Hajime…. Fortunately for me, the process I’ve developed over the years continues to stand in good stead for my muse, who is, apparently, on sabbatical. Until she/he/it has returned, I’m on my own, a sure recipe for disaster, let me assure you. To avoid any such less than optimal outcome, I’ve put together a relatively heavy (don’t worry, heavy in weight, not intensity) Pearl, which, though it may take some time to wade through, will nonetheless provide ample food for thought, and some damn find music, if naught else. Where else could you get all that for this price, eh?

I think, before anyone actually comes up with an answer to that query, I’ll use my recently discovered brevity bone to take us out of the intro in a hurry. I’ve found that doing so will, at the very least, put a damper in any pending lawsuits; something out the air at the oyster beds keeps the process servers away…. Of course, the air there HAS been rated by government agencies as “miasma”, so, perhaps they have something about which to complain…. not that we care at all, but, it gives them something to do besides pick at each other.

Now, where was I, before I so rudely interrupted myself? Oh, right. We’re outta here…. See ya down the page ffolkes, and, I’d suggest you use the conveniently located handholds on the wall…. It’s gonna get bumpy…..

Shall we Pearl?

Sandclock .jpg

I’m still working on a new rant, so, bear with me, as we go with one from about two years ago, which, as with all of my rants, seems to be still valid, in all it says…. Enjoy!….

From 3/16/2014:

“…when all government… in little as in great things, shall be drawn to Washington as the centre of all power, it will render powerless the checks provided of one government on another and will become as venal and oppressive as the government from which we separated.” — Thomas Jefferson, 1821

Before we begin, please read the article attached to the link below; it contains information that will be necessary to a full appreciation/understanding of the discussion to follow…..

After reading this article all the way through, I came perilously close to puking, only resisting the urge, strong as it was, because I wasn’t in a place where it would have been convenient….. However, I WAS able to determine, immediately upon completion of the article, that I would definitely be ranting on this one, for sure and for certain…. This CRIES out to discussed, and, who am I to destroy the wishes of such a plaintive, compelling cry for social justice?

Did you catch the key points in the report on these asshole bankers and their naked avarice? To me, one of the key points in the article, which shows just how ridiculous the whole thing becomes when examined in ANY light, is the sentence imposed on the banks for admitting their guilt…. Essentially, the decision says this: a) the banks were guilty of defrauding their customers (again)…. they admitted it without a qualm; b) they only have to pay back PART of what they stole by doing so, and c) they don’t have to go to jail, they get to stay in business, and keep ALL of the profits they made by this theft.

You know, it makes me wonder…. I’d wager serious money (if I could cover the bet…. I’m not a bank, and I bet with honor….)….. very serious money, that the banks, when they planned out their campaign of theft in this instance, included in their plans a certain amount of money to set aside to pay the legal fees involved in defending themselves once they got found out and sued for the fraud…. I BET they knew before they started that, eventually, the SEC and their counterparts (ie, government thieves….) in the BRC would catch them in their thievery, and take them to court, so they set aside a percentage of the profits to be made to cover that, and proceeded with the plan to steal from their customers, (i.e. US, you and me, and all the other little investors whose money they steal on a regular basis….), knowing ahead of time that they’d never do any time in jail, and could count on a certain amount of profit on the deal…

I don’t think anyone would take that bet, unless they’re stupider than they look….. Ffolkes, how much more proof is necessary? How many times do we have to let these assholes fuck everyone else in the world, and let them get away with it, before we do something about stopping it? Personally, I’ve about had it up to here (makes motion at neck…) with their sheer gall, to carry out a scheme like this, in full view of the public, knowing they’ll be able to not only get away with it without ever spending any time in jail for their crimes, but will make a decent profit by doing so…. a profit they, of course, feel is their RIGHT to make, just because they want it…..

It’s not the money…. though, of course, it would help a lot of people if it wasn’t stolen…. No, it’s the sheer effrontery, the gall, the entitlement that gives these assholes the idea they can do this with impunity that bothers me the most…. It’s the kind of thing calculated to piss me off enough to take some action, even if that action isn’t necessarily the one that will help the most…. No, I’m tempted, almost beyond control, to go buy a gun, and a LOT of bullets that go with the gun, so I could start picking off bankers, and politicians, and judges, and police officers, and all the other assholes who dump their loads of BS all over everyone else in the pursuit of their own agendas, never caring at all how many others they harm in the process…

Yep, ffolkes, the time is drawing nigh when my patience will be at an end, and I’ll actually DO something that will, if nothing else, make me feel as if I’d helped in a small way to put a stop to the bullshit going on all around us…. It may not change society, but I’ll damn sure feel a lot better, you betcha….

Bah, humbug! Writing about this has gotten me as worked up as reading the article did originally; I’m sitting here vibrating with anger at the corporate assholes who are constantly degrading life for the rest of us, and wishing there were some way to speed up the time until I can afford to buy a decent weapon (by “decent” I mean, of course, that it will do all I want it to do….)…. I have a feeling it won’t be terribly long now until that day actually arrives…. and I can’t wait, to tell the truth….

I’m too worked up to rant further about this, though I can feel a lot more inside me that needs to be released…. So, I’ll finish off with a little five-star pearl, using as a parameter the same subject upon which we’ve been gnawing…. Hey, it’s a quick, legitimate way to bring this to a dignified, if choppy, ending….. Enjoy….

Penance, Made Simple

After all the dross is sent away
a celebration can begin,
time will face up to space, to stay
willing, to shine from within.

Anger and confusion come in to share
brushing reason aside,
eager to welcome all that is fair,
alert to danger, eyes wide.

Re-gift the wicked with their own pain
stand with the just;
fail to partake of the ill-gotten gain,
living in honor, the only must.

Standing fast in the face of wrong
is its own prize and reward.
Holding on to truth makes us strong,
well worth working toward.

Little is left to chance by fate
our lessons are never free of cost.
Seldom does reality make us wait
only when alone, are we lost.

Since the beginning, I’ve known some pearls are more, well, coherent than others. This one is, in the final analysis, pretty transparent, while simultaneously exhibiting a certain dignified sobriety, which, to me, enhances the message it carries, as a whole. But, then, I created it, so, who’s to say if any of that will be so? I suppose, as always, that may be taken as part of the point of this exercise…. A clue: this is all stuff seldom considered, but, all fairly significant, in its way…. Don’t worry, you’ll see….

“And sometimes the bear eats you.” — Realist Bee

“Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know them you must find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and
hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That’s the fun part.” — Drew Marold

“No matter where you go, there you are.” — Buckaroo Banzai, Buckaroo Banzai – Across the 8th Dimension

“I’m the one who’s got to die when its time for me to die, so let me live  my life the way I want to.” — Jimi Hendrix

“The only people for me are the mad ones.” — Jack Kerouac

“All that we see or seem, is but a dream within a dream.” — Edgar Allen Poe, from the poem “A Dream Within a Dream”

“You have taken yourself too seriously. Knock it off.” — Cheeky Bee

I’m a bit surprised to have finished this with as much aplomb as has been the case. Rather than make the seriously bad mistake of trying to explain that comment, I’ll leave you in suspense, thus obeying the old adage about leaving ’em with something to think about. I will, in spite of all attempts to stop me, or dissuade me, be back tomorrow, to do this again…. I can’t seem to stop myself….

Simple Beauty

Hajime…. The day ahead of me gives the appearance of being stuffed full already, and I have yet to complete this Pearl…. I also need to apologize to some of the blogs I follow, for not getting there often enough to keep up. As my body continues its journey back to good health, I find myself getting weary earlier. This has sent me to bed by 8 PM now for a few weeks, and it’s eating into my reading time. I’m sure I’ll eventually be back to a higher energy level, but, for now, mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa, and, now we can go on….

Since we are again somewhat late getting started, with little properly done, I’ll make this short. How short? Well, this short…..

Shall we Pearl?….

We the People...

Freedom = Responsibility

I find it a noisome fact to realize, if one asked any modern American to explain the meaning of the above equation, they would be relatively unclear, both in their own mind, and in their explanation, as to how to do so. They may have some idea of what freedom means, but, cannot easily come up with the very simple answer to what the responsibility entailed may be. I say simple because we were actually all given ample warnings about how certain elements of humanity would try to abrogate our freedoms for their own benefit, in plain language, such as this:

“If a Nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be … If we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it is the responsibility of every American to be informed.” — Thomas Jefferson

Those Gentle Readers who have been here often know this is a subject upon which I tend to harp, as it is, in my opinion, the major failure of the American public, now, and for the past 200 years. However, rather than rant today, I’m going to send you to read two posts online, one at, and one here on WP. The first is an article exploring the exact issue outlined in Jefferson’s statement of responsibility. The second shows quite clearly the result of this failure of responsibility, and how the American public has failed to earn the liberties they have lost….. The article on Salon I found here:

This is the article for you to read:

The second article is from Dean Baker, whose work you first saw here yesterday, with a very fine poem. Today you’ll get his take on the Trump phenomenon, with erudition, accuracy, and humor….

You can find more of Dean’s work, and buy his books, at, here:

Adjectives of Quality ~~ Bloody Friday

A baleful lump of ironic introspection
 sits upon my shoulder today
leaving traces of fey reflection
with a smattering of true dismay.

Resistance may be futile, many have said,
belief didn’t necessarily follow.
Abnegation of fear marks all bills paid,
leaving such empty threats hollow.

Symbolic courage never sleeps so deeply
as when delusion holds sway.
Bartered virtue, sold far too cheaply,
stands in shame, until honor fades away.

Too many culprits exist to count just one;
all of us bear obvious blame.
Evil is as evil does, only, when it’s done,
it begins again, all same-same.

Nobody seems to care enough to deny the lies.
Ignorant fear rules humanity’s masses.
When evil passes unremarked, innocence dies;
silence equals guilt, leaving only hope’s ashes.

Reality screams; tales of terror unfold,
flames fanned with purposeful malice,
insidious dangers hide beneath atrocity untold
as Gaia weeps into an empty chalice.

Our final old-school pearl is a rather elegant nine-star necklace, with some observations on what it takes to be a complete human…. Well, in my book, anyway…. Enjoy!…

The Warrior at Rest

Bon soir, monsieurs. et madames…. Today I celebrate (if that is the correct word…. perhaps ‘acknowledge’ comes closer to the truth…) my 65th birthday. And, that, you may be sure, is the last you’ll hear of it from me. I’ve got too much on my plate, and mind, to spend much time considering, or spending time on, an event which happens every damn year, and no longer warrants much enthusiasm as a new experience…. It’s like Ronald Raygun said, back in the 60’s (if I remember it right…. tough call for some of the memories from that time….), “if you’ve seen one tree, you’ve seen ’em all.” Familiarity, in many cases, CAN breed contempt….

End of story…. Of course, now I’m tasked with finding and employing some other snappy trick with which to open up today’s mess. Over the past four years, I’ve tried a number of methods: nonsense, fiction, ranting, even subletting to a robot. None of it seems to last long, however, so, the daily battle to make this introduction interesting, or, at least enough so to get y’all down the page far enough it’s too late to turn back…. well, it continues to rage unabated, with no logical end in sight. Damn! It’s a good thing we don’t depend on logic, isn’t it?

That’s probably enough fun for one section, even if it only approximates actual fun. We’ve got bigger fish to fry today, even if half the post is from archived material. I figured out it makes little sense to spend too much time on this one, with only a couple days left until I won’t have to jump through so many hoops to get it posted, a five or six step operation that is much less conveniently performed away from home, without even factoring the travel involved, or the added stress on my budget. I’ll be glad when I don’t have to do that any longer, for damn sure… For now,

Shall we Pearl?….

HL Mencken

gigoid’s rule of law

Back in early 2013, I received a blogging award from a fellow blogger (if you visit the archives on the date below, you’ll find a link to elliebloo’s site, one of my earliest follows, and followers….) The information I included on moi, if not particularly intimately informative, or complete enough to give up a lot of private stuff, turned out, altogether, quite amusingly accurate. So, to pat my own back for once, here’s what I wrote for receiving the award, whose name I forget at the moment….

From 4/12/2013:

Seven things about gigoid you probably didn’t need, or want to know, but rules are rules…..

1) I am a true curmudgeon (I hate everybody, and everything they do…. equal opportunity cynicism, at your service….), with a large streak of closet romantic in me….. so be it….

2) If you took all of the moments in my life I’ve been truly happy, it would make quite a good 10 minute video…. Just kidding…. Actually, it would have to be considered an epic film, because I’ve been happy, mostly, for much of my life…. I discovered, a long time ago, if we are just happy with the way things are now, then things will work out for the best,  most of the time…. In other words, a man who knows he has enough, is rich beyond measure….

3) Apparently, I don’t like to talk about myself, at least not intimately, because I’m stuck here on #3, with no idea of what to say….. Hmm, how’s this?…. I’m giving up Boston Baked Beans for good…. what they do to my guts shouldn’t be allowed in polite society, so we’re parting ways, with no hard feelings, only odoriferous remnants of past repasts…..

4) I am not a Vegan…. in fact, I’d rather eat a Vegan than talk to one…. No, really, just kidding, but, I’ve never understood the impulse toward such ideas…. First, why fight several hundred thousand years of evolution? My body LIKES meat, and processes it as well, or better, than many other foods in that category I like to call rabbit food…..

Sure, I believe in the connection between all life forms, but, given the chance, there are many members of the animal kingdom who would have no objection, philosophical, or otherwise, to eating me, should the opportunity arise…. Sharks, any big cat, wolves, bears, komodo dragons, monitor lizards, any of them would be happy to consume my carcass, cooked or not….. I feel no need to avoid eating them, as long as I appreciate the sacrifice, and grok their spirit….

5) As I grow older, I am finding myself appreciating my years of experience more each day. Tasks I found onerous throughout my life become simpler with the inside knowledge of how things work in the real world, and though I cannot lift as much as I used to, and I walk pretty slowly now,  I THINK a lot faster, and there isn’t much I can’t do now than I could as much as twenty years ago…. If I do have to move quickly, or apply some strength to accomplish something, I may pay a higher price, in pain, for doing so, but, in general, I find most stuff easier, because it is familiar, and thereby made simple….

6) What is the mind? This question has fascinated me all of my life, and has provided me, because of the breadth and width and depth of the query, and the implications of whatever speculative answers one may find. It makes the study of people, myself included, a topic of endless fertility, as I try to understand my own mind, and how it works, and how it perceives the universe, as well as watching other people to try to ascertain the answers to the same questions that I see in their behavior, or in their words.

This question has been the central driving force behind all of my curiosity, and hopefully, will continue to stimulate my interest in Life right up to the day the Grim Reaper comes for me….. whereupon he will need to use all his skills and tricks, for I will not go quietly from this plane of existence, even though I do not fear what is next…. I’m just having too good of a time to go when HE wants me to go…. If I’m  not done, I’ll be kicking and fighting every step of the way to Hell, or wherever my next stop might be…..

7) Damn! Isn’t that enough?…. Okay, okay, here….. I’m a sucker for a good hat. When I received the money from SS for all the months they had delayed in awarding the benefits, my second purchase was a new hat, followed by the third, a beautiful black homburg with grey trim around the brim…. very classy and dignified…. Hell, it might even get me in to see the Queen when I’m in London, you think?…..

Alright, that’s seven…. Whew!  I thought that would NEVER end….

Okay, now I  have to notify all the folks in my list of blogs, above, so I’ll be off to do that…. Thanks again to elliebloo for nominating me for this award, which I don’t deserve, but appreciate a lot….

Writing haiku has always come naturally to me; the numerical requirements seem to fit right in with the way my mind works. I’ve been a bit slack about writing a poem each day for this month’s challenge, choosing instead to pick from my archive. Today, I will force whatever is in there to come out, even if only as haiku…. Let’s hope it’s more than just one of those….. As every day this month, this is for the April National Poetry Writing Month Challenge, with the updates to be found here: (I still don’t know if I’m doing this right, but, oh well….)

Haiku II

An inner light glows
shining out of open eyes;
madness or wisdom?

Early Observations

Until I knew there was more,
I wanted to know God.
They said he was a nice guy,
and would let me live forever.

All I had to do, they said,
was live my life for Him,
always living by scripture
cleaving only to his Way.

But, everyone I saw in church,
acted different at home.
Living wild, cussin’ and fussin’,
nobody lived like they said.

Still, I tried to be like Jesus,
he was sort of cool.
He never hurt nobody
and walked on the right path.

‘Course they killed him for that,
they couldn’t stand his example.
Turned him into a martyr,
hid his real words among their own.

Then I found the Buddha,
and met Lao Tzu at the gate.
They saw things real different,
showed me how to see straight.

Right thought, and right action
replace blind obedience and faith.
Reality becomes manageable,
fear retreats, the universe expands.

Brother John said it pretty well,
“Imagine there’s no heaven,
it’s easy if you try.”
Sounds like he knew why.

Day to day, life is grand,
we walk in eternal beauty.
Open your eyes and hearts,
find yourself already immortal.

~~ gigoid ~~

Well….. that just popped out, in near-record time…. It doesn’t rhyme, except at a couple points, but, I like it, so, here it is, for better or worse….

So be it.

gigoid has spoken…

À bientôt, mon cherí….

Fatuous noises about the size of their noses….

Purple dots keep dancing in front of my eyes, but they are no doubt due to the vigorous rubbing I’ve been engaged in since getting up…. can’t seem to shake the fatigue that hit me when I got home last night…. Oh well, rather than whine about it, we’ll just get going on today’s Pearl, sans any real idea of what reality is looking like right now…. I don’t suppose we can consider that a handicap, given the expressed purpose of this blog, and it’s very title, to wit: Exploring Consensual Reality…. I guess this morning you’ll just have to settle for MY Reality, or at least my take on what we all agree as that slippery slope’s approximate shape and properties….. So be it….

Travel is harder than I remember, and the TSA thing is just absurd….. I haven’t flown much since 9/11; it was way back in 2004, on the way to and from Beijing, when I was last exposed to their tender mercies….. The weird part is, after all this time, they are even worse at the whole security thing than they were back then; there seems to have been no attempt to improve the system, other than some improved technology (the full body scanner was pretty cool….). But, I noted at least five ways it had gotten worse, and could have carried enough stuff on the plane with me to cause a lot of problems, had I so desired. Being a bit of a coward about doing things that endanger ME, or anyone else, while flying at 35,000 feet, I have no such desires…. But, I also don’t want anyone else doing it, and it sure would be simple to do so, by my calculations….

I’m not going to enumerate my noted observations, though for those who know how to contact me, I will discuss it privately, for the simple reason that I don’t want to put in print any ideas the assholes who think about that sort of thing haven’t thought of yet, and give them any ideas. I may not be the smartest bozo on the bus, but I know better than to tempt the animals among us who have no restraint or compassion. I’ll say this, though…. Air flight in general is pretty safe, but I feel LESS safe thinking that the security that is supposed to keep the passengers and crew safe is being carried out by what appears to be the low bidder for the contract… and that’s the name of that tune….

Whoa, look here! We have an intro, complete with a mini-politirant, fresh out of my head, under the most excruciating of circumstances, while I was still half asleep….. Though I know better than to start a rant before I’m fully engaged, it didn’t come out too badly, so we’ll leave it alone, and get on with today’s dive…. I even found a poem lurking around in my head, to fulfill today’s poetry challenge for April, which, I will remind you is National Poetry Writing Month (I think… if not, it should be…). With no further claptrap (great word!), we’ll go on….. Shall we Pearl?…..

I’m feeling a bit old school today, so here is a harlequin pearl, randomly chosen, at the whim of Smart Bee, and my own unconscious, somewhat somnolent direction, as far as I am able to do so on a day like today, when my mind is a bit fractious, and difficult keep reined in…. But, my problems are not your problems, are they?….  😆      Any who, here are a few good ones, with a point yet to be determined…. whatever suits SB’s rather silly sense of appropriateness…. Enjoy!…. Oh, and no worries, none of this will be on the Quiz…..

“Love and magic have a great deal in common. They enrich the soul, delight the heart.  And they both take practice.” — Nora Roberts

“Some people never learn anything because they understand everything too soon.” — Alexander Pope (1688-1744

“Somebody once said we never know what is enough until we know what’s more than enough.” — Billie Holiday

“The church is near but the road is icy; the bar is far away but I will walk carefully.” — Russian Proverb

“Basing our happiness on our ability to control everything is futile.” — Stephen R. Covey

“The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think–rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men.” — Bill Beattie

Eas’d the putting off
These troublesome disguises which we wear.

— John Milton (1608-1674) — Paradise Lost, Book iv, Line 739

Well, it works for me…..

I found this lying around in my head, so here it is….. The link to where you can see all the challengers is here:

Ah Ain’t Sho, but Mebbe So….

Fried eggs got nuthin’ on me
Ah’m not even sure of mah name,
or how Ah come to be;
no idea from where Ah came.

Ah does like a mystery tho’,
puzzlin’ things out so’s Ah knows,
good from bad fo sho,
Ah sho don’t want no rock pillows.

If’n Ah cain’t figure what’s best,
Ah just falls back on mah Daddy’s words,
seems he knowed just whut’d stand the test,
‘n how to gentle the scaredest birds.

,Course, he’d lived a good long time,
‘n had lots of stuff go on by,
went to a war, n’ lost a piece or two,
never once used it fer an alibi.

He tol’ me once Ah’d best learn to learn,
school’s only cool if ya ain’t already a fool.
Yer own good measure you can earn,
by startin’ yer learnin’ with the Golden Rule.

Always seemed to me as Ah growed up,
he mostly only spoke if it wuz true,
‘n by doin’ that clued me to what’s up,
kept me from stuff that’d a made me blue.

Without ever sayin’ the word itself,
Ah learned ’bout honor, ‘n helpin’ others
not some fake stuff from some shelf,
knowing whut’s right, ‘n  that we’re all brothers.

Ah’ve been around long enough now, Ah think
to get around the block at least two times
Ah s’pose long as my head don’t shrink
Ah’ll keep on making these rhymes…..

I forgot I had to get something done today, and I need to go do it, so here is one more piece from the archives, from the days before I became so damn wordy and long-winded…. just a little blast from the past, around 2007….

Cat’s feet…

Foggy mornings such as this always bring Carl Sandberg to mind….am I dating myself? Ah well, so be it…Perhaps it is the drowsiness, but I’m feeling philosophical this morning (uh oh, better take cover). I’ll try not to leave any bruises….

In Ancient times, the great Taoist sages looked,
Alert, as if surrounded by danger.
Yielding, like ice that is on the verge of melting.
Polite, as if they were always a guest.

A sage is skilled at helping people without excluding anyone.

A sage lets go of extremism,
lets go of luxury,
lets go of apathy.

Like ice on the verge of melting…what a powerful image! I can’t compete with that, so….y’all take care out there.

Not too shabby for an old travelin’ fool…. it’s done, anyway, and that is all that matters at this point…. As I said, I gotta go TCB, so…..  Y’all take care out there, and May the Metaphorse be with you…..

Sometimes I sits and thinks,
and sometimes
I just sits.

Three Blind Mice, er, Mighty Nice Awards

Fate…. one never knows when it will rear its head and make itself known… In the past few weeks, my blog has grown dramatically in followers, and as a result, my email exploded. It has taken me until today, the 8th, to get to the point where I could get to this post, one I wanted to do right, to pay honor for the honors for which I’ve been nominated.

In short, three very lovely poetesses all nominated me for a different award. I’ll take them in order, and try to get the rules right….. but first, the fate… though none of the three women are Celtic, the trio consists of a group that mirrors the most powerful symbol of womanhood, the triple spiral representing maid, mother, and crone, the wise women of legend in the ancient culture of Eire and Britain.

I am by ancestry a large percentage of Celt, and feel very humbled that these three women, one not yet twenty, whose mind is a pleasure to watch bloom, one poetess of great power and passion, in the prime of her years, raising two children, and a grandmother, with a heart full of life and romance, have all seen fit to include me in their list of nominees for these awards. In the order I received notice, they are…..

First, at, our very beautiful crone writes of love, and family, and a life well-lived in very skilled verse, with always gorgeous pictures to enhance the feel of her writing. She received, and deservedly, the Versatile Blogger Award, and I thank her very much for passing the nomination to me among the others in her list….. the link to her home page is….

Here are 7 things about me you didn’t know….

1) I’m afraid of heights…. I can almost swoon if a picture hits my eye wrong…. and driving in SF? Not any more…

2) I have a son, a daughter, and a grandson, all of whom are the source of my greatest pride and love in this world….

3) I am a certified chef d’cuisine, with a degree in culinary arts, a gourmand and oenophile, and my favorite meal is a really good chili dog smothered in onions and cheese, with a crisp, cold beer and some beauxdacious soft, fresh, french bread to sop up the chili…

4) I consider dogs, cats, horses, cows, deer, tigers, and just about any other animal on earth to be a) morally superior to all but 0.0000000001% of humanity (if you do the math, that works out to about 10 people), and b) much better company than the same group…..

5) I am a closet Nora Roberts junkie…. I’ve read about 85% of her books…

6) I was crushed when I realized I would never be an astronaut…. but I haven’t given up on going into space at least once before I die….

7) I consider myself to be the luckiest man alive for having been raised by my father, Robert H. Moore… he was the most honest, faithful, loving man I have ever known, and remains my inspiration to emulate the same honesty, and to be the most steadfast father and man I can be, to honor his memory…..

Here are 15 nominees I think deserve this Versatile Blogger Award….

The second award nomination I received was from Saffa Tasneem, who goes by The Dainty Damsel. She is a recent high school graduate from East India, who very deservedly received a Sunshine Award. She too is a lovely young woman, rapidly becoming adept at poetry and prose alike, as well as a burgeoning photographer with a good eye for composition. Her blog is at…

Here are the 10 questions Safaa asked me to answer…

What is your Favorite color? Mother of Pearl, of course….

What is your favorite animal? Tigers….

What is your favorite non-alcoholic drink? Strong coffee…

Do you prefer Facebook or Twitter? I am reluctant to use either, but FB seems more personal….

What’s your passion? Since I consider myself a polymath, EVERYTHING…..

What’s your Favorite pattern? Celtic knots and plaids…

Do you prefer giving or getting presents? Giving…

What’s your favorite number? 42

Favorite day of the week? I’m retired, and only keep track for other folk’s convenience; all the same to me….

Favorite flower? Either one you wear on the shirt that squirts water, or a rose….

The following are my 10 nominees for the Sunshine Award….

The last nomination I received was from Mari Sanchez Cayuso, who received and passed on to me the 7 X 7 Link Award. She is the perfect representation in my trio of goddesses, of a woman at the peak of her beauty and talent. A mother, an artist, a poetess, a woman who lives more passionately than almost anyone I’ve ever seen, drawing the maximum she can from every waking moment, and turning her perceptions into amazing works of art. Her artistic power leaves me breathless at times, and I am honored she felt I deserved mention…. her home page is at…

I am to share 7 more unknown things about me… SIGH… I hate talking about me, at least in this respect, as if I’m special or something…. but, rules is rules, so here goes again….

1) For an old, fat fart with flat feet and frequent flatulence, I still get around pretty good on my raggedy old pins….no more jump kicks or basketball, but I can walk downtown with the best of them…. 🙂

2) I’m a sucker for puppies and kittens…. but, who isn’t?

3) I dislike having to deal with snow at all. Pictures of snow, fine. Fake snow at Christmas time, fine. An occasional dusting on Mount Tamalpais every 10 or so years, fine. But, walk in it, drive in it, ski on it, no thank you…. had my fill when we got stuck for 13 hours in a blizzard, thank you very much….

4) I don’t do horror flicks, not even chainsaw stuff, or psychological thrillers… too close to my reality at one time…

5) The most evil, horrifying, dangerously damaging children’s cartoon character ever? Barney, no contest. I always hoped that Barney would have run into Oscar the Grouch just once; he would have slunk back under whatever rock he crawled out from after Oscar got done with him…..

6) Spock was the MAN! And Leonard Nimoy WAS Spock….

7) Best line from “Pretty Woman”…. Kit, “Ya gotta have a goal, do ya have a goal?” Angel, “Well, I always wanted to be in the Ice Capades…” 🙂

7 links to my favorite of my posts…..

This is tougher than it seems for my blog. In fact, it is next to impossible. I have no idea how to answer this. Each morning, I make up the title for the Daily Pearl, then I write it, email it, and post it to WordPress. But, I don’t keep any record of what material is written under any title, other than in the archives of my blog. So, I haven’t a clue, just by looking at the title, or the date, what will be in the post, or even when I might have written it. The titles never have anything to do with the material in the post; I make them up fresh each day, before I know what I’m writing about…. I just never thought I’d need to go back and point out specific posts… they’re all random to me….

So, to fulfill this rule, just go to my home page, type in any date after ,oh, say, October of 2011 and before today, then go to that post, and navigate in either direction to find a random sampling of my best Pearls. I did change the format in, I believe, January of this year to its current form, so picking after then might show the latest, and best stuff…

I put my best into every one, anyway, so I’d have a hard time picking one over another for that reason as well. Just use the Previous and/or Next buttons, and it will work out fine, since I have posted at least once every day since I started last year…..

Here are my 7 nominees to receive this award….

I think I did everything I’m supposed to do, except one last thing, and that is to say once again, thank you very much, to the three beautiful ladies who prompted this post by nominating me…. Y’all take care out there…..

Sometimes I sits and thinks,

and sometimes

I just sits.

Lions, tigers, and awards, oh my!

On my morning post today, I acknowledged and thanked three excellent bloggers for nominating me for two awards, and one Tag, You’re It…..Here they are…

Tag, I’m It…. Linda Vernon, whose blog is located at is a warm, funny, and very versatile blogger from England, who writes often about her husband, 37, her brain, Peanuts, and her understandably irrational fear of the Pottery Barn.

Sunshine Award

Sunshine Award

greatpoetrymhf, a very refined poet from Canada, has her primary blog at   She writes excellent poetry with a positive outlook, and reblogs a lot of good stuff from other folks.

Dolly is dentist who lives in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. She is one of the most versatile and expert bloggers and graphic artists I know of. Her posts are always a treat, and you never know what you’ll find there. She also runs a multiple player Art Game very popular with graphic artists, who create some outrageous images using photo-editing software expertly. Her blog is found at

Okay, getting tagged, and receiving nominations requires that one share things about themselves; each calls for a different number, so I’ve averaged the three (in my head, so who knows how accurately, but, also, who cares?) and here are 10 things about me….

1) I am a closet romantic…. I cry at Hallmark commercials, especially if it has puppies….

2) In my life, I have been… a chef, a dishwasher, a father, a husband, a son, a brother, a psychiatric technician, a truck driver, a garbage collector, a 4 sport athlete (basket-, base-, and football, and martial arts), a scholar (high school valedictorian, 1968), a fool (join the club, right?), a musician (guitar & voice), a hippie (not over that one yet), an urban warrior, a bad poet, and a freelance writer….I’m not done yet; I insist on learning something new every day…

3) I love to travel; my next destination goal is Ireland, hopefully later this year.

4) My favorite adult beverage: a good bourbon, straight up with a cola chaser.

5) I am a firm believer that “Politics is poopadoodle.”

6) If I were God, I’d be really pissed about how I’ve been portrayed by ignorant humans, especially conservative politicians.

7) I’m not just a chef; I’m also a gourmand, and know more about wines than is probably healthy.

8) The best job I’ve ever had: father of Cory and Kelly, my son and daughter, who are now grown and living their lives well. If there is anything in this world I’ve done to be proud of, they are the proof.

9) I still enjoy watching Sesame Street.

10) I seek Truth, in all its wondrous forms.

11) One extra: After 61 years of life, I still love every minute, even when I’m depressed. My dark moments just make the rest all the sweeter.

Well, that’s enough about me….here are 12 blogs I’m Tagging…. you are It!

1) Jerry Doby’s blog, The Urban Link; Jerry is a public relations guru specializing in rap, hip hop, and modern culture in his well written blogs at

2) Maggie Mae, in my opinion, one of the best free verse poetess’ I’ve ever encountered, bar none; she never fails to amaze me with the power of her verse, and her unique vision. Her blog is at

3) MesAyah, a young rapper and composer, who writes all his own lyrics, and composes the music as well. His site is at

4) Robotic Rhetoric is a young man with a unique sense of humor and an engaging writing style. He posts his work at

5) Carolyn Page, aka abcofspiritalk, is an inspirational writer from Australia; she also is heavily into ballroom dancing. Her page is at

6) Rohit is a fellow polymath, a seeker like myself, who lives in India, I believe. His site is at

7) Scott Mitchell is a young poet who writes some of the most evocative poems I’ve ever seen. You can find him at

8) Ajay Ohri, who works with computers and writes simple, very personal, sometimes painfully honest poems about his current life. His site is located at

9) knowthesphere is a young, very erudite truthseeker, who shows amazing understanding and depth of spirit in his blog at

10) Manipal’s blog, 7thHeaven, is a photo blog with accompanying quotes from a wide variety of sources. His blog is located at

11) ecofinanalysis is a young poet, specializing in but not limited to Haiku. Her blog can be found at

12) Lizzie, or lizziecracked as she is known, is a very funny lady who is, to say the least, extremely energetic and engaging, writes from the viewpoint of a person with bipolar characteristics, and is one of the strongest people I know, just for being able to deal with that facet of her life, and still retain her sense of perspective. Her blog  is at

So there you have it….now, the rules state that I’m supposed to also nominate a number of bloggers for the two awards. For this rule I am changing the paradigm. The twelve bloggers above have been an inspiration to me, encouraged me, and brought much sunshine into my world (much like Linda, Dolly, and greatpoetrymhf). Therefore, I am nominating each and every one of them for both the Sunshine Award, and the Inspirational Blogger Award. Congratulations all, you deserve it. Now it’s your turn…..

Once again, many thanks to the folks who prompted this posting, Linda, Dolly, and greatpoetrymhf, you make me proud, and humble….

Y’all take care out there…

Sometimes I sits and thinks,

and sometimes

I just sits.

Awesome Blog Content Award Nomination

A few days ago, I received an email that Carolyn at was nominated for an Awesome Blog Content Award. Part of receiving such an honor is to post a thank you note to the blogger who awarded it, to nominate as many bloggers as you see fit for the same award, and to write something about oneself, using the alphabet. It was to my surprise and honor, and great delight, that Carolyn had nominated my blog to receive the award. So thank you Carolyn; you have been a very encouraging friend, and I appreciate all the support.

Nominating other bloggers whom I feel deserve this award is a tough choice. Every blog I’ve signed up to follow has excellent work to display, and choosing just a few is hard. Here are some that I tend to visit a lot, whenever I am notified they have posted. You should enjoy them as well…..

adollylicious, at Dolly is a young media artist, with a heart of gold. You can find her at

jdobypr’s site is called The Urban Link. Jerry offers news and advice for burgeoning DJ’s and Hip Hop and Rap artists. He can be found at

Photobotos promises to post an Amazing Photo Every Day! They can be found at

Maggie Mae writes very powerful poetry. Her site is at

Linda Vernon Humor writes amusing anecdotes and observations on life and her husband. You can find her site at

I would like to include a bunch more, including those by Michael, Michelle, Scott, Randall, Jimmy, Bonanzaetfils, Patrick, Ajay, Rohit, Lesley, and the rest, but I’m already pushing my skill with this blog editing function to the limits. But I want to say that every blog I’ve visited so far has been outstanding in one respect or another.

I’m not shy about talking about myself, so here is my alphabet:

A) Abundantly self-confident. (Some might say Arrogant, but they’re just jealous. A little arrogance is fine, as long as you can back it up…..)

B) Bozoid, for sure..

C) Cooks really well, all things considered. (A $35K culinary arts degree has to count for something, right?)

D) Debonair (well, maybe not, but I’ve always wanted to be described that way, and this is my chance…..)

E) Eternally romantic, within reason, and budget…..

F) Fools around a lot. Well, I AM retired, and I have a lot of hours to fill up.

G) Gosh, I dunno…..maybe Grateful, for old friends and new…..

H) Habitual reader…..averaged one book/day X 50 years.

I) Don’t get me started on “I”…I just get weirder and stranger to longer I write, and I never can stop myself….see?

J) Just another bozo on the bus….

K) Kreative speller….

L) Living la vida loca….

M) Mostly not serious, except when I am…..

N) Ned, the handle I go by out in the big blue room…only my friends and family know it, so please, shhhh!

O) Oh, how did I ever get myself into this? Will it never end? See next installment, er, letter….

P) Pretty clever, eh? That is several in a row without stating anything prosecutable….

Q) Quietly encouraging revolution….

R) Resplendent in my tap shoes and sequined vest….

S) So many places to see! So many songs to be sung! So many people to meet. So much for watching a game on Sunday….

T) Thoroughly incorrigible curmudgeon….

U) Ultraviolet light makes my hair glow orange…..

V) “Ve haff our vays of making you talk!”

W) Why do you want to know? I got nothing to hide, copper!

X) Xact change only please….

Z) Ze list, she is finish…

Well, there you have it. A veritable truckload of stuff about me, all easily folded for packing away. This may help in clearing up some of the questions you may have had after a period of exposure to the Daily Pearls of Virtual Wisdom, but I doubt it did anything but raise more questions than it answered.I do have  a softer side; I just don’t let it out much. I’ve spent too long fashioning my status as a curmudgeon to tarnish that image now. In reality, I tear up at Hallmark commercials.

Thanks again to Carolyn, and to all the bloggers who are now nominated I say, good luck! Y’all take care out there…..

Sometimes I sits and thinks,

and sometimes

I just sits.

A couple of days ago, I received an email informing me that Carolyn at had received a Nomination for the ABC Award. In turn, she nominated several other bloggers, and to my surprise and delight, I was one of them.
