it-flows

It all flows; nothing stands still….

Hajime…. Good morrow, mes amis; ’tis a fine morning here in paradise, with dawn still approaching, and, our delusions of adequacy intact. Such is the power of human imagination; no matter how dark, or troubled, or problematic our lives become, we can deny it, with ease. I mean, just look at what has already taken place. I’ve made at least two assertions which, patently, show no evidence of any sort of reflection of reality, to wit; I live in paradise, and am adequately prepared to face the day. Both, of course, are not true, but, don’t blame me. I’m an American, and have been deliberately confused since first getting a load of TV, back in the early 1950’s….

However, as we are so fond of reiterating here, so be it. There is little we now experience which lends itself to proper assimilation; it first must pass the test of truth, which, given the scarcity of THAT to be found, can be a tricky task, ’tis clear. But, we go on, in spite of the obstacles, just as if we really had the time and skill to deal with it. Why not? It won’t go away, and it won’t hold still, so, no point in spending too much time or effort to worry about it; worry won’t help, anyway, will it? Nope….

Now I’ve completely lost most of my Gentle Readers, (hell, I lost myself….), it’s probably best if we get on with this. All the elements are in place, though not as fresh as I might wish; the new poem’s blocked, and the rant’s on hold to perform research. So, we’ve got some default standards today, and a rather good final, old-school pearl to challenge your sense of irony, if not your perspicacity. Go figure, eh? I might add, what else is new? But, that would be self-indulgent, and not worthy of our time or notice. Besides, it’s time for me to do this….

Shall we Pearl?….

Piraeus calls me, silently

Sizzle, sizzle, crash, bang, boom.
Intellect burning with subsequent doom.
Lingering long over decisive style,
Whistling up chaos all the while.

Such frozen thoughts may shatter,
Should we infer, but, no matter.
Firing blanks is children at play
Blooded sages all gasp in dismay.

Nonsense is good sense at times
Mundane objectives trip lightly in rhymes.
Fallen angels dance on a pin
Until each sinner enters within.

Fast moments with natural rain
Bring ashes, yet still must remain.
Final thoughts clamor for more
Find them only on a far distant shore.

Gateway to adventure….

Hajime…. I write to stay sane. That isn’t to say I am, necessarily, but, I can honestly say I make a consistent effort to be so, even when there doesn’t really seem to be much point, since the world’s getting pretty fucking insane, anyway. But, to please my mother, who would have hated to see me a cold-blooded killer, I try each day to maintain a modicum of sanity. It doesn’t always work, but, since the primary goal is to avoid acting in a homicidal manner, I guess it works well enough…. Can’t rightly say that makes me particularly happy, as it would feel a damn sight better to just ace a couple of mundanes, and be done with it. But, I also like living without bars on my windows, and doors to which I don’t have a key….

Now that I’ve again established the basic parameters, I’ll confess to some rather nasty recent periods, in which I have successfully defeated a number of vicious demons, all of whom come to me gratis, simply because they can. I’ve been dealing with them for some years now, ever since realizing they were mine; for a long time, they seemed a gift from the gods, (yes, that’s sarcasm…), one over which I had no control. But, they’re all a product of my own inner turmoil, generated, like the Greek gods, right out of my own head. I guess 11.5 years of working in a virtual combat zone took its toll, without giving any receipt to track….

Most of the time, they lie dormant, biding their time, until they can spring forth, fully armed, to attack in a frenzy, at a moment when I am least prepared for dealing with them; I’m pretty sure they get leaked intel from Murphy, who monitors my activities, waiting with honed patience for just the right moment, when I am least mindful, and poorly prepared to deal with such issues. Go figure, eh?

Yes, I know, I know. They’re MY demons, and they’re, ultimately, under my control. And, yes, I also know they only come out when I tell them to, even if the telling is unconscious. Me & my unconscious have a long history of such arguments, but, then, I suppose that just makes me human, doesn’t it? Yes, it does. Since any further self-examination will turn maudlin, having first opened the doors with too much honesty, I’ll stop here, while I can still lay claim to a portion of the humanity I possess, by showing the compassion to cease and desist from further introspection. Besides, this intro is rapidly growing to a point of bloating, which could lead to gas. Can’t have that in these closed quarters, can we? No….

Right. We’re done, simply because I’m now out of standard BS, and would be forced to break into our reserves. Naturally, we keep plenty of THAT around, but, why waste it, when it will do more harm at another time? Hmm… I see I’m starting to go a bit wonky, so, let’s try an old trick. It’s pretty cool, and, more than that, will get us where we need to go. It looks just like this….

Premises, premises….

Tricked, I stumble, and I fall
dreaming, through an abandoned palace.
Frightened and wary, unheard my call
fading into memory, no cup, no argent chalice.

The people, crushed, cry out to be freed
asking only to take part, or travel.
Nascent oaths spotlight such bursting need
fed by treachery, deep from our well.

Only the wicked shall find their way blocked
justice seeks them, snug in their hole.
Faint praises never touched, but naked, stalked
singing no gospel, no soul, no rock and roll.

Only the promised will remember the way
from unforgiven trails of sorrow.
To live life, and give death no sway,
saving grace for our only tomorrow.

Bridge to Eternity….or, maybe just to Marin…

Hajime…. As if you were unable to tell on your own, I will tediously inform you, it’s a Deng Ming kinda day…. Now, that could seem rather obscure, but, what with the rather obvious quotes bracketing today’s intro, I don’t believe it is. Just read ’em, and weep. Oh, not from pity, or joy, or any of the finer emotions; just weep because I wasted a few more moments of your precious time on Earth relating such nonsense to you. I’d apologize, but, it got us into the next paragraph; rather than exhibit disgusting hypocrisy, we’ll simply move on, just as if it hadn’t occurred.

Some of y’all may wonder, given the unusually strident tone of the first paragraph, whether I have it all together today. To be honest, I haven’t a clue. But, since the Pearl for today is already done, such as it is, I’ll merely continue my search for rational discussion, which may, or may not, serve to fulfill any personal requirements I have for getting this posted in anything like a timely fashion. Oh, wait, timely is never a problem, is it, when one has a Tardis? Oops! Forgot; the Doctor would be ashamed. But, then, he’s pretty emotional, all in all; it’s part of his charm…. Now, where was I, before I so efficiently distracted myself? Oh, right.

That’s about all I’ve got today; it seems my brain is taking a hiatus from actual thought, leaving me with little choice but to close this off, and go finish the ending. Before I completely give away all my secret techniques of time-management, or get too close to actual literature, I’ll do just that. Before I do, I should probably tell you…. No, I’d better not. Better if you don’t know beforehand. Let’s do this, instead….

Early Observations

Until I knew there was more,
I wanted to know God.
They said he was a nice guy,
and would let me live forever.

All I had to do, they said,
was live my life for Him,
always living by scripture
cleaving only to his Way.

But, everyone I saw in church,
acted different at home.
Living wild, cussin’ and fussin’,
nobody lived like they said.

Still, I tried to be like Jesus,
he was sort of cool.
He never hurt nobody
and walked on the right path.

‘Course they killed him for that,
they couldn’t stand his example.
Turned him into a martyr,
hid his real words among their own.

Then I found the Buddha,
and met Lao Tzu at the gate.
They saw things real different,
showed me how to see straight.

Right thought, and right action
replace blind obedience and faith.
Reality becomes manageable,
fear retreats, the universe expands.

Brother John said it pretty well,
“Imagine there’s no heaven,
it’s easy if you try.”
Sounds like he knew why.

Day to day, life is grand,
we walk in eternal beauty.
Open your eyes and hearts,
find yourself already immortal.

Applicable standards don’t apply….

Ffolkes,

“It seems like once people grow up, they have no idea what’s cool.”

~~ Calvin & Hobbes~~

Glasgow-Greenock Port 020

Stained Glass Art in Greenock, Scotland….

Hajime…. Today’s opening pearl, above the picture, from our old friend, Calvin, is more relevant than is normally the case. You see, it fits right in with recent thoughts, wherein I have come to firmly believe the state of the world may be, at least partially, attributed to our human tendency to trust our parents a bit more than is either practical, or prudent. Now, I realize that’s a pretty controversial statement; however, as I hold it to be absolutely the truth, I must tell it as I see it. It is my firm belief that the major portion of our troubles as a human culture are rooted in the loss, before the age of four years, of the sensitive crap detector we all receive at birth as part of our legacy.

I’ve related in the past how this sad loss, of our most effective defense against untruth and/or manipulation by others, is deliberately downgraded, or removed altogether by those who had it taken from them at the same age, to wit: their own parents, who suffered their own loss in infancy, thus ensuring a new generation of easily manipulable slaves. It has been going on for several thousand years, since our species decided to come together into cities and towns, and build a human culture that now covers the planet from pole to pole. Sometimes, looking at the big picture, we appear more as an infestation than an augmentation to the circle of Life here on Earth.

All of this, you may note, constitutes a rant; perhaps, since it is so brief, we might call it a rantish outburst; in that form, we can call a halt to further lamentations, thereby regaining the trust of the Gentle Reader, that we won’t ever make them work too hard, at least not without furnishing a bit of levity, or even nonsense, to balance the scales of justice. Of course, that manages to avoid any mention of the potential for chaos that ensues every time we do so, but, we simply don’t give a single fuck about that, and will continue to tempt the power of entropy at every turn. You see, it’s just too much fun to watch things go wonky….

Okay, that’s about enough of that. I have completed a minimalist Pearl for your reading pleasure today. It shouldn’t tax anyone’s credibility too far, and the plastic restraints will make that safe enough. Before I start to go too far toward complete idiocy, I’m going to let y’all get to it, a necessary injunction designed to prevent spoilage. On that relatively cryptic, yet transparent note, I say we go on. I’ll remind y’all it is MY blog, when I say go, we go….

Shall we Pearl?….

Hajime…. If I were so inclined, I could start today with a feeling of pride, for having completed a Pearl under stiff opposition. But, since the major portion of said opposition came from my own head, it might be a trifle hypocritical, or, at minimum, shamelessly obtuse. I will, however, note my sense of gratification for having it done, no matter how it came about. Such is the life of a curmudgeon in the early morning….

This isn’t to say life isn’t good; it isn’t. Hah! Fooled ya, didn’t I? No? Okay, well, I fooled me, so that counts. It’s beginning to look as if nothing I write is going to count, doesn’t it? Perhaps we’d be better off to forgo any further attempts at levity, or even sobriety, in favor of getting on with this. Yes, I believe that’s the way to go; it may be our only chance to do this at all; day’s like this can turn ugly in a heartbeat, should my mindful control of unreality begin to unravel…. the symptoms of which are rapidly mounting. *********

From 4/17/2013:

“A thing is not proved because no one has ever questioned it…Skepticism is the first step towards truth.” — Smart Bee

As I was cruising through Smart Bee this morning, looking for inspiration for section 3, I came across this little gem, unattributed. It sounds like it could have come from a number of different philosophers, all of whom are noted for their wisdom and perspicacity (another great word….). It is also a part of the human flaw that has contributed to many of the problems we face as a society, and as a species.

Actually, it might be more accurate to say that the lack of this in humans is part of the flaw; most people one talks to would not agree with this idea, as stated. In fact, it is directly opposed to the educational premises of many cultures, especially those heavily influenced by religions, such as those in Mexico, Central and South America, where Catholicism is a powerful factor in society, and in the governing of that society. India, and much of the Eastern Hemisphere, too, have societies that are heavily influenced by religion, though with more participant sects than is true in the Western Hemisphere; Hinduism, Buddhism, Shinto, to name a few, are always a contributing factor in the political events that have shaped history.

“The common dogma [of fundamentalists] is fear of modern knowledge, inability to cope with the fast change in a scientific-technological society, and the real breakdown in apparent moral order in recent years That is why hate is the major fuel, fear is the cement of the movement, and superstitious ignorance is the best defence against the dangerous new knowledge. When you bring up arguments that cast serious doubts on their cherished beliefs you are not simply making a rhetorical point, you are threatening their whole Universe and their immortality. That provokes anger and quite frequently violence.” — G Gaia

As a result of this influence, many people tend to reject skepticism, as it doesn’t fit in with what they have been taught, which is to never question anything told to them by persons in positions of authority. Churches tend to encourage this sort of attitude, as their outrageous claims of divinity, and supernatural events performed by their deities, do not stand up well to scrutiny by an objective eye. The leaders of the churches thus play right into the hands of the Beloved Ruling Class, as they counsel their flocks to obey worldly, temporal authority as readily as they are conditioned to obey the secular variety…..

“I just stepped on a factoid!” – Zippy the Pinhead

Thankfully, not all of humanity is defenseless against this sort of conditioning. There are many ffolkes out there who don’t buy into the sort of psychological blackmail being promulgated by the preachers, priests, imams, and shamans of all shapes and sizes around the world, and a large number of them seem to end up blogging, right here on WordPress…. So, I end up preaching to the choir pretty often. But, that’s okay, too, because I know that occasionally, one of those folks who do believe in what they are told, without any questions or doubts, will read this, and, if nothing else, will think about what I’ve said…. Who knows, maybe I’ll go viral, and the whole world will remember that WE ALL ARE GODS?”…… (Remember? Axiom # 3…. “Thou art God, you know…. Let’s do lunch….)

“Youth of today! Join me in a mass rally for traditional mental attitudes!” — Zippy the Pinhead

I suppose that’s a note from my subconscious, to let me know I’ve gone far enough off the rails for now, and should let these good people get on with their lives, rather than wandering around in mine…. Goodness knows where we’ll end up…. So, anyway, just remember to cultivate your sense of doubt, your “crap detector”, as it were, and never, ever take anything “on authority”, without tangible proof…. You’ll find Life to be less confusing that way; certainly, it makes it a lot easier to look yourself in the mirror in the morning…..

Hajime…. I don’t have much today. In fact, I’ve got so little, calling it zero would be dignifying it. It’s so little, it makes zero look like infinity. But, wait, there’s more!

No, there really isn’t. The physical issue related yesterday is such that it leaves me with no energy for anything beyond the minimum activities of daily living. To keep this from turning into a complaint session rather than an intro, we’re going to assume our ruthless mask, to ensure we get this done. It’s going to require some rather extensive ruthlessness, too, so, we’d best get started on that. We will begin, by beginning, now….

A friend tweeted a song to me and others yesterday; ’twas Arlo Guthrie singing “City of New Orleans”, a song written by this man, an iconic songwriter who died in 1984…. I found a concert of his on You Tube, which has poor video, but, great sound, showing off his great voice, and excellent guitar skills… His songs have been covered by the best musicians, in a number of venues, simply because they’re so good…. Enjoy, ffolkes!….

Seeing is Conducive to Belief

Folly sits so comfortably upon my fevered brow
one would easily believe that I would know how
to look at Life with a jaded, weary eye
seeing enough, and more, to know Why.

Such seems the case, as I will it to be,
an open book of a face, it looks so like me;
what’s known to be so, needs no close attention
familiar sights require no minding, nor mention.

The eye is drawn at once to the stark and new,
and sent back to sleep by successful review.
Once we find evidence we feel we understand,
curiosity languishes, dismissed at command.

Ancient sages knew the insidious value of illusion,
preachers and pundits know the power of confusion.
Each pair of eyes contains its own point of reference,
each mind sets its own standards of preference.

Seeing is believing, for those who live in thrall,
accepting what is perceived is all they ever recall.
Unknown to them, reality follows another set of rules,
Deeper, more dangerous, and no place for fools.

Hajime…. I am taking a day for myself, one that doesn’t include putting together a Pearl. Since I’m really okay, mostly, I won’t tell you about the demon attack, or, the cost of quelling the insurrection. I’ll merely say, it might take me a day or two to deal with the consequences, both internally, and externally. Don’t fret, Facebook will learn to miss me, too, and like it; otherwise, they’re in for a spot of lumps. Me, I got stuff to do….

Part of this decision arises from a need to touch the Earth; part comes simply from frustration, as Smart Bee seemingly decided to go on vacation altogether. Since I don’t feel like using alternative sources, which, though they provide a bit of variety, are a lot more time-consuming, I decided to take a day or two, to find some shit, so I can get it together. Of course, I am well aware that shit’s easy to find; it’s the getting it together that’s hard. But, I can do it, and shall, in spite of the odds, which are running 3 to 5 against.

Okay, that’s it. I’ll quit trying to write something exemplary with which to leave you; it’s pretty obvious by now, exemplary isn’t in the bag, or, for that matter, in the same county. While I’m gone, I’ll see if I can’t find my muse; she’s probably passed out drunk again, in some flop in El Ciudad Tijuana. Should I do so, the next Pearl should come out alright; if I can’t well, we’ll just have to see, won’t we? I will, anyway. On that note, let’s just get on with this, as anything else makes no sense at all…

Shall we pearl?….

and at any master who lacks the grace
to laugh at himself — I laugh.”

Today is proclaimed a wash. I have only a few pearls, of which the snippet from Lord Byron assumes primary focus. This particular stanza has always appealed to me, as being a very accurate description of much of my life. Without going into a long, expansive treatise on why that should be so, I’m going to fake the rest of today’s mess, and be done with it, for I’m not in the mood for coherency. Or, for expansiveness, for that matter. In short, I’m in a funk, though not a hole. So be it. There isn’t much, but, it all has something to say. You can decide for yourselves if you needed to hear it…. Today, everything is left as an exercise for the Gentle Reader. So be it….

Random Exposure

If I only knew what I was doing here,
I could give others a clue.
Reality gets stranger every year,
and I’m not sure what I should do.

Singing happy old tunes, in an old, gravely voice,
gives me a lot of pleasure.
I’m only glad I can still make a choice,
to look at life, to take its measure.

Memorable moments keep passing by
gilded, framed in precious emotion.
I never have to ask anyone why,
no need for a stronger potion.

Everything in life is clear, to me
there is no doubt, no misunderstanding.
We’re all good, as you can see,
members of Life, in good standing.

Life can be hard, or it can be great fun;
the right path is there for each of us to take.
That choice is often a difficult one;
pay close attention to the choice you make.

Hajime…. It used to be I’d sit here, staring at a blank screen, wondering where, and when, I’d find anything in my head worth setting down for others to read. Now, I sit here, wondering which of the various approaches I’ve developed over the past five years of blogging to use to begin the day’s mess. Perhaps the one I choose is what makes it a mess, or an offering. Or, perhaps, it’s my own attitude. Ya think? Oops, cover pulled….

Okay, we’ll use the cat method for that one. It never happened, I didn’t say it. So be it. Dreaming, I wait….

In the most patient moments of rationality
kindness flows smoothly in a special milieu,
fallow thoughts speed first from equality
to give no anxious fever, anger to eschew.

Indignant mothers and step-sons in-law
shall fade simply from brilliant to grey,
intoning ritual dogma, fresh, avid, and raw,
falling, falling, in massive pastoral disarray.

Safety lives not, save brightly in ignorant bliss,
it follows us all, silent and infinitely frail,
foremost too often, soft as a virgin kiss,
alive, always eager, willing, and pale.

Intimate knowledge finds only the bold few
with courage and virtue to gift, unbidden.
No solemn royal version may pass in review,
true love for man, never to remain unhidden.

Sweet feathers of Emily’s hope uplift,
calm, drowsy episodes bursting with light,
With final glad cries we set ourselves adrift,
swimming in the oceans of natural delight.

When sorrow is banished, in ages yet to come,
roots solidly anchored, cold and remote,
Ample supplies of kindness sit silent and dumb,
and the old stranger shrugs on his faded coat.

Dreaming, then, I wait with shadows in the night
aspiring to inspire, a message from the muse’s heart
Never forgotten images, framed in color bright,
tempt me only, grieving, steeped in serenity’s arcane art.

Toby’s too tawdry to tango….

Ffolkes,

“Go into yourself and see how deep the place is from which your life flows.”

~~ Rainer Maria Rilke in Letters to a Young Poet ~~

grumpy-leelu

Who’s this ‘grumpy cat’ dude?….

Hajime…. Running, chased by gibbering demons, claws extended to rend my flesh, I pant in abject terror. Of course, then I wake up, generally, so, all is well; the nightmare of insanity passes quickly, as a rule. As a human, my mind naturally organizes my perceptions into an ordered framework, one with which it can deal, of which rules are an important part, delineating, as they do, the boundaries of our understanding. Yes, I realize, now, that’s probably a bit more complex & esoteric a thought than I should be trying to express at this point in time; hell, I’m barely awake, having had only one cup of coffee before starting to work on this Pearl….

Ah, well, so much for my application to join the real world. I didn’t really WANT it to be accepted, anyway; it all seems so pointless these days. The world itself is broken, and there’s little to be done now that would, or could, be of any significant help in fixing it; people have pretty much sewn up their future into a casket, ready for lowering six feet down into the ground. The evidence keeps piling up, and few will even look at it, so, my own sense of hope is pretty well eroded down to a nub. But, that’s too depressing a thought with which to start the day, so, how about we let it be, and get on with what I originally began, to wit: today’s Pearl of Virtual Wisdom….

A short reminder to my readers: Pearls, and pearls, as well as mere pearls, are kind of special to me. The collections I gather usually lead to a train of thought, always off the schedule, but, running on time. They are intended as a means of feeling uplifted to begin the day. The fact they don’t usually do that isn’t important; it’s the thought that counts, right? Right. On that cryptic, if transparent note, let’s get this slow on the toad. All I have today is a poem from a couple years ago, and a rather odd, Zippy-directed old-school pearl. It’s what I’ve got, and, as always, will have to do….

Shall we pearl?….

“Als das Kind noch Kind war, gab es diese Fragen:
Warum bin ich mich, und warum nicht dich?
Warum bin ich hier, und warum nicht dort?”

~~ Rainer Maria Rilke ~~

A dream, weeping….

“Never a dull moment to spare”, he said
with a crooked grin, and a broad wink.
“Can’t keep Reality hanging by a thread….
what would Chaos, or Entropy think?”

So, we plucked up our dreams of old,
to carry us on, in dutiful, strong arms,
stuffed a candle in the remaining fold,
for luck, and perfect proof against charms.

Storms follow the sun, but, never stay;
lessons round every corner, all free.
Past fleeting doubts, in a sad disarray,
the journey becomes the reason to be.

Simple kindness manifests untold riches,
in defiance of common cause’s demise.
Bold courage, hanging in stitches,
mends wounds that come as no surprise.

Still, waters run deep, ’tis said by many.
Too much pain cannot apprehend
the salient, sharp points of epiphany,
nor, plainly, to wisdom aspire to pretend.

Folly dogs even the simplest truth,
fumes of toxic ignorance and bile,
alienated as a loose rotten tooth;
it often hides itself, for a long while.

Sought after eons ago, we cried out,
to believe, to suffer no more doubt.
But found instead good reason,
for love, and truth, from season, to season.
