Hajime…. Good morrow, Gentle Reader(s)…. ‘Twas a minor struggle, but, I have managed to put together a Pearl; while I can’t say it’s the best ever, it is up to snuff; ’nuff said on that. The rant upon which I am working continues to grow beyond all reason, & may require both editing and trimming before it’s ready for consumption. However, we’ve got some rather fine music today, to go along with a nicely obscure little old-school pearl, and a poem, which, though mine, isn’t too shabby. If nothing else, all the elements for an excellent Pearl are in place; whether such status has been reached is a judgment I’m not prepared to make, so, you will have to decide for yourselves….

With that being said, to cover my ass, if not my conscience, I think I’ll just get on with it. Such ruthlessness always seems to work out, though not necessarily with any better results, which remain just about as random as they can be. Go figure, eh? The truth hurts, much of the time; we all have to get used to that. Since this blog is, as far as I can make it, dependent upon truth, we’ll pretend we’ve learned our lesson well, and go with the flow, as indicated. That flow is a fast-running stream today, so, we’ll maximize our utilization practices, & get on with it; fighting the current never works well, anyway. I think we’ll use this old method, which just happens to be laying right over here. Watch this….

Shall we Pearl?

A dream, weeping….

“Never a dull moment to spare”, he said
with a crooked grin, and a broad wink.
“Can’t keep Reality hanging by a thread….
what would Chaos, or Entropy think?”

So, we plucked up our dreams of old,
to carry us on, in dutiful, strong arms,
stuffed a candle in the remaining fold,
for luck, and perfect proof against charms.

Storms follow the sun, but, never stay;
lessons round every corner, all free.
Past fleeting doubts, in a sad disarray,
the journey becomes the reason to be.

Simple kindness manifests untold riches,
in defiance of common cause’s demise.
Bold courage, hanging in stitches,
mends wounds that come as no surprise.

Still, waters run deep, ’tis said by many.
Too much pain cannot apprehend
the salient, sharp points of epiphany,
nor, plainly, to wisdom aspire to pretend.

Folly dogs even the simplest truth,
fumes of toxic ignorance and bile,
alienated as a loose rotten tooth;
it often hides itself, for a long while.

Sought after eons ago, we cried out,
to believe, to suffer no more doubt.
But found instead good reason,
for love, and truth, from season, to season.

Hajime…. Well. Here we are again, this time with a degree of reluctance rather difficult to overcome. Another very long night, with the bonus of tweaking my back good and proper right before arising. Joy, oh, joy…. Since I am determined, in spite of all that, to post today, I’ll struggle through the process, & see what can be done. And, I won’t even ask for any slack.

I will, however, take some, or make some, one way or another, for, today, I’m going to need some to get through this without any unwarranted angst build-up, nor any dead bodies, if at all possible. Leelu hates the smell. At any rate, this little short diatribe-like outburst, which is here merely to fill in a bit of space on the page, is all the intro you get today. In fact, you have already reached the end of what I’ve got, so, we’ll just be on our way, just as if we planned it this way…. Slick, eh?…. Here is a collection of all the various Betty Boop cartoons that got banned at one time or another, for various offenses against the public’s sensibilities, as legal at the time. None, of course, are anything perverted, other than with the usual human insanity, which, in Betty’s case, was mitigated by the size of her heart….     There are days when I must trust the process. Today is such a day, for sure and for certain. I’m trying NOT to go into the archives for anything other than the poem, so, here is an old-school pearl, taking some shots at modern society, and a few of the things that I see we need to change, if we have any hope of making it to the twenty-second century….

“The world has taken on a thickness of vulgarity that raises a spiritual man’s contempt to the violence of a passion.” — Charles Baudelaire

“It’s silly to go on pretending that under the skin we are all brothers. The  truth is more likely that under the skin we are all cannibals, assassins, traitors, liars, hypocrites, poltroons.” — Henry Miller

“The industrial way of life leads to the industrial way of death. From Shiloh to Dachau, from Antietam to Stalingrad, from Hiroshima to Vietnam and Afghanistan, the great specialty of industry and technology has been the mass production of human corpses.” — Edward Abbey

“Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” — Genesis 1:28

(As an aside, I would like to note, the statement from Genesis, in my mind, is the root cause of ALL our troubles here on Earth….This is not only a contemptible lie, it is sheer effrontery on the part of the one who thought this shit up…. Sheer wishful thinking, and, quite obviously insane….)

“If you close your eyes, You won’t see them dying” — Eric Bogle

“The danger is not that a particular class is unfit to govern. Every class is unfit to govern.” — Lord Acton

“The individual must not merely wait and criticize, he must defend the cause the best he can.  The fate of the world will be such as the world deserves.” — Albert Einstein

    Our final pearl is an old-school, random harlequin variety pearl. It’s a bit more obscure than most, but, winds its way to where it should be, eventually. Try not to take it personally, okay? I’m tired, and it’s all I’ve got…. Just think of the children before you decide to vent….

“How is one to live a moral and compassionate existence when one is fully aware of the blood, the horror inherent in life, when one finds darkness not only in one’s culture but within oneself?  If there is a stage at which an individual life becomes truly adult, it must be when one grasps the irony in its unfolding and accepts responsibility for a life lived in the midst of such paradox. One must live in the middle of contradiction, because if all contradiction were eliminated at once life would collapse. There are simply no answers to some of the great pressing questions. You continue to live them out, making your life a worthy expression of leaning into the light.” — Barry Lopez, Arctic Dreams

Hajime…. Yesterday’s foul mood, while passed into memory, mostly, remains hovering around the edges of my persona; I suppose, given today’s world, a certain amount of angst will be humanity’s lot from now until the world has settled into whatever the future brings….. In other words, “What the fuck?” is the new paradigm for human reality, so, we’d best get used to a higher degree of chaos in our daily lives…. So be it; we have no one but ourselves to blame for any of it….

I’m tired, having spent a restless night, post foulness of mood. Also c’est la fucking vie, so, no sense worrying over it now. It isn’t as if I hadn’t been there before, right? Right. Since we’re being so damn logical and grounded this morning, perhaps it would be best to get the slow on the toad, right away, before we lose any of the competence we may possess by virtue of the new day. Yeah, that’s the ticket…. Hang on, we’ll teleport over to the oyster beds, so we can get started without any further delays, or, opportunities to fuck it up….  Sure, like that will work…. Oh well, let’s go, anyway….

Shall we Pearl?….

I just sat there smiling, with my jaw dropping on a regular basis, as Eric, or Mark, went off on the guitar solo riffs in both White Room, and another couple of the old tunes…. Amazing…. The Anti-trafficking Movement Needs Survivor Voices: Why Are We Ignored?

“Human beings were invented by water as a device for transporting itself from one place to another.” — Tom Robbins

As an opening for a rant on politics, I can’t think of a better writer than Tom Robbins, to illustrate for us the primary cause for all the problems we humans seem to make for ourselves in that silly, yet, deadly arena of human existence. With one masterful line, he shows exactly how we fail to understand the true nature of not only Reality, but, ourselves, as well. Of course, one must possess the wherewithal to understand the incredibly subtle metaphor he employs, but, hey, if there is anything we know around here, it is the power of the Metaphorse….

With that said, I’m feeling generous today, as well as smarmy, so, I’ll forgo ranting in favor of poking at the BRC, and all the other Asininnies we can include, with the sharpest sticks we can find in the oyster beds today…. Since we have, naturally, using the power of a Time Lord, as bestowed by virtue of a Tardis on loan from the Doctor, already collected all the pearls we shall need, why don’t we get right to it? Okay, that was easy…. Oh, and, fair warning, ffolkes; there are 13 of these puppies. Take it slow….

For The Blind Poet, Embraced

I sit to open a vein, exposed in public places,
happy to be written, judging by the faces.

None can see the price so willingly paid,
at the feet of imagination is that cost weighed.

Still shadows of reality shine quite as well
to hide all the bleeding as if under a spell;

While visions and fantasies vie for attention,
hoping to win once-hoped-for final mention.

Technology may or may not rue its day
never knowing or caring its part to play.

All the precious moments of inspiration
Fall ever short of our own imagination.

Caterpillar

Ink is raining again.

Stan, on the radio, rapping tattoos
onto white-trash girls,
sitting, spinning on bar stools.

The highway is moving ninety miles
back, to late August madness,
cars are splashing

into phone booths
left over from big cities
and light houses.

But ships don’t come in
like they used to.
The calm of the sea
isn’t the color of God’s
angry finger anymore.

Caterpillar!!
Across the back of my shoulder!
“To rob.” “To pillage.”
“To suck the ink out of every living thing.”

My name is not what matters.
The alphabet is random.
My fingers have no pattern.
I’m bound to and wrapped around each syllable
like a piece of cabbage.
An appetizer. A long, soft caterpillar
eating my way into you.

As consciousness reluctantly returns, reality assumes its normal 3 AM look, a rather fuzzy, amorphous vision, darkly blunted. Stumbling up, heavy-lidded & dizzy,  bumping into walls & doorways, the smell of coffee draws me inexorably into the kitchen, to meld sugar, milk, and brewed, crushed beans into morning’s ambrosia. The first sip, as always, brings the world into focus, sharpening the edges of my perception, until, finally, I can lift my eyes up, to look out the window at the darkness of the pre-dawn darkness, where amorphous shadows twist and dance, a silent, windy ballet.

Not too bad for a zombie, eh? Can’t seem to get my brain going today, no matter how hard I flog it…. Something MUST be done!…. I know, I’ll stop writing, and go get more coffee, the first cup having mysteriously disappeared. I could have sworn it was a lot bigger, but, I guess I just sucked it up as if somebody would snatch it away from me. Be back in a couple of nanoseconds…. Is there another kind, when on a computer?….

Okay, so, that didn’t work. Since over 5 million nanoseconds have passed since last typing, I can’t say I saved myself much time by taking a short break. Ah well, it’s just as well. Somebody was going to have to make an executive decision soon, anyway, or the rental on the overheads would have run out before we had a chance to pay the bill. Of course. all that’s on autopay, but, ya never know. I like to keep track…. No, I have no idea where ANY of that came from….

Ah, the hell with it, I can’t think of any more tricks, or delays that would help; it’s all going to turn to crap, more so than it already has, if I try. That does it…. Okay, ffolkes, we’re now going directly to the oyster beds, with no more detours. I’m using our most efficient, ruthless method, so, please make sure the splash-guards are in place. Hang on to your neighbor’s hand, and, if you have a god, you should probably pray to it…. Okay, Vinnie, take her down!….

Old Memories Of Paris, Café Au Latte

Old memories of Paris, café au latte,
iron wrought on a kitchen sink
where she slimmed her figure
on a butcher block.

She dangled like a wind chime,
toes on pointe,
testing the winds and
the Gods on
Wisdom of Love.

Pretty little music box, my doll,
bathing in sunlight
through reflections of The Tower at
dawn. I asked her what she saw.

Her answer was as black as a widow
living off space between sun flower seeds.
I turned to her soul and spoke
to her in cotton,
she understood,
souls always understand what is next,
and why.

I led her to confession.
She rattled all the way,
dangling eight unworthy legs –
shooting silk like
it meant nothing,
because that is all she had ever known.

By sunset, she had dried up.
Everything that she had devoured
had taken over
and spit her spirit out.

Morning muse

    Okay, so…. this pearl is, well, I don’t know what this pearl is. It’s here. It’s done. That’s all I know…. We all will have to deal with that, now, won’t we? We’d best get to it….

“Reality is what bumps into you when you stand still with your eyes open.” — Solomon Short

“Even death is not to be feared by one who has lived wisely.” — Buddha

“Stop thinking, and end your problems.” — Lao Tzu

“Virtue is the golden mean between two vices, the one of excess and the other of deficiency.” — Aristotle (B.C. 384-322)

“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.” — Oscar Wilde

“He who has so little knowledge of human nature as to seek happiness by changing anything but his own disposition will waste his life in fruitless efforts.” — Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)

Happily may I walk.
May it be beautiful before me.
May it be beautiful behind me.
May it be beautiful below me.
May it be beautiful above me.
May it be beautiful all around me.
In beauty it is finished.

Works for me…. You may go on now….

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What happened? Did we finish? Oh, okay, I see by the condition of the pilot (passed out in the cabin…), we have. I think it’s best if I stop now. See y’all tomorrow, ffolkes…. Well, with the usual caveat, of course…. – if they don’t get me for this one….
Y’all take care out there,
and May the Metaphorse be with you;
Blessed Be, dearest Carole, Mark,Theresa, & Richy
and everyone else, too…
When I works, I works hard.
When I sits, I sits loose.
When I thinks, I falls asleep.
mantra against fear
The Litany Against Fear
~~ Bene Gesserit Mantra ~~
From “Dune” by Frank Herbert
The world we live in, because of a serious flaw in our nature, is a dangerous place…. As Albert Einstein once observed, “The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.” The nature of our inherent flaw has been the subject of inquiry since the beginning of recorded history, and before; it has been examined, analyzed, dissected, and discussed innumerable times, and ways, with no real solution to the problem ever becoming apparent…. To this day, this…. weakness, prevalent in a large percentage of the species, continues to cause difficulties for the entire planet, not only for ourselves….
However, we, or I, won’t rant about it, not yet…. But, I’d like to point out the basic nature of the flaw that is so common it has proved to be nearly impossible to delete from our internal file systems, (Perhaps it may be said to be not so ‘nearly’…. nothing we’ve tried has ever helped much, so, it may just BE completely impossible to eradicate the root cause from our lives…. simply because it is a root part of our nature….). I like to describe the flaw by calling it by it’s most common name, to wit: deliberate ignorance…. This is not to say that those who possess the flaw are stupid, necessarily…. Stupid can’t help being stupid; ignorance is a choice, one made by those who wish never to feel, or, in their own eyes, have any responsibility for their actions, and, especially regarding how those actions affect those around them….
This, of course, a long winded way to say they are plain and simple, selfish, narcisstic assholes, who consistently choose to use their abilities and talents solely for their own benefit…. They have no compassion, for they don’t acknowledge the innate worth of anyone but themselves…. This attitude arises out of our most basic emotional reaction to what the world does around us, i.e., fear…. The asinine buttheads who prey on other people for their own benefit are, quite simply, cowards…. All of what they see and perceive about the world frightens them to death, because they do not have the courage to ever admit their own ignorance…. Without admitting one does not know, one can never learn anything at all, including anything that would reduce their overriding fears….
The Litany Against Fear, from the book, Dune, is one man’s attempt to offer a partial solution, to the extent that if one has the wit to study themselves, and use the ideas of others to help them understand both themselves and the world around them, affirmations such as the Litany help to train the mind, into one with true knowledge of the universe, and their place in it…. This knowledge, and the qualities one must develop to obtain it, have the net result of removing the power of the fear which is our most common reaction to things we don’t understand… When one has come to understand their own fears, those fears have no more power to control or influence one’s actions….
What I can tell you for sure is that it works…. I first read the book when I was about fourteen, and I found that, prior to that time when I studied the arts of war more thoroughly, and trained myself to be as dangerous as the world I inhabit, it helped to control the power of fear in me, to where I controlled IT, rather than the other way around. The knowledge I sought and found later served to supply me with even greater resistance to those fears, until it no longer was of any great concern…. Having had the advantage of knowing, and using, the Litany was of immense help….
There, now, that wasn’t so bad, was it? We managed to complete enough chatty conversational discussion to qualify as a proper intro section, so, if nothing else is true, that worked just fine…. I can’t say I’m any more impressed than usual, but, it works well enough to get on with the rest of today’s messiness…. which is, no doubt, a good thing, as my hands are all weirded out this morning, giving me fits if I type too long…. Before it gets so bad I can’t hit the right keys at all, I’d best use that hole right there, and get us out of here…. Hang on, ffolkes…
Shall we Pearl?
In today’s digital world, becoming famous to much of the world isn’t necessarily difficult; what is difficult is maintaining the same degree of fame over time…. The world mostly has a very short attention span…. This comedian/social critic/self-styled revolutionary, Russell Brand, has managed, by publishing his thoughts and public interviews on You Tube, to keep society’s attention, if not completely focused on him at all times, still in their awareness to compel their attention, after a couple of years….
His ideas and words become news in no time, as the media finds him to be a ratings booster, due to his unique style, and the attractiveness of his ideas to a large portion of humanity….. If nothing else, he’s a kick to listen to, especially if one examines his ideas more deeply, to find they are, generally, right on the mark…. Enjoy, ffolkes, there is a lot of stuff at the link you might find either amusing, or astounding, or offensive…. but, mostly, you won’t dismiss any of it as nonsense, because it’s pretty obvious the stuff he spouts off about is mostly all true….
is to live under the government of bad men.”
http://time.com/3558263/mitch-mcconnell-shutdown-obamacare-majority-leader/
In an interview that brings new meaning to the phrase, “mealy-mouthed”, Mitch McConnell lives up to his reputation as one of the most dishonest, amoral politicians alive today, a true disciple of the master of evil, one of his predecessors as the third or fourth most powerful flunkie on the continent, the demon Cheney, and the newest example of the obvious lack of connection to the REAL demographic diversity of the citizens of the United States. Even though he actually says nothing in the interview that could be in any way construed as a promise, or a commitment to any position at all, he still managed to demonstrate his complete ignorance of anything that is of real importance to any of those citizens, beyond the now small minority of rich, white Caucasians, and those who believe all their bigoted, racist nonsense.
“It is a sin to believe evil of others, but it is seldom a mistake.” — H. L. Mencken
Mr. Mencken has, sadly, hit upon what gives all the appearance of a universal truth, when applied to Mankind…. Well, perhaps only in specific cases, rather than universal, but the great majority do have problems resisting evil impulses, or display a distressing lack of will regarding evil influences…. In short, strangely enough, a lot of people, especially those who end up as politicians, or preachers, or police, or mercenaries, or snakeheads, or bankers (to wit: that part of Man that preys upon the rest, acting solely out of motivations based on personal gain….) are those who make the decision to embrace darkness, rather than resisting its seductive call….
But then, the darkness promises one need never feel personally responsible for any acts of evil, or have any compassion for others, especially for their victims, whom they typically view with great disdain….. all while consistently presenting a different face to those victims, a face they are seduced into believing is one to be trusted to think for them….
Yes, it sounds rather far-fetched to me, also, that ANYONE would fall for this load of crap, but, they do, time after time, generation after generation…. To view the patterns of human history is to wonder if the tendency to be forced into slavery is a congenital failing, peculiar to a portion of the human race, as opposed to others who are congenitally predisposed to prey on their own kind….
SIGH…. Bummer. I find myself, at this point, unable to carry on this rant, due to physical constraints…. (Hmm? Oh, no. nothing life-threatening… it’s just that my hands seem to be turning into bricks….). Rather than just abandoning our indictment of the asininnies we’ve hauled into the limelight, allowing them to scatter off into the cracks in the walls, like a herd of the vermin they resemble so closely, without at least hearing the indictment against them, we’ll try something else…
I know, I’ll ask SB to put together a short pearl to accomplish for us some of the poking of their dignity, and pulling of their covers we so enjoy…. Let’s see what it can find for us, shall we?….
“At a convention of biological scientists one researcher remarks to another, “Did you know that in our lab we have switched from mice to lawyers for our experiments?” “Really?”, the other replied, “Why did you switch?” “Well, for two reasons.  First we found that lawyers are far more plentiful, and second, the lab assistants don’t get so attached to them.” — Smart Bee
“Those who suppress freedom always do so in the name of law and order.” — John Lindsay
“Money is wrong. It’s the means whereby man enslaves his brother.” — Finny
“Government, today, is growing too strong to be safe. There are no longer any citizens in the world; there are only subjects.  They work day in and day out for their masters;  they are bound to die for their masters at call.  Out of this working and dying they tend to get less and less.” — H.L. Mencken
“When a man tells you that he got rich through hard work, ask him: ‘Whose?'” — Don Marquis
“He is useless on top of the ground; he aught to be under it, inspiring the cabbages.” — Mark Twain
“A guilty conscience never feels secure.” — Publius Syrus (42 BC) — Maxim 617
“A traveller at Sparta, standing long upon one leg, said to a Lacedaemonian, “I do not believe you can do as much.” “True,” said he, “but every goose can.”
— Plutarch (46-120 AD) — Remarkable Speeches
Basta! We all probably can find something more productive on which to spend our time…. Onward….
Here is a poem by one of my favorite modern poets; his work is gritty, real, and straight to the point…. It’s very powerful stuff, written from the vantage point of a man who spent most of his life on the streets…. which made him an excellent voice of the people…. Plus, what he writes seems to often complement the subjects on which I choose to rant, such as today….
Challenge To The Dark
shot in the eye
shot in the brain
shot in the ****
shot like a flower in the dance
amazing how death wins hands down
amazing how much credence is given to idiot forms of life
amazing how laughter has been drowned out
amazing how viciousness is such a constant
I must soon declare my own war on their war
I must hold to my last piece of ground
I must protect the small space I have made that has allowed me life
my life not their death
my death not their death…
Smart Bee seems to think I have nothing better to do this morning than sit here and patiently wait for it to get off its ass & give me what I need to finish…. This took forfuckingever…. Wow. I must have used that word before, because Spell Checker didn’t even blink at it…. Okay, so, that bodes well for the rest of this group…. May as well get started…. but, I’d suggest you hook the safety line to the hook by the doorway, so as not to fall out of the plane if we have to make any sudden flight adjustments due to confusion….
Actually, this begins strongly, and in some way, brings us where we would otherwise wish to be…. I guess….
May it be beautiful below me.
May it be beautiful above me.
Ffolkes,
Sadly, I haven’t finished moving, though it is progressing fairly well. To save time and energy, both of which are currently in short supply, today’s Pearl will consist entirely of quotes, sans my usual commentary…. regular readers may fill in what they believe I might have commented, or discussed, or ranted about…. newcomers will enjoy the poem, if naught else makes sense…. hope y’all are doing well out there… things should be back to normal in a day or two…. or as close to normal as I am capable of getting…. Shall we Pearl?…..
A ghost, though invisible, still is like a place
your sight can knock on, echoing; but here
within this thick black pelt, your strongest gaze
will be absorbed and utterly disappear:
just as a raving madman, when nothing else
can ease him, charges into his dark night
howling, pounds on the padded wall, and feels
the rage being taken in and pacified.
She seems to hide all looks that have ever fallen
into her, so that, like an audience,
she can look them over, menacing and sullen,
and curl to sleep with them. But all at once
as if awakened, she turns her face to yours;
and with a shock, you see yourself, tiny,
inside the golden amber of her eyeballs
suspended, like a prehistoric fly.
Malicious exploitation of rabbinical robes….
Ffolkes,
I may have discovered the answer to one of those questions that has perplexed mankind since our species first kicked the sticks out of the crib, to wit: Why do people get so cranky when they get old? I can now tell you…. it’s all the fault of Mister Time, or Mistress Time, if you prefer (there is a lot to be said for the idea of the Time Bitch, or She Who Turns Hair Gray, a name I’ve heard numerous women authors suggest for use…..).
Now, I know you’ll probably ask what is new about that, and I’ll tell you, if you’ll give me  a chance…. don’t rush me, I just got up….
See, and there is the other reason for our cranky pants…. while I was writing the previous paragraph, lovingly polishing the phraseology, the subtle, yet simple answer that had come to me… went. Gone with the wind. Kaput, got thrown out with the bath, done a bunk…. Oh, wait, there it is…. never mind…
So, anyway, the Time Bitch gets us all eventually, and we get cranky because, not only does it HURT, but, here we are, with all this knowledge and experience that we’ve spent a lifetime learning, and these sneak attacks on our breath, strength, hair, and skin have added up to turn us into physical shadows of our former selves. All the things we’ve learned to enjoy doing are now proscribed, due to our body’s inability to meet the physical requirements of the activity. Our favorite forms of recreation or work are kept from us as no longer feasible. This, as you might guess, gets to be old quickly….like us.
So, we have to learn a new skill, called rationalization, also known to small children as pretend, or the world of make-believe. (Well, maybe not new, just a new application for it…..) We learn to say things like, “Oh, that’s okay, I’d rather sit here and read my book, really. You go ahead and swim over to Hawaii without me….”, or, “You guys go ahead, I’m just going to sit here and watch all the people. I don’t really enjoy xxxxing.”  (xxxx, being, of course, one of our previously favorite things to do….)
We learn to pretend that we don’t really mind not being able to walk without a stick of some kind, or that places that used to be close are now far away (such as the floor….), or that we have to choose hamburger even if we can afford steak, because we can’t chew it….
So, don’t wonder any more about all those cranky old folks wandering around in the world. They’re just adjusting to the new requirements Life has placed on them, and it takes some practice…. In the meantime, I think I’ll try to get over my morning irritation with my body by diving into the WWW for some pearls… wan to come along? Let’s go Pearl…..
“Ever notice that fifteen minutes into a Jerry Lewis telethon you start rooting for the disease?” — Jim Sherbert
It’s a good thing for me I was raised without having to experience one of the more severe religions, because I’d probably have died from making myself feel guilty by now, for making fun of iconoclasts revered by the rest of society. Mother Teresa, Jerry Lewis, Oral Roberts, Billy Graham, Swaggert & Bakker et al, they have all felt the lash of my pen, pricking at them for their hypocrisy and self-aggrandizement. The pearl above describes my feelings exactly whenever I’ve spent more than five minutes watching one of Jerry’s telethons, which have been going on TV since I was seven years old (not quite an eon, but close enough….)….
The sheer effrontery of these people is what annoys me. All of them suffer from Grundyism, and to me, this is one of the worst human characteristics there is, common as it is. Grundyism, a term inspired by Robert Heinlein’s concept of the Mrs. Grundy’s of the world, is best illustrated by visualizing Mrs. Grundy, the prototypical nosy neighbor, peering with one eye around the corner of her parlor window, keeping a beady, judgmental eye on everything going on in her neighbors’ yards and houses, in order to provide her with ample supplies of gossip about which to spread innuendo and lies to her like-minded companions, Lady Nosy-Parker and the church secretary. Nothing that she does is ever a subject for her dissection in her daily phone and back-fence conversations, only the (in her eyes…) morally questionable activities that she observes in her neighbors.
Mr. Heinlein has suggested that the best way to deal with a sentence from one of these less-than-stellar characters such as “I know it’s none of my business, but…” , is to place a period after the word “but”, not bothering to be too careful as to worry about how forcefully that period is put in place. His attitude suggests that blood is acceptable, but mayhem is going a bit too far for mere gossip. Unless, of course, it is true, in which case, applying the period with a baseball bat, though messy, has been found to be gratifyingly cathartic, once the body is disposed of….. I suggest the use of lime and acid in combination; it is not fast, but extremely thorough….
Or, I guess, one could just say, “Go mind your own fucking business, you moron!” or some such polite suggestion, and leave it at that…..Offend them hard enough and they may watch you, but they will hesitate to talk about it…. I’ve found, personally, that an occasional wild-eyed stare at their house, mumbling and laughing maniacally, while fingering the sharp edge of an axe, to be fairly effective in keeping them quiet….. I love to see the curtains drop down over the window in a huffy rush…..
A man can’t get rich if he takes proper care of his family. — Navajo Proverb
I love this statement. I’ve never seen it before, and it struck me hard when I first saw it. It is the kind of statement that reverberates…. it just doesn’t go into the mind and sit there, smug in its truth. It gently leads the mind to thinking about it, to examine it, and subtly yet firmly plants a thought that grows and grows, until its wisdom is not just clear, but shining.
In thinking it over, I found it could conceivably be used as a basis for a rant against the 1%, and I still may do so. But not just now…. I find it to be a soothing thought as well, and the mental energy of producing a rant would be counter-productive, I think. So, take note of this pearl…. it is one of the shortest I’ve ever made, with that characteristic common to all the shortest of them, to wit: it truly needs no help to make its point….. This is true morality, ffolkes…..
Integrity needs no rules. — Smart Bee
First Love
I ne’er was struck before that hour
With love so sudden and so sweet,
Her face it bloomed like a sweet flower
And stole my heart away complete.
My face turned pale as deadly pale.
My legs refused to walk away,
And when she looked, what could I ail?
My life and all seemed turned to clay.
And then my blood rushed to my face
And took my eyesight quite away,
The trees and bushes round the place
Seemed midnight at noonday.
I could not see a single thing,
Words from my eyes did start —
They spoke as chords do from the string,
And blood burnt round my heart.
Are flowers the winter’s choice?
Is love’s bed always snow?
She seemed to hear my silent voice,
Not love’s appeals to know.
I never saw so sweet a face
As that I stood before.
My heart has left its dwelling-place
And can return no more
As an integral part of my eternal search for lustrous pearls, I save time by subscribing to email lists that will send me material. One of those is a poetry site, Poem Hunters.com; I started using their email service about two or three weeks ago, and have found their choice of poems to be very helpful, and erudite, as well as satisfyingly diverse. I’ve now been introduced to at least four new poets (new to me….) whose work I find to be very good. This is one of them…. enjoy!
