Scenes from a train….

Hajime…. Living in today’s complex world requires some rather refined coping skills. Such a statement might generally call for a bit of explanation, but, I don’t think there’s much there to argue with; the evidence is pretty clear, for anyone with the wit to perceive it. If one pays much attention to all the crap flying at our heads, they take the chance they’ll miss something important, amongst all the unreliable information, spread so blatantly by those who find the need to lie and cheat their way through life, in order to feel they have some sort of control over others. This neurotic fear is one shared by all humans; some find rather more rational methods to deal with that fear, instead of giving in to its irrational demand for security, a condition unnatural in reality.

The above paragraph summarizes the current world fairly accurately, I’d say. You’ll note the absence of anything in the way of definite solution; that’s deliberate. I can’t honestly say I’ve found the only honorable path to follow; I only know it is one I can live with, according to the understanding of reality I’ve come to hold as the most true. Each of us must decide for ourselves how we will react to our fears, whether they are based on rational information, or not. Each must decide for themselves how to face that fear, or, for that matter, whether we will face it, at all, or allow it to determine our acts according to only that which others have told us is true, by their own standards and beliefs. To choose our way, our own path, is what makes us human; to remove that choice is to deny our humanity.

So be it. I can’t say it much clearer than that; how you take it is up to you; what you do with it is also your choice. If nothing else, here in ECR, that choice will always be yours. May it always be so…. which is also your responsibility. It’s a tough world out there, but, it’s well worth making every effort to make it the one you can live with, honorably, free from the fear that comes with ignorance…

I guess that was a rantish sort of introduction, wasn’t it? Oh, well, such is life. I can’t really say what prompted all the above, but, then, I don’t really care. It’s what it is, and that’s all it is. Just like me. And, of course, Popeye, who taught us all about standing up to fear…. Ya only have to find what your spinach looks, and tastes like….

Shall we Pearl?

on which we beat out tunes for bears to dance to,

Dreaming, I wait….

In the most patient moments of rationality
kindness flows smoothly in a special milieu,
fallow thoughts speed first from equality
to give no anxious fever, anger to eschew.

Indignant mothers and step-sons in-law
shall fade simply from brilliant to grey,
intoning ritual dogma, fresh, avid, and raw,
falling, falling, in massive pastoral disarray.

Safety lives not, save brightly in ignorant bliss,
it follows us all, silent and infinitely frail,
foremost too often, soft as a virgin kiss,
alive, always eager, willing, and pale.

Intimate knowledge finds only the bold few
with courage and virtue to gift, unbidden.
No solemn royal version may pass in review,
true love for man, never to remain unhidden.

Sweet feathers of Emily’s hope uplift,
calm, drowsy episodes bursting with light,
With final glad cries we set ourselves adrift,
swimming in the oceans of natural delight.

When sorrow is banished, in ages yet to come,
roots solidly anchored, cold and remote,
Ample supplies of kindness sit silent and dumb,
and the old stranger shrugs on his faded coat.

Dreaming, then, I wait with shadows in the night
aspiring to inspire, a message from the muse’s heart
Never forgotten images, framed in color bright,
tempt me only, grieving, steeped in serenity’s arcane art….

Small Beauty, on city streets….

Hajime…. It is probably a bit early for introspection; like any area of thought, it’s a good thing to wait until one is fully awake, or, at least, invested in becoming so, before making any serious attempts at coherence, or, even more important, decision-making. To suppose I can figure out an inner demon’s moves well enough to defend myself from them is, perhaps, the height of arrogance. Oh, well; if I get hurt, so be it. Nobody else will lose any hit points, & will have nothing to worry about….

One may well ask one’s self at this point, “What’s the point?” To answer, naturally, would only encourage one, so, we’ll pass on that, preferring, instead, to address the aforementioned introspection, which, you may have noted, hasn’t materialized as yet. Damn good thing, too, since it is/was rather embarrassing. What was I thinking? Oh, right…. I wasn’t. In fact, at this point, I’ve managed to thoroughly confuse myself, to the point I no longer remember what I was going to say on that subject. Oh, goodie. I love when I get all introspective, then lose track of the whole thing in the press of the process. Just makes me tingly all over, to know my unconscious defense systems are working well….

The only part of that to worry over is what sort of direction to take from here; it’s clearly not in the direction we were heading, wherever that might have been. Hell, now I think of it, it’s even more confusing. In fact, I’m pretty well lost, ffolkes. I don’t know if I was actually going to be introspective, or just spent about 13 minutes creating a complete bubble of conflicting intentions, imbalanced by indecision and sheer fuzziness, until, now, I’m making up new ways to avoid talking about any of it, or, anything, at all. What a waste of electrons!

Fuck it. I’m done with the intro, which may just be the weirdest damn thing I’ve ever seen, much less created. If y’all have any further issues from having to read it, well, you’re on your own. I’m leaving now, before this becomes legally actionable….

Unheralded Sagacity…

To many, who will not see beyond their nose
the world becomes a dangerous place,
a bullet in every gun, a thorn with every rose,
no magic comes to save us, reality leaves no trace.

Minds closed, wrapped tight in manufactured fears,
men become clay, easily molded into complacent form.
No chains needed, held in thrall for years,
lies become gospel, when dishonesty is the norm.

Shed the chains you wear in durance, in kind;
Oh, ye of little faith, and much doubt
Strength is found in an unfettered mind,
Cry “freedom” with a great shout.

No help from any gods can hinder so much
as our own lack of confidence;
finding the light within, knowing it as such
confirms us, becoming consequence.

The City ~ Ferry View…

Hajime…. Having learned some years ago how difficult it can be to be creative on a consistent basis, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to me when I find myself completely without any connection to the well from which it springs on any particular morning. But, it does, every time, generating the same feelings of panic and dismay, at the thought of having to, once again, cudgel my brain into producing something worth putting down on screen/paper, a process which is by no means consistent, or, comfortable. Apparently, though, the process IS one that works, if only in my dreams of adequacy.

With that being said, I will add, I’m not complaining. I am up early enough to have time to find the proper cudgeling tool, and, in retrospect, did so with some dispatch, if not elegance. You see, it’s done. Well, it’s as done as it’s going to get, anyway. I managed to persuade SB to cough up enough pearls to compose an old-school pearl, found an appropriate poem to accompany the fine poetry pearl I found, and picked out some rather good music, so, the elements are all in place. The only thing lacking is any sort of confidence in what I’ve done. But, confidence isn’t important; chutzpah is, and we’ve got plenty of that on hand.

Since my creative capabilities are somewhat limited today, obviously, I’ll forgo further blather, in favor of moving this along. Or, as we are fond of saying, let’s get this slow on the toad. No fooling around, either; we’re done, and, gone….

Rejection

“Jesus loves me, this I know,
For the Bible tells me so…”
I’d be crying a river, I thought
if ever such crap I bought.

Sorry if it hurts your sense of style,
but, hypocrisy always gives me bile.
Being lied to accidentally is okay,
but, deliberate lies make me angry, and fey.

Oh, God, hear what I pray!
Keep me from your followers today.
Having to listen to so much that is wrong
makes me puke, before it makes me strong.

I don’t know why it isn’t clear to other folks,
which is alright, you know, different strokes.
But, why should that mean that they must
force me to believe, or fail in trust?

Spare me the lies, and the make-believe,
fairy tales are easier to hear, and to weave.
They give us a lesson which we can feel
but don’t pretend at all to be real.

Reality can scare us, that’s a given fact,
still, met with care it will leave us mostly intact.
Met without fear, standing tall and alone
Life will allow us to make it our own.

Folly beckons, and so many follow
mass delusions seem to me most hollow.
I’ll have to stick to my own chosen way
while so many go so sadly astray.

It’s lonely at times, it may seem sad,
but really isn’t, and I’m quite glad,
that knowledge is always stronger than fear,
year after year, tear after tear…..

Hajime…. Since I have no bloody idea how this got done, I’m unwilling to spend a huge effort introducing it. Placing a portion of the usual dross here might serve our purpose, but, to what gain? Little enough, to be sure. However, since it IS done, and, since there IS a new poem to share, funky as it may be, I suppose I owe myself the courtesy of at least a few words of note, if only to get us moving in the right direction. Now, if we only knew which direction that was, we’d be good to go…..

As we don’t, I’ll go ahead & use the trimming shears, ruthlessly, to keep the vehicle from collapsing under its own weight; otherwise, we could be stuck here in the intro until further notice. Luckily, we’ve already received that notice, which states, unequivocally, we won’t be allowed to stay here. Probably just as well, the way it’s going, eh? I think, given the circumstances, or lack thereof, I’ll just perform a small trick of legerdemain, & be done with it all for today. It’s pretty cool, actually; watch this….

Cognitive Abstinence

Ever affable, serendipity calls on random days
bringing gifts, wrapped in flesh and bone.
Tempting fate, color springs from intricate stone;
singing, laughing, poised to amaze.

In metaphoric haste, clues gather to confer;
graceless, with absently casual frivolity;
fraught with severely limited civility,
lead yet into realms where hope may infer.

Allegory has faded, past all disrepute;
indelible, entropy holds the field today.
Honorable, the children stand, resolute,
justice is spent, the old-fashioned way.

Temporary measures no longer apply
to foster dreams; endless nightmares parade.
Forlorn, empty, the unwashed masses cry,
while time slips away, sleeping in the shade.

Wondrous moments continue to accumulate
odd gestures of indignant fortitude.
Destiny embraces no desire to illuminate;
with such a cavalier attitude.

Pale, afraid, the joker sits to compose
a final ode to reason.
Such grandiose dreams, a dying rose,
dragged along from season to season.

Hajime…. While gazing once again at the massive field of blank white screen before me this morning, several fantasies, mostly science-fiction based, passed through my head as potential material for exploration. None of it was particularly original, so, I decided to let it all go the way of most ideas, passing it into disposable memory without any significant delay. Since that left me with nothing to write about, you see before you all the remaining thoughts currently inhabiting my frontal lobes. Not much there, is there?…. Or, rather, not much here, I should say….

I am certain there are a couple directions to which I could hare off, where I could comfort myself with sheer nonsense, or batter y’all with prevarication, or even throw out a bit of ranting; none of it strikes my fancy, though. I suppose, in the best interests of all concerned parties, the most relevant, compassionate decision is to cease and desist all efforts to make this excellent, or, for that matter, average. Best all around, I think, to employ some rather ruthless, but, effective techniques developed for our use by some fly-by-night literary chop-house for a bargain price. Off the proverbial cuff….

I never meant to kill that period of time,
it didn’t give me any choice.
It tried to hem me in without reason, or rhyme,
refused me any vote, or any voice.

You have to admit, I buried it deep and fast,
just as if I cared.
I knew, though, it would never last,
or ever be fully repaired.

No news, no pictures can bring it back,
once is all we get.
No pleas of public good, or even public lack;
in stone the past is set.

Futuristic visions now occupy my dreams,
I’m ready to go on.
Look! It fills up the screen, and it gleams!
Where’s the moment I’m sitting on?

Now, I remembered, at long, long last,
is all we really can hold.
Every moment goes by so bloody fast,
we’d best fill them all with beauty, warm and bold.

Hajime…. Some mornings, the irony of what I do here each day becomes too much to bear, unless I retreat into either curmudgeonly irritability, or complete and utter nonsense; while I prefer the latter, the former is more, shall we say, productive, in terms of returning me to relative stability. Naturally, I choose that one, to suit my own lifestyle preferences. Go figure, eh? That’s where the irony comes into the picture, coloring all with its sardonic, pitiless box of crayons, none of which are remotely pastel in nature. Such is life in the Big City, I guess.

Rather than spend a lot of time exploring this well of angst, (which can, conceivably, release demons I’d rather keep caged….), I’ll try to finish off this Pearl, and be done with it for today. Why? Well, why not? Besides, Smart Bee is being ridiculously recalcitrant, making me open and close the program repeatedly to find even one worthwhile pearl. Qualifications of Passion

Sweetly and soft, her vision comes insistently stealing,
waking gently welcome strength of safely intimate feeling.
No mundane distractions even feebly compare,
to celestial musics that fill such welcoming air.

Joyous celebration is each minute’s lot
whenever I’m near her, and when I am not.
Just knowing she is real and relatively near
provides a glad and final solution to fear.

Trust can heal, and live up to the test,
and even the worst of us become best;
Love, when given, is a type of realistic example
of how life can be simple, yet more than just a sample.

Memory is forgiving, in the face of the Now,
our lessons of necessity will always show how;
Our future is but illusion, until fully grown,
the only option for survival is to call it our own.

Feathered with hopeful dreams of acquisition,
live the passions that have defined my position.
Universal justice demands satisfaction
love is ever my choice, and my only reaction.

There you have it. It’s late, and, it’s weird, so, all good to go. I’ll try again tomorrow, as long as everybody’s aim stays bad…. I mean, if they’re still shooting at me, that means I’m having some sort of effect, right? Right. ‘Course, I AM human, and subject to delusional behavior at the drop of a metaphor… but, what the hell….. See ya, ffolkes…. Just try to stop me….

Hajime…. Good morrow, ffolkes. I am currently extremely busy out in the BBR, as I have a friend staying to visit for the week. Posts here may become sparse, but, that remains to be seen. Putting this one together was a bit problematic, but, since I was able to get it done, perhaps I can do so again later in the week. If not, you may see some re-blogs from the archives. Either way, know I am busy, but, always have this process in mind, and regardless of how many distractions are offered by reality, I’ll be back to regale y’all with the dross and drivel so copiously created by my incredibly confusing mind… count on it.

In the meantime, let’s get started with the process of posting today’s mess, and get on with the rest of the day, and week. I’ll use good ol’ number 4, which is currently undefeated. It works pretty quickly, and quietly, so, hang on & stay alert….

The Grateful Dead ~ Image from Dead.net via email

In my life, I’ve been to a dozen or more concerts by the Dead, ranging from 1969 to sometime in the 90’s, when I saw them the last time before the passing of their leader, Jerry Garcia. Though the band continues on, with new faces, the legend, and the experience lives on, with a multitude of choices to listen and watch, on You Tube, or on various sites, including Dead.net…. Enjoy, ffolkes; maybe you had to be there, but, there is NOTHING like a Dead concert…..

From 1/20/2013:

“Nothing unreal exists.”

~~ Kiri-Kin-Tha’s Law of Metaphysics ~~

For the uninitiated, this is from Star Trek, a line from the fourth movie, The Voyage Home. It is the answer, and question, posed to Spock by the computer, near the beginning of the movie, just before it asks him, “How do you feel?” Though the quote, and its author, are part of a fictional story, and do not, as far as I know, exist in real life, the idea is nonetheless a potent philosophical assertion, and deserving of some meditation upon its implications, and ramifications. I like it, as it creates a series of doorways, one after another opening for welcome, inviting me to come in and examine its furnishings for their value…. A bit fanciful, perhaps, but then, it IS from Star Trek….

“Trekkies” have always taken the concept behind the show and movies much more seriously than most of us, and have created an entire panorama of alternate universe stories, legends, and characters as an adjunct to the original tales. I am certain that some fan, somewhere in the world, has put together a book that lays out Kiri-Kin-Tha’s philosophy for study, complete with Laws, Axioms, and Arguments. They probably even included material from other fictional works from the ST venue, weaving them into a coherent treatise, all of which is completely fabricated….. People can be pretty amazing when they are obsessed, indeed…..

“Nothing unreal exists.”….. fascinating, as Spock would say. It is reminiscent, in a backwards fashion, of the question posed by the door to Ravenclaw Tower, in the final Harry Potter book, The Deathly Hallows, when Professor McGonagall is queried, “Where do Vanished objects go?” by the door, in order to gain entrance to the Ravenclaw common room. “Into nonbeing, which is to say, everything.”, she answers immediately. “Nicely phrased”, replied the door….. I say backwards only because the ST movie came first in real time, by about 25 years or so…. As can be seen, however, the concepts involved in the two similar episodes are more than mere ideological throw-aways, but have some valid basis for their existence…

This is the power of Imagination at its finest, in my mind. People will take a good idea, and run with it into landscapes where it has never before been conceived, turning it into passionate variations on the original theme whose quality rivals that of it progenitor. At the height of the frenzy over the Harry Potter movies, a few years ago, I visited a site called MuggleNet.com, curious as to what the fans of the movie and stories were doing.

I was completely astounded by the prolific writings by fans, who wrote entire novels, short stories, and alternative plots by the dozens, all populated by the characters from the books by J.K. Rowling. Romances between the various characters abounded in the imagination of the fans, as well as the creation of new characters, and kinds of magic. The variety and depth of talent displayed is incredible, and goes to show how powerful is the influence of obsession on our imagination.

And hence one master-passion in the breast,
Like Aaron’s serpent, swallows up the rest.

~~ Alexander Pope — Essay on Man, Epistle ii, Line 131 ~~

Of course, obsession has the unfortunate tendency to go beyond the bounds of reasonable action in pursuit of its object of attention. It can easily consume all of the mind’s available store of common sense, submerging it in the raging river of passionate belief in whatever idea has emerged as the passion of choice. Pope was speaking no more than simple truth when he wrote these lines, which point again to the same fatal flaw that exists in other areas of human nature, the weakness of will that makes us choose paths that are self-destructive in their intensity, or in their ultimate logical end. Too many of us tend to make our choices in life without using even the most basic of mental tools we have, including imagination; the use of those tools can be hard, in the sense that it is harder to think than it is to allow others to think for you…..

Thus, we come to another point where the subject under discussion can be expanded, and further explored. Or, we can leave it here, with the ideas already discussed as a springboard for private consideration. I have a feeling it could get a bit esoteric from this juncture, and I’d lose a lot of ffolkes to the fatigue factor. I am feeling that a bit meself, having now been sparring with this Pearl for a bit over three hours. I should have eaten some philosophical oatmeal, to increase the fiber content of my output, I guess….

Rather than go any further down that road, we’ll bring this pearl to a close….. Perhaps you can take a bit of what we discussed with you, and chew on it later…. it doesn’t seem to get any less crunchy over time, so it can’t hurt…. Fewer calories than jerky, and it won’t require flossing afterward…..

“You can get anything you want, at Alice’s restaurant (‘ceptin’ Alice).”

Most days, if I don’t have a new poem to share, I’ll put one of my older poems here, to avoid contaminating anyone else’s reputation by proximity to my own work. I wouldn’t care to impugn anyone’s status inadvertently. But, I simply like this little piece of doggerel from the Trilogy of the Rings, so, it’s been chosen to adorn today’s poetry section.

I sit beside the fire and think of all that I have seen,
Of Meadow-flowers and butterflies in summers that have been;
Of yellow leaves and gossamer in autumns that there were,
With morning mist and silver sun and wind upon my hair.
I sit beside the fire and think of how the world will be
When winter comes without a spring that I shall ever see,
For still there are so many things that I have never seen:
In every wood in every spring there is a different green.
I sit beside the fire and think of people long ago,
And people who will see a world that I shall never know.
But all the while I sit and think of times that were before,
I listen for returning feet and voices at the door.

Hajime…. I don’t have much today. In fact, I’ve got so little, calling it zero would be dignifying it. It’s so little, it makes zero look like infinity. But, wait, there’s more!

No, there really isn’t. The physical issue related yesterday is such that it leaves me with no energy for anything beyond the minimum activities of daily living. To keep this from turning into a complaint session rather than an intro, we’re going to assume our ruthless mask, to ensure we get this done. It’s going to require some rather extensive ruthlessness, too, so, we’d best get started on that. We will begin, by beginning, now….

Seeing is Conducive to Belief

Folly sits so comfortably upon my fevered brow
one would easily believe that I would know how
to look at Life with a jaded, weary eye
seeing enough, and more, to know Why.

Such seems the case, as I will it to be,
an open book of a face, it looks so like me;
what’s known to be so, needs no close attention
familiar sights require no minding, nor mention.

The eye is drawn at once to the stark and new,
and sent back to sleep by successful review.
Once we find evidence we feel we understand,
curiosity languishes, dismissed at command.

Ancient sages knew the insidious value of illusion,
preachers and pundits know the power of confusion.
Each pair of eyes contains its own point of reference,
each mind sets its own standards of preference.

Seeing is believing, for those who live in thrall,
accepting what is perceived is all they ever recall.
Unknown to them, reality follows another set of rules,
Deeper, more dangerous, and no place for fools.

Who’s cross-eyed?….

Hajime…. Unavoidable, if semi-volitional events transpired this morning, preventing a smooth transition into writing mode. Fortunately, I ignored it all, and did it my way, which proved to be the most efficacious method, as, well, here I am, writing. I will submit that there may be some who would argue that what goes on here resembles writing much less than it does foolishness, but, we stopped listening to them long ago. My favorite response to such criticisms is, “We are not amused.”, followed by a Bronx cheer. They never pay any attention anyway, but, it does keep them quiet from the shock for a time, usually long enough for me to shut the door in their faces.

See? I’m writing…. Where else could you find complete nonsense right at the start of a post? Oh. Well, okay, but, it’s my own nonsense, which makes it acceptable for consumption, under the proper conditions, easily identified by their bright, pink faces. Still, it’s heartening, to think I can do this kind of thing, and not get prosecuted. Such moments in life are rare, thankfully, so, we should treasure them. If only it made any sense!….

Very well. I can see I’m not going to find anything worthwhile to discuss, unless I start telling you about today’s Pearl. But, why should I do that, when all you need to do is scroll down to find out? Instead, I’ll resort to one of our older, more ruthless methods for closing the intro, by breaking out the old #4, our most commonly used, and most effective technique. It works like this….

Shall we pearl?….

and (2) not starting.”

Dead Hands,Typing…

Puzzled anew by anomalous blocks of pain
caught, bemused, chained to routine, insane.
Stilled within breathless beauty
Engaging epiphany, insistent, called to duty.

Knees bent in lieu of a faithful rendition
suffuses, confuses, locked into stale perdition.
Clearing corrosion with hands encased in stone
Singular frozen follicles, masked by bone.

Partial focus brings unfiltered flavors to light
coloring each particle in simple delight.
Forlorn, novel conceptual artists singing in tune
nine notes in harmony, soft as the moon.

Honed blades of carbon steel flash in rhyme,
filling sensual receptors well past closing time.
Borrowed from neighbors in a week-old game
still bloody, without a proper name.

No flooded memories can justify such cost
no simple stationery, bilious, afraid, lost.
Ten times ten will never be enough
To fill so empty a stolen trough.

Bartering simplicity takes well into the night
solidly temporary pillars turned bright.
Unknown to all the pretty children who came
none were called, none had any remaining flame.

Lasers locked on target, Captain…

Hajime…. Howdy, ffolkes. While creating today’s offering, I came to a realization about why I haven’t been able to find the angst necessary to produce a good rant. The realization came as I looked for a pearl to place at the beginning, to indicate the direction the piece would follow; there were so many issues, and so many pearls, I couldn’t make up my mind. It isn’t the angst after all; there’s plenty of that, as a direct result of having plenty of cause. So, I gave up, as is my wont of late, and decided to wait until one of the issues assumed a cloak of dire need, then give it a shot….. Otherwise, I’d be writing forever, without any resolution, for there aren’t many good answers to be found.

Now that I’ve provided myself with a plenitude of future excuses to be lazy, I’ll tell you today’s Pear is a good one, if rant-free. Fine music, perhaps my best poem, and a damn fine old-school lesson, sort of. I’m happy with it, & that’s all that matters ultimately. Y’all will, as always, need to decide for yourselves whether your time has been wasted, or augmented. Sharing your decision is, of course, optional. When I see such comments, I tend to feel a small portion of guilt, right before ignoring them altogether, so, it’s not my favorite thing to occur; I gave up guilt long ago. But, I’m fair-minded, mostly, so, have at it, if you wish…. No worries; I don’t own a gun.

Okay, that’s about enough of that for one day. It’s all getting that red color that happens right before Reality begins to swirl and fade away, so, perhaps it would be best to get on with the rest of this mess. It’s not as if we are concerned with our sales figures, but, I hate casualties, and so does the insurance guy. So, we’ll get the slow on the toad, and be done with it for another diurnal period. Besides, it makes it harder to catch me this way…. See ya down the page….

Unheralded Sagacity…

To many, who will not see beyond their nose,
the world becomes a dangerous place;
a bullet in every gun, a thorn with every rose.
No magic comes to save us, reality leaves no trace.

Minds closed, wrapped tight in manufactured fears,
men become clay, easily molded into complacent form.
No chains needed, held in thrall for years;
lies become gospel, when dishonesty is the norm.

Shed the chains you wear in durance, in kind;
oh, ye of little faith, and much doubt.
Strength is found in an unfettered mind;
cry “freedom” with a great shout.

No help from any gods can hinder so much
as our own lack of confidence;
finding the light within, knowing it as such
confirms us, becoming consequence.

Illumination…..
