “Limit congressmen to two terms.  One in office.  One in jail.” — Jonathan Nicholas’ column in The Oregonian, Friday, March 29, 1991

“Any excuse will serve a tyrant.” — Aesop (620-560 B.C.)

“A neighbor came to Nasrudin, asking to borrow his donkey.  “It is out on loan,” the teacher replied.  At that moment, the donkey brayed loudly inside the stable.  “But I can hear it bray, over there.”  “Whom do you believe,” asked Nasrudin, “me or a donkey?” — Smart Bee

Well, there you have it, a perfectly imperfect old-school pearl of virtual wisdom, chock full of sardonic humor and dry wetness, among other oxymoronic impedimenta…. I like it, and so does Mikey….

Finer memories are unavailable at this price…..

Ffolkes,
Balderdash…. folderol….. bamboozle…. cantankerous….. flibbertigibbet…. They just don’t make words the way they used to…. nor does society offer the same opportunities to put them to use, sad to say….. But, this isn’t why I’ve called you all together here today…. Yes, losing parts of our past heritage is a serious drag, and something society needs to address in the long run, and in fact, there are now bills before the New Congress to that effect…..

This is not, however, the most dangerous change to have taken place in our culture, not when there are still increasing numbers of unemployed, homeless, lawyers being spotted on our streets, in our parks, and in all our public haunts….. Ever since the revolution, when we killed all the bankers,  politicians, and priests, who had been oppressing and terrorizing society for thousands of years, all those law school students were thrown out of college, and have never adjusted to the loss of their future….

The poor pathetic creatures, bereft of any hope of becoming the rich, privileged jackasses they wanted to be, by entering politics, or landing a cushy position on what used to be Wall Street, now known as the Day Care District, wander the streets of our major cities, looking dazed and confused…. Most of them refused the reconditioning offered after the new order was established, still angry at losing all they had studied for, so they are having trouble finding jobs or any stable existence for themselves, as society marches past them into the glorious future we can now expect to see, now that those who were killing us all have been dealt with appropriately….. I always enjoyed the spectacle of those heads on spikes, arranged in straight lines down Broadway in New York…. They were a stirring sight, for certain, especially when they left them with their cigars in their mouths….

On that somewhat disturbing image, we’ll leave this morning’s wish-fulfillment fantasy to its own devices for now, and hope that someday, it will be useful as the start of a real article for some new online magazine, filled with revolutionary zeal, and the promise of a real future for mankind…. And, now, I am off the soap box for the time being…. Hmm, now what?

I’m once more at a loss as to what direction to take, so, I’ll go right to default mode, and call this an intro…. Hey, it has at least four paragraphs, and none of them are what I’d call incendiary, or particularly compelling, even if a bit radical in tone. Around here, that is more than enough, so we’re going with it, because it’s my blog, and I can do what I want…. Nyah, nyah, nyah…. (Even resorting to childish taunts….) Since I can’t think of anything else that would possibly help this to recover, we’ll just dive right in, and see what we can see….

Shall we Pearl?…..

“Yes, this is an age of moral crisis.  Yes, you are bearing punishment for your evil. But it is not man who is now on trial and it is not human nature that will take the blame. It is your moral code that’s through, this time.  Your moral code has reached its climax, the blind alley at the end of its course.  And if you wish to go on living, what you now need is not to return to morality — you who have never known any — but to discover it.” — John Galt

Well, if ever I’ve seen a better segue into a discussion of the primary problem facing society in the modern world, I not only wouldn’t have known it, I wouldn’t have admitted it, because this is as good as it gets, in that respect. The character who said it, John Galt, is, in the novel by Ayn Rand, a social philosopher, critical of the society in which he lives, which the author blames on socialist idealism. I found the book, Atlas Shrugged, in which Galt plays a part, to be a tour de force of delusional thinking, an entire series of novels, all of which promote the author’s own brand of conservatism, and, to my mind, idiocy.

In order to write these novels, the author had to make certain assumptions, about socialism, about human nature, and about society, and, though the character of Galt SOUNDS as if there is some wisdom in what is said, such as in the above statements, it is based on an erroneous assumption, which, naturally, makes all subsequent conclusions suspect. The assumption made is that socialism will always lead to the society as described in the books, and that assumption is one that isn’t necessarily supported by any real evidence, in the real world….

All of which makes me smile, as what is said above, in the quote by Galt, is pretty much absolutely true of today’s society, which is in imminent danger of self-destruction due to the lack of any morality among the Beloved Ruling Class, and the 1%, who are the real culprits, fully responsible for the state of our culture…. Galt, and Rand, merely make the wrong system their villain when they target socialism. Parasitic conservatism is the real culprit in today’s world, for which there is ample evidence. Hell, our culture, the way it exists today, is perfectly suited to such parasitism as practiced by those elite groups, as the greater percentage of mankind buys into just about anything they are told, as long as they hear it on TV from a guy in a suit….

“Those who voluntarily put power into the hands of a tyrant or an enemy, must not wonder if it be at last turned against themselves.” — Aesop (620-560  B.C.)

Considering how long ago Aesop said this, one would think that most of humanity would have learned this lesson. One only need look around today’s news headlines to see just how little this piece of advice has been heeded by the general run of mankind. The politicians and bankers are running amok, struggling and fighting amongst themselves for the best seats at the table of public feasting, studiously ignoring the futile noises from the people from whom they are stealing, as they are busy bickering with their neighbor over each new privilege….. SIGH…..

I’m not sure where I’m going with this anymore…. I wanted to strike out against those assholes in power, who don’t give a shit about anyone but themselves, but, they’re too amorphous, hidden within the myriad of folds in the costumes they hide in, that make them look just like everyone else…. It’s really too bad that one cannot see into a person’s heart visually; it would save us all a lot of trouble if we knew from the start that these assholes were lying to us…. Ah well, since I never underestimate the power of human stupidity, I have to figure people would find some way to pull the wool over their own eyes, and fall for the same old shit, anyway…. It almost makes me glad I’m old, and won’t have to put up with it all much longer…..

“And then, last but the reverse of least, there plunged in all the people who think they can solve a problem they cannot understand by abolishing everything that has contributed to it. We all know these people. If a barber has cut his customer’s throat because the girl has changed her partner for a dance or donkey-ride on Hampstead Heath, there are always people to protest against the mere institutions that led up to it. This would not have happened if barbers were abolished, or if cutlery were abolished, or if the objection felt by girls to imperfectly grown beards were abolished, or if the girls were abolished, or if heaths and open spaces were abolished, or if dancing were abolished, or if donkeys were abolished. But donkeys, I fear, will never be abolished.” — G. K. Chesterton, The Flying Inn

National Poetry Month Icon Pic    One of my favorite WordPress sites for poetry of a unique nature is 1XPad, or OneTimePad, written by Doug, located here:  http://1xpad.com/  . He challenged me to join the National Poetry Month Challenge, at this site:  http://www.napowrimo.net/   By registering at the site, each blogger commits to publishing a poem every day in April; people from all the participating sites will see it, and join in the community discussion…. It sounded like a good challenge, one that might help me get a bit more disciplined about my poetry; the process by which it leaks out of my head could use an upgrade, metaphorically speaking…. So, tomorrow, this section of the Daily Pearl of Virtual Wisdom will contain a new poem, by me, for as long as I can come up with something I’m not ashamed to post…. We’ll see how it goes….

In the meantime, here is one of my older poems, from September of 2012….. it seems apropos, somehow…..

For The Blind Poet, Embraced

I sit to open a vein, exposed in public places,
happy to be written, judging by the faces.
None can see the price so willingly paid,
at the feet of imagination is that cost weighed.

Still shadows of reality shine quite as well
to hide all the bleeding as if under a spell,
while visions and fantasies vie for attention,
hoping to win once-hoped-for final mention.

Technology may or may not rue its day
never knowing or caring its part to play.
All the precious moments of inspiration
Fall ever short of our own imagination.

Okay, so, I’m lazy, so sue me…. I was cruising through some old school Pearls, and came across three that demanded to be included in today’s post…. Alright, so it was merely a request…. but, it was made in a firm tone of voice, so I’m going with demanded…. Any who, it turned out to be a bit long  but each one is fully appropriate, and all are quick and easy reads, as each one was intended as an early morning motivator for people at work… These are from sometime in 2006…..

Year end sale…

Ffolkes,
When I started out this morning’s offering, I had intended to remain seriously random. But it seems the sub-conscious me is always there, scheming and plotting. Since most of the plots seem to bear more of a resemblance to scams than schemes, I was lulled into a sense of complacency. Hence the following offering. Again I ask you, which of these is not like the others? Which of these things just isn’t the same? Which of these things is not like the others? Come on and play our game! (To be sung to the tune of….)

COMMAND:  A suggestion made to a computer.

Did you hear they removed the word gullible from the dictionary?

This Job Is A Test, It Is Only A Test. Had it been an actual job, you would have received significant compensation, some words of thanks and some form of recognition such as raises, promotions, and bonuses for a job well done. Yes, This has been a Test!

Perhaps we invented God to take the burden of self-judgment from us.

And if we did, how’s that workin’ for ya?….

Feel free to reply; via email, via snail mail, via phone, or just in the relative privacy of your own mind…and of course, y’all take care out there….

Out of the East…

Ffolkes,
“Interesting” is only the beginning. As humans, we tend to get bored when not stimulated by a challenge of some sort. If the world does not provide one, we are perfectly okay with making it up. Something about the perversity of human nature, I suppose, though it seems a bit dramatic to me. Ah well, ours is not to reason why, etc., except it is, or should be, do and die, not do or die.  Cuz that’s what is at the end of the road for all of us.  Kinda puts us on the same playing field, eh? Here…. I’m feeling less than Occidental this morning……

“Character is doing the right thing when nobody’s looking. There are too many people who think that the only thing that’s right is to get by, and the only thing that’s wrong is to get caught.” — J. C. Watts

Always we hope
Someone else has the answer
Some other place will be better
Some other time it will all work out.
This is it.
No one else has the answer
No other place will be better
And it has already turned out.
At the center of your being
 You have the answer;
You know who you are and what you want.
There is no need to turn outside
For better seeing.
Rather abide at the center of your being
For the more you leave it
The less you learn.
Search your own heart and see
the way to do is to be.
— Lao Tzu

Y’all take care out there…..

Just plain brutal….

Ffolkes,
Monday’s can be that way, even the best of them. I’m not certain, at least in my own case, just where the motivation to get up & get moving is coming from.  Routine is powerful enough to take us in to work, but what then? Coffee only goes so far, then something stronger must come into play, or the week just goes all to >@#%! (Supply your own curses)  It can be difficult to find a substitute; drugs are illegal, and so is theft. So what do we do? We rely on luck!…..

“Indifference is the strongest force in the universe. It makes everything it touches meaningless. Love and hate don’t stand a chance against it.” — Joan Vinge

Life is short. Get it right.

Those who can, do. Those who can’t, write.
Those who can’t write go to the State Department (of Mental Health).

That’s the ticket….motivation means caring…..Recently on the radio, Hoyt touted a book, and challenged the listeners to send in our own version of what it was about, to wit: describe your life in six words. I liked mine…

“Looked for love, found it everywhere”……

Six on the button, eh?

Y’all take care out there…..

There, housekeeping done, and Pearl constructed…. let’s see how it reads….. Go ahead and let the Pulitzer Committee they won’t need to meet again today…. Actually, it’s not too bad, considering the state of my mind….. Tomorrow is Monday; I’ve a lot to do before traveling tomorrow night, and much of my available RAM is being used up in calculations in re: the trip.

Oops…. I’m starting to use computer metaphors now; I’d best bring this to a rapid close, lest we reach critical mass…. See ya…..   Y’all take care out there, and May the Metaphorse be with you…..

In the spirit of plain fare….

Ffolkes,
Well, here we are again…. I’m not sure what it means to be up so early again, but, given that I fell out at 7:15 last night, it DOES mean that I got 11 plus hours logged in bed. Can’t claim that I got that much sleep, as it took what seemed like hours to fall asleep deeply enough to warrant the name, but, I did pound the pillow that long, so I must’ve needed the rest, such as it is for me these days. I only wish that I felt good enough to say it was worth it…. alas, I can’t do that…. SIGH….. Life’s tough, then you die… So be it.

It sounds as if I’m feeling a little fatalistic this morning, not to mention the cranky pants. S’okay, though, I’m in the mood for it…. I kind of wish someone would come pounding on the door with some kind of complaint, just so I’d have someone to let this out on. It’s probably a good thing they’re not, though, because it’s not considered being a good neighbor to litter the hallways with the corpses of your neighbors, especially so early in the morning….

But, enough about me…. When this mood strikes, the writing usually sparkles for me; crankiness seems to stimulate my funny bone somehow, and all sorts of good stuff pours out. Let’s hope that holds true today; otherwise, well, the consequences could get ugly. If the mood turns to ranting, there’s no telling how many bodies could pile up before I’m done. Or, it could turn pompous on me; I hate that, as I end up sounding supercilious and smarmy, as pomposity will tend to do to one. My only fear is that it doesn’t turn all emotional; it’s probably cathartic to leak tears as I type, but it’s uncomfortable as hell, and the head filled with fluid is miserable….

Now that I’ve stretched out this intro into almost four paragraphs, and have said absolutely nothing, I can see it’s time to go for a dive. I managed to download a new copy of Smart Bee yesterday, and it worked fine last night when I installed it and took it for a test drive, so I’ve got my primary resource back, and am content in that respect. As to the writing, well, time always tells the story, as the Doctor would say…. Shall we Pearl?….

“Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods.” — Albert Einstein

It may have come to your attention that I tend to speak, or write, in a manner that indicates that I know what is Truth, and what is Knowledge, and that my opinion is certain. And, in this, you’d be correct; my self-confidence is pretty healthy…. I would like to point out,  however, that the laughter of the gods rings in my ears a lot….. just like it does almost every second that a politician speaks. I, however, can hear the laughter, and make adjustments accordingly, per the dictates of reality. They don’t hear it at all….. Of course, they already know that what they are saying is a lie (they are, after all, politicians, and it’s what they do….), and thus wouldn’t admit it if they did hear it…..

One reason for my confidence, aside from a perfectly normal, loving set of parents (can’t stress enough how important that is in allowing kids to grow up feeling good about themselves….), is that I am smarter than your average bear, AND, can prove it. See, almost everyone feels like they are better than average; it amazes me how some of them can come to that conclusion, but it’s true.

Ask any number of people you like to tell you if they are average, or above average, or below…. I will bet you serious money that almost every one of the ones you ask will say they are above average. Yet, arithmetic will deny that assertion, as it is purely impossible for ALL of them to be so endowed….. Those of us who ARE above average usually will question our own level of expertise, if only to verify our own position on the scale, because we know for a FACT that AT LEAST half of the people are below average. That is, after all, the definition of average….

It is an unfortunate fact that being below average tends to cause resentment toward those who are not; this is a root cause of may of our society’s ills, though not one easily considered, by those above, or below the line. None of us, gifted, average, or mundane, are comfortable with the differences between us in our perceptive abilities; it doesn’t seem fair, and part of our nature rebels at that, silly as it is, considering the nature of reality. But, it is so, and there is naught to be done about the simple fact that some ffolkes are smarter than others. It doesn’t mean they are better, nor does it mean they are stronger, or more fit to survive. As one great philosopher, whose name escapes me right now, has said, “There is no evidence yet to be seen that intelligence has any survival value.” (I THINK it was Arthur C. Clarke…. but might have been someone else…. I’ll let you know when it comes to me, or Smart Bee shows it to me again…. it doesn’t really matter, it’s still the truth…..)

“To a Europe exhausted by nearly two centuries of religious wars, [Isaac] Newton’s works were first and foremost a message about God; that He did not behave in a capricious or arbitrary fashion, in response to either His will or human prayer, but in accordance with absolute, unwavering, and humanly discoverable laws of nature which governed him and all his works. He had become the infinitely perfect Clock-Maker, his works fathomable by the human mind.” — Forrest MacDonald

As I’ve made abundantly clear previously, I don’t believe in God…. well, that isn’t entirely accurate. Let’s just say that the God that religions all  describe seems to me to be too much like a cranky, dyspeptic old man, and not enough like a god, to suit my perceptions of reality. But, let us suppose that a God did create Man, and ask ourselves why He would create such a nature, giving us such variable characteristics, knowing the problems to which it would inevitably lead? I’ve spent a great deal of my life having to hide my intelligence from most of those I meet, since revealing it always produces the aforementioned resentment. This has given me an idea of the answer to that question…. at least, a possible one.

“Be content with your lot; one cannot be first in everything.” — Aesop (620-560 B.C.)

We exist, in the mind of God, as a species. Individuals are less important in defining the nature of Man than is the entire species, yet it is our individuality that makes us each what we are. So, it suggests to me that there is some purpose to this bell curve on which all of our abilities can be shown to exist. That purpose, to my mind, is this; none of us, quick of mind, or slow-witted, is very well suited to survive on this planet. Other animals are faster, stronger, more dangerous, and show a greater ability to deal with their environment than do we. So, why are we given intelligence, since it doesn’t seem to serve much purpose, in any manner that will help to ensure our survival as a species?

Well, it seems to me that a God, one with the kind of sense of humor and irony that I would think would be well-developed in such an entity, would think it a grand jest to make us learn to depend on each other. In order for mankind to survive, we will ALL need to be involved…. and that means that the resentments we each may engender in the others must be set aside, and we must learn to appreciate the qualities we have as individuals in order to achieve the kind of harmony that such a God would insist upon in a creature of His devising. What a grand joke it is, too! The smarts can’t make it without the dumbs, and vice-versa, and the necessary changes in attitude to achieve such harmony are essential, if we are to achieve our potential as a species….

“How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?” — Sherlock Holmes (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle), Sign of Four

Just an idea, but, I think it makes sense…. it certainly makes more sense than the divisive, elitist crap that most religions serve up. People aren’t special just because they believe in a particular version of God, or a particular church, or anything. They only become special when they put aside all that sort of disharmonious claptrap, and try to understand, and learn to appreciate, those qualities in others that really count, such as loyalty, honesty, bravery, tolerance, and a willingness to see the best in our fellow man….

When someone comes up with a vision of a God who makes loving our fellows MORE important than loving Him, or for goodness sake, worshiping Him, then maybe I’ll consider adopting it as part of my world-view. Alas, the men who run the churches (and they’re all men, too…. what’s up with that? Sounds like another subject to explore some day…..) only want us to agree with them, because it gives them power over us. You see, preachers are merely politicians in the larval stage…. and we all know what THEY want, don’t we? Yep……

“I think he’s a few pipes short of a church organ.” — Smart Bee

Before The World Was Made

If I make the lashes dark
And the eyes more bright
And the lips more scarlet,
Or ask if all be right
From mirror after mirror,
No vanity’s displayed:
I’m looking for the face I had
Before the world was made.

What if I look upon a man
As though on my beloved,
And my blood be cold the while
And my heart unmoved?
Why should he think me cruel
Or that he is betrayed?
I’d have him love the thing that was
Before the world was made.

An Irishman is not drunk as long as he can hang onto a single blade of grass and not fall off the face of the earth.– Smart Bee

Makes me glad to be at least part Irish…. 🙂  Actually, I just like it because it made me grin when I read it, and because the visual image is so wonderful…. I can just see myself, or, Oscar Wilde, or George Shaw, lying on the ground somewhere, fearfully clutching at the grass to keep from going into orbit….. brilliant!…. Just thought I’d share…..

Any who, in looking for a last pearl for this section, I realized that the above section, regarding God, and human nature, could have been condensed into a shorter, more succinct expression. Actually, I realized that I had already written that shorter version, many years ago, (about 33 of them…. I was 29 or so….) when I formulated my own philosophy, Peruaosophy…. (Perua = pearl, osophy = the study of, in Greek…). None of the other philosophies I had explored had matched my own experience, precisely, and I was still searching for one that did so, when I decided, hey, if Descartes and Socrates could have their own, why can’t I? Hence, the following, which I haven’t posted in some months…. I find it to be a good thing to review periodically, as it is chock full of everything I hold to be true, and important in life…. Feel free to comment on any axiom you wish to discuss, and…. enjoy!

Peruaosophy

The wisdom of pearls…
(The world is my oyster; which way to the pearls?)

Axioms

1)  I think I am; that’s close enough.

2) The nature of the Universe is Change.  Unpredictable, innovative transformation of Reality is the Norm. If you have a problem with this, you’re in for a rough ride in Life.

3) Thou art God, you know.  Let’s do lunch.

4) Excellence is its own reward.

5) Girls think differently.  So do boys.  Don’t fight it.

6) Axiom #2 X axiom #5 = And God so loved the world, He said, “Quit whining!”

7) Do your Duty.   Respect Life.   Honor the Truth.   Share your Love.

8)  Go back.  Everything you need to know is in the first seven axioms.

And there you have it…. this is what I’m all about, ffolkes…..   😉

Well, it’s another fine mess I’ve created here, isn’t it? Actually, I’m kind of proud of today’s effort. I’d hoped to have a poem ready, but it seems to have gotten stuck after the second stanza, so it must still be percolating, or simmering, as the case may be. Maybe tomorrow…. In the meantime, here’s hoping you enjoyed today’s Pearl, and hopefully, had a thought or two in response…. That is, after all, my entire purpose here….  Y’all take care out there, and May the Metaphorse be with you…..

Synchronized tumbling pomegranates at last….

Ffolkes,
Acting normally seems to be a problem for me, which, in itself, is nothing particularly new; I’ve always been considered a bit tetched. It’s a family thing….. But in this case it refers to trying to act normally in a physical sense. Yesterday, being the first day in four that I felt approximately physically normal, (as close as I get these days) I tried to do normal things, such as staying up in the afternoon after my visit to the library.

What I accomplished was to fall asleep at 7:30 pm, practically nodding off in my chair as I tried to listen to a ball game. So, feeling much like a cranky five year old who didn’t get a needed nap, I trundled off to bed before dark, and slept, fitfully but asleep, until a bit before 5 am. I guess I was tired…..

But, the reward is that today I’m again fairly normal, all things considered, so we’ll take our blessings as they occur. Sleep, it has been said, is a weapon, so what say we go slay a few crafty oysters for their pearls, eh? I think that sounds like a grand idea…..

“Education belongs pre-eminently to the church … neutral or lay schools from which religion is excluded are contrary to the fundamental principles of education.” — Pope Pius XI

I was surprised to see this in print, as it is an idea that I don’t think the Catholic Church really likes to publicize. Pius XI was pope from 1922 to 1939, so this becomes an even more important slip of the tongue. It has long been obvious to me that of all the Christian sects, outside of Fundamentalist zealots, Catholicism is the most oppressive to its constituency, and their assumption of control over those folks begins at a very early age. The earlier the better, in their eyes…. young minds do not have the defenses against crap that one picks up as life goes on, and they priests all know this, being, as they are, perfect examples of how well the system has worked for millenia.

So, as soon as children are able to stand up and speak on their own, they are started in catechism, a deadly form of brainwashing that has been perfected by over 2000 years of practice. Rote memorization of scripture is substituted for logical thought, and children are taught that obedience and submission are preferable to introspection and independence. In other words, they are taught to be good little Catholics, who would accept what a priest told them even if confronted with the proof of it being wrong at the same time. It is a policy that is best shown by the mere fact that millions and millions of Catholics actually believe that a priest is the best authority on love, man/woman relationships, and marriage, when in fact, they have no direct knowledge of any of those subjects……

Fortunately, this idea was rejected by the Founding Fathers of this country, who had had enough of religion meddling in their affairs, and set up our government to keep the two institutions separate…. Thank God!….  🙂   (Yes, that is ironic, or in this case, sardonic…..)  We certainly dodged a bullet that time!…..

“It is simply untrue that all our institutions are evil, . . . that all politicians are mere opportunists, that all aspects of university life are corrupt.  Having discovered an illness, it’s not terribly useful to prescribe death as a cure.” — George McGovern

Pot, kettle…. George makes an interesting jump in his thoughts here, and it isn’t surprising, as this is a perfect case of using logic like a club rather than a knife, as well as the irony of him, a pot, calling the kettle, politicians, black. I tend to hold suspect any statement by a politician as to the nature of politics and those who indulge in it; it’s just a bit self-serving, don’t you think? He may have a point, though it is moot, mostly, as having any truly invested politicians, even if only 10% of all of them, would act as a brake on the actions of the rest.

I just don’t see either of these. There aren’t 10% of the pundits in office one can point to as an honorable man, or woman, and I see no brake on any of the stupidity in common practice in any public institutions. There certainly are no uncorrupted institutions that I can see in the Federal or State or Local governments; if you know of one, feel free to point it out…. He does mention universities, but I’m not sure exactly where that fits in to his argument, so we’ll just give it its due, and ignore that one….

Then he makes a jump, from politics to medicine, a chancy proposition even with good arguments at hand, and very specious when none are even offered. He assumes (always dangerous) that people will see institutions and politicians as a disease, AND that we, the people, would kill the patient as our first choice of treatment. Sounds almost Freudian, doesn’t it? It is typical of a national politician, such as McGovern was, to completely mistrust the American people; all of them are disdainful of the average American, and wouldn’t trust them to tie their own shoes without a proclamation.  It is not natural for those who are corrupt to respect those from whom they are stealing…..

Now, some might say that he, McGovern, was as close to a truly honest politician as we have seen in recent times. He was the darling of the hippies of the time, as he was one of the few Senators who publicly opposed the Vietnam conflict (though his voting record didn’t reflect that absolutely; trust me, I was there….). He was considered by the counter-culture to be the savior, the answer to Johnson, and Nixon, and the establishment. So, what happened in that election?…. Nixon won in a landslide, showing just how deeply ignorant the voting public was at the time….

“Those who voluntarily put power into the hands of a tyrant or an enemy, must not wonder if it be at last turned against themselves.” — Aesop (620-560 B.C.)

As I mentioned, I was there, and it seemed as if the vote was not so much an endorsement of Nixon and his policies as it was a vote against hippies and the culture they represented, a very frightening vision to the average Joe at that time. Sad, but typical of American politics, which hasn’t made any sense since it began over 200 years ago…. I don’t expect it ever will…. until people learn the following lesson from the Buddha, and learn to think for themselves, rather than just going along with the drivel falling from the mouths of the talking heads….

“In the sky, there is no distinction of east and west; people create distinctions out of their own minds and then believe them to be true.” — Buddha

“It matters if you don’t just give up.” — Stephen Hawking

It’s hard to say just how inspiring this is; it is off the scale, if one knows anything about Mr. Hawking. Here is a man who is considered to be the most revered scientist of the latter half of the twentieth century, one who is currently working on a Consolidated Theory of Universal Energy that would tie together all of the abstruse branches of science into one homogeneous grouping, and in the process explain how the universe is put together. If successful, it will be the crowning achievement of human history, and can conceivably bring us to the brink of a new Golden Age. His IQ is so powerful, no test we have devised can measure it….

He is also a man who suffers from severe physical handicaps. His body is small, weak, and unable to move about independently. His systemic problems also make it difficult for him to talk. So, he designed a wheelchair and computer system that allows him complete movement, and enhances his communication with others to the point where he has overcome all of his supposed challenges, and has lived for decades beyond what his doctors ever believed was possible for someone with his physical makeup.

His entire life has been one of meeting, and overcoming, such challenges, so the above statement assumes an entirely different status, becoming not just a valuable practical piece of advice, but a statement of the victory of the human spirit, and a testament to human will…. He is truly humanity’s finest example of what a human being can achieve with the proper attitude toward Life, no matter what challenges may be encountered along the way…..

“Whose little body lodg’d a mighty mind.” — Alexander Pope (1688-1744) — The Iliad of Homer, Book v, Line 999

Why, all the souls that were, were forfeit once;
And He that might the vantage best have took
Found out the remedy. How would you be,
If He, which is the top of judgment, should
But judge you as you are?
— William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Measure for Measure — Act ii, Sc. 2

More gibberish from a master of same…. Another long winded, obsucure way to say, “Careful, or God’ll get ya!”…. Sorry, but I just get so burnt when I hear people gush about Will all the time, holding him up as the greatest English author of all time. What a crock!….

I guess it goes a long way toward explaining how easy it is for people in general to be fooled by good publicity…. and toward explaining why politicians can get away with such outrageous BS…. all they have to do is quote from one of Will’s nonsensical plays, and everyone sighs, and thinks, “Oh, he is so smart, and so well-educated! Let’s vote him into office, and give him the keys to the treasury….”   Sounds pretty typical to me…..

“Generally, he who occupies the field of battle first and awaits his enemies is at ease.” — Sun Tzu

Here is an example of the type of information that “The Art of War” is chock full of…. and perfectly shows how the ideas he professed were applicable to all situations in life, not just war. In essence, this says that preparation and timing are the most important factors to a successful conclusion, of a battle, or business, or even love.

When one has completed preparations and is in place to act, success is much more likely than arriving late, and without the proper materials, attitudes, and enthusiasm. Like all true wisdom, it is a simple idea, and relatively simple to execute, if one is disciplined in their thinking, and in translating thought into action…. Simple, but exquisitely effective…. This one is a true Pearl of Real Wisdom, and worthy of the name….

I love it when a plan comes together…. Some sleep, acceptable levels of pain, good coffee, and some cooperation from Smart Bee, and voilá, a Pearl! Not a bad one, either…. Now I’m not sure what to do the rest of the morning, as I got done with this pretty quickly compared to many mornings. Ah well, since things have progressed so well thus far, I suppose it is best to just trust them to continue in that vein, and get on with the rest of the day. Y’all take care out there, and May the Metaphorse be with you…..
