“I hope that after I die, people will say of me: “That guy sure owed me a lot of money.” ” — Deep Thoughts, by Jack Handey

I hope it’s just me who thinks this is one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard, in a weird, wacky way. I’m not even sure WHY I think it’s hilarious, but, I have to go with the evidence…. Whenever I start to actually think about what it says, about life, about Jack Handey (whoever he is…), and about irony, I bust up chuckling. It’s not a guffaw, nor a belly-buster; just persistent chuckling over how really, really stupid the person who said it HAS to be….

Okay, enough about me, and MY oddities…. I am  not sure I want to know about what it says about me that I think it’s funny, so, we’d best get on with today’s mess, before the men in white suits arrive to take me away….

Well, here I am in AMERICA..

I LIKE it.  I HATE it.  I LIKE it.
I HATE it.  I LIKE it.  I HATE it.
I LIKE it. I HATE it.
I LIKE…

EMOTIONS are SWEEPING over me!!

 — Zippy the Pinhead

I know how Zippy feels; the direction this country took some time back has left all of us, I think, with a bit of a head-spinning problem, trying to keep up with all the insanity we see. I’ve figured out why I haven’t been up to ranting of late; there’s too many subjects to pick from, and all are equally important to us all…. The insanity of the Middle East, the Ukraine, and all the other places in the world where the arms dealers are continuing their insane need to keep the money flowing, by whipping the flames of discontent all over the world. The ongoing abuse of women and children, in the areas  of sex trafficking and child sexual abuse, which are rampant everywhere, even in the most seemingly civilized countries. The wealth inequality gap continues to widen, while the 1% (much too large a number, btw…. there are actually only about a thousand or so of the true elite, who actually control everything…. Names like Rothschild, Krup, DuPont, Remington, Rockefeller, etc…)

I could keep listing the troubles faced by our world, but, what is the point? Nobody is listening, unless they already feel much the same, and the people who NEED to hear what I have to say, not only don’t give a shit, they would actively try to shut me up, if anyone actually began to pay attention. That, of course, doesn’t worry me; in fact, I wish they would try, for then I’d know I was on the right track, and I have no doubts about my ability to handle whatever they come at me with. (I’m a bit more prepared than it might seem on the surface….) The only thing they might be able to do is kill me, and that is fine with me…. I am prepared for my death; I wonder if they can say the same….

So, for now. I’m going to NOT rant, but, try to keep after them with old-school pearls, until I can figure out a way to have what I say find its way to a larger audience…. For today, here is a nine-star pearl, speaking about life in this country, and in the world at large, as it exists today….

“What sane person could live in this world and not be crazy?” — Ursula K. LeGuin

“I live in the Managerial Age, in a world of “Admin.”  The greatest evil is not now done in those sordid “dens of crime” that Dickens loved to paint. It is not done even in concentration camps and labour camps.  In those we see its final result.  But is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice.”– Preface to ‘The Screwtape Letters’ by C.S. Lewis

“There is an incessant influx of novelty into the world, and yet we tolerate incredible dullness.” — Henry David Thoreau, Walden

“An injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere.” — Samuel Johnson

“If we are not stupid or insincere when we say that the good or ill of man lies within his own will, and that all beside is nothing to us, why are we still troubled?” — Epictetus (c. 60 AD) — Discourses, Book i, Chap. xxv

“Who is more foolish: the child afraid of the dark or the man afraid of the light?” — Maurice Treehill

REPUBLIC, n.  A nation in which, the thing governing and the thing governed being the same, there is only a permitted authority to enforce an optional obedience.  In a republic, the foundation of public order is the ever lessening habit of submission inherited from ancestors who, being truly governed, submitted because they had to. There are as many kinds of republics as there are graduations between the despotism whence they came and the anarchy whither they lead. — Ambrose Bierce, “The Devil’s Dictionary”

“”Cowardice” and “self-respect” have largely disappeared from public discourse. In their place we are offered “self-esteem” as the bellwether of success and a proxy for dignity. “Self-respect” implies that one recognizes standards, and judges oneself worthy by the degree to which one lives up to them. “Self-esteem” simply means that one feels good about oneself. “Dignity” used to refer to the self-mastery and fortitude with which a person conducted himself in the face of life’s vicissitudes and the boorish behavior of others. Now, judging by campus speech codes, dignity requires that we never encounter a discouraging word and that others be coerced into acting respectfully, evidently on the assumption that we are powerless to prevent our degradation if exposed to the demeaning behavior of others. These are signposts proclaiming the insubstantiality of our character, proclaiming the hollowness of our souls.” — Jeffrey R. Snyder, Fall 1993 _The Public Interest

Because he was human, because he had goodness,
Because he was moral they called him insane.
Delusions of grandeur, visions of splendor,
A manic depressive who walks in the rain.

Cinderella Man, doing what you can,
They can’t understand what it means.
Cinderella Man, hang on to your plans.
Try as they might they cannot steal your dreams.

Y’all get stuck with mine again, simply because I’m lazy, and the new poem isn’t ready…. Enjoy, please, it’s the best I’ve got today….

Pure Truth: Elsewhen

Everything I say and do, I’m sure,
only comes from what I know.
If what I’ve said or done is good, and pure,
I can say it’s not just for show.

Sometimes people don’t quite get me.
It can be a pain, for sure.
I try not allow it to keep me from being free,
especially when my thoughts may be impure.

In fact, I try quite hard most of the time,
to keep from hurting folks.
If any culture more often approached sublime,
I wouldn’t have to take so many pokes.

Now I’ll make another sacrifice, for y’all,
not for karmic advantage, not merely so….
But, to save me from yet another downfall,
I’ll stop here; ensign, make it so….

Today’s final pearl was left up to SB, who has, apparently, gotten the raise for which it went on strike. It seems to be a rather international collection of wisdom from the Sages of the Ages…. Greeks, Romans, Europeans, Asians, they’re all represented here today…. Enjoy, ffolkes, it’s all pretty good advice….

“Wisdom begins in wonder.” — Socrates

“Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” — Confucius

“I do not distinguish by the eye, but by the mind, which is the proper judge of the man.” — Seneca (8 BC) — On a Happy Life, 2, (L’Estrange’s Abstract, Chap, i.)

“The average man, who does not know what to do with his life, wants another one which will last forever.” — Anatole France

“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.  Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.  Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.  Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.  But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.” — The Buddha

“Safety is on the shore, but the pearl is in the ocean.” — Chinese Proverb

“I grow old ever learning many things.” — Solon (630 – 555 BC)

Road Trip

Image stolen from unknown Internet site.

Unburdened by the rigors of coherent thought, I sit to begin another Pearl. I sincerely wish, too, I could claim credit for the opening sentence; sadly, I stole part of it. Beautiful, though, isn’t it? The part before the comma is the part I stole, which is why I wish I’d said it; it is, in almost every sense, a perfect expression of my state of being almost every day as I start this process. Process it is, too, beginning with will power sufficient to arise from bed, (always a challenging exercise, these days….), stumble to the coffee machine to turn it on, then, walk to the computer to attempt to find the tiny button to turn it on….

About ten minutes later, having somehow waited to get the coffee into my system, (often performing completely unconscious physical actions to do so…. I seldom remember FIXING the coffee, only consuming it…), I look at the screen to see if, maybe, I wrote something worth keeping while in my semi-conscious state. At least THAT is consistent…. it’s never there…

Today, the process is complicated even further by the vertigo I’ve been gifted with of late. In case you’ve never experienced it, let me assure you, it’s no picnic. Any sort of motion seems to stimulate it, which makes the process of writing somewhat problematic, as the head makes natural movements while thinking about them…. To be honest, it’s getting to be a bit of a bother…. and, yes, that’s sarcasm….

But. I got some of this done yesterday, so, I’ll push through, pretending I’m tough. I really did used to be tough; I just need to remember how to go about it…. Shouldn’t be too hard; I’ve played with pain, or other issues, all my life…. I’m not going to let it keep me from doing what I need to do now…..

Fuck Murphy….. and the fucking white horse he thinks he rode in on….

Shall we Pearl?

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total oblivion. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me and turn my inner eye to follow its path. When the fear is gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” — The Litany Against Fear (Frank Herbert, -Dune-, 1965)

Good timing on that one…. it’ll come in handy today….

I am NOT an opera fan, at all. However…. I AM a big fan of the human voice; I learned to play guitar so I could sing along. This isn’t to say I’ve the world’s best baritone; in fact I’d say any one of these three gentlemen are much better, without any fear of disagreement, from anyone but my dog, which I don’t have. And, they’re tenors, not baritones, which goes to show you how good I might be…. When all three of them are hitting a top note, it is, literally, spine-tingling…. Enjoy, ffolkes….

As might be surmised, a fresh rant is out of the question, unless I want to start in on Kaiser, HMO’s, and Big Pharm; I think I’ve built up enough angst over them to rant for a week with stopping…. For now, this little exercise will do….

From 9/2/2013:

“The great French Marshall Lyautey once asked his gardener to plant a tree. The gardener objected that the tree was slow growing and would not reach maturity for 100 years. The Marshall replied, In that case, there is no time to lose; plant it this very afternoon.” — John F. Kennedy

What a great little anecdote! I love to see a great life lesson told in a few short words…. Here is a perfect description of the attitude one requires to achieve happiness…. Yes, happiness, an old word, one bandied about much by the uninformed, and the unhappy…. Happy people never need to use the word itself, as they are just…. there. There is little need to think about being happy, when you are, and in fact, not thinking about it is one of the keys to holding it, once found…. But, it is a rare person in today’s world who can maintain any long periods where they feel happy the entire time; the world intrudes too much into our lives to give us leave to be happy, unless we know the secret…..

Yes, there’s a secret….. Of course, it’s the kind of secret that is hidden right in plain sight, like Poe’s Purloined Letter. It only requires that one be willing to accept it, and to allow it to enter into one’s spirit, suffusing the world in the less harsh light of contentment, rather than the cold, hard light of resentment. People tend to be like the gardener, blocking their own happiness by finding all kinds of reasons to NOT allow it entry into their world. As humans, we are taught at young age to view reality with stoicism, and mute, unquestioning acceptance of our lot; we are shown all the ways to look ahead, to see the worst of what can happen, in order to be prepared….

But, there is another way to approach the matter, one little known, and therefore little taught…Reality is a tough go, for sure, but, with a little bit of mental effort, much easier than the alternative, one can be in control of how it (Reality) affects one’s life. In short, Life treats us all like shit; what determines how much of it gets in our sandwich depends solely on us, and how we react to that shit…. We can slap the shit between two slices of bread, and choke it down…. or, we can use it as fertilizer, to grow some rather nice weed…. potent, and good for you….

Whatever one decides, the choice remains, as long as one is aware of the options. The problem with most folks is, they don’t see the options, or they don’t believe they will work, as their attitudes keep them from even trying a lot of new ways to do things. I won’t say it is this way for all people, but the greatest majority of people I see in the world are unhappy, without ever realizing that a) they don’t have to be unhappy, and b) being happy is within their power to choose…. It’s too bad, really, because that unhappiness is part of what makes people go wonky, losing integrity, honor, and any sense of morality, in order to reach for an illusion, an illusion of happiness that, even if grasped, will drift away and vanish, like smoke in a breeze….

This little mini-diatribe was intended to be more…. more clear, more inspiring, more helpful in getting people to think in different ways…. However, I seem to have lost that thread, and it’s getting a bit obscure, and thick…. So, I’m going to switch to old-school, and politely ask Smart Bee to give me the right words to accomplish that intent, without having to subject y’all to another thousand words of pedantic persuasion…. Well, that’s how it’s supposed  to work, anyway…. If not, at least it will have been more palatable, with more chocolate chips….

“Going to bed with a woman never hurt a ballplayer. It’s staying up all night looking for them that does you in.” — Casey Stengel

“Pizza is a lot like sex.  When it’s good, it’s really good.  When it’s bad, it’s still pretty good.” — Smart Bee

“Beware of the “Black Swan” fallacy.  Deductive logic is tautological; there is no way to get a new truth out of it, and it manipulates false statements as
readily as true ones.  If you fail to remember this, it can trip you – with perfect logic.  The designers of the earliest computers called this the “Gigo Law”, i.e. “garbage in, garbage out”.  Inductive logic is MUCH more difficult – but can produce new truths.” — Lazarus Long

“Man errs as long as he strives.” — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Faust

“‘T is but a part we see, and not a whole.” — Alexander Pope (1688-1744) — Essay on Man, Epistle i, Line 60

“If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything.” — Mark Twain

“Eternity is a mere moment, just long enough for a joke.” — Hermann Hesse

Okay, so, that works, sort of….. My apologies…. It’s not as clear as I’d hoped, though it’s quite good, in its own small way…. Not bad directions, if one is accustomed to pearls…. I’ve got it! Here is an example of how happiness works, and is available for use by anyone who wishes to use it….

I’m happy now…. I’m done….

(That’s it…. that’s the secret….. No? Not clear yet? Ah, well…. Well, we’ll try again later, ffolkes…. just remember, you CAN be happy, any time you wish…. It’s all a matter of choice….  Bonus? Nobody can take the choice away from you….)

Retrospective, defined in folly….

Yesterday
I wrote a poem.

It bled out of my head,
like I’d been struck with
an axe,
right through the artery,
in the neck,
spraying blood around
everywhere,
like a pulsing garden hose….

It hurt, at first,
then came the feeling,

of quick relief,
of timeless beauty,

of pain avenged,
of lust aroused,

of outrage aflame,
of deep compassion,

of endless empathy,
of truest love….

Now it’s gone, cast away
like pearls before twine.

(Grin…)

You thought
I was going to call you
a pig,
didn’t you?

Hah!

Well, you’re not.
You’re a person.

I know, because
you’re reading this poem…
if that’s what it is.
I think it is,
so,
maybe it is.

Or, maybe,
it will be,
someday, when it
grows up,
and learns to rhyme.
Whew…
Just in time…..

That’s all.
Reality often sucks wind,
y’know?

S’okay, though….
It keeps us busy,
and out of some of the
mischief,
so much part
of our
nature.

We all can do
only what we
do.

Or, don’t.

Two sides, one coin.

Today’s old-school pearl is pretty simple; it’s made up of good advice on how to live your life in a manner of your own choosing…. In short, it’s mostly stuff you already know, for peace is ALWAYS there inside all of us, just waiting for us to realize we are connected to the Universe at all times, if only we can remember….

“Nobody has so many friends that he can afford to lose one.” — Edward Abbey

“It is the edge and temper of the blade that make a good sword, not the richness of the scabbard; and so it is not money or possessions that make man considerable, but his virtue.” — Seneca

“. . is to attempt seeing Truth without knowing Falsehood. It is the attempt to see the Light without knowing Darkness. It cannot be.” — Frank Herbert, Dune

“Think all you speak, but speak not all you think.” — Smart Bee

“You can’t get wet from the word ‘water’.”  — Alan Watts

“It is impossible for a man to be cheated by anyone but himself.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

“We must learn to be still in the midst of activity and to be vibrantly alive in repose.” — Indira Gandhi

“When I was born, death kissed me. I kissed it back.” — Rainer Maria Rilke

“The whole life of man is but a point of time; let us enjoy it, therefore, while it lasts, and not spend it to no purpose.” — Plutarch — Of the Training of Children

Those of y’all who have been here frequently, (a habit, anout which, I’m sure most of y’all are a bit ambivalent… of course…), know of my ongoing battle with the process of introducing these Pearls…. Having to come up with something new, and different each day, while still making it worthwhile reading, is rather a daunting challenge, about which I consistently whine in a piteous, pitiable fashion…. Well, I’ll tell ya, I’m as tired of it as you are….

So, I’m again going to exercise my powers as Administrator, and as a Time Lord (I’m late again..) to get us out of here. I think a judicious use of #4 will work nicely, and so do you…. Y’all know this routine by now; put down your cups, make sure you’ve swallowed, and hang on. Luigi, while a professional, isn’t the most comfortable pilot to ride with; something to do with his time in Vietnam, as a copter door-gunner…. He doesn’t much care about danger, you see, having burned out all his neuronic receptors for that in what is left of his mind…. But, no worries, he gets an odd look in his eyes, but, he hasn’t crashed yet….

“Do not speak of what men deserve.   For we each of us deserve everything, every luxury that was ever piled in the tombs of the dead Kings, and we each of us deserve nothing, not a mouthful of bread in hunger.   Have we not eaten while another starved?  Will you punish us for that?  Will you reward us for the virtue of starving while others ate?  No man earns punishment, no man earns reward.  Free your mind of the idea of *deserving*, of *earning*, and you will begin to be able to think.” — Odo, The Prison Letters (Ursula LeGuin, _The Dispossessed_)

Dont keep calm

I’m still unable to bring myself to ranting state, so, here’s one from last year about this time….

From 4/4/2014:

The shadowy corporate snakeheads, (“snakeheads” is my newest shortcut name for the 1%,the rich and powerful who control the money and resources of this planet…. I use it because it is the English translation of the Chinese word for “slaver”, human traffickers who who dupe, or kidnap men, women, and children selling them into prostitution and/or slavery…. Thus, it becomes the perfect word to come after “corporate” when referring to one of those assholes….), who control the world, in their campaign to secure their position as the rulers of humanity, influenced the Shrubs enough during their terms in office that the Supreme Court justices they picked to replace dead judges were all their conservative buddies, all of whom are comfortably in the pockets of those self-same corporations. This, of course, has allowed the assholes who bought them to make even further inroads on our rights as individual citizens, by establishing the rights of corporations as superior to the rights of an individual….

A couple years ago, this led to the Citizens United decision, which gave the money-grubbers the opportunity to spend even more money on influencing politicians and elections, by forming giant Political Action Committees, where they could funnel millions of dollars into holding organizations, where it could be used for influencing elections, and to bribe congressional lawmakers…. That decision is a big part of how the Republican Party has managed to pass so many conservative laws in states around the nation, such as anti-abortion laws, and voting regulations which allow them to manipulate themselves into office, by providing obstacles which prevent the supporters of those who oppose them from voting….

Yesterday that decision was reinforced by yet another decision eroding our protection against corruption, a decision which removed most of the limits on how much money an individual can contribute, thus giving rich, avaricious, corrupt billionaires more say in Congress than the average citizen can match, allowing even more money to find a direct route into the Congressional pockets…. Below are two articles, from two sources, to offer a slightly different viewpoint (insofar as the media CAN be even-handed in their reporting….), just so we’re not limiting ourselves to one view…. C’mon back when you’re done, for what discussion may follow….

http://www.sfgate.com/politics/article/Supreme-Court-strikes-down-overall-political-5371989.php

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2014/04/02/supreme-court-campaign-finance/4481675/

I’m pissed…. I’m so pissed, all I feel like doing is sitting here typing obscene names to call those assholes, in Texas (where Jr. lives….), Maryland (I think that’s where Shrub, Sr. lives…), and Washington D.C, at the courthouse, (where the Supremes hang out….)…. My next feeling, which somehow reminds me very much of sheer, unadulterated rage, is one that may just prompt me to go out, find a gun store, giving in to the urge buy the guns I’ve been considering…. Don’t worry, I won’t forget the ammunition…. I may have been a practicing pacifist for a long time, but, mostly, at least in terms of personal survival, that was just a pose to get the draft board off my back…. I have no issue with the use of force in support of what I believe is right…

For today, though, I’ll give myself some slack, which will give you some relief, from having to listen to my ranting over stuff we can’t change…. At least, nothing will change without resorting to drastic measures, in which most ffolkes are unwilling to engage, lest they risk increasing their karmic burden…. I figure it this way…. If we DON’T give up our insistence on non-violence, we are all going to die….. that is for sure and for certain, if things don’t change very soon….

That means there won’t be any next reincarnation, not on this planet, because it won’t have us; we are being evicted from this plane of existence… So, I don’t have to worry about coming back as in a form with less karmic status, as we won’t be coming back HERE at all…. Our energy configuration will just have to find some other reality to inhabit, because Mother Earth isn’t likely to rent to us again…. We’re too hard on the property….

Ah, the hell with it…. I’m pissed…. or did I say that already? Okay, I’m done…. Since I’m not organized or coherent enough to produce a true rant (I don’t consider this loud complaint a rant…. not enough reasoning, or quite enough structure….), I’ll fall back on another old-school pearl to close this out for the day….. I’ll bet you’re cheering inside, right?…. Okay, then, here, have it your way….

“But groundless hope, like unconditional love, is the only kind worth having.” — EFF co-founder John Perry Barlow, “Cynthia Horner’s Eulogy”, Apr. 1994

Unsolicited Gratitude
Fear becomes familiar when reality bodes us ill
pain assumes first position, no matter our will.
Powerless, we founder, no strength to prevail
anguished and afraid, against unwanted Fate we rail.

Still, a grain of hope deep inside, hidden well against need
gives us reason to survive, our starving souls to feed.
Failure of courage burdens time, of being bested,
until our souls, in submission, become foully infested.

Bitter tears wash through us each day, with little care,
no thought, no feeling, no wish, or need to be fair.
Rendered clueless, confusion falls upon us, as prey,
we surrender a piece of our soul, little as we may.

Yet, always, a bright beam of hope is seen from afar,
no matter how dreary, or dark, it may seem where we are.
None knows, nor would consent to tell, it seems
from whence it hails, or why it so brightly gleams.

Saving our sanity, absolving our unwanted fears,
dispelling the myths and lies that come with the years.
Each man has known the precious gift that hope may give
And gives glad thanks, as long as he may live.

OMG! So SCARY!… Dragon Style Tai Chi!

So much for good intentions…. Having slept two full hours past my normal time to awake, I’m running WAY behind. As would be expected, this condition produces a mild feeling of panic, which I must throw aside, ignoring it to the best of my ability, if I am to have any hope of getting this done. Especially considering the state of mind I find myself in, which somewhat resembles a bowl of oatmeal…. Bland, inoffensive, and BORING…. even if it’s good for you…

So far as I can tell, that oatmeal isn’t overcooked, though, so, there is hope we may yet find our way into the body of today’s Pearl. Of course, that assumes I have the wherewithal to even produce something resembling our normal output. I’m not certain, exactly, how I’m getting THIS done, as I really don’t know what the hell I’m doing, or where I am going with this. More so than even our ‘normal’ state, we are somewhat befuddled, like a sloth awakened from a short sleep, blinking confusedly at the light, wondering just what or who I am…. SIGH….

Oh well. It’s been worse, I suppose, though I can’t recall when that might have been; past, present, future are all dark to me. In fact, so dark, rather than fumble around any further, with no clue as to what may occur next, I think I’ll use this handy, dandy plot device I found laying here, to get us out of this poorly conceived, yet hopefully mundane effort to distract y’all from the actual mess we’ve come to inhabit. I can’t do anything about the excessive sweating y’all had to undergo, but, I will loan y’all some deodorant to get you home without offending your car’s co-inhabitants.

In addition, we won’t charge any extra for the extra time it takes to clean off the debris from your clothing; it is, after all, our own fault, for trying to keep up with the times. Sad to say, we’ve never been able to catch up, but, it’s fun to keep trying. Since I can’t think of a single thing to do to keep this up any longer, I suggest you hang on….. this will be a very sharp, fast dive back into reality, where we may once again set our imaginations free…..

Shall we Pearl?

We the People...

From 1/29/2015:

“A power has risen up in the government greater than the people themselves, consisting of many and various and powerful interests, combined into one mass, and held together by the cohesive power of the vast surplus in the banks.” — Johann L. Uhland (1787-1862) — Speech, May 27, 1836

Zowie! Eureka! I knew I’d heard this somewhere before, but, couldn’t remember the author’s name. In stating this observation, made not long after the US government was formed, the author takes the hand of Thomas Jefferson, who expressed his fear of exactly this happenstance, in numerous letters to friends before, and after, the signing of the Constitution. He recognized the overpowering ambition and thirst for power so obvious in those who embrace it, attempting to warn his fellow citizens, many times….

As is plain to see, nobody paid the slightest attention, whereupon the bankers, in close conjunction with their myrmidons, i.e., the pundits and lawyers, continued to pursue their evil intent, to secure their hold over government, and, thus, society…. They’ve been so successful, we see in today’s world, they control every level of the national scene; witness the number of Republican presidential candidates who have been sucking up to the Koch brothers, and the Citizens United PAC, with their unlimited pile of money, in use in today’s world buying the loyalty of every single politician they can pervert to their insane desire to make the world over in their own image…. It doesn’t seem to matter at all to them that image is a clear, crisp photograph of the worst HELL imaginable, or that it would entail oppressing 99% of the human race….

Why are many scientists using lawyers for medical experiments instead of rats?

 a)  There are more lawyers than rats.

 b)  The scientist’s don’t become as emotionally attached to them.

 c)  There are some things that even rats won’t do for money.

~~ Smart Bee ~~

Gee, do ya think I’ve lost some of my respect for lawyers, and their second-slimiest clients, the bankers? (First place in my hell is reserved for pimps, and those who abuse women, children, or  animals…. which, of course, lawyers and bankers do by proxy, with their usual complete indifference to the suffering of others….) Why no, of course not. I’ve lost ALL of it, with what I consider damn good reason, based on 64 years of observing the human drama, along with my own personal experience with both categories of asshole…. The only respect for any of them I have, is for those who actually HELP people, without considering what they can get out of it, other than their own satisfaction for helping people find justice, and a reasonable fee for that help, whether the fee is taken in pies & chickens, eternal gratitude, or simply cash….

In keeping with today’s theme of picking on lawyers and bankers, and, to save energy for my upcoming battle, I decided to pick out an old school pearl, aimed at the former, as they’re an easier target, all in all…. They’re just SO…… weaselly! Well, there are some are exceptions, sure, but, the others infest the world so prominently, the good ones are hard to find…. Ah well, here are some observations about them, from Smart Bee, and a number of other people who feel the same as most everybody else, about those lawyers who use their skills to benefit themselves, showing complete indifference as to whether it benefits anyone else….

Liar, n.: A lawyer with a roving commission. — Ambrose Bierce, “The Devil’s Dictionary”

“A group of white South Africans recently killed a black lawyer because he was black. That was wrong. They should have killed him because he was a lawyer.” — A. Whitney Brown

“Always take a lawyer with you, and bring another lawyer to watch him.” — Bo Diddly’s Observation on the Law

“Fleas can be taught nearly everything a lawyer can.” — Smart Bee

“Here’s an amazing story. A man in Orlando, Florida, was hit by eight cars in a row and only one stopped. The first seven drivers thought he was a  lawyer. The eighth was a lawyer.” — Jay Leno

“If a lawyer and an IRS agent were both drowning, and you could only save one of them, would you go to lunch or read the paper?” — Smart Bee

“In a man’s world…simian aptitudes are rated high, and so not too many women get in. To succeed as a lawyer, for example, a woman would have to throttle two of her chief attributes: her disdain for the petty accumulations of useless knowledge, and her sharp feeling for the truth. What men in their imbecility consistently mistake for a deficiency of intelligence in women is merely an incapacity for mastering small and trivial tricks.” — H. L. Mencken, Chicago _Sunday Tribune_, January 8, 1928

“In the Norse mythology Loki originally was on the side of the rest of the gods, helping them once or twice using particularly nasty forms of trickery. He was a cunning negotiator with a talent for technicalities. He was sort of the Norse equivalent of a lawyer, no doubt the reason they tied him down in a pit dripping acidic venom on him.” — Martin Terman

“How many lawyers does it take to change a light bulb? You won’t find a lawyer who can change a light bulb. Now, if you’re looking for a lawyer to screw a light bulb… ” — Smart Bee

LAWYER: A professional advocate hired to bend the law on behalf of a paying client; for this reason considered the most suitable background for entry into politics. — Definition from “THE CYNIC’S DICTIONARY”

Needless to say, I could do this forever, no sweat, or guilt; there are already nine pearls, and I’ve only used three of the ten pages of quotes I’ve collected on the subject. But, I suppose there ARE more productive things we could all be doing. This is pretty cool, but, as with all good things, it can’t last forever…. Onward, into the day….

Oh, hell…. Naturally, AFTER I’ve finished, I find the PERFECT pearl for this group. Since we’ve already completed it, I’ll just tack it here on the end, where it will enjoy its highlighted position; I call it perfect because it takes a shot at two categories at once, both of which are current players in my personal drama…. This one tells it like it is, for sure and for certain….

In order to avoid blame, and keep to the now ruined schedule, here is another of my older poems….

Fine and Good, Good and Fine

A pig in a poke’s got nothing on me,
cuz I’m as confused as a man can be.
This ol’ world’s got me spinnin’ around
cussin’ and spittin’, a penny for a pound.

Forty ‘leven times since I was a kid, well,
I’ve fallen in love, ‘least too close to tell.
Every damn time, it all went to crap,
Forty ‘leven times I’ve felt like a sap.

‘Course, each time it happens, I forget the last;
why not? I’m havin’ such a blast….
Livin’ in each moment, filled with joie de vivre,
’til it’s all gone away again, nothin’ left up my sleeve.

Don’t want y’all to think I’m sad or blue,
life’s full of sorrow, lots for me, and/or you..
T’other side of that coin, we can be glad,
is joyful love, and that ain’t at all bad.

My road’s been littered with parts o’my heart,
each one colored with trust, which ain’t always smart.
Yet, long as I don’t lose my connection to joy,
I’ll find my own true love, and be a happy boy.

It’s been some kinda fun, even when I’d take a fall,
and doin’ it over makes no sense at all, at all
Day after day, I keep on keepin’ on, as it’s said;
Guess I’ll keep on doin’ that ’til I’m dead.

‘Nuff said….

I’m not entirely sure what it’s saying, but, it definitely has something to say…. I’d pay attention, if I were y’all… there might be something in there more important than it seems at first read…. It won’t be on the Quiz, unless, of course, they’re lying to me, too….. Ah well, it’s a fun read, anyway, so, enjoy!….

Creme Bruleé, Very Nicely Done

The Way that can be known is not the true Way. This is a Truth, so deep, so wide, so all-encompassing, it surpasses the ability of Man to fully comprehend, without a lifetime of study, and thought. In fact, finding the Way can be said to be the very meaning and purpose of Life, for those of us to whom such matters are important. I have sought to understand this principle for a very long time now, and feel I’ve made some progress, to the extent of knowing I still have far to go….

But, as Lao Tzu said, in another part of the Tao Teh Ching, a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step; this means I may yet reach the point where it is possible to become aware of that which I seek, which is the same goal all of us have, in one sense, i.e., peace of spirit and mind. Finding that ultimate connection to Reality, for me, is the only goal for anyone who wishes to understand themselves, and their place in the greater scheme of things.

All that being said, I am making plans to help myself on the road to inner freedom, by placing myself in contest with the real world, to test my resolve…. At my age, and in my physical condition, it will, indeed, be a test of major proportion, with challenges on a daily basis that can only be met by becoming at one with the road…. a very different life than the one most of our society pursues…. I will be removing myself from the standard way of life, of having a home, and a job, and staying in one place…. Instead, I will be moving across the map of the world, from place to place, spending as much time in each as I wish, or require, then moving on to new sights, new sounds, new people, to test myself against the world….

I don’t know how long I’ll be on pilgrimage; I suppose I’ll know better once I have been on the move long enough to identify my own desires, to find what path I will take…. To begin, I will make hegira to see my oldest friends, now scattered around the country. Once I’ve seen them, then I believe I’ll go out of country for a time, to see how the rest of the world is getting along, from street level. I’ve been watching it now for a long time through the lens of TV, and the Internet; I imagine the real world is a bit different than what we can see there….  but, I can only KNOW by going there to see….

So, in about six weeks, this blog will again change, to accommodate the needs of the road; I’ll do my best to continue to post daily, but, it may take some time to establish a movable routine to get it done without the comfort of a home base. I know I’ll mostly be posting from Starbuck’s, or the like; wherever I can find a free wi-fi hot spot…. In the meantime, I’ll try to keep it light, or, at least, not completely dark…. Sure I will….

In any case, now I’ve let the cat out of the bag, so to speak, I’ll go see what I can find for today’s Pearl…. I think we’re legal by now, so, we’ll just take our leave here, without having to apply any emergency methods to get gone…. In fact, here we go now…..

Shall we Pearl?

I’m running late, again…. Rather than saddle y’all with an old rant, here is a short discussion of the Way, from 2012….

From 5/10/2012:

The path is the way.
The way is the truth.
It is found, but not held;
walked on, but not followed.

~~ Tao Teh Ching ~~

When I was 16, my father took me on a trip to visit the UC Berkeley campus, to see if I really wanted to attend there after high school. We drove up from our home near the Central Coast of California to the burgeoning megalopolis on the east side of the SF Bay where Berkeley sits, with my eyes and mind on overdrive, taking in a completely new landscape, one completely foreign to my naive mind, which had spent most of the previous years living in a town of 750 souls. In retrospect, I don’t think that I could have made any other decision, as I was in the throes of intellectual ecstasy, taking in vast amounts of new perceptions and experiences as fast as I could swivel my head.

One of the places we visited on campus was the bookstore at the student union. Having been a book addict since the age of 9 or so, it was like falling into heaven. My dad had a hard time getting me to leave to go look at other stuff, as I was entranced by all the books I’d never seen. On a table near the check-out stands, on a clearance table, was a slim book with a beautiful black and white image of a typical Chinese painting of mountains with bamboo shoots in the foreground, and some ideograms running down the side. The English title of the book, at the top, read merely, “Tao Teh Ching”. Visually, it was the most beautiful book I’d ever seen. Little did I know how much that simple tome would change my whole life, and the way I viewed the world.

It goes without saying at this point that I bought the book. On the drive home, I lost myself in Lao Tzu’s 88 verses that comprise the Tao Teh Ching, and have been lost in the beauty and truth they provide ever since. “The Way that can be known is not the true Way.” That is the first line of the book, as per that translation, and my mind was freed from all its previous restraints. It was as if I had been awakened from a long sleep, and awoke with eyes so clear that only the truth could be seen. My father, I’m sure, thought I’d lost all sanity as I read, gasped, and made little moans of awakening surprise at the things that the book showed me. It is a day I will never forget, and one that, in my mind, set me on the scholar/warrior’s path that I have walked to this day…..

Only one of my poems will do for today; it’s as close as I’ve come to a poem on such matters…. Please enjoy, simple as it is, it has a good message…. even if it doesn’t rhyme….

Early Observations

Until I knew there was more,
I wanted to know God.
They said he was a nice guy,
and would let me live forever.

All I had to do, they said,
was live my life for Him,
always living by scripture
cleaving only to his Way.

But, everyone I saw in church,
acted different at home.
Living wild, cussin’ and fussin’,
nobody lived like they said.

Still, I tried to be like Jesus,
he was sort of cool.
He never hurt nobody
and walked on the right path.

‘Course they killed him for that,
they couldn’t stand his example.
Turned him into a martyr,
hid his real words among their own.

Then I found the Buddha,
and met Lao Tzu at the gate.
They saw things real different,
showed me how to see straight.

Right thought, and right action
replace blind obedience and faith.
Reality becomes manageable,
fear retreats, the universe expands.

Brother John said it pretty well,
“Imagine there’s no heaven,
it’s easy if you try.”
Sounds like he knew why.

Day to day, life is grand,
we walk in eternal beauty.
Open your eyes and hearts,
find yourself already immortal.

Since this will be, possibly, the latest Pearl ever, I see little point in worrying overmuch about this intro. The cat in the picture will be sufficient, I believe, to get us down the page; who doesn’t like cats? (Well, we know there are SOME who don’t, but, we consider them to be sub-humans, who wouldn’t be reading this anyway….) Pair it up with a quote with the power of Seneca’s statement, and, you’ve got something…. I’ll leave it as an exercise for the Gentle Reader to ascertain what that something may be….

Me, I’m going to meander on down to the next section, & pick out a video for us all to watch, or listen to, as we finish the rest of this mess today…. Me, while I type, and, y’all, as you read and ponder, or laugh, or cry out in disgust at what you may find here today; I’m sure whatever I find will be just fine for that purpose…. Okay, you’re right, the odds are no better for that than for any other pearl,  but, hey, who would bother if I didn’t show a bit of enthusiasm, eh? A blog’s gotta have readers, right? Right….

Now we’ve settled that, I’m going to again apply our fast-becoming-famous method #4 to get us out of the intro; it should be an interesting ride today, as we got our monthly maintenance report, and we know the vehicle needs some work. The stress and strain of using a #4 today COULD put us over the edge there, but, hey, the insurance is paid up, so, even if we lost ALL of y’all, your families would be taken care of…. Small chance of that, though, I’m counting on the safety foam…. Either way, we’re going in, and we’re going in NOW….. Somebody hold on to the chickens, would you?….. We don’t want them to fly up in the pilot’s eyes just now….

Shall we Pearl?

Today’s video selection is more than meets the eye…. Yes, I know such is often the case here on ECR, where we play fast and loose with metaphor, not to mention how we treat the slippery slopes of Reality; today, it’s even more true…. Little introduction is needed for this one, as everyone in our culture knows The Zone. Anyone who doesn’t is either younger than five, or has been living in a cave for a long while…. Besides, it fits in perfectly with my mood today…. which is, to say the least, a bit strange…. Enjoy your little trip into fantasy, ffolkes….

Morning muse

In case y’all couldn’t tell, I pretty much gave up on this Pearl a while back…. For some of you, there was a clue; for others, a higher degree of confusion was the most probable result, if not outright nausea. However, I will now proceed to hand over the reins to SB for the final section, so, you can’t blame this one on me….. Let’s see what happens….

“If what the philosophers say be true,–that all men’s actions proceed from one source; that as they assent from a persuasion that a thing is so, and dissent from a persuasion that it is not, and suspend their judgment from a persuasion that it is uncertain,–so likewise they seek a thing from a persuasion that it is for their advantage.” — Epictetus (c. 60 AD) — Discourses, Book i, Chap. xviii

“Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet.” — Roger Miller

“Man is not disturbed about things, but by his opinion about things.” — Epictetus

“Beware of altruism. It is based on self-deception, the root of all evil.” — Lazarus Long

“Thou seest how few be the things, the which if a man has at his command his life flows gently on and is divine.” — Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (121-180 AD) — Meditations, ii, 5

“The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creature that cannot.” — Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens), What Is Man? (1906)

“On the other hand, life can be an endless parade of TRANSSEXUAL QUILTING BEES aboard a cruise ship to DISNEY WORLD if only we let it!!” — Zippy the Pinhead

Okay, well…. not too bad, I think. The last line MAY have pushed it over the top. but, otherwise, I’d say it works just fine as an appropriate ending note for today’s misshapen mess…. I believe, as well, one more pearl is necessary, to make this a truly unique, eight-star pearl, while simultaneously bringing it to a complete, crashing halt….

“Nobody leaves here till they sing the blues.” — Albert King, to Elizabeth Shue, in “Adventures in Babysitting”

I would be derelict in my duty to comment upon this Pearl, as is patently obvious. In fact, I’m going to bail right here, and right now. See y’all tomorrow, ffolkes, hopefully in a more timely fashion….

Y’all take care out there,

Mornings scuk. Or, skcu. Hell, they uksc. Damn, what’s up with that? Mornings SUCK! There, that’s better….

I haven’t a clue as to why that word refused to be typed correctly until it was shouted… It did get the point across though, that point being the suckitude we are experiencing today…. It is, perhaps, too early to be coining new words, perfectly relevant though they may be; I do like this one, though. “Suckitude” has a lot of chutzpah, telling a story of misery and blahness quite accurately…. Hey, look, it’s another new word! I’d better be careful, I think; we haven’t filed any papers on any of these, and the grammar nazis can be fierce here on WP….

In fact, I think I’ll stop taking chances right here, right now. I’m not in any kind of space to deal with those protectors of modern English; they get too fanatic for me…. In fact, I don’t have much at all today, not in the way of bright, or clever, or even rational. In fact, I’ll be very fortunate to be able to pull this Pearl into any sort of reasonable shape to get posted. In the interests of getting that chosen Duty done, I’m going to ruthlessly employ our most efficient, most eco-friendly, and, most importantly, our cheapest method for moving us along, to wit: emergency tool #4, which, as y’all know, works like this….

Shall we Pearl?

Dont keep calm

I have nothing. This one, from the archives, will have to do….

From 2/10/2014:

“The books that the world calls immoral are the books that show the world its own shame.” — Oscar Wilde

It’s almost certain now…. I’m convinced the government is actively restraining themselves in this past week, deliberately trying to NOT do anything that makes the news…. The only articles in the past few days are all just follow-up stories on other older news, or what are called ‘fluff’ pieces, designed merely to take up space on the page, without actually serving up any real information about anything important…. Kind of like the “Dumb” Starbucks story today in the SFGATE headlines…. You know there is probably a conspiracy to control the news when the primary article on a Monday morning has to do with a corporate logo dispute in Southern California….

Now, one might surmise that this means that the psychopaths who inhabit the halls of government in this country are busy carrying on the business of the nation, out of plain sight in order to avoid distractions…. It would be more accurate, I’d think, to say they are definitely involved in the hatching of new schemes, er, making of plans, plans for making progress in their chosen task, that of total world domination…. Well, maybe that’s a bit harsh…. But, you can bet your bony ass that whatever they’re up to, will benefit themselves more than it does anyone else… They can’t help that, it’s a genetic imperative for them…. They are preconditioned to selfishness, and a complete lack of compassion for others….

Oh, these sickos we have in our elected offices are slick, though, aren’t they? To look at them, and to hear them talk, you’d think they did nothing but sit around all day and worry about how tough things are for you, and the rest of the common masses over whom they preside, with the implied purpose of spending all their time looking for ways to improve your lot…. It often astounds me just how many idiots in the mainstream of society will talk as if what I just described is the gospel truth, and goes to describe their own chosen heroes in the public eye….  They will go to any lengths to convince others of their candidate’s sterling qualities, often going so far as to claim a touch of nobility upon the brow of their champion….

I no longer bother even telling those folks how stupid they are, because they’re already addicted to the sugar that is poured into their ears, to take the place of real information, or actual intelligent ideation…. Hell, even when one speaks to them, they refuse to listen to anything that disagrees with their own misconceptions…. I used to try to convince them of how they were hurting themselves with their blind obedience to a shadow, but, I got tired of bandaging my forehead, after beating it against the wall of their stubborn ignorance….

Instead, I started making Pearls, and, in the solace of that task I found the peace my mind needs to continue to think clearly, as well as the means to say what needs to be said, even if I’m the only one who knows what the hell I mean…. Hence, it becomes clear that I have once more completely pulled wool over the eyes of those present, as all of this is merely a way of introducing the following group of pearls, forming a pearl, whose parameters, if I’m lucky, will match what I’ve written above…. and, if not, well, we can always shoot for funny…. Enjoy!…..

“Those who are clever, who have a Brain, never understand anything.” — Pooh’s Little Instruction Book, inspired by A. A. Milne

“Seeing death as the end of life is like seeing the horizon as the end of the ocean.” — David Searls

“It is the mark of our whole modern history that the masses are kept quiet with a fight. They are kept quiet by the fight because it is a sham-fight; thus most of us know by this time that the Party System has been popular only in the sense that a football match is popular.” — G. K. Chesterton, A Short History of England. 156

“Don’t confuse me with the facts – my mind is made up.” — Joe Average, NYC

(In a 1998 study, in which random people on a street in New York were asked to pick, out of four statements, the one that described their Congressman the best, this was the favorite, by a factor of 28…. Truth…. Yes, it is…. no I’m not lying, trust me….) (Okay, yes, I am…. but, it SOUNDS true….)

“The NY Times is read by the people who run the country.  The Washington Post is read by the people who think they run the country.   The National Enquirer is read by the people who think Elvis is alive and running the country…” — Robert J Woodhead (trebor@biar.UUCP)

“Idolatry is committed, not merely by setting up false gods, but also by setting up false devils; by making men afraid of war or alcohol, or economic law, when they should be afraid of spiritual corruption and cowardice.” — G. K. Chesterton, Illustrated London News, 9/11/09

“All cruelty springs from weakness.” — Seneca

Okay, so it came out a bit more comprehensive in scope than I first intended it to be, but, it works anyway…. The politicians are in there, for sure (See the first, third, fourth, and fifth pearls above for proof of that)…. But, the parameters widened up on me, mid-search, so, a few more ideas are included than we bargained for…. bonus!

Here is a poem from the archives, to keep the blame for all of this where it belongs….

Random Exposure

If I only knew what I was doing here,
I could give others a clue.
Reality gets stranger every year,
and I’m not sure what I should do.

Singing happy old tunes, in an old, gravely voice,
gives me a lot of pleasure.
I’m only glad I can still make a choice,
to look at life, to take its measure.

Memorable moments keep passing by
gilded, framed in precious emotion.
I never have to ask anyone why,
no need for a stronger potion.

Everything in life is clear, to me
there is no doubt, no misunderstanding.
We’re all good, as you can see,
members of Life, in good standing.

Life can be hard, or it can be great fun;
the right path is there for each of us to take.
That choice is often a difficult one;
pay close attention to the choice you make.

Today’s final pearl is the closest to our normal material we can offer…. It’s an excellent seven-star pearl, giving us some great advice on how to live a Life Well Lived…..

A little Madness in the Spring
Is wholesome even for the King.

“Make no judgments where you have no compassion.” — Anne Mc Caffrey

“The wake does not drive the boat.” — Alan Watts

“Give, expecting nothing thereof” — St. Thomas Aquinas

“A person is not given integrity. It results from the relentless pursuit of honesty at all times.” — Smart Bee

“It takes a long time to bring excellence to maturity.” — Publius Syrus (42 BC) — Maxim 780

“Do you have the patience to wait till your mud settles and the water is clear?

Can you remain unmoving till the right actions arises by itself?”

Stealing candy from babies is trickier than it seems…. Ask any Senator…

Ffolkes,

“Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.”

~~Buddha, paraphrased ~~

buddhacat

I would comment upon the most excellent picture and opening quote from the Buddha, but, it seems Murphy has picked today to reassert his bully persona; he KNOWS how much I hate it when he fucks with my coffee…. He must be pissed because I’m making changes which will make things harder for him to fuck with me at all; he might be getting his shots in while he can…. Whatever the reason, it pisses me off no end when I have to clean up a mess, complete with coffee grounds, before I even get a chance to drink any of it….. SIGH….. Assholes are everywhere these days….

They’re everywhere I look, anyway. Can’t seem to turn around these days without bumping into some sort of reminder of how such asininity becoming the norm in today’s world, obnoxiously pushing its way into every part of our lives. The restrictive measures society is taking to ensure the profit margins and safety of those who hoard all the resources for themselves are becoming Orwellian in nature, with the government trying to take over almost every facet of our lives…. for our own good, naturally.

Maybe this is why Murphy is so happy these days. The evil attitudes, and shockingly violent, repressive nature of what is taking place all over the world, as incident after incident of insanity is portrayed, to keep the public in a state of panic, so the elite may go about securing ever more power, and money, and control over the rest of the world, regardless of the suffering, and pain, and misery they cause, seem to be coming to crescendo, almost as if the species is beginning to realize just what kind of irretrievable mess we’ve created for ourselves, and the danger of extinction every one of us, including the assholes, will be facing in the coming SHORT time until it is too late….

Well, that was fun, wasn’t it? I’m not sure what prompted such a vitriolic rant so early, but, there it sits; we’ll all have to deal with it as best we may. What that means for the rest of the Pearl isn’t clear, nor may it ever be. Clarity may be well beyond our capabilities at the present time, so, I wouldn’t count on any improvement. Our only saving grace is in the very fortunate happenstance of having completed virtually all of this one yesterday, and the day before…. Lucky for me, I’ve been so worked up I can’t seem to stop writing…. At least it allows me to maintain a reasonable semblance of sanity….

Well, I think so; how about y’all? Have I been any less crazy? Or more? Who knows? Moreover, who cares? Not me, and certainly not the Asininnies; they’d just as soon people like me spend as much time in that state as possible; keeps me out of their hair…. Ah well, it’s all pretty futile, both in imagination, and in Reality, so, since there is little point in belaboring such an issue, let’s see if we can’t find a path out of this dark, boring place we’ve come to, and get the hell out of this intro…. I don’t like it anymore….

Shall we Pearl?

“Every day should be passed as if it were to be our last.” — Publius Syrus (42 BC) — Maxim 633

I’ve heard about this experiment before, but, hadn’t thought about it in a while. It’s a pretty clear explanation of one of the most effective tools used by those in power to keep the “monkeys” distracted, and busy in their cages, doing exactly what they are supposed to do, produce, while being manipulated into passive submission to custom, never knowing at all why they are doing what they do….. Pay attention, ffolkes, you see this every day on TV…. You didn’t even know you were being molded while watching, did you?….. Well, guess what? You are…. One of the basic reasons I don’t watch it at all anymore; I got tired of watching bullshit fly….

“History, although sometimes made up of the few acts of the great, is more often shaped by the many acts of the small.” — Mark Yost

This statement, while true in one sense, is not completely accurate in the modern world. Unfortunately, in today’s world, the few of great power have manipulated the many, many acts of the small to serve their own interests, with no regard for the welfare of those they manipulate. They do this with the aid of the ostensible leaders of society, who are also under the spell of lies they believe to be true.

These leaders, puppets themselves, act as the educational, administrative, and enforcement cadre for the real Beloved Ruling Class, those privileged elite who teach, organize society, and impose order upon each generation of new human drones, following the example of generation after generation of their ancestors. In truth, each generation offers up their freedom and dignity, for the promise of a chance at their dreams, which they can never fulfill in this life, but, are promised as reward, given to them after they die, in exchange for submitting themselves to the beliefs they are told….

In addition to the pundits, and the preachers, who control the parents, even more control is added by the tacit, unwitting complicity of the communications media. In today’s world of radio, TV, and computers, with the unlimited possibilities of the Internet, they become the front line for the monied elite, spreading the outright untruths, and reams of misinformation necessary to deliver their messages of manipulated truth, across the entire globe, within moments, pulling ever more people into their web of lies…. all with the unwitting help of people who believe they are doing the right thing, by telling what they believe to be true….

To be persuasive, we must be believable.

To be believable, we must be credible.

To be credible, we must be truthful.

~~ Edward R. Murrow ~~

Ah, Ed, such a fine sentiment, and very good for a reporter to believe, since any reporter who buys into this will always be popular, both with the public, and with the leaders of the political and religious worlds, all of whom dance to the tune played by those who control the money and resources of the world, the bankers, as they were called by Thomas Jefferson. Now, we call them “corporate persons”, the relatively small group of completely amoral, avaricious, sociopathic families who have, throughout the history of mankind, corrupted every level of society, convincing them to adopt the lies they have passed off as the truth, for millennia.

The first group, the public, with their gullible, misplaced trust in those in authority, (based on their desire to not think, or take responsibility for their lives… to take the EASY way….), will like such a reporter very much, often listening solely to him as their favorite source, (which they did for Mr. Murrow), for they will feel they can trust what he tells them; they firmly believe he tells them the truth because he believes it to be true, or he wouldn’t say it. If he tells them Commies are not to be trusted, they will refuse to wear red; if he tells them they are in danger, they submit to further loss of their freedom, in the name of security….

The leaders, will love such influential mouthpieces, because he will be one of their most effective tools of manipulation, for they do not abide by this credo at all, except to recognize how powerfully people will believe it, in their desire to remove the fear of the unknown fostered by those in charge. The manipulators simply follow the precept as far as the last word, then, instead of truth, they say exactly what they know will produce the effect they desire, whether it is remotely true, or not. For their purposes, if it is not true, so much the better, for it confirms their control of the media, the so-called political and political leaders, AND the public, to do their bidding, without ever realizing they are being controlled.

( If you want to know part of the reason those in power are able to achieve their ends so easily, read this graphic infogram:  https://i.stack.imgur.com/MyQki.jpg) (Or, watch the video, above….)

I’m done. I’m burnt. To finish this off properly, (well, properly for this blog…), here are some pearls which speak to one part or another of the above discussion/rant/indictment/whatever it was…. sort of. I think. If not, well, forget the whole thing. Nobody’s really listening, not so’s it will make any real difference in what happens out there in the Big Blue Room, anyway….

“You were born into a society which spelled out with brutal clarity, and in as many ways as possible, that you were a worthless human being. You were not expected to aspire to excellence; you were expected to make peace with mediocrity. Wherever you have turned, you have been told where you could go and what you could do ( and _how_  you could do it) and where you could live and whom you could marry. I know your countrymen do not agree with me a about this, and I hear them saying, “You exaggerate.” — James Baldwin,_The Fire Next Time_, 1964

“Are we at last brought to such a humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our own defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in our own possession and under our own direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the _real_ object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands?” — Patrick Henry

“Gun Control – the belief that government, with its great wisdom and moral superiority, can be trusted with a monopoly on deadly force.” — Smart Bee

“A right delayed is a right denied.” — Smart Bee

“We’re not doing it for money, we’re doing it for a SHITLOAD of money!” — The American Dream, rephrased to more closely resemble Reality….

“There is no crueler tyranny than that which is perpetrated under the shield of law and in the name of justice.” — Montesquieu, 1742

Bigot? Fundamentalist? Love guns?  The Republicans want YOU!” — Smart Bee, being downright vicious, but, pretty accurate, all things considered.

“When once infidelity can persuade men that they shall die like beasts, they will soon be brought to live like beasts also.” — South

“We are here and it is now.  Further than that all human knowledge is moonshine.” — H. L. Mencken

As I’ve previously mentioned, I think Charles is one of the finest poets to come out of the Twentieth Century…. His poetry is so real, it hurts….

Alone With Everybody

the flesh covers the bone
and they put a mind
in there and
sometimes a soul,
and the women break
vases against the walls
and the men drink too
much
and nobody finds the
one
but keep
looking
crawling in and out
of beds.
flesh covers
the bone and the
flesh searches
for more than
flesh.

there’s no chance
at all:
we are all trapped
by a singular
fate.

nobody ever finds
the one.

the city dumps fill
the junkyards fill
the madhouses fill
the hospitals fill
the graveyards fill

nothing else
fills.

Hmm… As I constructed several of the pearls you have seen in the last few days, I collected a few extra pearls, & saved them in one file location for later use. When I came to work on this section, I found the following seven stars, each a pearl in good standing; together, they speak to us of Life, at Large…. Go figure…

“It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority.  By  definition, there are already enough people to do that.” — G. H. Hardy

“I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.” — Fred Allen

“Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe. And what do we teach our children in school? We teach them that two and two make four and that Paris is the capital of France. When will we also teach them what they are?” — Pablo Casals

HUMAN: The human being either evolved from the biologically very similar ape, or was created along with the rest of the world in a six-day creative spurt by an anonymous god. The human body is a wonderful thing. Well, most of them are. Humans have one mouth and a limited number of genitals, which is probably just as well. — Daniel Bowen’s TOXIC CUSTARPEDIA

“Humans hardly ever learn from the experience of others. They learn – when they do, which isn’t often – on their own, the hard way.” — Robert Heinlein, Time Enough for Love

“Change cannot be avoided….Change provides the opportunity for innovation.  It gives you the chance to demonstrate your creativity.” — Keshavan Nair

“As long as you live, keep learning how to live.” — Seneca

I don’t know. I’m not sure any more. But, since it’s the only thing currently working to save my sanity, I guess I’ll keep on doing this, at least, until I can figure out whether I can get the same sort of relief from hunting. I’ve never been one to enjoy it, but, it’s almost time, I think, to take it up, as has always been my plan…. We’ll see; big changes comin’, one way, or t’other…. Count on it, ffolkes…. Meantime, y’all stay alert out there, not just because the world can use all the lerts we can find; it could save your OWN butt….. See y’all tomorrow….

The View Outside the Door Into Summer

(Thanks to Clifford D. Simak)

Alright. Admit it! You have no idea who I am!

But, then, the reverse is also true. Since we’re on even ground, perhaps we can just drop the whole matter, by agreeing to move on to some sort of mutually agreeable task, rather than such a controversial, ultimately unproductive interaction, which can only end badly. It’s way too early in the Pearl to even consider such a possibility; we’ve got a long way to go.

We also have seven good reasons to find….. Today’s title keeps niggling at my brain; I HATE that. As most of y’all are aware by now, the titles of these posts have no meaning, at least, not to me, and not in relation to whatever I write here. I merely string together words which make a compelling, funny, or somehow eye-catching title, with no intent to ever connect it to the blog post. Some days, such as today, the words I came up with, while exactly what I needed, seems to stick in my head, until I figure out why…. Very distracting, when one is trying to cudgel one’s brain into coming up with something more coherent than ‘ugh’, or Red’s favorite all-purpose word sound, ‘meh’….

It’s also a big waste of my time, efficiency-wise, as I’m usually trying to figure out just what to put in this section, my biggest challenge of all of those I’ve come to use as part of this blog. The ironic part of all this is, no matter how hard I try, or what I do, I still need an intro section, just to get to the rest. It is both logical, and real, ffolkes. You can’t start without a beginning…

One might think I’d finally gone off the deep end, wouldn’t one? One might be right about that. But, then, one can never tell, can one? Or, even two…. On that silly note….

Leonard Cohen is a truly iconic artist. When young, he made his initial impression on the public with what the public took for comedy, but, was actually philosophy in disguise. Later, he began to sing, and write songs and music to be sung; in this he also achieved a rather unique distinction, as a singer/songwriter distinctly unlike anyone else. Here is a compilation, made by You Tube, of his early comedy works, with some music mixed in.

As usual, following the link gives the Gentle Reader the option to choose their own videos to watch of his, as there are literally hundreds of related videos listed with each one playing on screen. Enjoy, ffolkes, he’s a REAL human artist, who made it his own way…. A true Singer, in the Samuel R. Delaney tradition… (See the S. R. Delaney story, “Time, Considered as a Helix of Semi-Precious Stones”)

Dont keep calm
Okay, everyone out of the gene pool!

Y’all know, since I harp on it nearly every day, I’m pretty sure we humans don’t have a lot of time left, to find some way to avoid falling prey to the same issue to which so many other forms of life, (including, possibly, our own…), have succumbed to in the past, to wit: we just don’t have what it takes to survive in this universe. Since I’m not presently inclined to, yet again, preach to the choir in a fresh rant, here is one from the archives, which clearly demonstrates I’ve held this opinion for some time now, along with a great deal of evidence to support my theory/opinion…. Enjoy, ffolkes… If nothing else, it’s a good way to stretch those mind-muscles for a few minutes…. maybe more than just a few….

From 2/8/2014:

This pearl will be displayed in the new format I’ve been working on as a change of scene around here…. These are headlines from SFGATE, a news web site I use as an average news collector, as it tends to display a fairly even grouping of the world’s and nation’s news, without TOO much bias, though certainly not without any…. The headlines I’ve included below, viewed as a big picture, are, as we can see, downright fucking crazy in how they portray the insanity so prevalent in today’s society…. Here then are more indications we are currently living through Heinlein’s “Crazy Years” here in America…. My comments, as always, are parenthesized for clarity….

http://blog.sfgate.com/energy/2014/02/07/tesla-driver-blames-fatal-crash-on-new-car-smell/

(I’m pretty sure I don’t need to make too many comments about this guy, or about how typically asinine he is, in as he cluelessly exhibits not only his selfishness, but, also his stupidity in public, without any idea of how ridiculous he sounds or appears to others….. “New car smell?” As the justification for running over a pedestrian? I suppose, in one way, it’s a perfect example of both the corruption so prevalent, and of the lack of any sort of system of ethics at play, in the lawyers who took the case to bring suit, as well as in the sense of entitlement that the average American asshole feels, to think that they can escape any consequences for their actions by finding a loophole in a law, or some weird psychiatric justification for acts that were at best, stupid, and at worst, deliberately, carelessly, and, feloniously, ignorant….)

http://www.sfgate.com/crime/article/Elderly-woman-slain-in-Oakland-home-invasion-5215511.php

(Again, no comment is necessary to make any clearer how sick our society has become, when there are people in the world who can actually perform these kinds of acts, without any compassion, or any connection to how another person feels…. I didn’t read the article, as I’ve seen its like too often to need to put myself through that again… I already know, having dealt with them for many years, the depths to which the human psyche can sink in its pain and reaction to a lifetime of abuse by the world…. It still doesn’t excuse any of it, or justify it, to understand why it happens…. But, it sure does make me want to go out, buy a gun, and start picking off some of the names, on my own personal list of those the world would be better off without….)

http://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/Russian-TV-shows-doctored-video-of-Olympic-rings-5214936.php

(More comedy from Russia and their current dictator, Vlad “Glad Impaler” Putin, trying to convince the world that hey, nothing wrong here, move along, nothing to see…. when, in fact, almost everything the world is seeing in Sochi points up another issue that the Soviet government has screwed up in its repressive attempts to maintain the status quo….. which, after all, is the ultimate purpose of any dictatorship, or essentially fascist government…. or ANY government, for that matter…. Democratic, Republic, Monarchic, no matter what form government takes, its bottom line priority is to maintain the status quo, to ensure the people stay out of the government’s way as they plunder, steal, and cheat…. The video to which the article refers is merely the latest symptom that shows exactly how the world’s society at large, and, Russian society in particular, is falling apart at the seams…..)

“A monied aristocracy in our country … has already set the government at defiance.” — Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)

(Whoops, gosh, look here! A stock trader cheated! A bank(er) was involved, a large, shadowy, amorphous corporation was involved, a government agency screwed up their job, a rich businessman profited, and the poor scapegoat is the only one to go to jail…. Have we seen this story before? Isn’t this a rather familiar scenario over the last, oh, 120 years or so? Why, yes, yes, I believe that’s so…. I can remember seeing stories exactly like this one 50 years ago, back in the 50’s and 60’s, as well as many from history that would be classed as clones of this one…. But, the media has to present each one as if it is some sort of big surprise…. SIGH…. It’s almost too easy for me, when they act this stupid….)

http://blog.sfgate.com/nov05election/2014/02/07/senate-judiciary-republicans-blame-a-lawyer-adegbile-for-a-client-abu-jamal/

(Oh, right, this one…. This is SO STUPID!!!! So stupid, it caused me to go momentarily insane, with my fingers flashing out four exclamation points without conscious control, just to vent my frustration…. You know, it’s completely possible that commenting on this story could turn into a rant….

The Republican Party has become a conglomeration of some of the stupidest, most hidebound fools I’ve ever witnessed, even in American politics, and remember…. I was there when we had both Spiro Agnew and Richard Nixon to push around, so, I KNOW about corrupt, greedy, amoral politicians….. This current group in the House, and the Senate, as well as spread throughout all the state’s houses of political machinery (chicanery?), are among the stupidest and most viciously ignorant that I’ve ever seen….

This particular set of idiots involved in this article are perhaps some of the most egregiously ignorant of the lot, and show the extent of how much the conservative mind has turned to mush over time, especially when dealing with issues that are, essentially, non-partisan in nature…. It seems to me that finding the most balanced people to be judges, or attorney general types, would benefit BOTH sides, more so than choosing biased people, who only make things worse for everyone…. Of course, I’m not stupid, I have no investment in pursuing my own agenda in this issue, nor do I desire to use the issue for any political gain, so, perhaps that would color my perceptions…. I certainly hope so….

Please note, I am certain, and have seen proof of the fact, that the Democrats are no brighter, in toto, or even, on average, but, somehow, they don’t seem to publicly stick their foot in it quite so frequently as the GOP pundits. I can’t blame the media for that, entirely, as they obviously have no more claim to intelligent design in their actions than do the politicians. Each of the political parties that dominate this country’s bureaucracy (it long ago ceased to function as anything else….) feels the media favors the other; that’s a typical reaction for a creature that suffers from paranoia, and the political scenario attracts schizophrenics like flowers draw bees…. (Actually, it would be more accurate to say that politics attracts the psychopathically insane like shit draws flies….. but, I won’t say that….) (Oh…. whoops….)

Nonetheless, it seems to me that BOTH of the parties that are currently ensconced in the halls of Congress in Washington have been taken over by a bunch of really, really selfish, more than stupid in their deliberate ignorance, rich, white, old men, with the random woman, African-Americans, Asian-Americans, and Latin-American tokens thrown in here and there to provide proof of our “diversity”….

The funny thing about those politicians of color or gender…. when they talk, they SOUND EXACTLY like a rich, white, stupid old man, no matter whether they are young, female, black, yellow, or brown…. Next time Ted Cruz puts out a sound bite on TV, close your eyes and listen…. He will not be distinguishable from any of his peers…. Note also, the terms to describe the token members of Congress deliberately set them apart as being ‘different’ Americans than the others, don’t they? They sure do, and that’s just fine with the old white dudes, as it provides camouflage for their inherent racism and bigotry, making them appear as if they welcome input, from those parts of society THE SILLY ASSES DON’T REALIZE ARE NOW IN THE MAJORITY IN THIS COUNTRY!…..

It’s too bad, really, and frustrating for those of us who can understand what is going on…. Intelligence is the only factor in our makeup that enhances our chances to survive, especially in the oncoming crisis in the environment of our planet, even though such intelligence has never proven its worth as a survival tool… These idiots are continually, and continuously, displaying behavior that is counter-productive to that survival…. and they don’t even have the wit to know it. In fact, most of them are so insanely wrapped up in pursuing their own agenda they refuse to even listen to anything that doesn’t fit in with their own preconceived misconceptions….. Idiots, every one of them….

Okay, that’s enough…. I could conceivably spend a very long time at this…. I’ve got a long litany of complaints about government, and those who indulge in that particular vice…. But, I’m getting worked up, and that’s making me tense, and that makes my back hurt…. So, for my health, I’m calling a halt to this rant…. (For my health…. right…. Can you see my skeptical expression?….) Since the entire rant, short as it may be, is in parentheses, I can do that without any permits, or even any hand signals….

gigoid has spoken…. So be it…..)

“When I think over what I have said, I envy dumb people.” — Seneca

Well, you know what they say…. Ignorance is bliss…..

Final note from 2015: Here is a fine, quite fitting closing pearl for the above rant…. (which is an interesting rant, in and of itself; the section below the last link used is completely parenthesized! What a brilliant concept! Once encased in parentheses, one may say anything at all, while enjoying perfect exemption from all standard rules…. of grammar, punctuation, syntax, logic, rationality, AND, common decency! Bonus!….)

This poem is one I first wrote as random piece of prose, which came to me, unbidden, one day as I sat in front of the computer, trying once again to find something in my mind with which to begin a Pearl; that’s why it doesn’t rhyme. I think, even without the rhyme, it speaks of a vision that arose out of my inner eye, directly from my spirit….

Stray Cats

The veils that billow and fold
between dreams and reality
 may sometimes part,
showing the visions of one to the other,
blending, bleeding as one,
only to bring us up short,
closely jammed against immovable fate.

Still, we keep our watch,
seeking to find the vision
that brings with it the mark of reality’s regard,
a humble mind, and a compassionate heart.

Events of broad impact draw us away again,
distracting with shiny glitter and tinny music,
leaving our feelings raw and bruised,
the victim of universal disregard.

Now, in the twilight of years, the music is fading,
and the glitter has all gone, yet,
the memory of visions remains sharp and clear,
melancholy reminders of reality’s promises,
unkept…..

Today’s old-school pearl is one of my favorite types, because Smart Bee gave me quotes suitable for expressing my own thoughts and feelings on the subject at hand. Today, it will show you the path my mind followed to arrive at the set of beliefs I hold today, regarding what I consider the oldest scam in human history, otherwise known as creationism, or, the One God Fallacy….

“A man devoid of religion, is like a horse without a bridle.” — Smart Bee

“The history of the rise of Christianity has everything to do with politics, culture, and human frailties and nothing to do with supernatural manipulation of events.  Had divine intervention been the guiding force, surely two millennia after the birth of Jesus he would not have a world where there are more Muslims than Catholics, more Hindus than Protestants, and more nontheists than Catholics and Protestants combined.” — John K. Naland, “The First Easter”, Free Inquiry magazine, Vol. 8, No. 2

“The major contribution of Protestant thought to the knowledge of mankind is its massive proof that God is a bore.” — H.L. Mencken

A religion is a cult with an adequate army” — Smart Bee

“Anybody who wants religion is welcome to it, as far as I’m concerned — I support your right to enjoy it.  However, I would appreciate it if you exhibited more respect for the rights of those people who do not wish to share your dogma, rapture, or necrodestination.” — Frank Zappa, “The Real Frank Zappa Book”

“Authority has every reason to fear the skeptic, for authority can rarely survive in the face of doubt.” — Robert Lindner

Day 3 and 4 008

Gentle Readers mine…. Should you not be able to tell before reaching the end of this section today, I am not exactly at my best,  & I wanted to give you a head’s up as to the reason why I am in this state, as well as ask you to bear with me, if I get too…. well…. too weird. You will admit, I hope, that to admit any such thing is strange enough for any one day, even for me, if only for the reason it is pretty odd to consider anything we do here as anything other than weird to begin with. For me to admit to it is akin to Barry the O admitting his lies in front of the entire nation. In short, if it gets too weird, feel free to skip down to the video to ease the shock…. You’ll need the serenity to get through today’s rant….

The reason for my possible tendency to display more than the usual degree of wobble today can be directly attributed to the past 48 hours, during which the increased level of pain, the tardive dyskinesia from lacking enough medication to deal with the pain, AND, the stress level created by fighting both of them while simultaneously trying to rationalize to myself WHY I am in this condition, all peaked at once, sending me into HELL, stranding me there for hours at a time, with only short, unpredictable breaks from it all, when I could rest a bit, breathe, and try not to let the rage filling my consciousness become so strong I give in to the urge to go down to the nearest available store that sells weapons, buy a long rifle and scope, ammunition aplenty, and head out to begin hunting appropriate targets, all of whom would be easy to find, wandering around the nearest Kaiser facility…..

This is the first point where my regular Gentle Readers may begin to suspect I am in more than the usual state of anger and frustration that is, oh, so naturally engendered, by trying to deal with the insanity of a soulless multinational billion-dollar corporation, run by bankers and lawyers, who control the medical community with the insane amount of money that comes from stealing from the public, trading on their sickness and misery, charging outrageous prices for the medical care which SHOULD be the given right of every living member of any truly human society.

The sort of interpersonal interaction that is implied by the very nature of healthcare is, in my mind, one of the very reasons, possibly one of the most important of any such reasons, we humans form societies in the first place, for the advantage to be gained by living in a way which supports and encourages the well-being of every member of that society…

When I say my readers will know I am upset, it will be for the simple clue I’ve left them in two of the above paragraphs…. Note, if you will, without even thinking about it, or trying in any way to do so, each of those paragraphs (the 2nd, and 3rd after the picture) consists of one perfectly punctuated, long winded, crazily organized, but, understandable run-on sentence, covering more than one simple thought, almost as if I were ranting out loud, with my words tumbling faster and faster as they slide off my tongue, without taking a breath, for two or three minutes…. Whew! I almost need to catch my breath, and all I’m doing now is typing while sitting uncomfortably in a chair….

This sort of angst, a not terribly frequent sort of visitor to my psyche, thank goodness, is not merely enervating, while simultaneously depressing to experience, it is almost actively painful to have to deal with, for it arises from a sense of injustice, the result of having suffered harm for no good reason, other than the whim and indifference of a soulless corporate entity, whose “personhood” in the eyes of the law allows them to routinely perform acts which flesh and blood humans are proscribed, such as denying the rights of anyone, for the sake of profit.

The sheer injustice of such laws, which allow these unnatural conglomerates of resources and power to prey upon humanity, reserving the bulk of the resources, which belong to ALL of society, for their own use, to maintain their oppressive hold over the rest of their species, all for personal gain, laws which have been enacted because these same bankers, lawyers, dogma dogs, and their mindless myrmidons, in their body armor, helmets and automatic weapons of death and destruction, have been eminently successful in corrupting the courts of this country, beginning within hours of the ink drying on the US Constitution.

That assault upon the laws of our country continued right up to the middle of the 19th century, (reinforced by today’s even more corrupt judges) when pervasive influence of corrupt bankers achieved their ultimate goal, to corrupt a Federal judge so far as to grant them the boon of legal personhood, paving the way for what we see today…. Even if I CAN write a run-on sentence like nobody’s business, I can’t quite get to a point where I can be coherent in trying to describe such immensity of evil, and the crushing weight of the sheer injustice of such perverse corruption.

Gosh, I think I’ve done it again, this time to a degree hard to reconcile with how miserably I feel; how I typed this much without having my hands go numb is a complete mystery…. One so distracting, I’ve never actually gotten around to finishing the reason for today’s extraordinary level of weird and strange.

(almost sounds like a law office, doesn’t it? “Hello, this is the law offices of Weird and Strange, LLC…..”) (You DO know, don’t you, what the “LLC” behind a law office name means, right? It means they have incorporated their law offices, into a legal corporation, thus, handily claiming the rights of “corporate personhood”, much greater than those of the average, flesh-covered variety of citizen, with the complete legal authority to financially prey on society, complete with the right to lie, steal, and otherwise do whatever is necessary to maintain their chosen profit margin, no matter the cost in human suffering to their victims, er, customers….)

Funny how I keep distracting myself, isn’t it? Any who, the other part of the reason I’m in this state has to do with the time…. I’m starting today’s Pearl at oh shit. No, that’s not right; sorry, I surprised myself. I’m not sure of the exact time I started, as I was a bit blurry at the time I gave up trying to sleep through the urge to jump out of my skin, at, I think, 12:47 AM… Yes, that’s forty-seven minutes after midnight, about four hours after I finally got a sufficient handle on the pain to get to bed. It’s now 0155, a bit over an hour later, & I’ve been typing for much of that time, when not pacing around ranting to myself to give my bones a break from the chair…

So, here I am, once again driven out of bed by the completely dispassionate machinations of a soulless corporate entity, fully deserving of the name I award them as of this moment, to wit: Ultimate Assholes, for actions of deliberate evil intent, designed to manipulate me into complying with their own insane moral code, sending me into a version of physical and mental hell, simply because they want me to shell out more than I have been, putting into THEIR pockets all the money I’ve been spending elsewhere, using both the threat, and the act, of punishment for any resistance, causing in me immediate and increased levels of pain and misery, as a direct result of their exercise of power.

Later, in a few hours, I will go to the doctor’s office, at great effort and expense on my part, to do battle with them over this issue. I’m well prepared, and, by the time I get there, will be in what I know will be a full-out, incredibly huge, long-nurtured, righteous RAGE, which I will use as fuel, for the energy I need to place said rage upon their heads, and spirits, with great vigor and velocity, hopefully causing large amounts of pain and suffering, as the just reward for their stupid underestimation of me, and their intransigent insanity to believe I would stand for it…. They will, I guarantee, rue the day they decided to fuck with me….

Think I’m grandiose? Well, just be patient, and keep your eyes on the news. If they keep it up, they, and I, will end up there, for sure and for certain. I can also guarantee that they will NOT appreciate, or enjoy, the events which will put us both in the public eye…. That much, I will personally make sure of, if it kills me in the process….

I may be grandiose, but, I’m pretty sure my rage is equal to the task; they know not what they have done…. NOBODY is granted the right, or the privilege, of stepping on my rights without suffering the just consequences, which it is my intention to make as painful, if not more so, than what has been done to me… Sorry, but, a slave’s collar just never fit me very well; it chafes, terribly. I refuse, categorically, to wear one, regardless of the consequences, for me, or for the poor fool who tries to make me wear one…

(I’ve never been entirely certain as to EXACTLY what “categorically refusing” actually means, but, it certainly SOUNDS more impressive that way, don’t you think? I do….)

Fair warning….

Shall we Pearl?

“Being good at being stupid doesn’t count.”

~~ Smart Bee, with gigoid’s complete agreement ~~

Thomas Carlyle once said, “The three great elements of modern civilization, Gunpowder, Printing, and the Protestant Religion.” Though I believe he may have had a certain mischievousness in mind when he said it, knowing it would invite comment, he hit the head of the nail more squarely than he knew. The three elements he assigns to such an exalted position are three which afford the elite ruling class all the tools they need to continue their millennia-long oppression of the world’s less fortunate.

Guns, to enforce their authority; Printing, the means to spread lies and misinformation far and wide; and, most serendipitously, the Protestant Religion, that bastion of support for those who rule… This corrupt institution, by its nature, supplies a cadre of trained manipulators, conversant with the process of brainwashing the ignorant into believing a rather improbable delusional system, designed to establish, and maintain, a form of mental control over the weak-minded and ignorant, playing perfectly on their most powerful fears. These master manipulators then proceed to extend the scope of their lies to include the fostering of respect for temporal authority equal to respect for the sanctity of religious dogma.

The most common message of every religion on Earth, insidiously hidden in pious, grand-sounding lies, effectively persuades their penitents, long since convinced of their own unworthiness, into slavish submission to worldly authority, like the good little sheep they are. In reward for wearing the slave’s collar, they receive a most solemn promise of life everlasting, AFTER they die, all for the privilege of surrendering their minds and souls now…. Kind of brings the opening quote, about stupid, into stark relief, doesn’t it?…. Remember this point, it will be important further down the page.

“It’s not what you call me — it’s what I answer to.” — African proverb

Whoa! Deep waters, here, ffolkes…. While performing some system maintenance yesterday, I had to reboot the computer. Smart Bee starts up during the boot sequence, leaving itself centered in the screen as the first program of the day I view, with its first offering laid out for my perusal. The proverb you see is what I first saw, whereupon I reacted how you see in the first word of this paragraph, with shock and awe at the depth and scope of the metaphor contained in this little gem. It is, at once, a very powerful reminder of our own center, and the power which is available there for those who can use it, a form of magic to many people, but, simply acknowledgment of one’s own correct place in the universe.

The other side of the powerful meaning, hidden by its very simplicity, is how to apply that power…. There is powerful magic in knowing the true name of a thing, whether that thing is animate, or inanimate. Knowing the true name of things imparts the wisdom of knowing, inherently, the truth of any proposition, thus, the advantage of seeing the real nature of any interaction between people; in essence, it reveals motivation.

We all know, to some degree, below the level of conscious thought, how to do this. How many times have you met someone, who tells you their name, but, you can clearly see the word “fool”, or “asshole” in the depths of their eyes…. Sometimes, the true name of a person seems stapled to their forehead, or flashing in neon letters over their head, it is so obvious… Others have learned to conceal their true name behind distracting behaviors, or false displays of virtue, for the purpose of betrayal…. People are diverse creatures, thanks to good ol’ DNA, which seems to have limitless ability to combine in unique configurations, making people as unique as the word itself.

When we meet someone, we call them by certain names; sir, mister, doctor, madam, miss, etc. When we don’t exactly know their true nature. these words give us, and them, clues as to how to determine one’s best approach to the person, to meet the motivational impetus toward the desired goal, obviously, different for each. In our minds, whatever name, or word, used is likely to be influenced by our own perceptions, below the conscious, surface thoughts we have, no matter what the person’s name or title might be in their own minds. For example, when a doctor thinks of his patient, a certain set of attitudes are generated, then used as motivation, for however the doctor treats the individual.

Most often, in my experience, the doctor makes the assumption of their own inherent superiority, in knowledge, in authority, in status, for whatever reasons they have found to be comfortable for them to use as their justification/rationalization of their attitude. The patient is thus automatically placed in the unenviable position of having to deal with a person who starts with the belief in their own rightness, who intends to take control of the interaction, determining the outcome according to THEIR position’s requirements and standards.

In consequence, the patient’s own feelings, thoughts, opinions, and, in essence, their rights, are completely disregarded, as not being equal in value or importance to those of the doctor…. In short, the typical doctor assumes a completely unjustified mantle of infallibility, always dependent on the use of manipulation and control, instituting a hidden contest of wills, as it were, before interaction has even begun…. But, knowing this ahead of time is the advantage possessed only by those who can see such interaction in the harsh light of reality, knowing the true nature and name to apply to the person who has assumed an adversarial position at the outset…. most people don’t see it, whether or not they can….

To my way of thinking, this sense of automatic entitlement, especially in a physician, is not merely wrong, it is reprehensible, as it goes against the grain of everything mankind has learned about the ethics needed for doctors to do their job without falling prey to the exact issue I have described, to wit: the danger of believing in their own inherent importance, simply for being entrusted with knowledge others don’t possess, thus giving them the power to harm by their simple indifference to the rights possessed by every man, woman, and child by virtue of life.

It’s my belief, strongly held, these rights, possessed by every person alive, includes the right to make the final decisions on any issue pertaining to their own health or well-being. No other person, at all, has the right to make that decision for them, without their full agreement, given freely, without coercion or influence, nor is there ANY justifiable reason, ever, for denying that right, particularly for people who are at a disadvantage due to age, or youth, gender, or physical or mental deficiencies, i.e, the weak and afflicted. Those who deny rights to anyone are, simply, without any ethical character, and can lay no claim to any sort of honor. Their mamas and daddies would be ashamed of them; if I acted like that, my father wouldn’t have had to say a word to me. I would have KNOWN he disapproved….

In the hands of a doctor, pride and arrogance are akin to a loaded weapon in the hands of a child; they can harm without awareness, justifying it by believing the ends justify the means, the time-worn fallacy common to all those who embrace such loss of humanity. A doctor who believes in their own  omnipotence, implying their infallibility, to me, is one of the most terrifying of examples of how evil can inhabit the most talented of people, destroying all sense of connection with their own humanity, replacing it with unbridled, unassailable pride in their own position as demi-gods, possessing the power of life and death over their subjects….

Now, I am not a fool; I have proof, somewhere…. I realize that many doctors are not complete assholes; some actually do care about other people, using that motivation to help whomever they can. But, they are few and far between in today’s medical model, which is founded upon the massive sense of entitlement enjoyed by the powerful, entrenched traditions so prevalent in the AMA, and other spokespeople for the medical community.

(Doctors, you see, believe they are of paramount importance in the scheme of things, more so even than the other people who assist them; nurses, aides, technicians, secretaries, all are less powerful, and less important, in their eyes, and regard…., and please, let’s not insult ANYONE’s intelligence by suggesting such an observation isn’t obvious to the most simple minded…. In fact, if you ever want an eye-opener, ask a hospital aide, or a janitor, in a hospital, about how doctors typically treat them, when they bother to even notice their presence…. If you can find one brave enough to risk their job to tell you, it will raise your brows all the way to the top of your hairline….).

The rare ethical souls, who still remember the symbolic, yet powerfully real function of the recitation of the Hippocratic Oath, which signifies commitment to its stated principles , are too few, without any organization to be of any permanent effectiveness in reforming the current model. Generally, they don’t even notice, anyway; expediency is now standard training for all American citizens…. as encouraged by those who now own the medical community, those corporate interests who run Big Pharm, and the huge HMO and insurance organizations, who are in complete control of the AMA, working hand in glove with the agencies the government maintains to regulate our lives for us….

The big corporations LIKE the doctors thinking they are powerful; but, notice, please, who must follow COMPANY protocols, in order protect their livelihood. The corporation isn’t worried about the doctors at all, for they wear their own version of the same collar worn by the general public; it’s just more stylish, and doesn’t chafe as much, as long as they don’t concern themselves with anything like self-respect, or honor.

Many people forget when looking at modern medicine, not even doctors have anything to say about what will be allowed, and what is appropriate medical theory to hold as truth. The actual people in charge of every HMO and insurance scam, of every Big Pharmaceuticals Corporation, (Merck, Lilly, etc.), are not even trained as medical personnel; they are trained businessmen, with degrees in Hospital Management, or MBA’s from Yale or Harvard, whose ONLY goal in life is to secure as much power and money (i.e, resources) as they can before they die.

The avowed purpose of Kaiser Permanente, that corporate giant so ubiquitous here in the US and around the world, is to see that their “members” THRIVE…. Do you believe, for a moment, that idea has anything at all to do with the actual purpose behind the company’s motivation? I would suggest, the company’s primary goal is to make money; if they happen to provide some services, well and good. But, their first loyalty is to the transaction, not the parties involved in the transaction. It would seem to me, their vision statement might be more accurately read as, “Protect the bottom line, and screw the rest; it doesn’t matter who suffers if it is profitable to the company.”

If one happens to look at the policies and rules by which their “members” must abide to receive any services at all, it becomes crystal clear that the only true goal in evidence is to squeeze every bit of money they can out of each individual who falls into their grasp, in a relationship which would be more accurately defined by the word “victim”, than it is now, i.e., “members” If one needs more than merely one piece of proof of the attitude Kaiser takes toward its “members”, consider the first and second questions asked by any Kaiser employee when speaking on the telephone to a person they suspect of being a “member”….

First, one is asked if one is a Kaiser member; second, one’s Kaiser number is demanded as proof of membership…. Without that number, one may not even speak to someone who might be able to help them, unless it happens to be a sales operator, perfectly willing to sign them up as a member. so they, too, can be awarded their own number, which they are perfectly free to staple on their forehead, to smooth the process of receiving medical care from their “providers”….. Or, you can just memorize it to speed up the phone conversations, as many of the Kaiser employees have learned to skip the first question, going straight to asking for the  number, which is all they really need to identify your status as a victim, er, member….

Doesn’t it all just give you a warm, fuzzy feeling? If so, you are a perfect candidate for their particular version of slavery; perhaps they’d feel less insulted if I merely called it “indentured servitude”, but, I’m not in the habit of mincing words, though  I admit to a tendency toward some lingering resentment showing through, on those occasions when I call a spade a spade…. Hard not to, when I’m speaking about events of which I have personal experience as evidence of their veracity…. I’ve a patient man, as well as a victim, er, patient of Kaiser’s, on two different occasions, for a total of more than ten years of my life, so I am quite familiar with their continuous attempts to destroy my soul, & turn me into an obedient little slave, who hangs on the doctor’s every word as if it were a direct message from God….

I figure, those who wish to “assume the position” are welcome to do so; any and all attempts, by anyone, or, anything, to force me to do so is destined to fail. I’m too old, too fucking smart (as in, NOT stupid, or weak-minded, or manipulable by any normal means…), and too mean to ever allow any such atrocity to take place. My soul’s health, my body’s health, and my mind’s health are not separate objects to me; they ARE me….  Any decisions about my condition is MINE to make, no matter how entitled anyone else may feel they may be; I guarantee, by making such a dangerous assumption, they will be taught, at their own expense, they are wrong in their assumption. Thus, they are NOT entitled to any consideration on my part, for their safety or well-being, at all, at all….

Anyone who believes they can, or are entitled to abrogate my rights, or my own decisions about anything to do with ME, is in for a most terrible disappointment, with the added risk of pissing me off…. The last entities to do so are now enjoying the hospitality of a different dimension, and the world is no wiser to their absence than that of any other insignificant insect that has passed on to another plane…. But, it’s not my job, or my chosen duty, to prevent anyone else from making mistakes they will regret; it’s only my duty to stop them when they try to do so to me. Rest assured, I have no problem with doing so….

So be it.

gigoid has spoken…. a lot, it seems.

It seems that being up most of the night and day stimulates my ranting glands, in such a way they produce massive quantities of freshly chewed material, a great deal of which seems to have been included in today’s Pearl. This, of course, means you’ll have to put up with my poetry again, to save the reputation of anyone else I might include… It’s just better for all concerned…. I hope you enjoy it anyway….

When life calls, ready or not….

Memories are all we have sometimes
to keep our sanity intact,
with learned phrases and subtle rhymes
lessening life’s vicious, vibrant impact.

Presently all seems composed and intent
in stark contrast to hollow day,
forlorn patchwork emotions of unheralded bent,
fill up night’s bower, leaving hell to pay.

Such vigorous and elevated temper
brings us rare moments to ponder,
filled with lessons all need to remember
lest base perception lose valued wonder.

Laugh loud when entropy sticks fast
leaving shameless anger in its wake.
Let bygones pass quietly into the past
reaping only what is left to take.

Final words of wise imagination
tell us living well’s the best revenge, it appears
ever eluding choirs and congregations
finally finding home, never buried in tears.

The pearl you see below is an interesting collection. When I started the process, my only intent was to find a subject by letting my subconscious mind let out a yell at the first one it liked…. My version of ghost-writing, so to speak….

Letting my mind coast through the quotes, the following pearls, along with a few others trimmed out for another rant on government malfeasance, seemed to go together, though the reason wasn’t readily apparent to my pain-distracted conscious mind. Later, I figured it out, but, would rather let it stand without any explanation, to see what happens…. Some of the included ideas come from sources I usually don’t find much use for, but, they fit in with this…. My version of a lab experiment, again, so to speak….

Whether or not any of this makes any sense to you, each pearl, taken individually, should, at the very least, stimulate the random thought or three (there appear to be a lot of them….), making it a worthwhile occupation for a couple of minutes of your valuable time….

So to speak…

“There is no ancient gentlemen but gardeners.” — William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Hamlet — Act v, Sc. 1

“Advice is probably the only free thing which people won’t take.” — Lothar Kaul

“Never ascribe to an opponent motives meaner than your own.” — John M. Barrie

“I came not to send peace, but a sword.” — Matthew 10:34

“The measure of a man’s real character is what he would do if he knew he never would be found out.” — Thomas Babington Macaulay

“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do so.” — Proverbs 3:27

“Ubi solitudinem faciunt, pacem appellant.” [They make a desert, and call it peace.] — Tacitus (54-119 AD), Agricola, 30

“If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave…” — Ernest Hemingway, “A Farewell to Arms”

“Courage is the greatest of all the virtues. You cannot consistently practice any other virtues without being courageous.” — Maya Angelou

“Bow to no patron’s insolence. Rely on no frail hopes; in freedom live and die.” — Seneca

“They say you can’t do it, but sometimes that isn’t always true.” — Casey Stengel

What a perfect pearl for the closing line! I’ll bet they said I couldn’t do it today, but, that has been shown, patently, not to be the case. Having thus defied the odds once again, in spite of the handicaps encountered by being up in the middle of what should have been my night of restful sleep, I shall take my leave, with more dignity than I imagined would be possible. Some quiet relief in there, too, ffolkes, you betcha…. Well deserved, too, after an outburst of more than 5000 words! See y’all tomorrow, if I’m not in jail for blowing up a Kaiser facility…. I guess I’ll stick to metaphorically blowing up some Kaiser employees, strictly for medicinal purposes, I assure you…. Ta, then….

Y’all take care out there,
and May the Metaphorse be with you;
Blessed Be, dearest Carole, Mark,Theresa, & Richy
and everyone else, too…

When I works, I works hard.
When I sits, I sits loose.
When I thinks, I falls asleep.

Which is Why….

Sometimes I sits and thinks,
   and sometimes,
I just sits.
