Absent Life

Life was here….

Hajime….. Today’s Pearl doesn’t exist. Oh, I know you see what looks like one, but, it isn’t what you think. A week or more of insomnia has taken its toll, & I don’t even have the chutzpah to go look for an archived Pearl to re-blog. Instead, I’m taking the day off, and will return tomorrow, with a full Pearl worth reading…. Well, as much as they ever are. For today, you get the simple seven star old-school pearl I have ready, and, that’s it…. Sorry, but, it will have to do…. In fact, we’ll get to that right now, so I can start my day off…. Here’s how that looks today….

Shall we Pearl?….

“Have the courage to live. Anyone can die.”

Even duct tape won’t help now….

Ffolkes,

Staring into the abyss is not easy without coffee, but, that’s what I’ve been asked to do today…. Well, perhaps that’s a bit dramatic, but, it does give you the “look and feel” I was trying for, if you’ll pardon the retreat into Appledom…. I’m pretty sure, since that phrase has been legally identified by some court or another, it’s okay to use it in general speech….

If not, well, screw ’em, because it’s already done, and I’m not about to start again, just because Apple doesn’t like me using their words….. As we’ve been known to say on previous occasions, when just such a complaint has arisen, fuck them if they can’t take a joke…. hard, or soft, your choice, I don’t care….

There, the first nonsensical paragraphs are done, now we get to the plain speech paragraph, which is MUCH easier, believe me…. When I come up with an easy-peasy kind of subject, which talking about Apple always makes so simple, producing such literary flotsam becomes almost automatic…. But, then, by now, just about anything at all wouldn’t surprise MY readers in this space….

In spite of the difficulties we face each day (Damn! There’s another of those royal “we”‘s! Gotta watch that….) to get this intro done in a timely fashion, without it becoming an ordeal beyond all endurance, I think I’ve managed to endow my audience with more than just a few formats and/or incarnations, if you will, of this introductory section, enough so that they’ve learned not to expect anything in particular, but just wait to see whatever manifests on any given day…. It’s also safer that way, in a physical sense…. less chance of explosions….

Even the explosions have reached the point of becoming mundanely routine, I suppose…. That’s what happens after the first several hundred of them….. I don’t know if it is normal to be so blasé about such volatile material, but, it’s certainly normal around here, and I’m not about to start justifying or explaining at this point…. Nobody but a regular here would understand anyway, so, it’s all moot…. Of course, if we ever get to the point where the blog is starting to get some more attention from a wider audience, I suppose I’ll have to consider a few changes, to meet the demands of the public eye….

Don’t hold your breath on that one, though, because I’m pretty stubborn, and not about to make too many changes, just to suit readers…. My curmudgeon training wouldn’t allow that anyway, as it is catering to the wishes of others, and that sort of pandering is NOT going to happen on my watch…. People are responsible for their OWN minds, and beliefs, and I don’t allow any BS in that respect….

I am responsible for what I say, and what I believe, but, not for anyone else’s words, or their ideas….. and trying to blame me for what someone else may think, even about my own words, is not only NOT going to alter my behavior, it could conceivably piss me off….  Whomever THAT happens to fall upon may just end up regretting they ever spoke…. or, for that matter, regretting they were ever born….

Hmm…. I see that I’m beginning to show symptomology of a need to rant, which isn’t surprising, as I’ve not indulged myself in that respect for a week or more, not in any detailed, fresh sense…. Soon, I’m sure…. For now, though, I’m going to go with my impulses today, which are random, and not well understood, even by me…. In fact, I really don’t know, at this juncture, just WHAT will happen from now on…. I have deliberately avoided thinking about it…. So, whatever occurs below will be as much of a surprise for me, as it is for you….. The only thing I know for sure is that the Wise Old Pine Cone took another day off, having overindulged himself radically at the ball game a couple of nights ago; he’ll be back in a day or so, with new pictures of new adventures to share…. For now, though….

Shall we Pearl?….. In fact, let’s begin with a two-fer….

“Zen Buddhists do it because they don’t want to do it because they want to do it.” — Smart Bee, showing off

“We had the sky, up there, all speckled with stars, and we used to lay on our backs and look up at them, and discuss about whether they was made, or only just happened.” — Mark Twain (1835-1910), Huckleberry Finn

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In lieu of a fresh rant, which is not imminently forthcoming (Don’t ask why; the answer would be TMI…. I say that just as if we had not already reached a point of no return in that regard….), here is an older rant, from some time in 2012, on a typical issue, i.e., the BRC and their shenanigans…..
“He who imitates evil always goes beyond the limits of the example, whereas he who imitates what is good, always falls short.” — Confucius
Perfect! If ever a quote could be applied to fit one group of people, this one would; it fits the folks who occupy elected office in this country like the proverbial glove.
Ooh! Ooh! Here’s another one…
“Ignorance: When you don’t know something and somebody finds it out.” — Jethro Burns
Okay, that’s a good start…. Now, we all know that politicians lie to us…. It’s what we’ve taught them to do, by our calm acceptance of all the other lies they’ve told, from the very beginning. We expect them to lie… then, when we catch them at it, there is this huge public outcry, as if it had never happened before. Sometimes, the behavior of the American public toward the political beast reminds me of a shark…. to wit: no memory of the past to slow down their willingness to rush into dangerous situations….. For millions of years, sharks and dolphins have lived together in the oceans. For just about all that time, whenever a shark attacks a dolphin, it gets killed, unless the dolphin is injured in some way, or, it is a baby inadvertently left alone. Always, if things are even, the shark dies, because the dolphins are faster swimmers, but, more importantly, they’re smarter.
After millions of years, you would think the sharks might learn to let them alone, but, they don’t, which is evidence of their lack of ability to learn. The American voting public has the same problem…. they never learn to expect to be lied to, and always seem surprised to learn that their elected officials are, shall we say, less than perfectly honest? It, quite frankly, drives me nuts…. What is it about people that does that to them? Why are they so UNwilling to use the mind that (presumably) sits between their ears, rather than just carrying it around from toilet to toilet, which is all most folks seem to do with it? (Almost forgot it was a question….) I wish I knew….
“There is one way to find out if a man is honest–ask him. If he says yes, you know he is crooked.” — Groucho Marx
I’m starting to feel a bit of anger, actually, (Surprise!) and I have a hard time not letting it out on the voting public, the idiots. But, it really isn’t all their fault, as the people who run for office are the ones who are actively imitating evil, and, obviously, exceeding the limits of their example. And the voting public can’t help never being able to quite reach the good for which they reach. This is why I get angry about it…. The folks who run for office tell the public they are going to work for the people when they are elected; we all know they are lying, but we elect them anyway. Now, how stupid is that? Pretty stupid, in my book…..
On the one hand, the stupidity displayed by the politicians is deliberate, in its adherence to principles of theft and prevarication; on the other hand, the stupidity displayed by the voting public is, perhaps, not deliberate, but at minimum, misguided, and, ultimately, just as evil, in placing its trust in evil people. In the dispassionate view held by the universe, stupid is as stupid does, and the sentence of death is the same for both types of stupidity, deliberate and unconscious. It (the universe…) doesn’t care about why, it only looks at results….
What can be done about this? Not a damn thing…. Not only do I find that most people are unconsciously stupid, but they are stubborn about it, even when it is clear how being stupid is hurting them. Rather than use their minds to find a new way of dealing with these issues, they retreat into platitudes and dogma, and run right back out to vote for another idiot who promises them manna from heaven, or, more accurately, from Washington D.C. If confronted with their idiocy, they become even more stubborn, as they are unwilling to accept they might have been wrong, usually refusing to either examine any evidence of being wrong, or, denying its existence altogether.
The politicians, who choose to live in stupidity, by lying and cheating and stealing from their own people, don’t even WANT to choose otherwise. Why should they? They’ve got it easy, with a ready supply of host bodies on which to practice their symbiotic parasitism, a body that not only accepts all their lies, but encourages them to even further depredations with their complete acquiescence with whatever the politicos want. All the politicians have to say is that the public is in danger, from this, that, or the other…. The public will then allow them to do whatever they choose, as long as they’re fooled into feeling safe from whatever fictional fantasy they have been told is dangerous…..
“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift; the rational mind is faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.” — Albert Einstein
It’s an interesting spectacle to observe from the sidelines, but it arouses in me a strong feeling of sadness, with the anger underlying, as I watch, day after day, as so many millions of foolish people get taken advantage of by a few assholes. It definitely makes me want to buy a gun, even though I would only use it if pressed; I have a feeling I may get pressed some day, if I continue to make noise about all this.
I’m fairly well protected thus far by a lack of notoriety; the BRC and the PTB aren’t going to worry about me until I have an audience a lot larger than a couple of hundred folks, of which perhaps fifty regularly read my work. If what I am saying began to gain popularity, and was being read by millions, I’d be in danger; until then, I’m as safe as I can make myself with the tools at hand… which, if I say so myself, are not entirely inconsequential…. If I said any more, I’d be giving away my precautions, and that wouldn’t do, so, just rest assured… I am ready to deal with anything short of assault weapons, with what I have on hand…..
“Many, if not all, of my presidential opponents are certifiable idiots.” — Miriam Defensor Santiago — The World Almanac and Book of Facts, 1993
See? I’m not completely alone! Actually, if you pay close attention, you will note this was uttered by a politician, about their peers, so it really doesn’t count as support of what I’m saying here. What, exactly am I saying here? Hmm, okay, since I’ve already written about 1200 words or so on this, it’s a good place to wind it up…. so, here goes…
Ffolkes, you are being lied to, daily, and hourly, by those who have been elected to office to look out for your interests. I hate to tell you, but those folks never intended to do anything of the sort. So, it would be a good thing if everybody in this country would OPEN THEIR FUCKING EYES AND GET A DAMN CLUE!!!!!….. I don’t think I can say it any clearer than that….. That’s all, for now…..
“Ignorance kills daily. “– Smart Bee
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It’s been a while since I posted this poem by Emily D….. It is one of my favorites of hers, though I’m not sure exactly why…. Maybe it’s the length, which is about four times her usual measure….. with Emily, the more, the better, in my book….

I measure every grief I meet

I measure every grief I meet
   With analytic eyes;
I wonder if it weighs like mine,
   Or has an easier size.

I wonder if they bore it long,
   Or did it just begin?
I could not tell the date of mine,
   It feels so old a pain.

I wonder if it hurts to live,
   And if they have to try,
And whether, could they choose between,
   They would not rather die.

I wonder if when years have piled–
   Some thousands–on the cause
Of early hurt, if such a lapse
   Could give them any pause;

Or would they go on aching still
   Through centuries above,
Enlightened to a larger pain
   By contrast with the love.

The grieved are many, I am told;
   The reason deeper lies,–
Death is but one and comes but once
   And only nails the eyes.

There’s grief of want, and grief of cold,–
   A sort they call ‘despair,’
There’s banishment from native eyes,
   In sight of native air.

And though I may not guess the kind
   Correctly yet to me
A piercing comfort it affords
   In passing Calvary,

To note the fashions of the cross
   Of those that stand alone
Still fascinated to presume
   That some are like my own.

I had not originally planned, when I got up today, to go with older material… It just sort of worked out that way. To forestall any whining from the peanut gallery about cheating, here is a fresh old-school pearl, randomly chosen, for no good reason at all, at all…

“In the beginning was the word. But by the time the second word was added to it, there was trouble. For with it came syntax…” — John Simon

“I have realized that the past and future are real illusions, that they exist in the present, which is what there is and all there is.” — Alan Watts

“It is a difficult task, O citizens, to make speeches to the belly, which has no ears.”– Plutarch (46-120 AD) — Life of Marcus Cato

“Ignorance is no excuse.” — Smart Bee

“It is hard to free fools from the chains they revere.” — Voltaire

“Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before,” Bokonon tells us. “He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way.” — Kurt Vonnegut, “Cat’s Cradle”

What though the field be lost?
All is not lost; th’ unconquerable will,
And study of revenge, immortal hate,
And courage never to submit or yield.

 — John Milton (1608-1674) — Paradise Lost, Book i, Line 105

All things considered, this will do…. Of course, one must remember, this is the place where Peruaosophy comes from, where the very first axiom gives the root/core idea that, to me, MUST be understood, if one wishes to get through all this with a minimum of fuss, to wit: “Axiom #1 — I think I am. That’s close enough.”

For today, it certainly is….. See ya, ffolkes….. More pictures tomorrow, I promise…. which I don’t do lightly….

Horrible examples of overt penitence….

Ffolkes,

“I don’t know, but I’ve been told, if the horse won’t pull, you’ve got to carry the load.” — Grateful Dead

I am uncertain, at this point, which of the Dead’s songs this line came from, but, it certainly fits the events of THIS morning around here…. I’m up late, for me; it’s now 5 AM, & I’m just getting started, after about a half-hour of attempting to wake up enough to even get coffee poured, much less get any writing done….. Beset on all sides by obstacles to getting this Pearl started, (don’t even THINK about getting done yet…), I’m “dappled, and drowsy, and ready to sleep”…. to quote another song (Simon & Garfunkel, I believe….)….. Well, maybe not ready to sleep, but, not quite ready to be awake….

It’s a fortunate thing, for me, anyway, that I had completed a rant yesterday, after reading the news…. Some egregiously avaricious Senator had to come out with more bullshit to try to convince the public the XL Pipeline disaster should be allowed to go forward, and a new climate report, by some agency of the current administration, came out with their report, which, though sufficiently scary, is merely a repeat of other reports that were recently released by climatologists connected to a WORLD organization…. Put together by some group commissioned by the White House, it parrots much of the material that was first noted in the report released by the UN study on the same subject, earlier this year….

Now the White House has jumped on the climate change wagon, trying to convince the public that the administration actually intends to live up to the campaign promises by the potUS to address those self-same issues…. It is, unfortunately, more than merely a day late, and way more than a dollar short of what is needed to actually FIX anything…. But, hey, they’re TRYING, right? Doesn’t that count? In their eyes, it’s supposed to count enough that you’ll actually believe them when they tell you they will…

That, of course, is on YOU, and ME, for electing them in the first place, but, I guess, given the lack of viable choices from which we have to choose, I suppose it is to be expected… Even if it isn’t, it’s another case of too little, too late, and Bob’s your uncle, once again, for society…. That is, IF I have correctly translated that eminently British epithet correctly…. (Willow? Is that correct usage….)

To clarify, no matter WHAT the White House, or any other government agency says or does in re: climate change, they really don’t understand it, or give a shit about it, and will say just about anything to distract the public from the issue, so they may continue their primary function, of looting the treasury….

SIGH… There I go again, ranting away in the intro, just as if it was the right place for it…. One of these days, I’ll find the correct method for getting this done without all the CRAP it puts me through…. Until then, all I can do is all I can do, and THIS, sadly, is all I can do today….

It DOES mean, however, that I’ve reached a point where I can dump this, and get on with the rest of today’s effort…. Thank goodness, too, as I was about to get really, really weird, more than I think you would be able to deal with…. Dodged a bullet there, we did….

Shall we Pearl?…..

“But is such a thing fit to be discovered to the people? shall I do such an unworthy Act?  Ah! my pen falls out of my hand.  Yet my desire to help posterity, overcomes; for perhaps from this gleaning as it were, greater and more admirable inventions may be produced.” — Giambattista Della Porta, Natural Magick

http://www.sfgate.com/business/energy/article/Senator-Ukraine-unrest-shows-need-for-Keystone-5456253.php?cmpid=hp-hc-nationworld

A blatant, deliberate mix of misguided ignorance, implied corruption, fear-mongering, and outright lies perpetrated by a $250,000/year paid lackey of the energy lobby, er, government is the primary focus of this article. The statements made by this Senator, who, no doubt, has a DIRECT interest in getting the pipeline completed, so he can cash in on the lucrative lobbyist money being thrown around by the companies wanting to build the damn thing, are so egregiously biased, it’s a wonder he ididn’t fall over from the imbalanced weight, in spite of his desperate grip on the podium.

His justification for wanting it to happen? Because Putin and Russia are in conflict in the Ukraine, and we wouldn’t want anything like that to happen here, just because we were too wimpy to build the pipeline…. That’s it, I guess… You, too? I’m still waiting for the rest of the reasoning, that seems to be missing….  I’m having a hard time making the connection with this one, since I don’t have any particular fear about that issue to be fanned…. and I certainly don’t see any way the two issues are connected in Reality….

http://www.sfgate.com/news/science/article/Fed-report-Warming-disrupting-Americans-lives-5455672.php?cmpid=hp-hc-nationworld

Here, though, is an issue that is firmly entrenched with Reality, tied in a relationship so close, there are NO degrees of separation… Indeed, global warming/climate disruption (the identified new term for that process we’ve initiated with our idiotic, self-serving obsession with carbon-based fuels and the internal combustion engine, along with the attitudes that allow that obsession to permeate all levels of our society), is an issue connected to our very existence.

The worst part of this report, mild and non-accusatory though it may be in tenor, is that it is merely another repeat, of the same information that has been available since the 1960’s, when the environmentalism movement began, & we, the public, first began to take note of the coming changes….

That’s correct, you heard me…. the 60’s…. I went to college starting in 1968; by that time, the basic groundwork of assessing the damage caused, and the potential harm to come, had already been completed, and available to read, for some years.

The green movement was at a grassroots level, but,  after a comparatively short time, it was EVERYWHERE, in essence; all of the information that is in this article was already basic knowledge by 1968, readily available to anyone, though not commonly known among the mainstream, of students, or the public at large….

So, I figure, what this article speaks about is an issue that has been around for, let’s count…. If we start at 1964, (during the Free Speech movement in colleges across the country) that makes it an even fifty years….

Fifty years…. This stuff has been around fifty years, at least…. I know this, for a fact, because I WAS THERE; I READ ABOUT IT, AND HEARD ABOUT IT, IN A NUMBER OF VENUES. There were hundreds of people, all standing right next to me when I heard it, or in the room, reading or listening to the same public radio/TV report, or otherwise exposed to the same information, so, it’s pretty well verifiable….. and, has been so for all that time….

I cannot say whether society’s failure to take the warnings of impending problems seriously was the result of a conspiracy, by those who feel they’d be harmed by this getting out (there are a large number of candidates who fit those parameters….), or whether the public hasn’t the wit to comprehend such scientific information (probably true for at least half the public…. but, then, the other half COULD explain it to their peers….), or whether we’re all just too disorganized, individualistic, and stubborn to pay attention to what is important, preferring to focus on what we FEEL, or WANT to be true….

My best guess is a combination of all three are true… Whatever the ultimate reason, I think we’d BETTER pay attention to this issue, as a society; moreover, it had better happen as close to NOW as it can…. or, we aren’t going to have the time, knowledge, or resources to be able to fix what we’ve broken….. Our parent’s aren’t going to be able to pay the damages, either, so, the planet, our landlord, isn’t going to be very happy, I’m certain….

In defense against any further stimulation of my own depression, here is a viewpoint, on living well, I penned a while back, which gives us at least a chance to find a way to figure out how to not feel so bloody bad about all of this; in the long run, this can only help….

We’re going to need all of our wits about us, if we have any chance at all to survive our own foolishness…. our lack of true understanding of the Universe, and how it’s supposed to work will eventually eliminate us from this plane of reality, if we don’t figure out the correct answers, and pretty damn quickly…

From 7/15/2012:

“Don’t ever become a pessimist, Ira; a pessimist is correct oftener than an optimist, but an optimist has more fun — and neither can stop the march of events.” — Robert Heinlein, Time Enough For Love

I suppose one could say I am pessoptimist, a word I have just coined to help me conveniently explore another facet of the duality of existence. I watch society, with both anticipation and trepidation, both of which are justifiable when dealing with something as capricious as human behavior. Reality itself is enough of a problem to deal with, given its wildly unpredictable nature, but the universe doesn’t care at all that it is a frightening experience, just to breathe and open one’s eyes to the chaos that surrounds us.  Reality marches on, regardless of our opinion of it; since we have the choice, why not look at the brighter side, eh?

It’s the pessimist in me that sees all of humanity’s flaws; the optimist sees all the beauty that we CAN create when we so desire. What’s difficult is, one never knows where or when the beauty will surface, whereas the flaws make themselves as obvious as dog poop on the shoes, on a daily, sometimes hourly basis…. The pessimist in me knows this, which is why I view each moment rushing at us from the future with a certain small degree of justifiable fear.

Fortunately for me, the optimist in me knows this about Reality; fear is always balanced by that aspect of duality which is inherent in the nature of all that exists, which dictates that whatever takes place has an equal chance of being the kind of experience that brings joy to my world, as it does to create pain. So much bad happens in the world, it can be hard to slough it off; it can come at us unrelentingly, like physical pain from a broken nose, or problems with the DMV….. But, one joyful perception can easily balance the scale…. and will even make us glad for the negative, since it provides the contrast that makes the positive so much sweeter….

“For everything you have missed, you have gained something else, and for everything you gain, you lose something else.” — Emerson

SIGH… I guess all one can say is, I’m glad that I have the choice, even if making that choice can be a problem in and of itself…. One must remember that the Universe is, no doubt, proceeding as it should, so I’ll just keep my eyes, and options, open….

********************************

Read the articles, ffolkes…. Think about them, and pass your thoughts on to others, even if they’re bozoid, like mine; that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, you know…. In any case, we are all of us, and by that, I mean everyone on the damn planet, going to have to grow up, learn how to accept reality, and yield to the laws of the universe, which we (well, SOME of us…) have been ignoring for a long time…. In the Court of Universal Life, there is no appeal, no do-overs, and no pity…. You obey the laws, as they are, or you die…. It’s that simple….

Me, I’d rather live, so, I’m going to do my best to see that the assholes who don’t believe any of this, but habitually act in ONLY their own self-interests, DON’T get their way, thus, saving us from waking up one final morning, dead…. or something worse…. to be alive, but no longer human….

So be it…. gigoid has spoken…..

As is my habit, when I find myself without any idea of what kind of poem to include, I turn to my favorite poet(ess), knowing I can always find what I seek, or, if nothing else, something worthwhile, that will suit our (sorry, MY…. gotta break that habit, of using the royal “we”….), my purpose…. Today, Emily seems to end her poem with a metaphorical allusion to what we do here…. or not…. Regardless of my delusional hopes, please enjoy!….

Arcturus” is his other name

“Arcturus” is his other name—
I’d rather call him “Star.”
It’s very mean of Science
To go and interfere!

I slew a worm the other day—
A “Savant” passing by
Murmured “Resurgam”—”Centipede”!
“Oh Lord—how frail are we”!

I pull a flower from the woods—
A monster with a glass
Computes the stamens in a breath—
And has her in a “class”!

Whereas I took the Butterfly
Aforetime in my hat—
He sits erect in “Cabinets”—
The Clover bells forgot.

What once was “Heaven”
Is “Zenith” now—
Where I proposed to go
When Time’s brief masquerade was done
Is mapped and charted too.

What if the poles should frisk about
And stand upon their heads!
I hope I’m ready for “the worst”—
Whatever prank betides!

Perhaps the “Kingdom of Heaven’s” changed—
I hope the “Children” there Won’t be “new fashioned” when I come—
And laugh at me—and stare—

I hope the Father in the skies
Will lift his little girl—
Old fashioned—naught—everything—
Over the stile of “Pearl.”

~~ Emily Dickinson ~~

Aha…. I get it now… So, it’s not about Pearls, but about “Pearly Gates” or a “stile of “Pearl”, in Emily’s mind…. So, too bad, so sad, my bad….. but, it’s a nice poem, isn’t it?….

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Having thus disposed of the hardest part of these Pearls, we come now to my salvation…. or, at least, my partial redemption, which translates as the last section for today…. I guess, actually, we’ll leave the redemption up to the preachers, and not worry about trying to fit into the small little round hole they are always trying to fit my hexagonal mind into…. I keep telling them it won’t fit, but, they’re bound and determined it will….
In any case, I think, today, I’m not even going to tell Smart Bee what I’m looking for; we’ll let the inherent nature of Universal Entropy have its head, and let SB pick out whatever strikes its fancy…. Should be interesting…. and, at the very least, you won’t have had to try to unravel any mysterious concatenations of my inner demons, which is always a bonus…
“C’est la vie, C’est la guerre, Say no more.” — Smart Bee
“Nothing is more damaging to a state than that cunning men pass for wise.” — Francis Bacon
“The cruelest lies are often told in silence.” — Robert Louis Stevenson, “Virginibus Puerisque”, 1881
“The idea of absolute freedom is fiction. It’s based on the idea of an independent self. But, in fact, there’s no such thing. There’s no self without other people. There’s no self without sunlight. There’s no self without dew. And water. And bees to pollinate the food we eat… So the idea of behaving in a way that doesn’t acknowledge those reciprocal relationships is not really freedom, it’s indulgence.” — Peter Coyote
“People have to talk about something just to keep their voice boxes in working order so they’ll have good voice boxes in case there’s ever anything really meaningful to say.” — Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Breakfast of Champions
“It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument.” — William G. McAdoo
“Character is that which reveals moral purpose, exposing the class of things a man chooses or avoids.” — Aristotle
Well, that was close…. I almost couldn’t find anything to close this out with any dignity, or elegance, or any other adjective of a positive nature… Well, other than a very strange quote from Zippy (what else is new?)…. In the end, I managed to find Aristotle at his finest, instead, at just the right moment…. Serendipity is alive and well, and happily surprising people coast to coast…. Well, maybe not, but it’s a nice thing to hope for…. and, it did come up with a decent pearl, so, back off…. Just kidding….. We’re done here, and a damn good thing….
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well…. I’m at a loss for anything to say, which, as we all know, isn’t likely to last long, so, I’ll take this opportunity to just tell you, as required by law, that we’ll be back tomorrow…. Of course, this means you are allowed to begin the process of arming yourselves adequately beginning today…. More kidding, of a half-serious nature, but, accurate in one sense…. We’ll see y’all tomorrow, ffolkes, rain or shine, Armageddon or not…. as long as the internet is still there, I’ll be posting…. so, see ya, ffolkes….

Braided sable wigs stimulate abnormally well…

Ffolkes,

I’m uncertain as to what possessed me to get up even earlier than usual today, but, here I am, at 0457, coffee already in hand, ready to sit down to assault another piece of paper…. No, that isn’t quite accurate, is it? We’re going to have to come up with a whole raft of new clichés to use, since very few of us are using paper anymore, until we are ready to print whatever we have written. It’s kind of sad, really, as I had a very close relationship with pen & paper, for many years. But, life goes on, and we must learn to adjust to whatever the future brings, even if we don’t always like the changes we see….

As I’ve proven already, I can blather with the best of ’em; I don’t think I even need to demonstrate my expertise, other than to point out any of the entries here for the last two-plus years. Just in case you don’t believe me, hang around a little while, you’ll see it again….. I could, of course, jump right into a rant, but, the last few days of that seems to have exhausted what I have to say, if only for the moment; I’m not currently feeling much outrage….. I have yet to look at the headlines this morning, which may explain that lack of curmudgeonly affection (or is it affliction?…. ah well, who knows, or cares?…..), but, for now, I’m clear of any intent to throw insults or epithets, deserved or not…..

What do I intend? Well, that’s classified….I have decided that it is a matter of national security, and needs to be protected from casual use or divulgence.  What? You object? So what? Object away, I don’t care…..  If the government can refuse to tell us something we believe we have the right to know, and justify it with a “classified” claim, then I can do the same….. I don’t care, any more than they do, if y’all don’t like it; you’ll just have to accept it, because, like the BRC, I’m not giving y’all any choice in the matter…..

The only difference is that I’m not elected, so that isn’t hanging over my head…. but, then, it doesn’t seem to bother them all that much, either, as they know that the fools who put them in office will buy the same old story every time, and put them BACK in office, no matter how many times they lie, or cheat, or even how many times they get caught lying or cheating… It actually drives me nuts, watching the American public keep re-electing the same dishonest assholes every time they vote….. The voting public is like sharks, with absolutely no recent memory at all to keep them from acting on impulse….

I note here that once again, I have begun to rant, before I even get started…. SIGH…. It’s a gift, I guess…. What the hell…. I think we had better get on with it, before things get wonkier than they already are….

Shall we Pearl?…

“I’m completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.” — George Carlin

One can always count on George to cut straight to the heart of a matter. His particular genius gave him the vision to see society, and people, in such a way that he was able to express what the common man felt, fearlessly. No subject was verboten, and no public figure escaped his regard; his target was ignorance, and arrogance, and entitlement, and bigotry, and racism, and power-mongering, and every other human vice….If he saw it, no matter who displayed it, it became a target, irrespective of who might become the victim of his scorn…. You’ve gotta love a man who tells the truth, no matter what, especially when he makes it palatable through humor….

As I noted in the intro, sort of, I’m not up to ranting effectively today; the reason for this is not readily apparent, but, since I don’t really care, either, it’s all moot. Like it or not, I’m going old school again, shooting this time for a Carlinesque group of pearls, that will fill the bill in place of a well-deserved, but absent, rant from me…. Let’s see what SB can do for us, shall we?….

“Amazing how mad some people get when someone makes them think.” — Smart Bee

“You’re either part of the solution or part of the problem.” — Eldridge Cleaver, 1968

“You really have to be careful of politicians who have no further ambitions: they may run for the presidency.” — Harry S. Truman

” If you have a weak candidate and a weak platform, wrap yourself up in the American flag and talk about the Constitution.” — Matthew S. Quay

In the beginning, God created the Earth and he said, “Let there be mud.” And there was mud.
And God said, “Let Us make living creatures out of mud, so the mud can see what we have done.”
And God created every living creature that now moveth, and one was man.
Mud-as-man alone could speak.
“What is the purpose of all this?” man asked politely.
“Everything must have a purpose?” asked God.
“Certainly,” said man.
“Then I leave it to you to think of one for all of this,” said God.
And He went away.

— Kurt Vonnegut, Between Time and Timbuktu”

“I am an agnostic; I do not pretend to know what many ignorant men are sure of.” — Clarence Darrow

“Philosophy is questions that may never be answered. Religion is answers that may never be questioned.” — Smart Bee

Okay, it’s a little choppy, but, it got to shore without sinking…. and, it’s all tax-free!…. Unless, of course, one allows it to tax their patience….

As it turns out, not ranting is a good thing, today…. I just spent a bit of time perusing the headlines for this morning, where I found the most controversial article to be one registering a complaint by Jack Klugman’s son, stating his belief that the Emmy’s award program was bad/evil, or at least misguided and shallow, for choosing to have a tribute to Cory Monteith (whoever he was…I mean, I know he was a young actor who committed suicide, but, that’s all I know of him…. He had no major films or TV shows, though he did have a few kudos; moreover, he had no Emmy awards in his lifetime…) rather than for his dad, (who won several Emmy’s over his 50 year career in TV and movies….). This is the story with the highest degree of emotional content that was posted today, as far as I could tell….

See what I mean, though, about NOT ranting?…. We are witnessing a singular dearth of heavy news, which, like not getting mail in envelopes with windows, is preferable to the alternative…. a front page full of controversy and danger for the world, in this case…. No matter, though, as we have a default position to which we can retreat, and suffer no loss of quality of life…. Well, no loss capable of measurement,  anyway…. Any who, all that aside, here is a random, harlequin pearl, picked by SB, with no parameters to speak of… It’s just the way it is, such as it is….

“Money is the god of our time.” — Heine (1797-1856)

“If you wish to make a man your enemy, tell him simply, You are wrong. This method works every time.” — Henry C. Link

“Don’t knock the weather; nine-tenths of the people couldn’t start a conversation if it didn’t change once in a while.” — Kin Hubbard

“In certain trying circumstances, urgent circumstances, desperate circumstances, profanity furnishes a relief denied even to prayer.” — Mark Twain

“Every man is as Heaven made him, and sometimes a great deal worse.” — Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) — Don Quixote

“Extreme remedies are very appropriate for extreme diseases.” — Hippocrates (460-359 BC) — Aphorism i

“Although war is cruel and brutal, it is also dangerous and stupid.” — Yakko Warner

There are times, such as this, when I think I would do well to let ALL of the groups of pearls I post be picked by this method…. Every time I leave out the parameters, I end up with the finest pearls that can be found; they do shine, don’t they?…. Maybe I won’t commit suicide, as my sense of honor demands now and again….

Don’t worry, ffolkes, nobody, myself included, really has a good grip on my sense of humor; I only know it’s there, and it saves me, daily, from the horrible alternative life I’d lead without it…. Let’s see what it’s been up to today….

Okay, well, somehow, it got done. As noted above, it’s choppy in places, but, hangs together over the course of time, so, it will do for now…. I’m using my newer, travel comp today, so it may take a while before it gets mailed to the email group (data needs to be transferred from one file to another, but, one is on my computer, and one is in the Internet Cloud, and I haven’t been able to figure out an easy way to do it… Later, I will do it the hard way, just to get it done, but, for now, it will be online, at my domain address, gigoid.me….)…

Lots of flavor left in that carburetor….

Ffolkes,
Four or five years ago, if anyone had told me that the scariest thing I’d ever seen in my life would manifest itself every morning, in the guise of a blank sheet of paper, I’d have laughed, quite a lot….. Now, I see exactly that frightening sight, every day when I sit down to write this nonsense, experiencing waves of panic and anxiety, over whether or not I’ll find anything worthwhile to say. Much of the time I end up discussing my fear, or lamenting the dearth of ideas with which my early morning brain has to offer; this fear often leads to some pretty deep BS, and occasionally, a decent piece of fictional meandering…. Most of the time, however, is spent composing paragraphs like this one, full of personal, useless information, good only for those keeping score, i.e., nobody…. not even me….

I don’t know why we’ve never been raided; I’d have thought that, by now, one of the neighbors would have complained about the moaning and screams that often escape during the stunt portion of the show. But, nope, the authorities have, thus far, ignored our little operation, in spite of the frequently seditious material that gets written and displayed here. I suppose the correctly constructed sentences, with relatively correct grammar and punctuation throws them off a bit…. As we all know, if a message is presented in a certain way, or offered by certain parties on TV, it doesn’t have to be true for people to buy into it, no matter how outrageous, or untruthful it may be….. In fact, they (the BRC…. you know, politicians…..) count on this very fact to ensure their continued profit as the keeper of the keys to the treasury.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to rant now…. I’m not sure I’ve got one in me today. Even this James Joyce-style stream of consciousness stuff isn’t going very smoothly, at least not from this end….. I couldn’t say how it’s coming across to y’all….. which is a problem for us bloggers. It would be nice to be able to watch people’s faces as they read my work; it would tell me a lot about how well, or, conversely, how badly, it was constructed, and whether or not it is having any effect at all, in terms of stimulating cogitation and/or conversation…. Garnering comments is always a good sign that what I wrote affected someone, and I love the dialogue with other bloggers from around the world…..

I’ve blathered and meandered long enough, I guess. Three paragraphs, chock full of nothing much. but for immaterial comments, and space-filling pomposity, are all I care to write, and more than I should make ffolkes read so early in the day… But, perhaps they won’t see it until later, so, that won’t wash either…. Shoot, I can’t seem to get anything right today; it might be best for all of us if I just crawl back into bed, and not take any more chances today….. I have a feeling that things could get quite sticky….. If nothing else, I’ll be walking on eggshells all day, waiting for the other shoe to drop…. I’m going to dive now, as I think it might be safer in the water…..  Shall we Pearl?…..

All last month, I tried to post my own poetry each day, to meet the April Challenge of the National Poetry Writing Month…. With the (extensive) help of my archives, I managed to do so, even coming up with 18 new haiku…. but, now, I’m in the mood for somebody else’s poetry…. So, we’ll go with an old favorite of mine…. enjoy!…..

Columbus
Once upon a time there was an Italian,
And some people thought he was a rapscallion,
But he wasn’t offended,
Because other people thought he was splendid,
And he said the world was round,
And everybody made an uncomplimentary sound,
But he went and tried to borrow some money from Ferdinand
But Ferdinand said America was a bird in the bush and he’d rather have a berdinand,
But Columbus’ brain was fertile, it wasn’t arid,
And he remembered that Ferdinand was married,
And he thought, there is no wife like a misunderstood one,
Because if her husband thinks something is a terrible idea she is bound to think it a good one,
So he perfumed his handkerchief with bay rum and citronella,
And he went to see Isabella,
And he looked wonderful but he had never felt sillier,
And she said, I can’t place the face but the aroma is familiar,
And Columbus didn’t say a word,
All he said was, I am Columbus, the fifteenth-century Admiral Byrd,
And, just as he thought, her disposition was very malleable,
And she said, Here are my jewels, and she wasn’t penurious like Cornelia the mother of the Gracchi,
she wasn’t referring to her children,
no, she was referring to her jewels, which were very very valuable,
So Columbus said, Somebody show me the sunset and somebody did and he set sail for it,
And he discovered America and they put him in jail for it,
And the fetters gave him welts,
And they named America after somebody else,
So the sad fate of Columbus ought to be pointed out to every child and every voter,
Because it has a very important moral, which is, Don’t be a discoverer, be a promoter.~~ Ogden Nash ~~

When I leave for Europe, one of my plans for this blog is to post pictures of wherever I’ve been that day, in London, Paris, Dublin, wherever. I got a new camera, and have been experimenting, and think I’ve got it set up so the pictures I take can be worked with on the computer easily, after adjusting the size of the pictures the camera is set to take… The first batch I took were HUGE, taking up several pages of space, so I had to figure out what the correct setting was; I think I’ve got it right now. The picture below should stand as proof…..

Apocalyptic seashell fire sale blues….

Ffolkes,
A gloomy mass of clouds lined the horizon, promising rain in the near future. Beneath them, a line of rolling dunes stretched eastward, leading to a high wall of mountains in the far distance. Closer, perhaps only two miles distant, sat the caravansary where the night would be passed, safe behind the walls separating the trees and water from the desert all around. The camels lining the trail, impatient to get to the water they could smell, shifted and groaned, wanting to be off. But Ahmed waited, continuing to scan the distance to the oasis with a sharp gaze.

Rumors of vicious Tuareg raiders attacking caravans had circled the bazaar in Alexandria before their departure, three days past, and Ahmed had no intention of allowing his group of merchants and their wares to become loot for the Tuareg campfires to celebrate that night. His complement of mercenary guards, well-paid to assure loyalty, were spread evenly through the caravan, disguised as merchants, but with weapons close at hand in case of trouble. As his keen eyes continued to watch for any movement or disturbed birds that would betray hidden groups of raiders, he smiled, congratulating himself for his foresight. “Let them attack,” he thought to himself, “we shall give them a swift journey to Hell’s Gate!”  Turning to his second, he nodded once, and the command to move passed swiftly down the well-dressed line of burdened camels, until the entire caravan once more trod slowly toward the caravansary in the near distance.

Well…. that was different. This passage was brought to you by the fine folks at Imagine, the fantasy and fiction marketplace down on Highway 29. gratis, as an example of what may be found in their immense catalog of storied beginnings and exciting endings. They’re reasonably priced too; I got this one for free, just because it was more than three days old….not a bad deal, considering the short story I’ll get out of it should bring in some decent change, provided, of course, I can find a buyer for it in today’s competitive market. Until I get that finished though, let’s get on with today’s Pearl, or Pearls, as the case may be…..

In our society, the Republicans set out to prove that the Democrats can not be trusted to run the government. And the Democrats set out to prove that the Republicans can not be trusted to run our government. The real problem here is that both the Democrats and the Republicans have come up with something which is absolutely true and perfectly correct. This means that the people get to pull some sort of horrible trick on themselves and live with their choice for four years.–No attribution given…

I’m sorry there is no attribution for this, because I’d have liked to shake that person’s hand. The truth of this proposition should be obvious to even the hard to convince, for it has been proven time after time, in every election in my lifetime, and if things don’t change, will be true for as long as it takes to finish the end-game scenario we have been hurtling toward for a long time. It’s kind of like the weather….everybody talks about it, but nobody ever does anything to change, or control it.

Our society has, by all the information available, effectively sealed the fate of our species, by refusing to acknowledge our true place in the ecosphere, instead choosing to assume that the elitist attitudes fostered by Christian mores is fact, and that the rest of creation is ours to do with as we please. This blindness to the truth has brought us to the brink of species extinction, and it won’t be much longer before what we have done so far cannot be reversed. In fact, there is ample evidence that we reached that point in the latter decades of the 20th century, and the final solution is not far off now.

It’s too bad, too….. we had such promise as a species. Poetry, philosophy, art, all of our most creative characteristics have not been sufficient to keep the assholes among us from fouling our own nest, and it is now too late to do much about it, other than continue to fiddle while Rome burns around us…….

“Mother Theresa epitomizes for me the blinkered charitableness upon which we pride ourselves and for which we expect reward in this world and the next.   There is very little on earth that I hate more than that.” — Feminist Germaine Greer

I’m not sure why Ms. Greer is identified as a feminist; it seems rather superfluous in this context. Her sentiment, though most likely very unpopular with the average run of folks, makes me want to say, “YES! At last, someone says it out loud!” That will no doubt bring me some flak as well, but, so be it.

I’ve always thought that it takes a very condescending nature to be as falsely selfless as Mother Theresa. She must be one of the most horrible people to be around that I can imagine. Can you imagine having to listen to her endless judgments and smarmy, self-serving, overweening pride in how pious she believes herself to be, on a regular basis? I’m afraid I’d become rather homicidal in short order; I don’t deal well with self-satisfied, judgmental folks, who have nothing better to do than tell everyone else how uncharitable they are in comparison to themselves. Makes me want to bite them, hard.

I’ll bet the Popes love the fact that she buries herself in various poor ghettos around the world; it keeps them from having to talk to her very often.  Call me uncharitable if you like; you’d be wrong, but hey, it’s your dime. I just don’t want the world to think that she is the best example of selflessness; it’s more like selfishness to me……a perfect example of why those who receive charity tend to violently dislike those who try to lift them up ‘in service to God’; what a crock! It’s just another way for those giving the help to feel superior and self-satisfied with their own piety…….a fancy, long winded way to say they are barefaced liars, too cowardly to admit their own selfishness…..

“All of us necessarily hold many casual opinions that are ludicrously wrong simply because life is far too short for us to think through even a small fraction of the topics that we come across.” — Julian Simon  (And some, like Mother Theresa, never bother to question their dogmatic beliefs, to test their validity against reality…..)

One final thought on this subject…..and, sorry, but my karma just ran over your dogma.

A form of open-mindedness is the pathway to wisdom. Close your mind and you  open the way for ignorance to flourish, but you will never even know it. — our old friend Anonymous

“Those who really deserve praise are the people who, while human enough to enjoy power, nevertheless pay more attention to justice than they are compelled to do by their situation.” — Thucydides

It’s been quite a while since I last saw, or used, a quote from Thucydides; I’ve always liked his take on things. This is a very astute observation, and a good yardstick to measure the relative worth of a politician.  Politicians, dealing as they do with power every day, are the most susceptible to its degrading qualities, so we need some way to decide whether or not we want them to continue to hold such power in their sweaty little hands. Without going through the entire list of the current crop of bozoids in office, I can still say with some confidence that I cannot think of a single example of a person such as described who has been elected in the past 60 years. The only reason I don’t include politicians before that time in this list is that I wasn’t there, and therefore am not qualified to judge that; one can’t rely on written history to give an accurate picture.

So, in the interest of fairness, I am challenging my readers…… give me a name of someone in the public eye in the last 60 years who meets the standard laid down by Thucydides above, and provide some evidence, and I will change my tune to include that information. If anyone can come up with one, I’ll be very surprised; encouraged as well, because the existence of one would imply the possible existence of others who share this attribute. We’ll see if I get any names……

“I have witnessed and greatly enjoyed the first act of everything which Wagner created, but the effect on me has always been so powerful that one act was quite sufficient; whenever I have witnessed two acts I have gone away physically exhausted; and whenever I have ventured an entire opera the result has been the next thing to suicide.” — Mark Twain, 1891

I can relate to this very well. I pretty much like just about any kind of music there is, but as far as I’m concerned, 90% of the operas I’ve heard or seen were so thrilling I could barely stay awake. In fact, I might have slept through much of the one’s I’ve been to, had not those women on stage been caterwauling in notes so high, my whiskey glass trembled in fear.

Now, I will admit, there are some operatic pieces that are just as advertised; soaring melodies filled exquisitely by powerful, painfully beautiful voices (a couple of the female lead’s pieces in Aida, and the one from an opera I forget; it’s the one the protagonist in the Shawshank Redemption played on the warden’s record machine, broadcasting it for all the prisoners to hear…..incredible voice, whoever it was..). But mostly, it’s just singing in gibberish to boring music, surrounding a hard-to believe, sort-of-like a plot.

I thinks it is so popular because almost everyone is afraid to challenge the widely held belief of it’s superior qualities; they think folks will laugh at them for swimming against the tide of opinion. Me, I couldn’t care less what anybody thinks….as far as I’m concerned, it’s all a pile of doodoo, not worth a fraction of the time some folks spend on it……

“I love to go down to the schoolyard and watch all the little children jump up and down and run around yelling and screaming…They don’t know I’m only using blanks.” — Emo Phillips

Now, THAT’S funny!  Admit it, you smiled or chuckled, before you could stop yourself. Ghetto humor can be pretty grisly, or shocking, and requires a certain degree of callousness to fully appreciate the point of it. But, it also is very human, dealing as it does with a side of life that only one who has been there can really understand. Most folks wouldn’t be able to think that there was anything funny about somebody shooting, or even pretending to shoot, at kids in a schoolyard; it goes against all their most long-held beliefs about what makes something funny. But to anyone who has spent any time at all on the street, it is hilarious……and that is part of human nature, no matter who might disagree…..

So ends another foray into the wilds of the fringes of thought…. I think it went well today. I have a feeling that some of what I’ve written will bother some folks, a lot. Well, sorry ’bout that, but that is a personal problem, and not my fault. I am perfectly willing to discuss and or argue over any points I have written about, and given enough pertinent evidence, am able to adjust my belief system accordingly. I write my beliefs in pencil, always; it makes it easier to erase and start over than writing them in stone. But, don’t try to come at me with dogma, or with something someone else has indoctrinated you to believe; I will eat your beliefs like M&M’s, and enjoy every one of them. In any case, I hope that y’all have enjoyed today’s little slice of gigoid….. y’all take care out there…..

Sometimes I sits and thinks,
