The road, after stopping, goes ever on….

Hajime…. As one whose life and experience has left him with a number of opinions and beliefs uncommon to the major portion of humanity, I tend to regard the current crop of holidays with a large dollop of skepticism, as being more accurately defined as distractions, designed to keep the ignorant mundanes busy chasing illusions & dreams, spending money they can ill afford to spend on frivolity, to join in what is purported to be a celebration of new possibilities, presented to them in shiny, colorful packages of short duration, which will keep them busy and happy doing exactly what they cannot afford to be doing….

But, that’s just me; everybody else takes it as a chance to drown the sorrows of the past year, in hopes the next will be different, though they will make no particular effort to make any changes in themselves, this being the only thing that might produce changes in the lives they lead… or, more accurately, are led through, by the nose… an organ which, if properly employed, COULD be a valuable tool for them, in sniffing out the lies and illusions they so readily adopt as their own… Then again, I don’t suppose it’s easy to alter a lifetime habit of NOT using their innate abilities in ways that might help them, having been trained since birth to deny they even have them….

Ah, well, so passes another year, in a fashion arbitrarily decided upon by the narcissistic sociopaths who manipulate our society on Earth for their own benefit, to their own purposes, at the expense of all those mundanes who refuse to consider their own ignorance a handicap, thus handing control of their minds to the unscrupulous scoundrels, who possess no humanity, and no concern over the consequences of their actions upon anyone, or anything other than themselves. But, it’s their lives, and, if they want to spend them as a mental slave to delusions fostered upon them by clever assholes, well, that’s their choice…. The problem is, they don’t realize it IS their choice, having been convinced at an early age to surrender their right to choose… In my mind, this is what makes a human being, and NOBODY is going to take my choices from me…

I really didn’t intend to rant first thing this year, but, what the hell? Why not, eh? And, now, I’m done, & we can move on to something less disturbing to anyone’s sense of guilt or regrets. Hopefully, anyway. Why don’t I use this old trick, so we can do that without further delay?…. Watch this….

Shall we Pearl?

Since it’s a new year, why not start it out with some of the best music I know? In my experience, it doesn’t get much better than what came out of this event in 2002, when a great many of the world’s best musicians got together to pay tribute to another of their peers, one who left an indelible mark on the world, in more ways than merely artistically…. Enjoy, if you will, Ravi Shankar, his daughter, and a fine Indian orchestra, who join some of the biggest names in entertainment for a tribute to George Harrison…

Seeing is Conducive to Belief

Folly sits so comfortably upon my fevered brow
one would easily believe that I would know how
to look at Life with a jaded, weary eye
seeing enough, and more, to know Why.

Such seems the case, as I will it to be,
an open book of a face, it looks so like me;
what’s known to be so, needs no close attention
familiar sights require no minding, nor mention.

The eye is drawn at once to the stark and new,
and sent back to sleep by successful review.
Once we find evidence we feel we understand,
curiosity languishes, dismissed at command.

Ancient sages knew the insidious value of illusion,
preachers and pundits know the power of confusion.
Each pair of eyes contains its own point of reference,
each mind sets its own standards of preference.

Seeing is believing, for those who live in thrall,
accepting what is perceived is all they ever recall.
Unknown to them, reality follows another set of rules,
Deeper, more dangerous, and no place for fools.

I am suffused with a sense of accomplishment, not without a certain degree of pride; it’s done, and done pretty well, all things considered, (a list which includes some standard confusion, cat-hammock duties, and, a demon or two, as well as a number of picayune PITA’s of no particular value…), for which I can be grateful to my own stubborn nature. I believe I’ll start the year off right, & leave it at that, so as to make at least one effort to change something in the new year…. I doubt seriously my nose will grow less round, or less red, and, it certainly won’t quit honking, so, don’t worry. Good morning…. For those ffolkes new to ECR, I should explain the titles of these Pearls of Virtual Wisdom. You see, the title is random, whereas the posts are not, hopefully. They mean nothing, and certainly have nothing to do with what is in the post. Each morning, before beginning to write anything in here, I make up the title out of my head, with no intent to connect it to the material I’m using. In fact, I try hard to make each one new, and completely odd, or as much so as my feeble brain can come up with upon first attempting to function… So, don’t worry if today’s title sounds a bit dark, or depressive; it has nothing to do with us; in fact, it has nothing to do with anything at all…. Sort of like this whole process, eh?….

All that being said, I’m making an executive decision to get on with the rest of today’s mess with no further nonsense, or sense, for that matter. In point of fact, we’re going to use the old #4 we found yesterday, which worked so well for us then, we’re employing it again today…. It works like this….

Shall we Pearl?….

Today’s video selection will push unmercifully upon your “Aww” buttons…. There is an old saw about how cats are suspicious of babies, but, I don’t think that old tale is true; it was made up by a jealous dog lover, I think, because all the cats I’ve known in my life were VERY good with babies and small children. They can be a bit grumpy, when older, but, will always be careful not to hurt a child, even when striking out in anger at tail- or ear-pulling. Here as proof is a video that will have you saying “Aww” every few seconds….. Enjoy!…. Oh, and, if it isn’t quite enough, there are LOTS more like it on the page where the link below will take you….

We the People...

“TAPPING?  You POLITICIANS!  Don’t you realize that the END of the “Wash Cycle” is a TREASURED MOMENT for most people?!” — Zippy the Pinhead

It took me a few days, but, I finally found the perfect quote from Zippy to cover any comments I might make regarding the recent fiasco on Fox, wherein the gazillion wannabe candidates for the Republican presidential nomination were gathered together into two groups to answer a bunch of soft-ball questions from the most corrupt, biased news source in the entire world. Sometimes I don’t know why they don’t just include their news broadcasts in their lineup of Reality TV shows; the so-called debate had about as much to do with actual Consensual Reality as does the life-cycle of aquatic diatoms…. Come to think of it, that might be more entertaining….

“Politicians are interested in people. Not that this is always a virtue. Fleas are interested in dogs.” — P. J. O’Rourke

Here’s another accurate observation that serves to point up my point. What’s my point? Ah, okay…. forgot that part, didn’t I? Well, most simply put, it’s this; what a load of horse shit!….. None of these men, or, rather I should be accurate, and say, all of these rich, ignorant, misogynist, racist white males, none of whom fit MY definition of a Man, have any real idea of, or any real connection to, the lives of the common citizens of this country.

Each and every one of them is, and has always been, completely insulated from any of the actual stresses and pressures felt by those average citizens; they’ve never been hungry a day in their lives. They’ve never NOT had a job, or a roof over their heads, or wondered where they were going to find the rent money for next month…. They simply have no idea, other than, possibly, as a remote concept someone once told them about at a party, of what the reality of life is for the majority of the people they are clamoring to ‘represent’ in Washington….

When I began this rant, I intended to spend more time taking some personal shots at the Asininnies who piss me off on such a regular basis….. However, I’m getting a bit tired of always preaching to the choir, so, I’ll finish this indictment with some old-school pearls from some of history’s most coherent philosophers and books…. well, and some not so coherent, but, nonetheless pertinent…. Some of the entries may prompt a comment from yours truly….

“Wheresoever the carcass is, there will the eagles be gathered together.” — New Testament — Matthew xxiv, 28

(Many people are not aware, or are in denial of the fact that eagles, even the iconic Bald American Eagle so commonly associated with America, are scavenger birds, who prefer their meat well-aged. They are NOT efficient predators, though some are good fishers….. Any who, the quote does show how our political class resembles the species of, well, vultures. whose nature they display so readily….)

“Who is worse: Lawyer, Politician, Reporter?” — Smart Bee

“The tendencies of democracies are, in all things, to mediocrity, since the tastes, knowledge and principles of the majority form the tribunal of appeal.”
— James Fenimore Cooper

“Any priest or shaman must be presumed guilty until proved innocent.” — Lazarus Long, from Robert A. Heinlein’s “Time Enough For Love”

“Why are we surprised when politicians play politics?  It’s not like they are supposed to be real adults… they are, after all, politicians and don’t have real jobs and aren’t playing around with their money.” — Max

“Politics has reached the level where we’re goin’ some if we can even get good, efficient people to vote, to say nothin’ of runnin’ for office.” — Kin Hubbard

“I know one committee I don’t want — Judiciary.  They are going to be dealing with all those issues like abortion, bussing, voting rights, prayers.  I’m not interested in those issues and I want to stay as far away from them as I can.” — Senator Dan Quayle (from “What a Waste it Is to Lose One’s Mind” — the Unauthorized Autobiography)

“It really doesn’t matter who is President. They all end up sitting in the Oval Office, sticking pins in a Dan Rather doll.” — Smart Bee

“Capitalism did not arise because capitalists stole the land, but because it was more efficient than feudalism. It will perish because it is not merely less efficient than socialism, but actually self-destructive.” — J. B. S. Haldane

“I’ve heard enough of your twaddle, Ringleader. We’ll settle this the American way — with our fists!” — Mighty Mouse, “The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse”

“Ignorance plays the chief part among men, and the multitude of words;” — Diogenes Laertius — Cleobulus, iv

There you go…. I can’t make it much clearer than that….

    I said earlier the titles have nothing to do with any of this material, and that remains true…. This poem, though, may test that contention a bit, as it is as dark as the title…. Not intentional I assure you; the title is fresh today, while the poem was first written on 8/18/2013….

Future Shocked:

Weeping, I wake;
waking, I weep, I weep.
I weep for the ages to be lost,
for the children never to be born.

Time comes calling, strident and spare,
nudging us toward the future with bony hands.
No pausing, no waiting, always away,
Frantic hearts unseen, unheard.

Spirits are dark, afraid.
And the Beast hunts, hungry and cruel,
seeking out the weak, and the foolish.

We all weep now…..

    I have nothing to add to this pearl; it’s damn near perfect…. This one will most certainly be on the Quiz, ffolkes; I’d suggest taking notes today….

“Love is shown in your deeds, not in your words.” — Fr. Jerome Cummings

“A good friend  who points out mistakes and imperfections and rebukes evil is to be respected as if he reveals a secret of hidden treasure.” — Buddha

“Morality is truth in full bloom.’ — Victor Hugo

“There is a road from the eye to the heart that does not go through the intellect.” — G.K. Chesterton

“None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.” — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

“To extend your limits, you must push them… and it often hurts.” — Smart Bee

“Appearances often are deceiving.” — Aesop

“Time will explain it all. He is a talker, and needs no questioning before he speaks.” — Euripides

“If birth is a miracle, is not death also a miracle?” — Philosopher Bee

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All things considered, not too shabby. I’ll take it, warts and all. Gosh, it must be ‘lerve’…. Now I’ve cleared most of the dross and drivel out of my head, I think I’ll go back to bed. Better yet, maybe I’ll go find some bureaucrats, myrmidons, or some other category of mundane to torment for a while…. I’m feeling particularly curmudgeonly today…. See y’all tomorrow, ffolkes; I figure that’s fair warning….
OMG! So SCARY!… Dragon Style Tai Chi!
So much for good intentions…. Having slept two full hours past my normal time to awake, I’m running WAY behind. As would be expected, this condition produces a mild feeling of panic, which I must throw aside, ignoring it to the best of my ability, if I am to have any hope of getting this done. Especially considering the state of mind I find myself in, which somewhat resembles a bowl of oatmeal…. Bland, inoffensive, and BORING…. even if it’s good for you…
So far as I can tell, that oatmeal isn’t overcooked, though, so, there is hope we may yet find our way into the body of today’s Pearl. Of course, that assumes I have the wherewithal to even produce something resembling our normal output. I’m not certain, exactly, how I’m getting THIS done, as I really don’t know what the hell I’m doing, or where I am going with this. More so than even our ‘normal’ state, we are somewhat befuddled, like a sloth awakened from a short sleep, blinking confusedly at the light, wondering just what or who I am…. SIGH….
Oh well. It’s been worse, I suppose, though I can’t recall when that might have been; past, present, future are all dark to me. In fact, so dark, rather than fumble around any further, with no clue as to what may occur next, I think I’ll use this handy, dandy plot device I found laying here, to get us out of this poorly conceived, yet hopefully mundane effort to distract y’all from the actual mess we’ve come to inhabit. I can’t do anything about the excessive sweating y’all had to undergo, but, I will loan y’all some deodorant to get you home without offending your car’s co-inhabitants.
In addition, we won’t charge any extra for the extra time it takes to clean off the debris from your clothing; it is, after all, our own fault, for trying to keep up with the times. Sad to say, we’ve never been able to catch up, but, it’s fun to keep trying. Since I can’t think of a single thing to do to keep this up any longer, I suggest you hang on….. this will be a very sharp, fast dive back into reality, where we may once again set our imaginations free…..
Shall we Pearl?
We the People...
From 1/29/2015:
“A power has risen up in the government greater than the people themselves, consisting of many and various and powerful interests, combined into one mass, and held together by the cohesive power of the vast surplus in the banks.” — Johann L. Uhland (1787-1862) — Speech, May 27, 1836
Zowie! Eureka! I knew I’d heard this somewhere before, but, couldn’t remember the author’s name. In stating this observation, made not long after the US government was formed, the author takes the hand of Thomas Jefferson, who expressed his fear of exactly this happenstance, in numerous letters to friends before, and after, the signing of the Constitution. He recognized the overpowering ambition and thirst for power so obvious in those who embrace it, attempting to warn his fellow citizens, many times….
As is plain to see, nobody paid the slightest attention, whereupon the bankers, in close conjunction with their myrmidons, i.e., the pundits and lawyers, continued to pursue their evil intent, to secure their hold over government, and, thus, society…. They’ve been so successful, we see in today’s world, they control every level of the national scene; witness the number of Republican presidential candidates who have been sucking up to the Koch brothers, and the Citizens United PAC, with their unlimited pile of money, in use in today’s world buying the loyalty of every single politician they can pervert to their insane desire to make the world over in their own image…. It doesn’t seem to matter at all to them that image is a clear, crisp photograph of the worst HELL imaginable, or that it would entail oppressing 99% of the human race….
Why are many scientists using lawyers for medical experiments instead of rats?
 a)  There are more lawyers than rats.
 b)  The scientist’s don’t become as emotionally attached to them.
 c)  There are some things that even rats won’t do for money.
~~ Smart Bee ~~
Gee, do ya think I’ve lost some of my respect for lawyers, and their second-slimiest clients, the bankers? (First place in my hell is reserved for pimps, and those who abuse women, children, or  animals…. which, of course, lawyers and bankers do by proxy, with their usual complete indifference to the suffering of others….) Why no, of course not. I’ve lost ALL of it, with what I consider damn good reason, based on 64 years of observing the human drama, along with my own personal experience with both categories of asshole…. The only respect for any of them I have, is for those who actually HELP people, without considering what they can get out of it, other than their own satisfaction for helping people find justice, and a reasonable fee for that help, whether the fee is taken in pies & chickens, eternal gratitude, or simply cash….
In keeping with today’s theme of picking on lawyers and bankers, and, to save energy for my upcoming battle, I decided to pick out an old school pearl, aimed at the former, as they’re an easier target, all in all…. They’re just SO…… weaselly! Well, there are some are exceptions, sure, but, the others infest the world so prominently, the good ones are hard to find…. Ah well, here are some observations about them, from Smart Bee, and a number of other people who feel the same as most everybody else, about those lawyers who use their skills to benefit themselves, showing complete indifference as to whether it benefits anyone else….
Liar, n.: A lawyer with a roving commission. — Ambrose Bierce, “The Devil’s Dictionary”
“A group of white South Africans recently killed a black lawyer because he was black. That was wrong. They should have killed him because he was a lawyer.” — A. Whitney Brown
“Always take a lawyer with you, and bring another lawyer to watch him.” — Bo Diddly’s Observation on the Law
“Fleas can be taught nearly everything a lawyer can.” — Smart Bee
“Here’s an amazing story. A man in Orlando, Florida, was hit by eight cars in a row and only one stopped. The first seven drivers thought he was a  lawyer. The eighth was a lawyer.” — Jay Leno
“If a lawyer and an IRS agent were both drowning, and you could only save one of them, would you go to lunch or read the paper?” — Smart Bee
“In a man’s world…simian aptitudes are rated high, and so not too many women get in. To succeed as a lawyer, for example, a woman would have to throttle two of her chief attributes: her disdain for the petty accumulations of useless knowledge, and her sharp feeling for the truth. What men in their imbecility consistently mistake for a deficiency of intelligence in women is merely an incapacity for mastering small and trivial tricks.” — H. L. Mencken, Chicago _Sunday Tribune_, January 8, 1928
“In the Norse mythology Loki originally was on the side of the rest of the gods, helping them once or twice using particularly nasty forms of trickery. He was a cunning negotiator with a talent for technicalities. He was sort of the Norse equivalent of a lawyer, no doubt the reason they tied him down in a pit dripping acidic venom on him.” — Martin Terman
“How many lawyers does it take to change a light bulb? You won’t find a lawyer who can change a light bulb. Now, if you’re looking for a lawyer to screw a light bulb… ” — Smart Bee
LAWYER: A professional advocate hired to bend the law on behalf of a paying client; for this reason considered the most suitable background for entry into politics. — Definition from “THE CYNIC’S DICTIONARY”
Needless to say, I could do this forever, no sweat, or guilt; there are already nine pearls, and I’ve only used three of the ten pages of quotes I’ve collected on the subject. But, I suppose there ARE more productive things we could all be doing. This is pretty cool, but, as with all good things, it can’t last forever…. Onward, into the day….
Oh, hell…. Naturally, AFTER I’ve finished, I find the PERFECT pearl for this group. Since we’ve already completed it, I’ll just tack it here on the end, where it will enjoy its highlighted position; I call it perfect because it takes a shot at two categories at once, both of which are current players in my personal drama…. This one tells it like it is, for sure and for certain….
“Doctors are the same as lawyers; the only difference is that lawyers merely rob you, whereas doctors rob you and kill you too.” — Anton Chekhov
gigoid has spoken…
So be it.
NowMe 2~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Comedy_Tragedy
    In order to avoid blame, and keep to the now ruined schedule, here is another of my older poems….
Fine and Good, Good and Fine
A pig in a poke’s got nothing on me,
cuz I’m as confused as a man can be.
This ol’ world’s got me spinnin’ around
cussin’ and spittin’, a penny for a pound.
Forty ‘leven times since I was a kid, well,
I’ve fallen in love, ‘least too close to tell.
Every damn time, it all went to crap,
Forty ‘leven times I’ve felt like a sap.
‘Course, each time it happens, I forget the last;
why not? I’m havin’ such a blast….
Livin’ in each moment, filled with joie de vivre,
’til it’s all gone away again, nothin’ left up my sleeve.
Don’t want y’all to think I’m sad or blue,
life’s full of sorrow, lots for me, and/or you..
T’other side of that coin, we can be glad,
is joyful love, and that ain’t at all bad.
My road’s been littered with parts o’my heart,
each one colored with trust, which ain’t always smart.
Yet, long as I don’t lose my connection to joy,
I’ll find my own true love, and be a happy boy.
It’s been some kinda fun, even when I’d take a fall,
and doin’ it over makes no sense at all, at all
Day after day, I keep on keepin’ on, as it’s said;
Guess I’ll keep on doin’ that ’til I’m dead.
‘Nuff said….
Morning muse
    So, I have no idea where this pearl came from…. I found it sitting here when I came down to start on this section. I’m not entirely sure what it’s saying, but, it definitely has something to say…. I’d pay attention, if I were y’all… there might be something in there more important than it seems at first read…. It won’t be on the Quiz, unless, of course, they’re lying to me, too….. Ah well, it’s a fun read, anyway, so, enjoy!….
“The most effective kind of education is that a child should play amongst lovely things.” — Plato (BC 427?-347?)
“I know now that there’s one thing you’ve all overlooked: intelligence and education that hasn’t been tempered by human affection isn’t worth a damn.” — Daniel Keyes, “Flowers for Algernon”
“Everything is leaf, and through this simplicity the greatest diversity becomes possible.” — Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832)
“All cats are NOT gray after midnight.  Endless variety …” — Lazarus Long
“If it is not seemly, do it not; if it is not true, speak it not.” — Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (121-180 AD) — Meditations, xii, 17
“We become wiser by adversity; prosperity destroys our appreciation of the right.” — Seneca
“Living Dead the path is chosen; to live forever is to die forever. To not know when you’ll die is to find life wherever you are.” — Alagad
“The chief aim of wisdom is to enable one to bear with the stupidity of the ignorant.” — Xystus I
Ne te confundant illegitimi  (Don’t let the bastards get you down…) (alt: Don’t let illusion confuse you…) (Literal: lest you confuse Illegitimate) — Smart Bee
I’m not going to even THINK about proofing, as it might take longer than the original creation. A swift passage through rough waters….
Ffolkes,
“Man is a clever animal who behaves like an imbecile.”
Ridin’ a whirlwind ain’t nothin’ compared to this. But, then, I never asked for any favors, so, whinin’ ain’t gonna quiet the wind. I s’pose that means I gotta either tame this big ugly bastard, or, pull in my spurs and jump…. Don’t seem to have a lot o’time to make up my mind, neither…. I guess I’ll do this…. Mind yer whiskers, there, pardner…
Well. I believe that will be quite enough of THAT. Not that I have anything better in mind, but…. Nope. Not going there, either…. I promised myself, no phlegm. You can thank me later.
Let’s begin again, shall we? Okay, okay, you don’t have to. I have to. If you’ll just…. never mind. Please just have a seat, okay? We can’t move until we’re all seated, & we need to get this slow on the road…..  No that’s not a typo. Boy, I’m really lost today, aren’t we? And, not just in voice agreement. Now, if I could feel my fingers, or, even a couple of my brain cells, I could start over….. Ah, I know. Coffee…. I knew I’d forgotten something….
Better. Not good, but, better. Phil isn’t going to like this, you know….. How’s this. I won’t mention any of it if y’all don’t. It might make his blood pressure go up, so, it’s best if we just keep this little glitch to ourselves, okay? Okay. Now, if y’all have your earpieces in place, I’ll fire off the starting gun, again, to let the pilot know we can leave. Be sure to duck, we’re not out of the live ammo yet….
Bang! (I know, but, what do you expect, off the cuff, at this hour? Raymond Chandler? Marvel Comics?… I’ll bet Raymond Chandler didn’t have to type with vertigo…. wimp…) Anyway, that should do it.
Hmm… We’re not moving. Hang on, ffolkes, I’ll be right back…. Oh, NO! Damn it! I knew I shouldn’t have fired in that direction. Blast and damn, that the third pilot this year, and it’s only February. Phil’s not gonna like THIS, either…. Shit, I HATE driving this thing!…..
Well. It’s my own fault, I guess, so, nothing for it. If y’all will resume your seats, I’ll pull the pilot ejection seat lever….. there. He’s gone…. Now, all I have to do is sit down, here, fire up the engines, like this, and, we’re good to go. Ooh, isn’t that a pretty sight! Luigi would never come this close to the bridge….
See how easy that is, when it’s only a blog, and a series of literary tricks & foolishness (no other words fit…), serving as the latest poor attempt at wit, or unreasonable facsimile thereof, to grace the intro section…. Gad, sometimes, I can’t believe my own gall…
Never mind, let’s get on with it, before this deteriorates any further…..
While following up on a purchase I made online the other day, I was looking through old email from the company, one of which mentioned the following artist’s name. Seeing it reminded me of how many times I had listened to, and enjoyed, his music during my youth…. It’s always an easy listen to hear the familiar finger-picking guitar openings, followed by his strong, evocative voice, sharing visions of great beauty and passion, with intimately personal insight into the human condition…. a true troubadour of his time…
Dont keep calm
“Ask a man which way he is going to vote, and he will probably tell you.
Ask him, however, why, and vagueness is all.”
~~ Bernard Levin, in “Daily Mail”, 1964 ~~
What a perfect opening to discuss the gullibility of the common man, brainwashed into perfect docility, willing to believe whatever they see or hear, as long as it is spoken by a talking head, or someone wearing a suit, or a badge, or, a cassock…. These sad excuses for human beings have allowed themselves to become the ideal slave, fully indoctrinated to the point they are unaware of their slavery at all, believing their state of existence to be just the way it should be, by all they have ever learned…. The statement above, while perfectly apt, is limited, in the sense it is actually applicable to damn near every thought that passes for an opinion in the minds of the average American….
Go ahead. Ask almost anyone WHY they perform any particular act in their life; the most likely response you’ll receive will be along the lines of “well, that’s how I learned to do it”, or some other variation of “that’s how it’s always been done around here.” The video selection from yesterday, regarding the 5 Monkey Experiment,  demonstrated the exact series of steps necessary to shape the behavior any simian on this planet, whether hairy, or hairless, into permanently exhibiting the desired behavior/frame of mind. This particular method of behavioral modification is particularly dangerous, as well as effective, for those being shaped ultimately never know they’ve been manipulated at all….
For millennia, in the real world, by using the concept of money (or the withholding of money) as the metaphorical representation of water in the experiment, these canny, insanely sociopathic humans who essentially control the world, who have enslaved the greater portion of mankind for thousands of years of our history, (Hard to believe? Read it, ffolkes. I have…. it’s pretty clear….), have used this exact technique to create the mindset they desire in the general run of humans, who are brainwashed to accept the lies almost from the day they are born; for certain, the assault on their minds begins soon thereafter.
First, their minds are shaped by parents, already programmed to pass on their misconceived beliefs to their offspring, as guided by the cadre of corrupted manipulators in Religion, the preachers, who encourage/promote the submission of individual will to the authority of temporal and spiritual leaders, at the alleged behest of an omnipotent supernatural being, sealing the conditioning more strongly with every lie they tell.
This manipulation, upon which so many other lies are predicated, is based on the promise of life unending, immortality, but, only for those who submit to accepting, those who choose to believe, without proof, relying only on faith…. The carrot in one hand, (i.e., eternal life) distracts the gullible from the reality in which they exist…. The poor saps are then shown the stick, i.e., the same immortality, withheld; an eternity of suffering and misery, to add fear to the mix, strengthening the behavioral modification, balancing the ultimate reward, promised to them in return for their submission, with the threat of eternal punishment, as the implied reward for independent thought.
Few human children escape at least SOME of this conditioning; fortunately, some of us can throw it off, having apparently inherited a “doubt” gene, or some peculiar combination of chromosomes which influence development of the “crap detector” part of our brain, sensitizing it, thus,  affording us some protection from enforced ignorance.
I don’t know about y’all, but, when I was a kid, my crap detector went off all the time, which I consider fortunate, for it provided me with the impetus to become one of the dubious…. In this respect, sadly, I seem to be, if not alone, at least, isolated from very many others, who may have perceived the same evidence as have I…. I think quite a few of THEM end up reading this blog…. But, they’re not the ones who need to follow this train of thought.
Once one sees clearly the problem, it only becomes more complicated to find the courage to face up to the only viable solution. As far as I can see,  in order to be capable of changing much of anything in the society in which we all live, any tactics and strategy we use will, of necessity, require us to give up at least one of the ethical positions which led us to the independence of mind we enjoy, to wit: in order to cause those who would rule to change, we would have to became very much like them. We would have to agree to kill, thus giving up that which makes us most human….
I can see no alternative, at this point, to simply removing them from the gene pool, never again allowing them to reproduce whatever sequence of chromosomes that produces people with no connection to their feelings, in essence, who possess no conscience, no restraint upon their most viciously avaricious desires for power and control of others…. Our species cannot allow these base parts of our nature to assume ascendancy, not if we wish to remain truly human, or wish to ever reach our true potential.
You see, they won’t change; as well as possessing the ability to ignore the pain of others, these semi-humans are also mean, tough as an old shoe, and have been in control, or, at minimum, have held the illusion of control in a real sense, for a very long time. They’re not going to give up their privileged position, to which they feel entitled by right of conquest, just because we ask them nicely….. They’re just not built that way…. So, to make them go away, we must, at least for a time, become like them, able to kill without mercy, in order to save ourselves, and those innocents among us, who have never even known they are slaves…..
It’s a very, very difficult ethical and moral decision; how many of us will be able to do our Duty to mankind? Can we put aside that which makes us human, and still be able to pick it back up when we have achieved our goal, to replace insanity with reason, by removing them all from existence?…. So far in history, no one has shown the ability to show such restraint and will; power corrupts those who use it, and, all too often,  as Pete would say, the new boss is the same as the old boss….
I don’t know about y’all, but, the one thing that may just push me over that edge, is the thought of how bloody useless the whole issue is…. From a cosmic standpoint, in a hundred, or a thousand, or a hundred thousand years, we won’t matter to the Universe any more than the Dodo mattered to us…. and we’ll be just as extinct, if current evidence is any indication…. The futility of the whole deal just pisses me off, no end….
I swear, IF there is a God, and He is anything remotely similar to what we’ve been told, then, when I get a chance, I’m going to spit right in His beady little eyes…. He’s got a lot of fucking cruelty, and stupidity, to answer for, in my book…
SIGH…. Oh well, so much for another good mood; I kicked it right to the curb, again, didn’t I? I think I’ll go eat some worms….
So be it.
There are times when nothing will do for me but one of the classics, especially when they are so appropriate to the times, as this one, by an old friend…. I tend to agree with Dr. Baring, in Gaudy Night; Wordsworth IS rather underrated today….
The world is too much with us; late and soon.
The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers:
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;
For this, for everything, we are out of tune,
It moves us not.–Great God! I’d rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn.
It’s been a while since SB gave up such a hefty, yet, diverse sprinkling of pearls. This one can only be called a Harlequin pearl, or, as in the biblical tale, a Pearl of Many Colors…. Enjoy, ffolkes… I suggest you don’t bother to try too hard for meaning; just let it all wash over you, looking forward to the dazed, flushed feeling waiting for you at the end, when all nine of them have been consumed, hopefully with relish…. or, perhaps, a spot of ‘spice of life’….
“A zygote is a gamete’s way of producing more gametes. This may be the purpose of the universe.” — Lazarus Long, from Robert A. Heinlein’s “Time Enough For Love”
“Anarchism is the only philosophy which brings to man the consciousness of himself; which maintains that God, the State, and society are non-existent, that their promises are null and void, since they can be fulfilled only through man’s subordination. Anarchism is therefore the teacher of the unity of life; not merely in nature, but in man.” — Emma Goldman “Anarchism: What It Really Stands For”
“Americans are so enamored of equality they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom.” — Alexis de Tocqueville
“People don’t like the truth, its depressing.” — Fr. Stan O’Konsky, S.J.
“Democracy, which is a charming form of government, full of variety and disorder, and dispensing a sort of equality to equals and unequals alike.  — Plato, The Republic. Book VIII. 558
MISS, n.  The title with which we brand unmarried women to indicate that they are in the market.  Miss, Missis (Mrs.) and Mister (Mr.) are the three most distinctly disagreeable words in the language, in sound and sense.  Two are corruptions of Mistress, the other of Master.  In the general abolition of social titles in this our country they miraculously escaped to plague us.  If we must have them let us be consistent and give one to the unmarried man.  I venture to suggest Mush, abbreviated to Mh. — Ambrose Bierce, “The Devil’s Dictionary”
“Capitalism says you can win, Socialism says you can break even, and Religion says you can join another game.” —  Smart Bee, being a smart aleck
“Imagination is the one weapon in the war against reality.” — Jules de Gaultier
Having thus discharged my chosen Duty, I shall trouble thee no more. I shall, with appropriate dignity, bid thee adieu for another day. Perhaps, by tomorrow, I shall have managed to lose this silly formal attitude, which seems to have afflicted my fingers here at the end of today’s effort. Ah well, such is life, as they say. Now, if I can only figure out who they are, I can go strike them repeatedly about the head and shoulders, for their asininity…. See y’all tomorrow, ffolkes….
Day the next 006
    ‘Tis a sad old world we live in, isn’t it? The sculpture you see above, located in a courtyard on the grounds of Trinity College, in Dublin, Ireland, is certainly a perfect metaphor for a lot of my ranting, wouldn’t you agree? When I took the picture, I didn’t realize it, but, looking at it now, especially with the oh-so-perfect pearl above it, really drives that point home, for me….
Since the quote and picture worked so well, I’m going to try a new method of starting these Pearls, in which the intro section does exactly what it is intended to do, to wit: introduce today’s Pearl…. Let’s see how it goes….
Today, I have much to do out in the BBR, so, the Pearl you see will be a bit truncated, if only in terms of fresh material…. A quick video pick, a modified ranting section, and some archived material should cover it all nicely, I think…. With no further need for the usual drama and build-up of angst, we shall proceed to the day’s effort, just as if we did this every day…. I think you’re going to enjoy this, if only for the change of pace….
But, please, don’t forget to fasten your seat belts, and keep your thinking caps handy, okay? Right….
Shall we Pearl?
This particular collection of classical music is one of my favorite compilations…. Listening to Mozart has an advantage over most classical music, in that it stimulates brain activity, while simultaneously calming the nerves, and soothing the psyche…. You will need this in order to be able to successfully navigate the ranting section today…. Trust me on this….
I don’t have the time, nor the energy, to rant today, though my angst really needs to be released…. It is especially powerful since seeing the following three posts on talesfromtheconspiratum.com. Read these, and you’ll get the same effect as a rant based on the above quote…. It will have to do for today….
Geezer to Congress, with Love
Politicos don’t care much ’bout seniors and their ilk,
except for their money, I thinks;
Though they talk as if they’d cozen them in silk,
what they actually do, it stinks.
“The banks are failing, we can’t allow that!”,
steal from the aged, that’s their plan.
“Their life’s ending, that’s plainly where they’re at,”
lie shamelessly, because they can.
Maybe just once, if we all act together,
it couldn’t miss.
Right on their shoes, no matter the weather,
take careful aim, and piss.
Why the hell not?
It’s worth a shot!
In re: freshness, since the poem section is only half and half, I’ll put together an old-school pearl for this last section today…. It’s a bit shorter, and takes less time than another rant…. (1576-1625) — Upon an “Honest Man’s Fortune”
Nap time 2SFGATE Day In Pictures, August 16, 2014
At my age, what will a few more tears do that hasn’t already been done? It isn’t as if I’d never felt enough emotion to make them; in fact, my passion, in life, and for life, is such that my tears often burst free from the restraints I place upon them, and I cry freely….. Since being diagnosed with PTSD, over thirty years ago, my tears have been much closer to the surface, with fewer blocks between them and being set free, than they were throughout the first years of my life…. In fact, there are times, still today, when I awaken from sleep to find them flowing down my face, without a single idea as to why….. It’s a bit disconcerting, as you may imagine….
But, it always passes, if only due to the very human skill of denial, that innate, natural exercise of foolish will power; this ability to reject reality, for us humans, allows us to completely ignore an entire set of perceptions, as if they did not exist, thus insulating ourselves from the emotional content of those perceptions….. If you stop to think about it, this ability to deny the truth is how Reagan, Ford, and both Shrubs, got elected, and how much of the stuff we hear from politicians is bought by the public; denial is a very powerful force in humans, and, when combined with stupidity, is virtually impossible to contend with, at least, on a rational basis….
I’m not at all sure why this subject came up this morning, other than the picture having an effect on me all out of proportion to its cuteness factor…. I guess I reacted more to the very obvious, immensely high level of “Aww….” that is so clearly present in the lion’s family dynamic….. Dad is being very patient with Junior, who is determined to get his/her pop up to play, though, apparently, both are still half-asleep….
I can’t help it, I look at it, and the tears form, threatening to flow down my face uncontrolled; the feelings themselves reaching back thirty-five years, to connect with the time when my own son would do something as cute….. Even as I type this, which provides SOME distance, I feel the pressure in my chest, & behind my eyes, that presages such emotional outbursts…. In our culture, as you might imagine, this tendency to break out in tears at a moment’s notice has some rather embarrassing side-effects, such as the way people look at me when it happens on a bus, or in a store…. Quite the pisser, I can tell you….
(And that doesn’t even address the severe danger in which it places the person in public, who has the failure of grace so far as to be the one who is laughing…. It’s lucky for me I have excellent control over my impulses, or I’d be involved in more than one legal mess, for having aced some idiot before I could stop myself…. It’s come close a few times, but, I’ve managed to avoid homicide, thus far….. Well, if you don’t count that one in Tuscon; the charges WERE dropped, once they showed the video….)
Ah well, it could be worse, I suppose; I could have no control over it whatsoever. At least no one can accuse me of being a typical American male, who refuses to cry at his mother’s funeral, or hug his own children…. That sort of emotional denial can become an unbreakable habit, with some rather nasty side effects on one’s family. The insistence on being the Marlboro Man, (a nasty delusion, to be sure; remember, the Marlboro Man died of lung cancer at the age of 45…. truth….), is a big part of how we Americans have reached the stage where NONE of the policies and beliefs that now are being touted as “American” have an real relation to truth, or anything resembling what is actually true in Reality….
Oh the hell with it; I’m going to just say it straight, and hard…. I regard the typical American male’s emotional stultification to be a big part of the reason our culture is dying…. It is a symptom of the sort of delusional adherence to an outdated, never rational outlook toward life, and toward other people, that has led us to the position we are now facing, with the threat of imminent species extinction. That may sound a bit overly dramatic, but, to be honest with you, it’s not only NOT overly dramatic, it really doesn’t even come close to describing how far along the path to perdition we have come…. Things in Reality are much worse than anyone out there in the public venue will admit, ffolkes, and THAT is the truth….
But, even in this case, or, maybe ESPECIALLY in this case, the truth isn’t going to get us any further down the page, or get this anywhere closer to posting; ranting in the intro seems to be developing into a habit…. At this point, only some drastic intervention by yours truly will be able to save this Pearl from its own form of extinction… I guess I’ll take advantage of this little-known corridor, right HERE; it should get us out of here, & back on the regular trail to the oyster beds…. Mind the steps, please, and don’t pay any attention to anything you see, or hear…. Trust me, you don’t want to know….
Shall we Pearl?…..
“If possible, try to find a way to come downstairs that doesn’t involve going bump, bump, bump, on the back of your head. -” — Pooh in Winnie the Pooh A.A. Milne, English author (1882-1956)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As noted in previous posts, this week’s Pearls are being composed at home, ahead of time, then posted each morning when I go to a local coffee house, one with free Wifi to connect to the internet…. It’s a pain, to be sure, which should be over by Thursday, when my new service is scheduled to be set up…. But, as it’s a chosen duty, whattyagonnado? In the meantime, I’m using a lot of archived material… I’m trying to use stuff at least a couple of years old, to prevent too much repetition of purpose, but, I’m pretty sure anyone looking back at this week will find some anomalous entries…. So be it…. Here is a nice little religirant from 2012, which will give a bit more insight into the discussion in the introduction today…..

From 5/15/2012:

However many holy words you read,
However many you speak,
What good will they do you
If you do not act on upon them?

~~ Buddha ~~

My religious upbringing was pretty casual, since my parents weren’t particularly devout, at least, not until after most of us had left home. Most of my life we attended Presbyterian churches, but were never heavily involved. The whole story behind Christianity always seemed pretty improbable to me, even at the tender age of four or five when it was first introduced in Sunday School, where the kids in Presbyterian churches were sent during services to keep from either distracting the minister during his sermon, or to distract their parents from their nap during said sermon. (You can’t fool a four-year old about motivation….)

As I grew older, the things about church that first bothered me continued to grow in number, fueled most heavily by the actions of the church-goers themselves. It always seemed to me, what was said in church on Sunday, and what actually happened out in the real world, had nothing to do with each other. Nobody I could see was acting in a Christian manner anywhere but in church, and even then, it seemed pretty self-serving, as if the folks who were discussing morality were showing off for the preacher, more than they were invested in the morals themselves. (You can’t fool a teenager about hypocrisy….)

As my reading list expanded, I found that my suspicions and objections to Christian churches intensified, as I became more aware of what actually went on out in the real world…. As I continued to be exposed to more religions and philosophies, it seemed, at least on the surface, that the proponents of the other big religions in the world were no less hypocritical in their actions than were the Christians, and further evidence of the accuracy of that observation has been in the news daily for a long time. (You can’t bullshit an old bullshitter….)

Nobody in the entire world, as far as I can see, really buys into any of the religions, unless they are so poor that they grasp onto the charitable aspects of their respective creeds in order to survive. I can find no religion, anywhere in the world, that has significantly advanced the cause of morality in humans; it generally has a negative effect instead, providing their constituents with reasons to practice immorality, as long as it is directed against those in other sects.

So, I continue to wage my own personal battle against falling into the ignorance of how reality really works; I refuse to accept the blinders, and the limits on my reason, that all churches demand of their followers. Instead, I prefer to promote rationality and reason as an approach to life; I’ve never seen any sense in encouraging people to submit to what, to me, is just another lie disguised as something supposedly “good for me”…. and I find the following statement to be extremely accurate, not only in the context of when it was written, but in today’s complex world of the future, as well…..

“The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting.  It has been found difficult, and left untried.” — Gilbert K. Chesterton (1874-1936), “What’s Wrong with the World

Note from the future: In truth, I really don’t see how I can improve this by adding more; it’s pretty straightforward, and the ending paragraph, and pearl, finish it off perfectly…. Well done, lad!…. (Okay, yes, my arm & shoulder hurt now, from the excessive back patting…. we’ll go on anyway….)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The poem(s) I feel are still inside, and not ready to come out…. Here, then, is another of mine, which is the perfect poem to follow the previous section…. I hope you enjoy it….
Rejection
“Jesus loves me, this I know,
For the Bible tells me so…”
I’d be crying a river, I thought
if ever such crap I bought.
Sorry if it hurts your sense of style,
but, hypocrisy always gives me bile.
Being lied to accidentally is okay,
but, deliberate lies make me angry, and fey.
Oh, God, hear what I pray!
Keep me from your followers today.
Having to listen to so much that is wrong
makes me puke, before it makes me strong.
I don’t know why it isn’t clear to other folks,
which is alright, you know, different strokes.
But, why should that mean that they must
force me to believe, or fail in trust?
Spare me the lies, and the make-believe,
fairy tales are easier to hear, and to weave.
They give us a lesson which we can feel
but don’t pretend at all to be real.
Reality can scare us, that’s a given fact,
still, met with care it will leave us mostly intact.
Met without fear, standing tall and alone
Life will allow us to make it our own.
Folly beckons, and so many follow
mass delusions seem to me most hollow.
I’ll have to stick to my own chosen way
while so many go so sadly astray.
It’s lonely at times, it may seem sad,
but really isn’t, and I’m quite glad,
that knowledge is always stronger than fear,
year after year, tear after tear…..
But, you know, everything else is up to you…. For sure, and for certain, how you feel about it is completely up to you, isn’t it?…. Yep….
No matter how many times I’ve done this (according to WP, that number stands at 1148…. just sayin’….), there are times when it comes as a surprise when I reach this final section, still with a lot left to say, but, for all intents and purposes, I’m done….. SIGH…. I guess I could find drama in just about ANYTHING, wouldn’t you say? Since I’m actually not overly fond of drama, we’ll just go along with the dictates of reality, & end this here, in spite of all I have yet to give….. There’s always tomorrow, right? Right…. See y’all then, if I’m reasonably lucky, & continue to suffer from my own delusions of adequacy…..
Y’all take care out there,
and May the Metaphorse be with you;
Phlebotomists do it with their fingers…..
Ffolkes,
Artfully, he dodged the bullet, turning to watch it plow into the wall by his head. Slapping one palm to his forehead, he gave out a great shout, “ki aieeeeeee!”, striking to the left with his other hand, shattering the small bird statue on the pedestal. The bird screamed, and dropped the tiny silver gun….. As entropy increased, gravity grew weak, then strong, tossing the players about the room like ten-pins in a row. Finally, a loud gong sounded, whereupon everyone dutifully trooped into the great hall to hear the daily proclamation from the beloved Leader in Mystery. Headache gone, thanks to the bird’s scream, he joined the parade, knowing he would find what he sought in the great hall…. His quest neared the end, and he could almost taste the cold dish of revenge, demanded by the blood of his murdered master…. Not for nothing was he called, “Pujin, the Merciless, Nearly-Master Killer of the Temple of the Divine Duck…..
Okay, so it fell apart at the end…. I couldn’t keep my tongue planted any longer in my cheek, and had to let it show its nose…. Hmm, that doesn’t quite sound right, does it? Never mind, we’ll pretend none of it happened, and just go on with today’s Pearl, or what passes for the creative process around her on mornings, like this, when I can feel Murphy staring a hole in my back, waiting for me to approach something with paint, or cold water, or poop of some kind, to try to get me to fuck up, so he can hit me with whatever he has in mind….. the asshole…..
You would think that after all this time, he would find someone new and simpler to fool, as I’m getting pretty wise to his games…. He’s a master, of course, at making us think we have him beat, so I don’t fool myself into thinking like that for long, but, a newbie surely ought to be more fun than an old curmudgeon like me who doesn’t even have the wherewithal to get overly upset any more at his shenanigans….. But, then, nobody ever said Murphy was smart, whereas he is often described as an asshole… the asshole….
I note a bit of symmetry in those last two paragraphs, at least at the end…. Too bad we had to subject ourselves to the tender ministrations of a force of nature to achieve that, eh? I’m not complaining about Murphy, as that has been shown to be a futile pastime…. No, I’m just blathering again, trying to fill up space for the intro section, which asked me yesterday to avoid anything fancy or involved today, as it has a mind to take a day off from the strain of coming up with a new way to open up these Pearls each day….. Which is to say, of course, that my own mind is wanting the day off today… I only wish I could indulge that request, but, we’ve got stuff to do….
Well, no, we don’t, that was a lie…. I was just trying to…. well, never mind, a lie is a lie, and there’s no excuse, so I won’t offer any….. I’ll just ignore it, and go on to the daily dive, which, given the crap I’ve created here, could conceivably get a bit dangerous for the uninitiated…. Please watch your step, I have a feeling it may get a bit tricky to navigate today….. Shall we Pearl?…..
ISMISM:  Belief in any distinctive doctrine, theory or practice. Ismism was   started up in the mid-1980s by a splinter group from “Atheists For Christ”. Ismism meetings gained quick popularity, and Ismism leader Ralph Snider travelled the world promoting his paper “Why I Argue A Lot”. The followers of Ismism are generally agreed to be very confused people. — Daniel Bowen’s TOXIC CUSTARPEDIA
Strangely enough, I believe a Church of ISISM was founded, as well, though not by Mr. Snider, to my knowledge….. What I do know is that the Board of Directors of the Amtrak system are probably charter members of both the church and the movement itself; this much is made plain by the obviously fucktarded business practices as carried out by their employees. The people who run the national train system here in the US are obviously those guys who got the C’s, D’s and F’s in business school, because their employees don’t seem to give much of a shit whether they do their work or not….. Allow me to describe my own experience with the results of their asinine inability to run a viable business….
The train station in Martinez, CA is rather nice, having been built within the last 20 years or so, so it’s still fairly clean, and most everything seems to work, except, of course the vending machines, which are programmed to steal money rather than give snacks. Oh, and there was the snack bar itself, which was closed during the period prior to the train’s arrival, choosing to ignore the 50 or 60 potential customers waiting to board the train… No sense in trying to make TOO much money, now, is there? Seems to be their attitude, because I’ve never seen the place open, no matter what time I’ve come there to meet trains….. They just like to have the open counter there, so people can look at all the stuff they can’t buy….
I’d booked a coach seat for my trip, but was not looking forward to a 14 hour train ride sitting up, so, when I saw that the trains were advertising on-board Wifi, I decided to pay the OUTRAGEOUS amount (more than THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS more than the coach seat, already more than a hundred….. for what is essentially a big bus….) they wanted for a sleeper compartment, the smallest they have, called a “roomette”. It’s almost big enough for a normal sized child to sit in comfortably, but for me, a Boeing 747 wide body, it was somewhat cramped, if I tried to stand up. That was okay, as there was no attendant assigned to my car, as I found out after having to haul my suitcase up a stairway designed to accommodate hobbits, or short, skinny elves, and I needed to sit down to recover from getting on board….
An attendant from the car behind mine showed up after about 20 minutes, when I was informed that she wouldn’t be able to turn down my bed, as she was still working on the car behind her, and wouldn’t be done for a while…. So, if I wanted to lie down to sleep, I had to drop down the upper bunk, get the mattress waiting there, then figure out how to make the two facing chairs turn into a bed to put it on… Well, this was too much for my back to accomplish, so I just tried to crawl up on the bunk to sleep, after the ordeal of trying to remove clothing in a space not big enough to turn around or bend over, once the bunk was down… all without hurting my back…. ‘Twas indeed a small miracle…..Climbing up was another ordeal, whereupon I found the only light control was down below, so rather than try to go down to find it, I tried to sleep a while with the light shining in my face….
Between the light in my eyes, the rocking and noise of the train, and my old bladder, my sleep lasted about 30 minutes…. Getting up, throwing on pants, using the head, and coming back to my tiny little space was so exhausting I decided to just sit up rather than try to get back in the bunk… so, I settled down to sleep in the chair, which I could have done much better in one of the big coach seats, as it turns out….. Sleeping fitfully from about 2 AM until about 6:30, I saw nobody, train staff, or passengers, stirring about…. I sat up, painfully finishing the Pearl I’d worked on for that morning…. painfully, because the alleged table was about the size of a postage stamp, with nowhere to use the mouse, but in the air next to the table…. not terribly useful.
About 0700, I took the computer and walked back to the Parlor Lounge, where the WiFi was supposed to be available, when the car was scheduled to open, at 0700, according to the literature with my ticket. The attendant there was still working on getting the car ready, so I asked him when I might have the service I paid for…. He informed me that it was hooked up, but only worked when the train was in Klamath Falls at the station…. the rest of the trip, the mountains and terrain blocked the signal from the network…. “Brilliant,” I thought, “Not only can I not get my Pearl posted, I have nothing at all to do for the next five and a half hours….”, having not brought a book, thinking the computer, and internet, would entertain me….. SIGH…. I was beginning to believe I had somehow died without noticing, and was now on  the TRAIN TO HELL…..
I went back to my “roomette”… On the way, I saw the young lady ostensibly covering the service in my room, and asked her if I could get the breakfast service in my room, as advertised. She said she would be there “in a few minutes”…. 30 minutes later, she shows up, takes my order, acting as if she was doing me a favor, and disappears, with no word as to when it might be expected…. After about 45 minutes, the train pulled into Klamath Falls, where it sat for about 25 minutes to let off and take on passengers and luggage, allowing passengers to step off the train to have a smoke, if so desired (no smoking allowed anywhere on the train….). As I stepped off to do just that, I noted the attendant performing the same act of vice-maintenance; I said nothing, just finished my smoke and went back to my room, so I wouldn’t miss the food’s arrival…. I needn’t have hurried, as she didn’t come in behind me, as far as I could tell…. I checked, because, as I said, I was starving…..
The train resumed the journey, but, still no breakfast…. After another 45 minutes, and over two hours after I asked to have the food, telling the server I was starving (my exact words….), it still hadn’t arrived…. I got up, pretty steamed, and started toward the dining car, intending to find some food… As I rounded the turn in the car behind me, I saw the young woman approaching with a large paper bag in her hand…. I said, “Aha!”, spun on my heel, and started back to my room, not even looking at her after turning…
As I walked through the door between cars, I growled low in my throat, and hit my walking stick hard on the metal floor to catch my balance, (the floor moves….). and express a bit of frustration… At my room, I stowed the stick, sat, and waited for the food… She arrived and literally dumped the bag on the table, without a word, set down the coffee I’d asked for (two hours before), then, continued down the hall, and down the stairs to the conductor’s office below, where she apparently complained about my hitting the stick on the floor….
As I was trying to get my food out of the bag and fit on the tiny little table, the conductor appeared, and said I had been “threatening” to the attendant…. Well, at this point, I had had enough, so I proceeded to let my PTSD have its way, and treated the conductor to a full blown, tears flowing, crying rant, detailing my miserable night, the worse morning, and my intent to sue the rail system for everything they had….
I told him I had paid less money to stay at a Five Star Hotel, (the truth), that I was disabled, and had to carry my own luggage on board, spent a miserable night without a bed, that I had received NONE of the services for which I had paid over three hundred dollars, and I was now going to try to eat my COLD sausage and eggs with my COLD coffee, and he should just leave me alone before I totally lost control…. Having ranted in full out crying mode for about five full minutes at that point, I sat back, looked out the window, and ignored him until he went away…..
Well, I think I got the message across, to him, at least, as  a bit later, he came back, apologized for my troubles, and tried to make nice for the company…. He couldn’t do anything about the ticket price, of course, (note the eyebrows wiggling up and down…..) but he suggested I complain and request a refund, because the management needed to hear about this kind of thing…. He stated he would be talking with the supervisor of the attendant for her lack of sensitivity and laziness, and offered to help me get my bag downstairs when we arrived in an hour or so…. His attitude, correct as it was, only served to point up the contrast with the service I should have received, and didn’t, in any respect…..
Fortunately for all, my friend was there to meet me, and whisk me away before I could devise a way to torment the office staff at the Eugene station, or blow somebody up like I’d been blown for the last 14 hours…. Instead, we went and had lunch, and I was able to decompress enough to enjoy the rest of my visit with my buddy and his partner, Cyn….  The wine helped, for sure…..
This rant has helped a bit, as well…. though, I have to say, in looking back over it, I was nicer than I should have been, and much nicer to them than they were to me…. This is also going to help, because I intend to include a link to this Pearl in the letter I send to them, eventually, with the expressed hope that the tale goes viral on the Net, and my intent to publish it as widely as I can, to start a whispering, word-of-mouth campaign as a message to them to either clean up their act, or get out of business…. I’m not going to settle for anything less…. They’ve already lost my business for the rest of my life, and I had intended to travel by train a lot…. Now, that is NOT going to happen, not without some kind of assurance that stuff like this doesn’t happen again, to anyone…..
Composing the above mild rant tired me out, not unsurprisingly…. Before I started writing so much on a daily basis, I hadn’t realized that PTSD, as one  of its characteristics that comes down on the negative side, can make it tiring to think about old stuff that was of a traumatic nature, due to the tendency for the emotional content to recreate itself, strongly, generally causing an overflow of tears and embarrassment (I know, it’s okay to cry, but doing it in public places is somewhat of a facer, what?….. Not exactly the image I’m trying to create on the streets…..). Any who, I’m fagged, though having only been up about two hours….
A fresh poem isn’t ready, so I’m going back to the archives, but will add a fresh haiku, written this morning, before pasting in the older poem…..  As every day this month, this is for the April National Poetry Writing Month Challenge, with the updates to be found here:  http://www.napowrimo.net/ (I still don’t know if I’m doing this right, but, oh well….)
Haiku:
Bright sun rises up,
glory against a blue sky.
Joy is now, today.
A Failure to Germinate
Marking the days in elements of sad disarray
only holds me thrall, as I laugh while I may.
With cold, hard hands so impatient and cruel
pulling me to this vale of tears, a pathetic old fool.
Feelings sit silent, cast in shadows and light
breaking forth to implicate such vengeful might.
Just below the surface they patiently hide
to sally forth bravely, colors bright as they ride.
Tears and pain transform valued assets in hand
while comfort and serenity retreat to a far land.
Bold, bright patterns of hope garnish my ruinous state
until reality enters, full of disdainful portions of hate.
I sort out the illustrious measures of vision gone mild
only to find them transformed, now vicious and wild.
In my deepest desires I find myself calloused and cold
with faithless advocates whose souls have been sold.
My search finds little to support any hope of relief
far too much time has passed to bolster such belief.
The sad becomes real, and real becomes unfounded
until flights of such fancy are all dead, and grounded.
Nature has informed me of the newly hatched crime
that reality has boasted of proudly, time after time.
The last answer we think of is always the best
as we come to terms with fate, our hope at rest.
In re: freshness, since the poem section is only half and half, I’ll put together an old-school pearl for this last section today…. It’s a bit shorter, and takes less time than another rant…. Here is one with a very obscure, but valid, point…. which, of course, is left as an exercise for the Gentle Reader….. (that’s you…..) ….. Enjoy!
To some dear falsehood, hugs it to the last.
Okay, why don’t y’all sit back and cogitate a moment while I go back and punch this up….. Not too shabby, I think…. I may hit out at Amtrak again some day soon; I don’t think I quite got all of my anger at them resolved. No worries, everything comes in the fullness of time, so I’ve heard….  😉
